Homemade Cake
What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten? Nothing can beat a homemade cake. Here is my birthday cake from last year. It’s a simple Victoria Sponge with whipped cream and strawberry jam filling. The eggs, butter, milk, cream and the jam all come off our smallholding. The flour is locally milled from the wheat that grows all around us, as we live in the Lincolnshire countryside, the…

If you were forced to wear one outfit over and over again, what would it be? I love the styles of the 40’s! Baggy trousers, braces and a fancy tie! Sensible jumpers and natural fibres. No skinny jeans here. Cufflinks and tie pins please, short hair and polish on your shoes! And the ladies? Those lovely skirts and of course stockings! I play in an authentic Vintage Dance Band, Hep n’ Swingin’.…

Are you connected?
How important is spirituality in your life? Spirituality, the feeling of being part of something greater than one’s self. The search for inner peace takes many paths. It often brings inner peace to those who find some connection with something greater, infinite or timeless. My inner peace was found by literally falling off the side of a mountain, nearly dying and surviving in terrible pain and…

Old book, new cover!
How do you practice self-care? Lindy hop Self care? That’s a new one on me! There are lots of catchy phrases flying round these days. I guess it the social media revolution that drives it. Our attention span is shrinking and everyone needs a hook (new one to me!) to get themselves noticed. Wellness, there’s another similar one, start looking and they’re everywhere! Eek! Like the one hit…

Time is precious!
How do you waste the most time every day? We are allotted so much of it, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. When we are young we certainly waste a great deal of it. We see our life stretched before us, with literally all the time in the world. We squander it in sleeping late, watching video games, hanging around doing nothing. As old age approaches we realise that we are reaching the bottom of the…

Banana sandwich!
Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood? Now this is getting creepy! Yesterday for my lunch I decided to go retro. I’d just baked a fresh loaf and decided on a childhood treat, a banana sandwich. Recipe: 2 slices fresh baked bread. 1/2 banana Butter Tbsp of white sugar Slice or mash (messy) half a banana. Eat the other half whilst preparing the sandwich. Butter…

It’s got to be Winnie!
Who is your favorite historical figure? Sir Winston Churchill The moment I saw this morning’s blog topic, I went with my first reaction. He was the right man for the job at a time when a country needed a strong leader. He wasn’t the easiest of characters to work with and had some bad habits, but he managed to drag Britain through an extremely hard period of war. I’m afraid that few modern…

I was 10 years old…..
Write about your first crush. Crikey Moses! Who picks these topics? Yes, I remember my first crush— DB—no name here sorry! We had just moved house yet again. Like the migration of geese, it seemed like an annual event. For a young lad who had 12 different schools before 17, I spent most of my childhood in an emotional turmoil. I was easy pickings for bullies and strange girls looking for fresh…

There’s only one for me!
What countries do you want to visit? There’s only one for me, Norway. Every country is beautiful, I have visited many and even lived in a couple, but Norway was by far the most stunning. From the endless days and everlasting sunsets of winter to the majestic fjords and cascading waterfalls that crash down the sheer cliff faces in the west. Truly a country that won my heart, with its love of…

My legs!
What’s your favorite thing about yourself? I have two! My legs are my favourite thing. Why? Because they take me anywhere I want. They don’t complain, they just get on with the job and take me wherever I want to go. It’s handy that I have two legs or I would have to hop everywhere. I’ve had them since birth and they’ve grown quite attached to me over the years.

Too late!
How do you want to retire? Already started without you! I’m 70 next month; I really don’t feel 70, more like 50. I retired as young as I could, to hell with not having the best car, best clothes etcetera. From around 50 I started retiring, or more accurately making my living from doing what I enjoy, playing music and now writing as well. I will never really retire in the traditional fashion,…

My car is ancient!
What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily? My 23 year old Renault Megane, still used daily. I don’t like new cars, they are too complex. I’m a DIY fiend and do most servicing and simple repairs myself . The car cost me next to nothing a few years ago, having been stored for around four years. I have a bread knife that is possibly 50 years old too, but I have something…

Early mornings
Describe one of your favorite moments. Just relaxing after our morning walk Our favourite time of the day. Every morning I rise with the sun. Right now that is 5am. The birds are singing, the night creatures of the fields are still about. Owls, deer, rabbits and hares are wending their way home to doze through another summer’s day. The mornings are undisturbed by people or cars, the silence is…

Butterflies
What notable things happened today? The great butterfly count in the UK is not far away. Last year I had to report that sadly I didn’t see one in the hour allocated to count them. The numbers are reducing drastically. Notably today, in the sunshine of late afternoon, as we walked along a hedgerow out of the wind, two tortoiseshell butterflies suddenly appeared. Notably too is the fact that…
