Listening to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D was found in one study to enhance cognitive abilities.
Mozart: Sonata for Two Pianos in D, KV 448 - Lucas & Arthur Jussen
youtube
The ‘Mozart effect’ Music was my profession, but it was also a special and deeply personal pursuit … Most importantly, it gave me a way to cope with life’s challenges, learning to channel my feelings and express them safely. Music taught me how to take my thoughts, both the pleasant and the painful ones, and turn them into something beautiful.
Studying and understanding all the brain mechanisms involved in listening to music, and its effects, requires more than just neuroscientists. Our diverse team includes music experts such as Dimana Kardzhieva (quoted above), who started playing the piano aged five and went on to study at the National School of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria. Now a cognitive psychologist, her combined understanding of music and cognitive processes helps us delve into the complex mechanisms through which music affects (and soothes) our minds. A neuroscientist alone might fall short in this endeavour.
The starting point of our research was the so-called “Mozart effect” – the suggestion that exposure to intricate musical compositions, especially classical pieces, stimulates brain activity and ultimately enhances cognitive abilities. While there have been subsequent mixed findings as to whether the Mozart effect is real, due to the different methods employed by researchers over the years, this work has nonetheless triggered significant advances in our understanding of music’s effect on the brain.
Did you know that this sonata brings so much happiness to the listener that it is used for depression and anxiety therapy? It is also used by researchers to study these conditions. Last but not least, some wagy cow farmers in Japan play it for their animal to make them happy and relaxed.
The Mozart Effect refers to a 1993 study in which students were tested after listening to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos. Researchers discovered that listening to Mozart temporarily improved participant’s spatial reasoning skills. This study led to a trend of parents playing Mozart for their children in the hopes of increasing their IQs. While listening to Mozart doesn’t actually boost your IQ, the composer’s music can help improve your mood and well-being in various small ways. Try playing this piece used in the original Mozart Effect study in the background while you study. Does it help you focus?

Monsieur Aznavour 2024 ‧ Musical/Drama ‧ 2h 13m
Tahar Rahim se glisse dans la peau de Charles Aznavour
youtube

Just as Marion Cotillard was to 'La Vie en Rose', Golden Globe-nominated actor Tahar Rahim is to MONSIEUR AZNAVOUR, transforming into the iconic singer-songwriter for this lavishly entertaining rise-to-stardom biography of the man who beat all odds to not only become one of France’s best-loved entertainers, but personified French culture to the English-speaking world.
youtube
Born in Paris in 1924 as the son of Armenian refugees, Aznavour’s formative years are spent in poverty, but distinguished by his parents’ passion for music and theatre. Ridiculed for his short stature and raspy tenor voice - traits he would in time fully embrace - Aznavour’s early attempts at a showbiz career during the Occupation falter. Whilst a gifted lyricist and storyteller, his material finds more success in the hands of others, including his friend Pierre (Bastien Bouillon), and later the imperious Edith Piaf (a scene-stealing Marie-Julie Baup), who becomes a highly influential mentor and supporter. But by the 1950s, Aznavour finally realises his own ambitions; his empathetic ‘chansons’ about the heartbreaks, confusions and passions of the common man (mining the dramas of his own life) catapult him to global attention. Led by its star’s astonishing performance and stunning vocal prowess, Mehdi Idir and Grand Corps Malade’s emotional and lavishly-mounted MONSIEUR AZNAVOUR is a true tour de force as intimate as it is spectacular, serving as a triumphant reminder of the power and impact of music. It’s a grand and unmissable cinema experience.

The secrets of Mozart’s “Magic Flute” - Joshua Borth
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” (“The Magic Flute”) is widely regarded as one of the most influential operas in history. And while it may seem like a childish fairytale at first glance, it’s actually full of subversive symbolism. Joshua Borths explains how many elements of "The Magic Flute" were inspired by Mozart’s somewhat controversial involvement with Freemasonry. Lesson by Joshua Borths, animation by TED-Ed.
