A few things I wanna say, because I have literally not seen enough "toxic" and "delusional" Rinas for people to be angry.
1. Most "toxic" rinas are joking. We're not THAT angry or salty about Portwell...
2. Most "delusional" rinas are aware of the delusion. We literally make fun of ourselves for going too far with our analyses...
We got angry not at portwell getting together, but because Ricky and Gina's broken relationship wasn't acknowledged for half the season. Not even a word was uttered about (let's not even say "between"...) them in the finale, hence #cancelhsmtmts (which, might I add, only meant I wouldn't be watching the show anymore if they aren't going to be acknowledged).
We make up theories and look so deep into their relationship (if they're standing next to each other, connecting far ass dots together, etc.), because we have been DEPRIVED of content. Have you guys not heard of "crumbs"?
That is all...for the PEOPLE AT THE BACK

I'm not gonna go as far to say that Portwell is a plot device, but they're definitely not endgame. They certainly like each other a lot, and are very cute together, but so many things point to their relationship having a bad ending.
1. This is Gina's first relationship.
Gina is young. She's still finding herself, and her place in East High, like Tim said in his interviews. I think Gina's going to learn a lot in her first relationship. She'll learn to let people in, and it will give her the confidence she needs as she moves forward, and meet new people or old people 👀. EJ is obviously quite experienced in dating, and that experience will allow Gina to go into deeper relationships in the future.
2. EJ is leaving.
A lot of people use this argument, but I'm going to look at it in a different angle. The way I see it, it's not really about Gina needing someone to stay, it's more about the fact that their relationship won't have enough time to develop before EJ has to leave for college. Again, this is Gina's first relationship, and she'll need time to understand what it means to date someone, and for the relationship to stabilize. Maybe they could try long distance, but seeing your boyfriend or girlfriend everyday in high school is very different from being in a relationship outside of that. With EJ busy with college, and Gina being a high school junior, they'll find it hard to make time for each other, and this might make Gina feel insecure in the relationship. It will inevitably end in them breaking up for each other's best interests.
3. Their connection isn't as deep as the one Gina has with Ricky.
Right off the bat in season 1, Gina and Ricky gravitated toward each other, and understood each other without question. Gina and EJ don't have that. I view their relationship as a simple crush. They have cute moments together, and it's very sweet, but we've never seen Gina confide in EJ about things. The couch scene was very much EJ focused, and even then, they couldn't find a common ground. They were able to support each other, but it's very clear that Gina doesn't feel like she can talk about her issues with EJ. We saw how even with Jack, she was able to talk more openly, and express herself more. All Gina and EJ have had so far are little jokes, and sweet moments, nothing deep enough to solidify a strong relationship. I think that it will be inevitable for Gina to confide in Ricky and vice versa eventually down the road. They're able to support each other with understanding. They find comfort in each other and I think that's extremely important. Gina needed someone to like her back, and she got that with EJ, but it's quite one sided, and although Gina likes EJ, it's just not the same.
4. Gina and Ricky haven't gotten closure.
It's great that Gina is moving on, but the fact that she hasn't been able to get closure with Ricky is going to be a roadblock in her relationship with EJ. She can't keep on ignoring him. There's definitely going to be a point where EJ isn't there, and she's going to need someone to confide in. Sure she can talk to Ashlyn or Nini, but only Ricky knows her entire story, and where she's coming from. This entire season, they haven't had anyone to confide in, because Gina chose to ignore Ricky, and Ricky took that as a sign to take a step back and let Gina breathe. But because of this, they've both been quite miserable, and we see them struggling on their own, especially Ricky. It might even be Ricky who goes to Gina for advice, allowing old feelings to resurface.
All in all, I'm excited to see where Gina and EJ's relationship will lead. They're very cute together, and I'm sure EJ will try his best to treat Gina well, but there will be something missing, and just as things are in the right place, everything will change (another thing Tim mentioned in his interview).
Also, I think Ricky and Lily's relationship, will catapult Ricky into finally understanding that there is only one Gina. Lily is obviously very similar to season 1 Gina, but only on the surface. She was just more straightforward with her confession, which made it easier for Ricky to understand her intentions. He's going to realize very quickly that he was wrong about Lily, because her stealing the harness can't be kept a secret for very long. Once that happens, he'll see what he missed out on with Gina, and because I think Portwell will last a little longer, their relationship will definitely cause some jealousy on Ricky's part. At that point, he'll have fully moved on from Nini, which will open his eyes up more.
I think all of this matches up to the things that Tim said in his interviews quite well. Ricky and Gina will always be in each other's minds, no matter how far back they are in there. Their feelings, and the things that happened between them in season 1 will have to be acknowledged, and when that happens, they will inevitably find themselves attracted to each other again.
I'm hoping that the summer season allows them to explore these stories in depth, coming to an end when Ricky and Gina finally are at the same place in their own journeys.

Glad to see in the next episode, we see Ricky firmly letting Nini go through song and closing that chapter of his life.
And back when Tim talked about Gina figuring out herself, and Ricky being a part of it in, I wonder if we see that in episode 9?
Gina’s is no longer wearing the duke hoodie, from what we see in the new promo! (still yet to be tbd... but that is the popular theory out there rn). And if it’s true, then I think this episode will bring to light Ricky being apart of Gina figuring herself out. Really he has been this whole season, and clearly Jack is being used as a plot device for Gina to really sit down and make it clear to herself where her heart is. These last few episodes we’ve seen Gina really push the majority of her issues this season to the side, and I think this episode is when we really see her confront them. Whether that be regarding Ricky and EJ, or salt lake city as a whole... I think it’s pretty clear that we are going to see Gina finally make a decision and then in the next episodes take actions that get her what she wants.

Am i the only one who wants Ricky to complete go off on his mom? I'm talking, yelling, accusing, raw emotions to the point where he yells and his voice cracks. That pure emotion when he gets to the breaking point and he yells at her and says something like "you want me to confide in you, you want to fix me but you're the person that broke me!!" and he screams it and his voice cracks at the end and just tears. Rolling down his face. And now that we've seen the promo pics we know that Ricky stays with his mom during spring break so maybe he can tell her off, cuz dude, i want that so bad. She left him when he needed her the most and we saw a little bit of a push back at the end of season 1, but i just want to see what happens with them this season. And I really want to see how Josh would act in a scene like that.

Can Rina catch a break? First we have to fight Rini, and now Portwell? I can’t do it anymore!

Ok, honestly. I kind of agree with Ricky. The rose song really doesn’t fit in the Beauty and the Beast storyline. Like at all. I know he’s just worried/angry/ whatever, but I’m serious. It doesn’t fit in at all. And also I’m kind of angry. Because this is supposed to be Ashlyn’s show and her chance, and yet again it’s all about Nini and her being the big star. Idk, Maybe the writers redeem themselves in the next episodes, but right now I just dont like this storyline. And I’m very angry on Ashlyn’s behalf.

YOU WANNA KNOW WHY WE’RE WINNING?! LONG DISTANCE ISN’T WHAT’S BREAKING RICKY AND NINI UP. INCOMPATIBILITY IS THE ISSUE, AND I’VE BEEN SAYING IT ALL ALONG. THEY JUST DON’T WORK TOGETHER ANYMORE AND ARE GONNA HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT THE HARD WAY!!!

The song was foreshadowing. Nini is the fairytale. Ricky thinks that he loves Nini but he doesn’t. He’s confusing his feeling for fear of being like his parents with love. He isn’t in love with Nini. He’s in love with idea of everything staying the same. He doesn’t want to split up the way that his parents did. Gina is the one he actually likes but he’s conflicted because that would be a big change and we know that Ricky isn’t too comfortable with change. Ricky has forced himself to believe that he is in love Nini because he doesn’t know what he would do if there wasn’t something familiar to him in his life. His relationship with Nini is the only thing that hasn’t changed and he’s holding on to that. The truth is that he has feelings for Gina and is afraid to act on them.

Took the words out of my mouth... This is the most sensible and sincere rebuttal I've ever seen in relation to Nini...
Hi, who else is tired of the Nini show?
Literally every other character is more interesting, yet they are always but on the backburner for her. I don’t need to see Ricky and Nini facetiming for the hundredth time- crying that they miss each other, yet take no real steps to make the effort. I don’t want to see her complain about YAC, when she literally didn’t deserve her spot there in the first place. I really don’t care for her having a role in the play she didn’t even audition for, which, will somehow pull her back to the forefront when people like Gina, Seb, and E.J. are being cast to supporting roles AGAIN. I don’t want to sit through another solo, where she complains about the things in her life and then continues to take no steps to make a change. The Nini we saw last season is the same one we’re getting now. Where is her character progression? Where are her flaws that allow the viewers to sympathize with her actions when all we see is someone who is apparently perfect. It’s hard to root for someone when they’re presented in a way that’s so two dimensional and boring.  Like all of us can agree that she’s the most boring character right? It’s hard to care for a character that never reaps the repercussions of her actions. The play- her whole performance was terrible. This girl literally stopped mid performance because the person she wanted up there with her wasn’t and then she’s given a spot at a prestigious acting school? okay. Nini spent the majority of last season treating Ricky like trash, making him doubt his spot in the play and the theatre community and then is rewarded with getting him back at the end with a declaration of love? Now this season he’s placing the sole reason he came back to the show on her, when that’s just isn’t the truth. IT WAS GINA. And this season, apparently in the school of her dreams that her mothers worked hard to pay for gets to come back to EHS and has a role specially created for her (not confirmed but is pretty apparent to me). ? Like get that bullshit out of my face, I want to see a character use these missteps as a tool for growth rather than everyone around her tell her it’s okay and placate her in the same stuck position she is in. Nini should be allowed to be framed in a not so flattering light, rather than always having to be shown as the down to earth, perfect, nice girl. It’s tired and played out!

It is not possible that only I am concerned with what Season 2 has in store for Gina ... unfortunately I think they are going to pretend that nothing happened between Gina and Ricky ... 😞💔
