Assistive Tools:Technology to Engage Children with Disabilities - Dr C P Ravikumar
When it comes to their education and overall personal growth, children with mental and physical disabilities frequently face challenges. Technology has been used in a variety of ways to give these children a voice in their education, make it more engaging, and tailor it to their specific requirements in an effort to make learning and social interactions easier for them. Children with learning disabilities and their caregivers both benefit greatly from the assistive technologies that aid in their education. Text-to-Discourse Help Devices: Text-to-speech software can be used by children with any condition that makes it hard for them to read properly, such as dyslexia, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or intellectual disabilities. Audiobooks: Because they present a visual picture, audiobooks, available on popular platforms like Audible, have made reading for dyslexic children more enjoyable and engaging. Engaging tools based on games: The development of motion-sensing gaming consoles provided gaming companies with new opportunities to engage children with physical and developmental disabilities. Digital Worksheets: Because they include audio and video questions in addition to multiple-choice questions, these are excellent options for testing and evaluating children with special needs. Speech Delays in Children: When Is It Time to Be Concerned?
Your child has just turned two and is still not speaking as many words as you'd expect. Or perhaps your toddler just turned three and you're still hearing "coo" and "goo" more often than actual words. As a parent, it can be difficult to know if this is something you should be concerned about or not. If your child is younger than three years old, you’re probably wondering when it’s time to worry about speech delays. There are many milestones that children should hit by certain ages, but there’s also a wide range of normal for kids when it comes to language skills. And that’s what this article will explore — the various stages of speech development in kids. We’ll explain what they mean (and don't mean) and provide some helpful tips on how you can support your child's communication skills at home.
What to Look For When Assessing Speech Delays in Children
First and foremost, it’s important to remember that all children develop at their own pace. What’s appropriate at one age may not be acceptable at another. So when assessing whether or not your child has a speech delay, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, how old is your child? The average age a child begins saying their first word is around 12 months, so if your little one isn’t speaking by 15 months, it might be cause for concern. That said, it’s important not to put too much stock in one single milestone. It’s worth keeping tabs on your child’s development, but don’t freak out if she doesn’t hit every single one on the mark.
Is Your Child’s Speech Delay Just a Phase?
Every parent has probably heard the advice, "don't worry if your child is lagging developmentally — they'll catch up!" While this may be true in some cases, it doesn't apply to all. As we mentioned, every child develops at their own pace and has different strengths and weaknesses. While some kids may just be slow to hit the milestones, others might not hit the milestones at all. If your child is behind, the best thing you can do is seek help. Talk to your pediatrician and get suggestions on how to best support your child's development. While it’s true that kids will eventually catch up and — as most parents know — it’s best not to put too much stock in one single milestone, it’s also important to recognize the warning signs of a serious problem.
Warning Signs of Serious Problems
- Severe Language Delay - If your child doesn’t say a single word by the time they’re three years old, it could be a sign that there’s something more significant going on. A lack of language is a strong indicator that there’s a problem, but it can be hard to tell if it’s a temporary issue or a more persistent problem. That’s why it’s so important to get help, even if it seems like things are just taking a bit longer to develop. - Inability To Follow Basic Directions - If your child is developmentally delayed, they may also have trouble understanding and following instructions. This is especially common with younger kids who haven’t yet hit that language milestone. - Inability To Build Relationships - If your child has difficulty making friends and showing empathy towards others, it could be a sign of a developmental delay. This is especially common in kids with language delays or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). - Extreme Insecurity - One of the most obvious signs of a developmental delay is extreme insecurity or anxiety. If your child is often upset, afraid, or nervous, it could be a sign that something is off. - Self-Imposed Isolation - If your child is often alone or prefers to play alone, this could be a sign that they have trouble relating to others. It could also be a sign of sensory processing issues, which are common in kids with developmental delays.
3 Strategies to Help Strengthen Communication Skills
- Talk, Talk, Talk With Your Child - The best thing you can do to support your child’s communication skills is to talk, talk, talk with them. From the day they’re born, talk to your baby as much as possible. Babies can learn language from their environment starting from birth. Introduce new words, talk about your day, sing songs, read books — whatever you can do to foster communication. - Provide Opportunities for Conversation - While you’re always talking to your child, they’re also always learning. But they’re not just learning facts and figures — they’re learning social skills and how to communicate as well. So make sure to provide your child with plenty of opportunities to converse. Have regular family dinners, go on walks and outings with the family, etc. - Play Games That Build Communication Skills - While talking and conversation are important, so are games and activities that help your child develop communication skills. Some games and toys that can help with this include: - Bingo - Board or card games - Puzzles - Sticker charts -
Help your child Build Confidence and Self-Esteem
Communication skills are about so much more than just speaking. They’re also about confidence and self-esteem — two things that are essential to living a happy, healthy life. And while you can’t control how confident or self-assured your child is, you can help them build these skills. Have your child be a part of household chores so they can start learning how to help others. As they get older, encourage them to join sports teams and other extracurricular activities where they can meet new people and build self-esteem. Thanks for reading our article on speech delays in children. We hope you learned a thing or two and are better equipped to support your child's language skills and development. We encourage you to share this article with a friend or family member who might benefit from the information.
