Every time NJO Jaina thinks about how she should pull away from her family/friends/boyfriend and avoid making any new connections because she’s going to get killed in action sooner or later I want to cry. That is a CHILD. She’s 4’9” and resigned to her fate before she turns 18. And then she just… never gets better. Late NJO, LOTF, FOTJ. She always assumes the next mission will be her last, and she never slows down. Someone give this woman a hug and some hot chocolate. I don’t think anyone ever just sits her down and tells Jaina that it’s okay to live.

What Languages Star Wars Legends Would Speak/Learn from a Language Major
Ok this is kind of random and is basically one big long shower thought. Also for the sake of consistency everyone in this is from the US and their first language is English. This is entirely too thorough and I was running out of energy towards the end whoops.
Luke: Spanish
I think he'd prioritize communication and connection to his community above all else when it comes to language learning. He speaks GOOD Spanish and can keep up with conversations with native speakers with ease. Like if you airdropped him in Mexico, he'd be just fine. Probably make some friends and have a few laughs. Also a massive fan of latin-american literature, which does absolutely slap.
Mara: Bosnian (BCMS), Ukrainian, Polish, Russian (intermediate)
If we are to equate Mara's imperial job to being in intelligence, I think she would gravitate towards a lesser known critical language such as Bosnian and would go down the understandable Slavic-language-rabbit hole as a result. She would study Russian as well at the recommendation of her employer (the Empire/the CIA 🫣) but she's not fluent and not as interested in Russian as the other Slavic languages.
Leia: French, Spanish, Italian
I'm giving her the upper-class private school/intensive education trifecta. You can throw in Latin in there if you want. I don't think she's as into languages as Mara is, but she's pretty good at all three, and it's great for diplomacy and politics. While Luke learned latin-american Spanish (maybe closest to Mexican-Spanish?), Leia learned like the Spanish spoken in Spain (?).
Jacen: Mandarin Chinese (plus some French)
He's actually the guy in the "white guy SHOCKS restaurant staff and patrons by ordering in fluent Chinese" videos on YT. His Speaking is better than reading/writing, but his intonation is close to perfect and that's impressive enough. He speaks a little bit of French from learning it in childhood, but no higher than intermediate level.
Jaina: French
I can't see her being that big of a fan of languages; it's pretty time consuming and she just doesn't have the patience for that lol. Like Jacen, she was taught French by private tutors as a kid, but Jacen got to leave after he expressed interest in Chinese, but Jaina got stuck with French for a while rip. She's pretty good, not as good as Leia, but can still hold a conversation and trot it out when it's needed.
Anakin: French and Spanish
Similar story to Jaina, but he's actually into French and got pretty proficient. He definitely rubs that fact in Jaina's face in an annoying-little-brother way. Also picked up Spanish along the way due to Luke's influence, but his French is still stronger. Oh well. Maybe if he didn't die young he would be fluent in both----
Corran Horn: Irish
He just screams Irish-American to me. If he had the opportunity to go to a university that taught Irish in the US (they exist!!!) he would be all over that shit. Probably absolutely delighted his grandmother by pulling it out when he visited her over Christmas break. If he got really into it, I can see him travelling to Ireland to further study it post-bachelors.
Tahiri: Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, some Persian, and counting
She's the language genius of the Order (or whatever in modern au). Picked up Spanish from school, took up French and Italian on her own, studied Arabic in university, and started Persian further into university. She tutors romance language students on the side (mostly in Spanish, French/Italian are her weak points). She wants to learn it all. Will easily become one of those polyglots on YT but she's legit. iclal this is your star wars twin. The queen.
Han: Spanish (bad), German (also bad)
His Spanish isn't bad necessarily, he took it throughout middle/high school, but he just speaks it with the thickest American accent you will ever hear. Poor guy can't shake it no matter how much he tries :/ (he lowkey doesn't try that hard). He tried to pick up German by downloading Duolingo at one point, but similar to Jaina, he is not the most patient person and language learning is not for him.
Chewbacca: Vietnamese, solely because of this meme:

anyway that's it. thank you if you made it this far.

canon is wrong about anakin and ahsoka. i like her as a character but anakin could not take on a padawan and still be who he is at the start of ROTS are you crazy. i will always make her someone else’s (probably plo koon’s) padawan who fought with anakin for a significant duration of the clone wars.
they still have a mentor-mentee relationship but in a different way. anakin to ahsoka is like a slightly older coworker who she thinks is cooler than he actually is and who she can convince to do stupid dangerous shit more than most other jedi. he also reaffirms her understanding of being a jedi through the lens of the war.
on anakin’s end it’s like when you’re at a family gathering as a teenager and decide to hang out with your younger cousin because they’re the only other ‘kid’. he shifts from camaraderie to irritation with her but as a baseline he tolerates her because he’s one of the few other jedi he can see eye to eye with

i love this dark nest trilogy cover art. jaina in the green army surplus jacket every millennial was sporting in 2013. jacen looking like the river phoenix photos they hang up in the bathrooms of tokyo, he just got laid at 27 fuck all life. steve buscemi luke
#the eu artists were unhealthily attached to drawing luke with a combover#he looks like he's about to sell me a used car that i'll eventually die in a fiery crash#also jacen looks appropriately lonely and haunted in sort of a sexy way lore accurate#jaina solo#luke skywalker#jacen solo

oh, the heartbreaking story of mothers, daughters and fathers
i'm not drawing a parralel or saying they are the same. but the opposite. they are literally oppossites but still this two stories and families break my heart beyond measure
Bail and Breha who had been wanting a daughter for probably over a decade adopt a baby girl who's literally the light of their life
Mon and Perrin who had agree to no children and somehow ended up having a daughter that has been challenging them
Bail (and Breha) who fought so hard to keep their only child away from their rebelion and still got involved
Mon (and Perrin) who fought so hard to keep their only child away from their rebelion and ended up with so much distance between them
Bail and Breha who got killed for their rebelion and leaving their daughter 'alone' in the galaxy.
Mon who's daughter (probably) got killed for her rebelion and leaving her alone in the galaxy.

i don’t want to read the Star Wars EU/Legends stories and books, i want to read the fans’ discourse on writing styles, character analysis, author disputes (cause this franchise gets this in spades), and general criticism. i want to dive deep into all the background workings until i’m pruny. i want essays where there no holds are barred and the reviews are frank. your fluff and escapist fiction is my sociology project.

say what you will about attachment and the jedi and how wrong or right it is (i'm not here to discuss that) but at the end of the day the prophecy wasn't fulfilled through non attachment. and luke doing things differently than the previous jedi is a pretty big deal for the story. what destroyed the emperor was the very same parent-child bond the order was disencouraging and that luke would have been barred from having had he been born during the republic.
