a garden grows in queens
TL;DR Mapping the metoric rise and tragic fall of the garden plot in front of my apartment in Queens using street view. Zoom in for best results.
April 2012 I moved in fall of 2010. Here's the sad little plot on in front of my apartment.
Fun Fact: You can just barely see the gold standing ashtray on the second floor balcony I got from a recyled movie prop store.
July 2013 I went all in on the gardening. The front plot has giant sunflowers growing and zooming in on the second floor balcony reveals my attempt at a vegetable garden.
Fun Fact 1: I was most proud of the fist sized cantelope. Fun Fact 2: The giant sunflowers had giant heads. One day I came home and a head was sliced clean off. It was later revealed that my rugged I've-seen-some-shit older Greek neighbor cut it off with a machette after asking my downstairs neighbor if it was ok.
August 2014 Street view camera rolled through late in the season, but there were more sunflowers from the seeds that fell last year as well as a failed attempt at planting bulbs. Only a few popped up, it looked weird.
Fun Fact: Street view missed my best year ever, 2015. For shame.
May 2016 Beginning of the end - I moved out in April. You can begin to see the plot is in disarray. Some flowers came back from the year before, but weeds are taking over.
December 2017 Zooming in you can see the husks of all of the rogue sunflowers husks. These great-grand children of the OG sunflowers must have gone absolutely wild with no one culling them back. Add in a dash of trash as a treat.
November 2019 They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.
