“You’ve done extremely well on this problem set. Is this material too easy?”
She wouldn’t hold it against him if he was bored. Surely, there were other things the boy wanted to be doing with his time. She knew how it felt to sit in a class and know all the answers. Her grade school classmates hadn’t appreciated being corrected, and so she passed a lonely year frustrated and isolated. Naoto didn’t know what Chris’ experience was like or whether he simply preferred solitude, but at the very least, she could find more engaging material for him.
“You can tell me if it is. We can try to find a new arrangement for you.”
He hates school. The real reason that he decides to not continue his school after moving from Stockholm to Osaka is because he himself does not verily enjoy school at all. He only can rely to his oldest senior both in their band or team fighting; Nanakase Yashiro; to teach him, but he cannot depend to the same person every time since the other has some occupations to be solved, until he ends appearing as a new student on this school.
He is a pure apathetic person from the beginning, never concludes the cold paradigm to social matter appears because of his poignant past. He prefers isolating himself from the others; he never has even slight intention to blend himself with the others, since he believes that he could probably move from here quickly, so no problem to become an arrogant. He highly prefers to do some exercises from his teacher, listening to a music on the same moment. Subsequently, an entity appears in the front of the brunet’s sight. He quickly puts off his earphone, hearing the other’s behest.
❝ Yes … sure. ❞

Ah, so...this was the dilemma that had been troubling Rise all along. It made her heart skip to hear those words, but in her mind, she had hoped it was something else, because they both knew things would have been simpler that way.
“I...wasn’t aware that Kanji-kun had feelings for me,” she said slowly, trying to process it all. “I think of him only as a friend, Rise.” It was ‘Rise’ and not ‘Rise-san’ now. She’d grown closer to Rise over the years, and noticed a change in their friendship, however subtle. Knowing full well Rise’s role as an idol, Naoto had not intended to stir the waters, but now that the ice had broken, she found herself smiling. Naoto pulled down the brim of her hat. “I often wondered if I was reading too much into things, but this clears up my doubts... in the best way. I’m glad you’ve told this to me.”
The wheels of the taxi suddenly ground to a stop, and Naoto was made painfully aware that they were not alone, and that they had reached their destination. She dug into her wallet for some cash, saying to Rise, “L-Let’s speak inside.”
The idol blinked before frowning as she crossed her arms childishly. “Nooo! Naoto! You aren’t suppose to give me that chaaaaance.” Rise whined before sighing as she leaned her head back. Might as well tell her.
“For awhile now, maybe a bit after I realized I couldn’t have Senpai and after LMB, I realized that I had a crush on the wrong person.” She grumped before looking at the azurette next to her. “But I can’t do anything because one, I’m an idol, and two, it may tarnish your reputation!” She explained with an annoyed tone, ticked off by this all.
A loud sigh came from the idol as she covered her face. “But that’s what has been bothering me… And I hate it. Don’t you even know that Kanji had a crush on you too? That’s why I never even told you until now!” The auburn Lovers was clearly embarrassed but it was with good reason. Either way, it was hard on her. “I’m sorry…”

She felt foolish for not having realized it sooner. It simply never occurred to Naoto that Kanji would be interested in someone like her. Thinking back now, moments where his behavior had once confused her was starting to fall into place as glaring red signs. How could she have been so oblivious?
An awkward silence stretched between them felt and she felt she should say something. But when she did her voice came out panicky, far removed from her usually calm self, and took on a higher pitch as it did whenever she grew too nervous.
“I didn’t know th- that was how you felt. Since when...?”
Kanji awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck as he looked around at anything but her, waiting for some kind of answer from her. He always figured that Naoto knew what he was feeling since everyone else dropped hints that they knew. She was smart and had amazing skills of deduction so in the back of his mind he felt like she’d known all along. Of course none of that was the case but from his point of view it seemed rather likely.
“W-Well… I… uhh…” He broke the awkward silence but didn’t have anything to say since he didn’t want to force her to give him an answer. “You’re welcome…” That was all he felt he could say to her given the circumstances. For now he was going to wait a bit and see if she said anything else to him and if she didn’t then he’d try to make an awkward exit.

“I’m fine. I can keep going.” Being the last to join the party, Naoto had a lot of catching up to do in terms of coordination and combat experience. Sweat gathered on her brow, the strain of her first exploratory journey to the TV world was starting to show, but she refused to slow down the team even as her vision swam with swirling lights. Yukiko had cured her of the dizzy spell, but the aftereffects lingered.

“I am not pushing myself too hard. The current case is close to completion, but they seek to needlessly prolong the investigation. Is the evidence I offered not sufficient? Don’t they feel they have other, more important matters to attend to than to nitpick my qualifications?” The detective was not in the best of moods this morning. For one, she had not gotten much sleep. Secondly, her frustration with her older colleagues had led her to vent to Yosuke who had happened to run into her on the way to school this morning.

“I’m sorry to slow you down. I just can’t seem to get the hang of it..” She wished she could say she was enjoying the snow as much as anybody else, but the skis just weren’t cooperating with her, and Naoto never liked feeling like a burden. “I appreciate you seeing me down, senpai. I didn’t want to trouble Kanji-kun any further.”

Kanji was a puzzle to Naoto. He would often clam up or not meet her gaze, and at one point, she even worried that she’d done something to offend him. But what he was expressing here was the opposite. She understood now that this wasn’t a gift from a friend to a friend. Rather, he was saying that he saw her as something more. How could she have failed to realize it before? Kanji was not the only one flushing red now.
At his persistence, Naoto opened the present, pulling out a small doll that resembled herself. Her eyes widened as she noted its detail. It was elaborate, and he had obviously put a lot of time into crafting the present. She swallowed thickly, unable to look him in the eyes. “Thank you, Kanji-kun.” Of course she appreciated the gift, appreciated him as a friend, but more than a friend...? Naoto trailed off into awkward silence as she struggled to find her next words.

“M-Merry Christmas to you, too.” Startled by his reaction, Naoto managed return the holiday greeting. As she accepted the present he held out to her, however, certain questions began to whirl in her mind. Why her? Christmas was typically a day spent with lovers, and for Kanji to trek all the way here with a present...Not to mention, his agitation was starting to look a whole lot like embarrassment, red face and all. Did this mean Kanji Tatsumi was ... No, that couldn’t be, could it?
“Kanji-kun, do you, err... what I mean is, gift giving during Christmas holds certain implications and I- I don’t wish to misunderstand your intentions...”
When he met eyes with her he quickly looked away, blushing hard and feeling himself start to sweat from nervousness. “W-Well… y’know… I… uhhh…” Kanji wasn’t good at expressing himself so instead he just pulled the carefully wrapped present out and just shoved it out towards her with an out stretched arm. “H-Happy Christmas…. Wha?! Wait, no! Merry Christmas! MERRY!” Yelling like that after a blunder was pretty normal for Kanji to do, especially with a certain someone around.

This has been on my mind for long but I’m gonna do this - please reblog this if you’re comfortable with pre-establishing relationships. I do not mean “met at the grocery store two weeks ago” or “have a common friend”, but rather stuff like “have been best friends since kindergrden”, “go for a beer every friday”, “friends with benefits”, “dated in highschool”, “hate each other’s guts because -insert reason-” etc. Something meaningful (but not necessarily shippy) and I mean with muns/characters you have not interacted with, because I cannot believe I am the only one who prefers jumping right into the heart of the human interaction
#i'm all about this!!#but I am totally cool with 'have a common friend' or 'next door neighbors' and that sort of casual relationship#closer relationships are cool too

“Well... no. Mysteries have always intrigued me and no two cases are alike. There is still much to learn so I must stay focused. While it has its slow moments, I don’t see it as a chore.”
The pressures she faced as a female detective was different from the sort of pressures the girls in the idol industry faced. Naoto recalled her first meeting with Rise. The subdued girl from back then was different from the vibrant Rise she knew now. It sounded like her career was troubling her once again. Although Rise put on a smile, trying to laugh it off, Naoto suspected that Rise was not as nonchalant about it all as she acted.
“Would you like to talk about it? I may not be acquainted with the industry, but perhaps I can provide a sounding board for whatever is on your mind.”
Her face lit up. Tatsumi Textiles was booming because of Kanji’s little knit dolls?! That was something great to hear! But…something just hit her hard when that was mentioned. She knew she couldn’t have Yu. It was apparent much into the year after she met him and he wasn’t going for her signs. It was about Christmas during that year that she just gave up but continued on so it wasn’t weird.
Sighing, she moved to wipe her face a bit, trying to relax as she was revealed this info. When that was proven impossible, Rise just did the next action she could do: just act cheerful and happy.
“Huh? Of course! But that’s okay, it’s nothing new anyway! It’s just the way of an idol’s life!” She giggled happily, kicking herself mentally. Rise should have known that Naoto was keen, so keen. Why did she have to falter? Dammit, why?! Rise’s body language changed drastically when she glanced out the window.
“Naoto? Do you think…life sometimes is boring just doing the same thing over and over again?” She questioned before looking at the azurette next to her. “Do you get bored being an detective? Or is it fairly interesting? As an idol, it has its up and downs… But I feel like I’m not doing much with my life. And it’s because of a stupid idol law!” She sighed before shaking her head. “I’m sorry, just thinking about the past!” The auburn Lovers laughed happily before beaming at the azurette, trying to hide everything from her.

Naoto had expected to pass the day reading quietly as Christmas was more of a special occasion for couples, so it was a surprise when she heard the knock on the door and even more of a surprise to see who it was standing on her doorstep. “Kanji-kun?" Upon closer look, he appeared... agitated, but she could not discern why. For all of her intellect, Naoto remained oblivious to the signs. "What brings you here?”
@mansleuth
Kanji had gone out early on Christmas Eve to go surprise Naoto with a gift or in other terms it was means to a confession that he couldn’t outright say. With the carefully wrapped present hidden under his jacket to protect it from the light snow he made his way up to her door with a blush on his face. Hesitantly he raised his free arm and knocked on the door. His blood was rushing through his veins as he waited in the cold, awkwardly looking around to see if anyone was watching.

“Why don’t we keep this visit small? I’m sure everyone is concerned, but the hospital staff had wanted us to keep quiet last time.” They couldn’t trouble Yu even more when he had so much weighing on him already. “Shall we pick up some fruits or flowers for them on the way?”
Yosuke felt his body tense when Yu was brought up. It tore him up, watching his Partner try to be strong. Yosuke could tell just how much everything was eating away at him, and it appeared Naoto had caught on as well.
“Y-yeah. I think both of them could use some company.” Yosuke rolled his shoulders, trying to ease both the physical and mental tension still lingering. It really only helped the former.
“Should we invite everyone else, or would it be better to keep this visit small?”

“The last I heard from Kanji-kun, he was flooded with orders at Tatsumi Textiles. It seems the store has become quite the local attraction. Popular with children. Yu-senpai and I did speak over the phone and, ah, Yosuke-senpai was there as well. The two of them moved in together recently.”
She diverted her eyes from the other girl. Naoto knew Rise had liked Narukami in the past. Perhaps she still did. While the Investigation Team had bonded during that foggy year in Inaba, over time some bonds had grown stronger than others. Yosuke had been reluctant to admit it at first, but Yu was unflappable as always. She wondered how Yu could keep his calm. Cool and collected, that was the image Naoto strived to maintain, despite the questions that gathered on the inside when Rise expressed that the trip would be difficult for her.
“I--I hope there’s nothing troubling you about this arrangement, Rise. I understand you’ve been under pressure from your agency?”
The idol listened to the female, exhaling a bit as she learned that her manager didn’t pay her to be a body guard. Or pay her at all. That would have been very bad since Rise would have felt in debt to the poor azurette. But…things turned on Rise when she was talking about how comfortable she was with this.
“So you’re comfortable with this, huh…?” She said almost sadly before looking down. Oddly enough, it hurt the idol to know she was comfortable. But why did it hurt? Fiddling with her painted nails, she stopped before looking at the petite woman next to her. Rise had to break the tension developing inside her.
“I’m glad you see this as a break! But it’s gonna be hard on me.” She pouted then looked down again, trying to find things to talk about. Was their friendship getting to that point? “Uhm, Naoto! Have…Have you heard from Kanji?” She asked with a smile, hoping the azurette would have heard from their former classmate. “Or anyone for that matter? I think Yu-senpai told me he would be catching one of my shows on TV! The one that is gonna be aired!” She smiled, hoping that at least hid the idol’s worry and concern. There was no doubt about it, Rise liked Naoto in a way that it was illegal for idols… So she had to fight those feelings back. She… Rise was lying to herself again for the sake of her career. And for Naoto’s sake too. She deserved so much. Not some pretty idol that Japan, and now the whole world, loves.
