full book review: deep end by ali hazelwood (spoilers ahead!)
rating: ★★★★★
where do i even begin? the only books i've read by ali hazelwood have been the love hypothesis and checkmate. even though i loved both of those books, i think that this book has taken checkmate's spot of my second favorite ali hazelwood book (you can pry the love hypothesis from my cold, dead hands.).
to be honest, while i'm not necessarily opposed to it, the amount of spice in this book shocked me. i believe that there were only one or two explicit scenes in the love hypothesis, and obviously there were none in checkmate, but i genuinely did not think that there would be this much. i wouldn't consider this a bad thing, i was just fully unprepared lol.
lukas and scarlett. oh lord. genuinely one of my favorite book couples to date. i relate to scarlet so much about not wanting to try something in fear that you'll fail. and i just feel like lukas was the perfect person for her in that aspect. she was able to do an inward dive when it was just him and her. like.... ugh i can't even describe it. i love them so much. also when he said that he's been in the palm of her hand the whole time... i fucking melted you guys. they're so perfect. also, i love the way lukas handled scarlett's trauma. he never questioned it when she was uncomfortable, never invalidated her feelings. he was genuinely curious about her safety and well-being. i love him for that.
now my only "gripe" with this novel is penelope. just her whole character. i honestly did not like her one bit, except when she was explaining why clarissa bullied her. i felt like an ounce of sympathy then, but that was it. why did she have to be brought up every five seconds? why was she such a center point in lukas's and scarlett's relationship? i don't blame scarlett for stressing about it, but i just wish she didn't have to. that whole debacle at the NCAA at the end of the book genuinely made me want to punch something. YOU TOLD THEM TO GET TOGETHER!!! YOU BROKE UP WITH LUKAS!!! MAKE. UP. YOUR. MIND.
anyway... all in all i really, really enjoyed this book. I was in a reading slump when i picked up this book and needed something to get me back in again. this book definitely did the trick. i almost cheered out loud when scarlett completed her first inward dive. i loved all of the characters (beside pen) and i felt so immersed in the story. i literally know nothing about diving or swimming but that was a non-issue. i would 100% recommend this book to anyone looking to get out of a reading slump, or anyone just looking for a fun summer read.
