so the Joe Keery Steve is the public perception of Steve?? contrasted with real Steve. whose natural quirks are often interpreted as bold statements.

After watching Pavements, I found the opening scene, where Malkmus was being interviewed, to be particularly inspiring, as its relative randomness set the stage for the meta-ness of the rest of the film. While arguably a strange interpretation, the audio distortion and rapid edits in the footage reminded me of a computer error/virus. Based on technological anomalies observed in some older computer systems, the color scheme of the different windows was selected to mimic a damaged CRT monitor, such as skewing towards blue or being separated into RGB channels. The portrait portions are arranged in a non-linear order to mimic the split-screen techniques used throughout Pavements.

video description:
Pavement and Blumfeld performing Verstärker, Stephen Malkmus on vocals. He briefly roughhouses with someone else on stage, who then slings him over their shoulder and carries him off.
Stephen Malkmus [high-pitch]: No! No! No! No! [unintelligible] Don't take me away! I don't wanna go [unintelligible]. I wanna stay! Someone, anyone!

you WISH pavement was male manipulator music so you can go “teehee I’m such a male manipulator” but it’s NOT pavement is music for 20 something bisexual women and middle aged straight dads who would make an exception for stephen malkmus
