Changing Perspectives On Death Through Experiences And Knowledge
A Tale Of So Much Love
Tumblr media
(This is a college essay that was handwritten for a final. Our professor was nice enough to email us scans of the pages! Thank you so much if you somehow find this prof!).
In the story "A Tale Of So Much Love" by Clarice Lispector, the main character has two pet chickens. While their family intends to eat the chickens, the protagonist does not. The protagonist leaves the house for an extended period, when she comes back, one of her chickens is gone! Her aunt informs her that herself (the aunt), the protagonist&/ father, and the rest of her family besides her mother, had eaten the chicken.
The only people the protagonist liked and trusted after this was her mother and the servants as they did it eat the chicken. Later in the story, the protagonist's view of the situation shifts. She no longer finds its cruel that chickens are raised to be killed and eaten. She sees eating the chicken as an extension of her love, that the chicken will always be inside of her.
Scientifically speaking, unfortunately the protagonist is not correct as human cells are replaced every 7 years on average. Thus the chicken no longer remains within her. Symbolically though, the story still has symbolism.
Some, like myself, see nature as cruel. Why are us humans (and others species) born purely to die? Why must we eat other creatures to survive? Innocent creatures, some we even keep as pets and learn to love. Clarice Lispector brings another perspective to the table. One that says animals had a role in their life to love you and that eating the animal is honoring its sacrifice, that it is loving. This practice is similar to that of Native Americans who honor animals by using their entire body for resources.
Not only do they eat the animal with respect, but they also make clothes with their hide. They make tools with their bones and so much more. The death of the animal is not a tragedy, it is noble.
Back to Clarice Lispector, providing a more positive outlook to the quite negative. It is common in therapy to gain a new perspective on things (or at least have your therapist encourage so). We cannot change the food chain. We cannot change that our bodies need protein to survive. The only thing we can change is our perspective. Surrounding oneself in positivity breeds more positivity.
Within the same story the protagonist has a child like view of the world. She assumes the "pet" chickens are meant to be just that, pets. She does not yet understand that they are being raise purely to be eaten. Her family eats one of her chickens and this shatters the protagonist. The world feels more grey, all the carnivores around her are monsters. She has trouble trusting those around her (besides the ones who did not eat the chicken). Her mother's only reason for not eating the chicken is that she does not like the taste of the dish. Even then, the protagonist still trusts her the most. The mother tells her that eating the chicken is a loving action, that the chicken will always be with her if she eats it.
After some time, the protagonist takes this to heart. She later gets more pet chickens who she takes loving pleasure in eating. While the girl was able to adopt a healthy positive mindset over the event and fact of life with time, she also learns to accept death as a natural fact of life. Something more akin to an experienced mature adult than a mere child. Only after she had an experience and was truly able to look back and change her outlook, was she finally happy.
While it is perfectly okay to still be angry at the cruel nature of things, it is better for the mind to try and see the positive. To see some of the beauties of death. For nothing is truly bad or good. There is beauty in everything. Well, almost everything. Everything in nature at least. Certain humans, not so much.

A Reflection of Lost Childhood Innocence in Childhood, Boyhood, Youth, and The Story of My Dovecote
Tumblr media
(This is a college essay, some stuff was changed as to not dox ourselves).
Stories are a way to see the current state of society mirrored within fiction. All art is political, as all art is written by an author living within a politically charged society. Two stories: Childhood, Boyhood, Youth by Leo Tolstoy (1857) and "The Story of My Dovecote" by Isaac Babel (1925) particularly show real world mirrors of the loss of innocence in children and how it turns into a lack of empathy during violent times. The stories are fictional, but can teach readers about both the past and the present.
In the story of Childhood, Boyhood, Youth the main character, Nikolenka Petrovich Irtenev moves away from his mother to the big city of Moscow. Here he starts to grow up. He has a decently normal childhood at first, full of childhood innocence, but it starts to twist into something else. As Nikolenka gets older he starts to care about appeasing others and trying to impress them, just as an adult would. Nikolenka wants to impress a group of boys, the Ivin brothers, and in doing so bullies and tortures the poor Ilenka Grap. Nikolenka later reflects on this and feels bad for ever doing such a thing. Within the story, Nikolenka also makes fun of Karl Ivanych Mauer simply to impress a girl, something he later regrets. He is actively loosing his childhood innocence in real time.
In "The Story of My Dovecote" the loss of childhood innocence is more abstract. In the story the main character Isaac wants a dovecot. A child’s innocent dream. The story ends with a disabled man named Makarenko slapping Isaac and the birds end up crushed on Isaac’s body. His innocent childhood dream turning into a dark violent adult reality.
This is not to say that all adults lose their childhood innocence and become abusive adults. It is important to look at when these stories were written. When Childhood, Boyhood, Youth was published the Russian people were still recovering from the Crimean War. An event which weakened and traumatized the country. In "The Story of My Dovecote" Isaac is directly dealing with the discrimination of the Jewish people within Russia, something that would even lead to the author’s death later on in 1940. The traumas of events and political environments such as these lead to people not knowing how to cope. It forever changes the brain’s way of thinking. This is not just something of the past. It is starting to happen again even today. The best way to observe this phenomenon is through social media.
Many countries have been having hardships but specifically the United States of America is currently experiencing the devastating effects of late-stage capitalism and an extreme wealth gap. The richer keep getting richer, leaving the average Joe with less and less. Every time a new legislation is passed, or people share their experiences with said legislation, it is posted on social media. Recently the price of insulin has skyrocketed. One caller on The Washington Journal C-Span recounted their experience with Medicare and how their insulin used to cost six US dollars and is now eighty US dollars. For people without insurance, they are looking at having to spend hundreds of dollars on insulin, a needed medication that could save their lives. The top comments on these posts are not the uplifting encouragement one may expect. Instead there are users with little to no sympathy stating that “there are no more handouts” or “just get a job with insurance”.
Another case regarding medication is the potential upcoming ban of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), mood stabilizers, and anti-psychotics. Many mentally ill people are rightfully scared as they need these medications to function. Some even need these medicines as they could save their lives and stop them from hurting themselves. Once again there is little sympathy to be found in the comments on posts reporting this. There are comments stating unproven facts about these medications such as them being addictive. When in reality most of them are no more addicting than say, insulin. This is because both medicines keep the patient stable and breathing. A person can get addicted to anything, but that is different than an addictive substance.
There are more than problems with Healthcare in the United States. A recent change made all citizens of the United States need to have their birth sex on passports and IDs. This effectively outs many transgender people and is reminiscent on the pink triangles given to queer people in Nazi Germany. This change will lead to more cases of hate crimes, assaults and deaths. Yet again, the comments do not care. People claim that transgender people are all mentally ill groomers who deserve their deaths to come, with no scientific claims to back them up.
One last thing to be mentioned in the United States is the public’s view on immigrants. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have recently been conducting raids searching for “illegal immigrants” without checking if these people have their proper documentation or not. These raids are tearing apart families. There was even a video posted on TikTok where the poster reported there being an ice cream truck owned by ICE made to lure and kidnap kids. While this specific instance has been proven a misunderstanding and was in fact a real ice cream truck, people in the comments who believed and even supported the idea had no sympathy for these children, only focusing on the fact these children were “illegals”.
This phenomenon carries on to nonpolitical conversations as well. General things such as fandom discussion online is now met with hostility, doxxing, and even death and r*pe threats. People talking about smaller struggles in their life are met with condescending comments such as “you’re an adult”. Forgive our use of personal pronouns, but an interesting example of this is within a private post we made. Our University claims it will close the school when temperatures reach a certain degree. Early in 2025 those temperatures were reached and the university did not close its doors, instead telling students to not be outside, despite the fact they need to walk to class and in most cases are not allowed to drive there. Many people were unhappy with this but their general outlook was “that’s just how winter is”, completely ignoring the fact almost all of the schools in the surrounding area closed or switched to virtual. As a way to see people’s reactions on the situation we made a post online sharing our frustration with the school’s lack of care for students citing both the extreme cold, an instance of vandalism using slurs and the school’s lack of repercussions, and the school’s lack luster disability service. Despite the fact most of the people were students at the university being wronged by the school, we were mostly met with harsh comments telling us things we stated earlier such as “you’re an adult” and “that’s just how winter is”. People had such little empathy after being worn down from their own wrongs that they were willing to be mean to their fellow struggling students instead of directing their anger at the institution that wronged them. This is both true on this small scale example of a college campus but also on the larger scale of the United States as a whole. With citizens rushing to defend the billionaires that are hurting them.
This same idea is present within the stories of Childhood, Boyhood, Youth and "The Story of My Dovecote." When Nikolenka starts to grow up and loose his innocence he starts to bully people around him just to impress others. In "The Story of My Dovecote" a disabled person is the one who hurts Isaac and kills the doves. Someone who should also feel wronged and have empathy for the Jewish boy. Both of these stories depict fictionalized versions of the effects hard political climates can have on the masses, leading to harsher societies. A child is praised for their ideals such as wanting to cure world hunger and end homelessness, while an adult is shamed and ridiculed for even suggesting such a thing. Fiction is a mirror, and Childhood, Boyhood, Youth and "The Story of My Dovecote" is showing society it’s ugly reflection.
Tolstoy had originally started writing Childhood, Boyhood, Youth as an autobiography. He later came to abandon this idea, but the remnants remain in the story. While Tolstoy regrets his decision of basing some of the work on his own life as it takes away the seriousness (according to Tolstoy himself). One could also argue it makes the entire events of the book seem more real and thus sells it to the viewer. A writer doesn't need to convince a reader the book is real if it actually is.
Tolstoy wanted to tell a fictional story about issues that interested him such as economic and social justice in Russia. Using a mix of both fiction and reality he is able to make an easy to understand story about those exact subjects.
“In The Story Of My Dovecote” the protagonist struggles with accepting his Jewish identity. He wants acceptance from those not Jewish. This can be a dangerous way of thinking as it can lead to putting down those who already accept the person (like other Jewish people for example). Babel has another book with a Jewish protagonist titled “Red Calvary” with a similar theme.
Within “The Story of My Dovecote" the protagonist falls victim to the beliefs of some anti-Jewish propaganda. Believing himself a weakling for his Jewish heritage and thus all Jews are weak.
These similar contradictory views or fellow minorities reaches its climax when Makarenko crushes the boy's doves, brutally killing them.
Both stories feature autobiographical elements. Both times these elements lend the reader a sense of reality. That the events of the story feel real. While the events of the stories are not directly real, they are a representation of reality itself. That ugly mirror. The one society likes to ignore.
Things within the United States of America are becoming more and more drastic, with the rest of the world most likely to follow suit. Registry lists are being made for minorities such as they were right before World War II, a time much closer to these stories than now. Even, then the stories tell society what to do. To not lose themselves and to understand one another, to not fight with one another. To not fall for propaganda made to stir up infighting. To stand up as one united front. To not loose the childhood innocence that made them so good in the first place.

An Analysis of the Vampire in Film Overtime
Tumblr media
(You know what time it is, college essay time).
Vampires have always been one of the most popular monsters in horror. This all started with the release of Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula in 1897. Ever since then, Dracula and vampires in general have been a part of mainstream pop culture. While vampires have extended to other genres beyond horror, they still reign supreme within the genre. As society has gotten more and more progressive, the vampires have been able to be more explicit in their metaphors of lust and desire without giving up their core roots.
In this essay three films from the vampire horror genre will be analyzed over time. All three of these films tie back to Dracula, some more than others. These three films are Dracula (1931), Fright Night (1985), and Nosferatu (2024). All of these films share similarities in the conventions of the genre. All of these films share the plot of a vampire causing many wrongs across town, and the protagonists must stop it while being hunted by the vampire. Within all of these films vampirism is sexualized and used as a metaphor for desire. Common visual indicators of the genre include dark gothic settings, fangs, blood, crucifixes. Vampires are known to blend desire with horror, and all three of these movies show that in their own ways, getting more and more explicit with time.
Tumblr media
The 1931 Dracula movie is a condensed adaptation of the original Bram Stoker novel. Many characters were eliminated from the movie all together, such as two of Lucy Westerna’ suitors: Quincey Morris and Arthur Holmwood. Lucy herself had most of her role within the story taken away and given to Wilhelmina Harker (such as the sleep walking). The character of R.M. Renfield within the movie is a combination of the book character Renfield and Johnathan Harker. Specifically taking Johnathan’s role as the real estate agent that sells Dracula his new home. Johnothan Harker is reduced to simply, John and stays the husband of Mina (Wilhelmina).
R.M. Renfield is sent to Transylvania to sell Count Dracula real estate in London. Dracula corrupts Renfield’s mind and the two sail to London together, master and familiar. The two share many scenes with queer coding, but as it was the 1930s; all hints are quite subtle. The two were also queer coded in the original novel. They can be read as a toxic romantic relationship (something expanded upon in the 2023 movie sequel, Renfield). It is also important to note that as stated previously, Renfield plays the role Johnothan Harker originally had in Dracula as the real estate agent trapped in Dracula's castle. Within the original book, Jonathan plays the role of Dracula’s gothic bride. The gothic bride is typically a damsel in distress, being held captive and manipulated by the monster, or are their prey. Johnathan in the book and Renfield in the movie fit this role well, all except of course that they are men.
Upon arriving in London, Dracula sets his focus on Mina while Renfield is locked in a mental ward. He tries to court Mina by biting her and turning her into a vampire. The vampire slayer Abraham Van Helsing (with the help of Dr. John Seward) is able to stake Dracula through the heart before Mina is fully turned. Dracula and Mina have a lot of romantic and sexual tension. For example, Dracula’s place of interest in biting Mina is her breast and he wishes her to be his. Mina though does not seem to be very interested in Dracula all that much. She has slight hints of desire but nothing more. This is as scandalous as the 1931 movie gets.
The movie follows the conventions of the genre quite closely and doesn't differ from them as it is really the inventor of such things in cinema. Or at least, one of the more well known ones. All the typical ones are there, a gothic setting, crucifixes, the vampire's fangs, the lust of vampirism.
Tumblr media
Expanding on the genre is Fright Night. Times had drastically changed in the past 54 years between these two movies. While Fright Night is not a direct adaptation of Dracula, many of its characters and plot points come directly from the book / movie. The main character Charley Brewster is the Johnothan Harker of the movie, specifically the one who is there to protect his Mina. In this case the Mina of the story is Amy Peterson. Peter Vincent is a direct play on Van Helsing but with the twist he is really just an actor. Jerry Dandridge as the vampire is of course Dracula with his roommate, Billy Cole being a loose interpretation of Renfield, but instead of being his familiar, he is his golem.
In Fright Night Charley gets a new next door neighbor, Jerry. Many women go into Jerry’s house and are then later seen missing on the news. Charley also sees a coffin brought into Jerry’s home. This leads Charley to come to the conclusion his new neighbor is a vampire. None of his friends (Amy and Ed Thompson) believe him. He eventually gets so desperate he turns to an actor who plays a vampire hunter on TV, Peter Vincent. Peter doesn't believe him either but his friends are so desperate for help that they pay him to convince Charley he's wrong. The entire group soon find out Charley was right and must stop Jerry from killing them all. Jerry takes a particular interest in Amy.
Jerry lusts over Amy just as Dracula did with Mina. Fright Night gets more explicit though as more of Amy’s skin is seen when being bitten, there are also moans that can be read as sexual noises. Amy is also allowed to have stronger desire as she states in the movie she finds Jerry attractive. The queer coding of Jerry and Billy is also stronger than it was in the 1931 movie for Dracula and Renfield. Within the movie Jerry and Billy share a house, or as the kids say “and they were roommates”. They can be read as the weird gay couple next door. There are even scenes of them leaning on each other and wrapped around one another.
This movie breaks some conventions of the vampire genre. Yes, it has the typical vampire hunting the protagonist, crucifixes, fangs, blood, sexual desire, but it also breaks the visual settings. Most vampire stories are set in gothic settings, while Jerry’s house is gothic, the movie often leaves his house. A scene that really sticks out is Jerry hunting Charley and Amy at a nightclub. The scene is lit with neon colors and flashing lights, and yet the scene still retains its horrific elements, setting unease in the audience.
Tumblr media
The last film of this essay is the 2024 version of Nosferatu. Ironically enough Nosferatu is a more faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula than the 1931 Dracula movie. Count Orlock is quite clearly Count Dracula. Thomas Hutter is Johnothan Harker (who is both the real estate salesman's and Mina’s husband). The Mina of the movie is Ellen Hutter. Lucy gets her major role back as Anna Harding. Albin Eberhart von Franz is Van Helsing. Dr. Wilhelm Sievers is Dr. Seward. Knock is Renfield (only the part of Renfield who is a patient at a psychiatric hospital). A character eliminated from the 1931 movie, Arthur Holmwood makes his grand appearance as the character Friedrich Harding, Anna’s husband.
The film first follows Thomas as he travels far out of the country to sell Orlock real estate, this time in Germany instead of London. Thomas gets trapped in Orlock’s castle but eventually escapes. It is important to note he played the role of the gothic bride here. Once Orlock is in Germany, the focus of the movie shifts more to Ellen and her connection to Orlock.
Both the lust of the monster and desire of the human have become much more explicit since the last film. Ellen explicitly explains to both Thomas and the audience that Nosferatu is a past lover of hers, a desire she is ashamed of. They even have sex at the end of the movie. Thomas gets a scene near identical to the one Jerry and Amy got in Fright Night. Orlock drinks from Thomas’ chest while Thomas moans: Additionally, Orlock is replaced with visions of Ellen in this scene, implying this is an act one would do with their lover. Ellen even directly states this later in the film. The Renfield character in this movie is also naked as he professes love to his master. All of these things would have never happened in 1931 and would most likely have the audience praying after seeing the film. Society has greatly progressed to allow these things to happen.
The film doesn't jeopardize its main conventions to have this evolution either. The gothic setting is even more intact than it was in Fright Night. The crucifixes, fangs, blood, desire, a vampire hunting the protagonists, it's all there. The movie is without a doubt a vampire horror film.
The main conventions of the vampire horror genre have not changed much if at all over time, but the explicitness of their metaphor of desire and lust has. The straight vampire human pairings do not have to hide their metaphor at all, the coding becomes text. The queer coding of the vampire and male human is still code but is slowly becoming more and more explicit. As the genre develops even more with time it is safe to say it will only get more explicit from here. Both in general and with queer representation. Maybe one day there will finally be a movie where Johnathan takes his rightful place as Dracula's gothic bride.

Slay, Wheatley
Tumblr media
So Wheatley unfortunately got a bit broken during dorm move out. This is our attempt to cheer him up and give him a makeover!
What broke is he's supposed to have an identical rod on the bottom as he does on the top. The piece must have flown out when it broke because we can't repair it as parts are missing. Instead we are left with something that looks like pigtails, so bows it is! And a top hat since we have extra from the Bill Cipher crystal.

A Short Original Story
Tumblr media
https://archiveofourown.org/works/65182279
Funnily enough, under our altar we found an old printed out short story we wrote when we were 14. If we remember correctly the assignment criteria was to write a fictional period piece set in Victorian times. And uh, this is how we interpreted that I guess.
Like we said, a 14 year old wrote this. It isn't perfect but it is what started our love of writing (not the first thing we wrote, just a spark). Even though the pacing is fast and we had really yet to learn how to plant properly, we think it still holds up as a fun little read.
Story Desc: Young Prince Viktor falls in love with a peasant, Axel. Even worse, Axel is a boy. Viktor struggles to understand why loving another boy is such a crime. No one will give him a straight answer. Desperate, Viktor summons Satan for help.
(Please note, the characters from the story are not actually Axel from Kingdom Hearts and Viktor from League of Legends. We just had a hyperfixation on both characters at the time from our favorite games and used their names (yes this was written pre Arcane).

Sunset Boulevard Sequence Analysis
"Mr. DeMille I'm Ready For My Closeup"
Tumblr media
(So many college essays on this Tumblr).
Sunset Boulevard’s most iconic scene, without a doubt is: “Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up”. This scene uses many back and forth shots showing Max Von Mayerling and Norma Desmond’s reactions and feelings towards what is happening in the sequence. The sequence in full gives the viewer a look into the mind of Norma Desmond.
Tumblr media
In the first shot Max is concerned as he knowns Norma is about to be arrested (as she has just killed a man). He is surrounded by the reporters’ cameras, and it almost looks like he is in a movie studio. Max then takes on a more directing, serious face and starts giving Norma notes for a scene.
Tumblr media
In the second shot Norma’s eyes are wide. She looks crazy. This is important as it sells to the audience, that she is crazy enough to believe Max’s fake stage directions. Norma is surrounded by people, giving the illusion of an audience, both live and for the camera. Her movements are dramatic, as someone would be acting, but not in real life. The music becomes sinister, not letting the audience forget this is all due to the death of a real man.
Tumblr media
In shot three Max is shown again, watching the show. Norma says that “down below, they’re waiting for the princess” as the camera shows Max, nodding to the fact Max has spent the entire movie thus far trying to spark Norma’s career once again.
Shots four and five are a bit repetitive as they just show more of the same between Norma and Max respectively. The important bit is Norma understanding this interaction as a movie set with Max fueling this delusion by yelling “action!”.
During shots five and six, the deceased Joe Gillis narrates to the audience that the cameras did once again capture Norma Desmond, just as she had wanted.
Tumblr media
Finally, in shot 6 there is a new composition to be seen. In a wide shot, Norma walks down the stairs, dramatic as ever. The camera pans and follows her, just as it would in a movie. All around the stairs her audience watches her, just as they would if they were in seats at a movie theatre.
Tumblr media
Shot seven does not show Norma or Max but instead focuses on more of the so called ‘audience”. The angle is low, the viewers are looking up at them, just as Norma would be while performing.
Tumblr media
In shot eight Max is still watching the show, but he seems upset, knowing what is coming, for he is not in Norma’s delusion with her, he is only the fuel.
Tumblr media
Shot nine is a cowboy shot, a very popular shot in movies, especially westerns (hence the name). A shot so known for being in movies within a movie about being in a movie is meta, but that is exactly the point. This is Norma’s movie, and the audience is just there to watch. Norma is surrounded by even more “audience” members. There are so many in frame that she feels trapped. This aligns with how she is trapped by the idea of her past fame, that she cannot let go. Norma fully gives into the delusion, first stopping the scene to give everyone a speech about how happy she is to be making pictures again. Norma sort of breaks the fourth wall by calling out the viewers directly, “the viewers in the dark”. Along with her bulging eyes, this gives a sense of unease, that something isn’t quite right. Norma ends shot nine by saying the iconic line: “Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.”.
Tumblr media
Immediately after, shot ten shows Max once more, showing that Mr. DeMille is not here, there is only Max.
Tumblr media
The sequence ends with shot eleven. Another cowboy shot with finale music playing. It is the music you’d hear in a movie right before the credits. Norma walks closer to the camera and ends up towering above it, making the shot now at a low angle. The music fitting for the ending of a movie and Norma standing over the camera, finally lets the viewers into her world of delusion. This is in fact a movie, and its star, Norma Desmond.
