“Well, I’m grateful to you all, even if you almost killed me. But I don’t come up here because I’m sad.”
“No?”
“Nope. I come up here because I’m happy. Let me show you something.”
In a show that was pretty much the most formative show of my toddler years, “Donkey for a Day” eventually became the most important episode to me and, in my adult years, it has become my refuge. In it, the gang becomes convinced that they somehow have to fix Eeyore’s apparent misery, and decide to do so by introducing him to the things that cheer them up, whether he wants to join in or not. Meanwhile Piglet, whose concerns started the whole thing, grows increasingly despondent because he feels he has nothing entertaining or interesting to offer, only to be the one to be let in on what really does make Eeyore happy. The overall lesson that happiness is subjective and not always obvious in everyone, and that it shouldn’t be forced, is one that I’ve clung to a lot in my low times, especially in the periods where I feel worse for not being able to be happy.
