Why build Mapmatical?
Because I don't think anyone else will. I spent a good amount of time looking for good world-building tools.
I created wikis; messed about in photoshop; tried going 3d with blender; very slowly built worlds in minecraft; tried to decipher autorealm; created enormous maps with adobe animator that pushed it to its limits; and on and on and on.
In each case the tools were lacking:
*No visual element for creating maps. *No text element for creating characters and lore. *No ability to easily share maps with others. *No ability to scale/zoom from a continent level to a building interior level. *Forced to make multiple maps and store them in multiple files. *Tools were difficult to learn or not geared toward productive map making. *It took too long to make maps.
What I wanted was something that had scaling capabilities in the style of google maps: which is to say that as you zoom in and out, what's displayed should change to match. To start editing a town or city, you shouldn't have to open a separate file, update it with any changes you made to your world map, and then proceed to make local changes. Instead, you should just zoom in to the city with your mouse wheel, see larger landmarks disappear and see buildings and streets start appearing. You should then be able to scroll in even further and see details within individual buildings.
*This application should be online, so that sharing and editing maps is as easy as giving out a link. *There should be a built in system for creating characters and lore. Like a wiki, but not requiring anyone to learn markdown to use it. *It should allow assets (ie trees/mountains/cliffs/doors/etc) to be reused within a library. *There should be a simple and intuitive system for layering. *It should be possible to mark items or notes as 'hidden'. Preventing viewers from seeing them. *It should be designed around world-building, and not as a general purpose tool so that it is quick and easy to make great looking maps.
I couldn't find anything even remotely close. So, I decided I'd build my own tool in my free-time. Which, at the time of this writing, is just getting started.
