At What Age Should Men Start Worrying About Low Testosterone?
Low testosterone is a major problem for millions of men who are otherwise in good overall health. Men need to be concerned about testosterone because it is a crucial sex hormone that has multiple effects on their overall health, sex drive and physical appearance. Find out what causes testosterone levels to get dangerously low and learn about some safe and effective ways to prevent or reverse the problem below.
It’s Complicated
It’s long been known that overall levels of testosterone in men decrease as they get older. The average over-50 male in modern Western society displays many symptoms of low testosterone, and so do many men who are younger than that. UW Health explains that most medical researchers measure testosterone based upon how much of the hormone is present in the blood, measuring it in nanograms per deciliter. As a general guideline, a specific amount, 300 ng/dl, is viewed as the cutoff point between normal and low levels of testosterone. For every 100 men, at least two show obvious signs of being well below that critical level. Many more are either on the borderline or slightly above the 300 ng/dl mark. Men need to worry about low testosterone levels because when testosterone levels get too low, you can start seeing all sorts of health problems, including symptoms like decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED) and weak bones. Testosterone is vital for male health because it helps the body create muscle mass, hair and sperm.
Lifestyle is a Major Factor
Andro Fuel explains that the good news is that there are many ways to naturally boost your testosterone that only depend on lifestyle and diet changes. When lifestyle changes are approached sensibly, even men who are well past middle age can do things to raise their testosterone levels considerably. For younger men who suffer from a lack of this vital hormone, lifestyle changes can have fast and visible effects. How can the average man who needs to increase the amount of testosterone in his blood deal with the situation? It’s all about educating oneself and discovering what factors contribute to your own lack of testosterone. There are many factors that can cause low T; things like diet, activity levels, passive ingestion of chemicals, certain prescription drugs, emotional states and sleep habits all have the potential to directly change the body’s static amount of testosterone.
Soy, No. Zinc, Yes.
When it comes to testosterone, soy is the enemy. For men who use soy protein as a supplement and who tend to overdo it, the results can be disappointing. Studies have shown that even moderate amounts of soy protein can significantly reduce the amount of testosterone in the blood, so if you’re concerned about low testosterone, you should try to avoid soy as much as possible. Check ingredients lists closely because a surprising number of products include soy as an ingredient. Zinc is at the opposite end of the spectrum as far as testosterone is concerned and can help to increase it.
Go Easy on the Adult Beverages
Alcohol probably has no negative effects on testosterone levels when it is used in moderation. In fact, those who occasionally drink beer, wine and hard liquor might enjoy a slight health benefit compared to those who never consume any alcohol at all. However, heavy drinkers can experience low testosterone as well as unwelcome changes in other reproductive hormones in the body.
Grains, Grains, Go Away
The relationship between grains and testosterone levels is a strange one. Gluten Free Society explains that not all grains have a detrimental effect on the hormone, but gluten seems to be a major contributor to low testosterone. This situation is a good example of the concept that it is possible to increase testosterone levels in a completely natural way. That means adding some foods to the diet and avoiding others. Except in extreme medical cases, there is no need for taking testosterone supplements or going on strict diets. Nor is there a need for massive amounts of exercise. Testosterone is one hormone that responds well to natural manipulation with time and diligence.
Can Meditation Increase Testosterone Levels?
Protocol8 explains that most people don’t view purely mental activities as a way to deal with a low testosterone problem, but it is possible to meditate your way to better hormones. Decades of research has shown that adults who meditate regularly tend to have lower levels of cortisol in their bloodstream. Cortisol levels directly impact lower testosterone problems because cortisol raises the body’s stress level in many ways. Just 20 minutes of meditation each day can reduce cortisol levels significantly. When cortisol levels go down, growth hormones, including testosterone, go up as a result. So, in addition to all the dietary and exercise changes, it does apparently help men to incorporate meditation into their daily routines. Lower cortisol and higher growth hormones can mean an easier path to muscle building and faster recovery after sessions of exercise.
Sunscreen and Cardio No-No’s
Sunscreen is a part of life for anyone who spends time outdoors. Medical literature has touted the benefits of applying the creamy, sun-blocking goo for years, and the public has followed that advice in large part. Kitchen Stewardship explains that the problem is that most sunscreen products contain enough estrogen to interfere with testosterone production in the body of adult males. There are safe and effective products that don’t contain estrogen, but it’s imperative to read labels and do research to find the right ones.
Weightlifting and Testosterone Levels
Some studies have shown that so-called “toning” weight workouts do not have an effect on testosterone levels. It appears, based on research, that short sessions of power-style lifting can help boost the hormone’s level rather well. For men who already incorporate weight work in their exercise regimen, it might help to focus on lifting heavier weights for fewer reps and taking longer rest periods between sets. If you don’t currently strength train, taking up heavy lifting can help boost your testosterone levels.
Work on Posture
NoGym.com explains that some psychologists have suggested that posture might play a role in testosterone production. Actively working to get rid of a slumping posture and trying to stand up straight has effects on self-image, mood, and possibly increases the amount of testosterone in a person’s blood. Researchers theorize that “power postures” tell the brain to send signals out that generate more testosterone.
Lose Weight
One of the more reliable ways to boost testosterone is to drop excess weight. Adult men who carry between 10 and 20 extra pounds (and that includes the majority of the adult male population in the U.S.) can ramp up their testosterone levels by losing the extra fluff. Losing excess weight has many other health benefits as well, including the restoration of proper blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Dropping a few unneeded pounds is pretty much a win/win. There’s no reason to fly blind when it comes to dealing with testosterone levels. Everyone who wants to address the problem should speak with a doctor before embarking on a major change of diet or lifestyle. There’s no reason to put your health in danger by going to extremes, either. In most cases, it’s easy enough to improve testosterone levels with moderate changes to your diet and lifestyle.

We all know Iskra Lawrence for breaking down society's standards of beauty and encouraging people to strive for happiness, not a number on the scale. The body-positive role model has appeared in countless Aerie campaigns with zero retouching and is always posting inspirational and motivational messages on the 'gram.
In her most recent post, in honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, she opened up about her struggles with body dysmorphia and disordered eating. "I want to combat the stigma around this mental illness," she wrote alongside side-by-side photos of herself. The photo of the left shows Lawrence airbrushed and Photoshopped to an almost unrecognizable degree; on the right, a photo of her today, rocking a bikini on the beach, truly happy with being "perfectly imperfect."

"I wish I had known that Photoshop and retouching didn't make me perfect or beautiful," she wrote. "Also that I didn't have to be a 'male fantasy.' Look how posed the pic on the left is, how squished my poor boobies are. This was again another societal fantasy I thought as a woman I was expected to be." 
Lawrence spent years of her career as a model, thinking she was supposed to look a certain way in order to fit in. "When I started modeling, I was so focused on the scale, so focused on looking a certain way, that I didn't even realize I had a mental health issue," she previously told Shape. "I was working out so hard, to the point where I was dizzy and my eyesight would become blurry. I was obsessively writing down how many calories I was consuming, and my diet was so poor that I was constantly tired and would often fall asleep in the middle of the day. Despite that, mentally, I always felt like a failure because I could never reach the aesthetic or standard I'd set for myself or what I thought society expected of me."

Blinded by obsession over changing her appearance, Lawrence was ignoring all the signals her body was giving her. "It was basically screaming that I was hurting myself, but I continued to ignore it until one day, something just clicked," she said. "I stopped trying to alter what I looked like and accepted my body as it was. With that, I also gave up on dieting, restriction, and everything else that was damaging my body and self-esteem."
Since then, Lawrence has worked hard to become comfortable in her skin. One of the most valuable lessons she's learned is that she's worth so much more than what she sees in the mirror. "I've never felt more beautiful or sexy just being the real me, and knowing that I'm loved because I'm me not some fantasy or perfected illusion," she continued to share in her post. "That my value wasn't based on a set of measurements, a number on the scale or the size I wear."

Today, her goal is to continue sharing that inspiring message with women to encourage them to love their bodies as they are and to have more open and honest conversations about disordered eating and self-image. "I'm grateful I'm here to tell my story when there are too many lives being lost from this mental illness. I hope that someday you share your story because we need more representation when we talk about eating disorder recovery. I've Never Had a Healthy Relationship With Food—and I'm Actually Okay With That

Never have I ever done anything in moderation.
As I write this, I am on my fourth cup of coffee, and I have no immediate plans to slow down. Meanwhile, I am over halfway through a pack of gum I just opened this morning, and will likely have chewed the last piece before I leave work tonight. Knowing this, I considered bringing in only a few pieces of gum and leaving the rest of the pack at home. But I would rather have no gum than only some gum. I have to have all the gum or no gum at all.
While this instinctive, black and white mentality applies to just about every aspect of my life—from caffeine and gum to work and romance—my first and last all-or-nothing relationship has always been with food. Since my chubby childhood, I have worshipped at the altar of thinness and became a practitioner of binge eating. I am trapped in the ultimate Kate Moss paradox: I think everything tastes as good as skinny feels, and I think skinny feels really, really good.

As a result, my eating habits have long fluctuated between overindulgence and restriction, occasionally punctuated by purging behaviors and arguably excessive exercise. Do I have an eating disorder?
While I’ve never sought out an official diagnosis, it’s unlikely I would be given one. Recent revisions to the DSM-V’s diagnostic criteria have made it easier for struggling individuals to receive an eating disorder diagnosis, but even my most intense episodes of restriction and purging have seldom been significant enough to qualify.
Pressed for a label, I would say that I don’t have an eating disorder, but I am a disordered eater—a phrase I’ve borrowed from writer Melissa Broder, whose work has often explored the notion of disordered eating as distinct from eating disorders. Like Broder, I have found that the term disordered eating seems to work for me.
It’s not hard for me to resist food altogether. It is extremely difficult, however, for me to stop eating once I’ve started. I don’t want to eat in moderation because the anguish of having some and wanting more isn’t worth it to me. If I’m going to eat, I want it to feel unlimited. But if I am going to indulge, I also have to compensate.
What does this compensation look like? Typically, it shakes out to fasting during the week. I allow myself unlimited coffee, gum, and light grazing of whatever free food happens to come my way—so I can save up for unlimited social eating and drinking on the weekend. Today, I will probably have a fifth coffee before I leave work and head to the gym, where I’ll do two to three hours of cardio and then grab a handful of the free Tootsie Rolls they keep at the front desk on my way out.

I acknowledge that my system has its flaws. But after years of grappling with feelings of shame and guilt about my body and eating habits, I have finally struck a balance. Somewhere between dieting and a diagnosable eating disorder, I have found my safe space. I will never be a normal eater, but I have found a way to accommodate my need for indulgence while maintaining a weight with which I am generally happy. If that method sometimes involves subsisting entirely on gum and Diet Coke for a few days at a time, that feels like a fair compromise to me.
I remain unapologetic about my disordered eating because it works for me. Also, I believe the shame I once felt over these behaviors was no less harmful and no more deserved than the shame my chubby childhood body used to bring me. That said, I don't recommend this behavior. When friends struggling to lose weight ask me for advice, I still balk at the idea of suggesting, “Hey, have you thought about just not eating for a while?” For all the faith I have in my system, I can’t be certain that it’s not harming me, and I definitely can’t be sure it wouldn’t harm someone else.
The only thing I have learned for certain throughout my lifelong quest to marry my love for food and my love for being thin is that diet and fitness are intensely individual. Potential health risks aside, I can’t promise my system would even be effective for someone else. Ultimately, my suggestions may be as unhelpful for others as “everything in moderation” is for me.
In our current body-positive era, I recognize that much of what I've written here could be considered problematic. I’m not supposed to tell you that I feel better at 110 pounds than I do at 140. I’m not even supposed to admit it to myself. But maybe body positivity is about more than blindly accepting the imperfections in your body. Maybe it is enough to accept the imperfections in your relationship to that body.
Existing in my body is the hardest thing I have ever done, and I have to do it every day for the rest of my life. Existing in my body when it's between a size zero and two is a little easier for me. Disordered eating allows me to do that, at what I’ve calculated to be a reasonable cost. It’s the closest I’ll ever come to having my cake and staying skinny, too.
I will never be the poster girl for body positivity. I will never love my body unconditionally. But after many years at war, my body and I have found a way to coexist.
