A.) Choose one photo from a magazine, newspaper, or website and analyze what it is trying to tell readers. If it’s a photo for an advertisement, describe what the photos are doing for the product sold.

In this picture it shows that it is an advertisement from a magazine. I that photo as you can see she is a model which known as Bella Hadid, she launched “Dior: DIORSHOW PUMP’N’VOLUME”. The brunette model poses with the all new Diorshow Pump ’N’ Volume mascara in hand. In addition to her glam lashes as she used the product, you need to use this product so that you will achieve to have a fluttery, long curl and thick lashes as you can see in that picture. She was announced as the new face of Dior Makeup in last year, and Bella Hadid fronts her first campaign for the beauty brand. This was here dream to be partnered and to work with this iconic brand since she was child and she is still shocked and grateful about this. This photo is captivating and encouraging us most especially to the beauty gurus and to the women who has not so long and not really captivating to use this product to achieve the eyelashes you want like her.

B.) Choose an existing pop song and interpret its lyrics. Decipher what the song is all about and list down the situations being narrated in the song.

The song that I chose is “Tenerife Sea” by Ed Sheeran. For the first verse he detailed description of the woman highlights the deep affection he feels for her. Almost as if it’s a bride on her wedding day, the girl has a “wonderful” dress, nice hair, and a strong passionate love – one that’d be needed for someone to depict a person like this. Then the pre-chorus he says that if he were to die at that moment, he would be content, because he had the girl and that is all he wanted. The sight of her, is everything he needs to be happy because she is the perfect girl to him. All the qualities that she possesses, is all the qualities he’s been looking for in a girl. She is all he needs in life to be happy. She will make his life complete and if he has her, he knows the rest of his life will be fine, no matter what happens. While the chorus is Ed knows that he is in love with the girl. He keeps it plain and simple and honest – it’s also monosyllabic, meaning that each word in the hook is one syllable. This reiterates the clarity and simplicity of his feelings. The repetition also shows that he is absolutely sure that he is in love and the melody he used in that part is soft and soothing, as if he shows how sincere and how he loves that girl that she’s giving peaceful comfort to him. The verse two is he may be referring to seeing the girl in a new light on a more metaphorical level. Perhaps this is a moment of realization of where he is finally discovers his true feelings towards her. He is so in awe of her that it is as if it overpowers him. The girl’s eyes are blue like the sea’s blue and is also sparkling and beautiful, like the Tenerife Sea. It attracts and enchants him. “All of the voices” could be referring to the media as well as everyone that spreads rumours. None of those rumours really matter because she is what is true and real. When she speaks, he knows that the only thing that matters is what they have – that’s what’s real and he would follow her every command and do practically anything for her, even “disappear” out of her life that would make her happy. While at the bridge the “Lumiere darling, Lumiere over me” ‘Lumiere means light’ so this girl is the light in his life. She is so beautiful — inside and out — that she lights up his life. He realizes he loves her and by asking her to “shine over him” he is essentially asking her to be his girlfriend/be a part of his life. Then he repeated the pre-chorus and the chorus. And the outro however, mentions the name Beth, confirming that it refers to his ex girlfriend (despite conspiracy theories that this is all a ruse and it’s actually about Taylor Swift). The outro features a more reflective tone, inferring that they’ve since separated and he’s reflecting on what they once had – potentially by looking at an old photograph. So this song made my heart wants to be inlove with this man or kind of man because I can feel his sincerity in this song and how inlove he is with the girl. I usually sing this song or listen to this song if I am broken hearted or disappointed with the man who I loved and who I’ve entertained because they’ve never show me sincerity as this guy showing in this song. I wish there is a guy like him who will love me as this guys shows love to his girl because as I can see there is no guy right now that has a great mind and personality that will just love one girl and no another.

C.) Pick a music video and watch it several times. Study it closely to see if the visuals are affecting the song. Or is the song helping the visuals in a way?

This music video “Can I be him” by James Arthur, I watched and listen to this everytime. This is also one of my favorite song. In this music video as you can see the guy who sitted at the back is the one who sing to this song. The girl who entered the train is the girl he loves, but the girl has a boyfriend or another love ones. As the girl entered the bus his eyes went to her and he just looked at her, he wants to approach the girl and ask about how her life was going on because this girl his first love and who he loves from the very first moment but the girl love someone else the lyrics was “You walked into the room and now my heart has been stolen, You took me back in time to when I was unbroken now you're all I want”

And at this part of music video he just stared at the girl faraway, he wants to approach the girl but he is shy and he was thinking if he is going to tell the girl about his feelings to her at the very first moment and until now he thinks that he still loves her. He wants to ask if the girl is still with the boy she loves and if they were still together.

In this part of the music video he was going to approach the girl and talk with her,but he was taken aback when he saw that the girl he loves are still together with the guy who always broke her heart. He wish that it was him, he wish that he is the guy that girl loves and will take care of her and he will never hurt her.

In this part of music video there is another girl who is watching him and starring at him.

And then the last part he realize that there is also someone else who is also loving him and wishing for him to be love someone else that also going to love him the way he loves the girl.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

As we discuss about media and information literacy, let's talk about first about media, information, and literacy means. And also we’re going to tackle about the process of communication, Concepts in Shannon Weaver Model, Feedback Mechanism and the Kinds and types of Media.

MEDIA

This is a term which covers all the means of communication which have functions such as informing, raising awareness, education, socialization, entertainment and agenda setting, including all kinds of oral, written and visual images.  

INFORMATION

Information is stimuli that has meaning in some context for its receiver. When information is entered into and stored in a computer, it is generally referred to as data. After processing (such as formatting and printing), output data can again be perceived as information. Any fact or set of facts, knowledge, news, or advice, whether communicated by others or obtained by personal study and investigation; any datum that reduces uncertainty about the state of any part of the world; intelligence; knowledge derived from reading, observation, or instruction.

LITERACY

Literacy is customarily contrasted with orality (oral tradition), which encompasses a broad set of strategies for communicating through oral and aural media. In real world situations, however, literate and oral modes of communication coexist and interact, not only within the same culture but also within the very same individual. Literacy, capacity to communicate using inscribed, printed, or electronic signs or symbols for representing language.

So that you’ll understand how information and media flows each other, we must understand first how basic communication works.

The 6 components that enable the transmission of message and information:

Sender-  the sender is  the person who sends his ideas to another person.

Message-  the message is the content of communication and may contain verbal, non-verbal or symbolic language.

Channel of communication-  the channel is the medium or vehicle by which we are able to transmit the message to the recipient.

Decoding-  the decoding is the process of turning communication into thoughts.

Receiver-   the receiver is the destination of the message.

Feedback-  the feedback is the response of a receiver to a message. It is an indication that communication has taken place successfully or not.

THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS:

The sender decides the message to be transmitted.

The sender encodes the message.

The sender selects the appropriate channel pf communication.

The receivers receiver the message.

The receiver decodes the message.

The receiver provides the feedback to the sender.

THE SHANNON-WEAVER’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION:

The Shannon and Weaver Model of Communication is a mathematical theory ofcommunication that argues that human communication can be broken down into 6 key concepts: sender, encoder, channel, noise, decoder, and receiver.

SHANNON-WEAVER’S COMMUNICATION PROCESS:

The Shannon Weaver model starts with the sender or “information source”. They are the person (or object, or thing – any information source) who has the information to begin with. The information source starts the process by choosing a message to send, someone to send the message to, and a channel through which to send the message.

The next step in the Shannon Weaver model is the ‘encoder’. The encoder is the machine (or person) that converts the idea into signals that can be sent from the sender to the receiver. The Shannon model was designed originally to explain communication through means such as telephone and computers which encode our words using codes like binary digits or radio waves. However, the encoder can also be a person that turns an idea into spoken words, written words, or sign language to communicate an idea to someone.

The next step in the Shannon Weaver model is the ‘channel’. The channel of communication is the infrastructure that gets information from the sender and transmitter through to the decoder and receiver. We sometimes also call this the ‘medium’.

The next step in the Shannon Weaver model is ‘noise’. Noise interrupts a message while it’s on the way from the sender to the receiver. It’s named after the idea that ‘noise’ could interrupt our understanding of a message.

The next step in the Shannon Weaver model is ‘decoder’. Decoding is the exact opposite of encoding. Shannon and Weaver made this model in reference to communication that happens through devices like telephones. So, in this model, there usually needs to be a device that decodes a message from binary digits or waves back into a format that can be understood by the receiver. If we’re talking about direct communication between people without the use of technology, there may still be a need for decoding. For example, you might need to decode a secret message, turn written words into something that makes sense in your mind by reading them out loud, or you may need to interpret (decode) the meaning behind a picture that was sent to you.

The next step in the Shannon Weaver model is ‘receiver’ The receiver is the end-point of the original Shannon and Weaver model of the technical communication process. This is the step where the person finally gets the message, or what’s left of it after accounting for noise.

The final step in the Shannon Weaver model is ‘feedback’. Actually, the ‘feedback’ step was not originally proposed by Shannon and Weaver in 1948. Norbert Weiner came up with the feedback step in response to criticism of the linear nature of the approach. (‘Linear’ means that the messages are only going one way). Feedback occurs when the receiver of the message responds to the sender in order to close the communication loop. They might respond to let the sender know they got the message or to show the sender: Whether they got the message clearly without noise. How well they understand the message 

FEEDBACK MECHANISM

Feedback can be negative or positive. Positive feedback indicates that the sender can continue his communication in the same manner as before. Negative feedback on the other hand, indicates a need for a change in the manner of communication. The feedback tells the sender many things such as whether the message is received successfully or not, whether the receiver liked it or not, whether the choice of channel/medium was appropriate etc. Feedback is the final component and one of the important factors in the process of communication.It is defined as the response given by the receiver to the sender.

MEDIA LITERACY

  > Media literacy is the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE, CREATE, and ACT using all forms of communication. Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and understand the messages they're sending.

Media literacy skills can help youth and adults:

Helps us develop critical thinking skills

Helps us understand how media messages shape our culture and society

Helps us identify target marketing strategies

Helps us recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do

Helps us recognize bias, spin, misinformation, and lies

Helps us create and distribute our own media messages

INFORMATION LITERACY

    > Information literacy includes the ability to identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively. The role of information literacy is vital for lifelong learning as it enhances the quality of education both in learning environments and in educational settings.

Importance of Information literacy:

Finding the right information and knowing how to use it

Assessing information for credibility 

Important skill for the digital age

Forms the basis for lifelong learning

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDIA:

Media is such a part of our everyday lives that much like air we easily forget about it. Media can be defined as the various media vehicles used to transmit messages to large amounts of people.

TRADITIONAL MEDIA

Traditional media generally defines the advertising we’ve seen for almost 100 years. These are the tried-and-true methods that businesses have relied on for years. These channels can be pretty effective, and for many businesses, they account for the entirety of the advertising budget.

PRINT MEDIA

Print Media a medium that disseminates printed matter that are used to inform, instruct and motivate learners. It also includes small-circulation community-based newspapers and magazines as well as alternative print publications aiming at smaller audiences with issues and opinions beyond the mainstream.

Print media examples:

Magazines, newspapers, flyers, newsletters, scholarly journals and other materials that are physically printed on paper are examples of print media. 

BROADCASTING MEDIA

Broadcast media is radio and television. Even amidst the pop culture dominance of the internet, broadcast media still commands the largest share of the advertising pie nationwide. Put the audio and visual media to work for you as your company earns larger market share, stronger branding, and increased sales. If you are looking for cost-efficient lead generation, you need to be looking at radio and television advertising.

INTERNET MEDIA

Internet media is a catch-all term for all forms of electronic communication that have appeared or will appear since the original mainly text-and-static picture forms of online communication. This media usually includes any and all of these: Online news, streaming videos, and streaming audios, 3-D and virtual reality environments and effects, highly interactive user interfaces, mobile presentation and computing capabilities, CD and DVD media, telephone and digital data integration, online communities, live internet broadcasting.
