Sidenote: with a little retooling this is a fast way to take an old rendering, or model that you forgot to run Material ID on and make quick selection subsitute to help turbocharge a rendering and save time in selecting swaths of material and space

AO stands for Ambient Occlusion - it’s a pass in VRay that gives adde depth, minute shadow, and added textural detail - it’s gives the detailed PUNCH that really moves small variation and believably to your images.
‘Ambient Occlusion is a “hack” to create more realistic ambient illumination cheaply’
