It is very hard to control what goes on Social Media in Times of Tragedy because it can be live or not live form of communication.  Many companies has video tapes that can show instant harm being done to people; for example if you are hold up at a bank and caught in the middle of a robbery being done, it can be live if it is being taped by a cell phone and instantly sent to the internet for display. 

Many gas stations have video camera inside the store and outside the store to protect the customers.  A good example is when a crook kidnap a nursing student Brittany Diggs in Alabama was held up at gunpoint and kidnapped; he took her car and put her in the trunk of her own car while he went to an ATM machine in a gas station to get money from her bank account.  The man could not remember the pin number, therefore, he went back and forth to the car several times speaking out loud to himself, who made the store Clerk to pay special attention to him because he did not see anyone in the car but himself.  The store Clerk thought that was very odd for him to be talking to an empty car.  After the crook came in the store and attempted to use the ATM machine which kept telling him the pin was not valid, the man decided to pull off from the gas station.  It was critical and quick thinking that the nursing student had an insulin pin with her which can also be sued to provide light.  She opened the car trunk latch while he was in the store and waited until he returned to the car and begin to back out from in front of the store, then, she made her escape by releasing the trunk latch and jump to the ground by rolling out on her back and ran into the store for help.  As the car speed off the nursing student told the store Clerk that she is kidnapped by a man and she does not know him, please call the police and provide her safe shelter from the crook.  If she did not escape from the trunk of the car, he probably would have rape and kill her.

Negative branding examples: https://www.facebook.com/News8/posts/10155112041097552 In this article that a user attached to Facebook Brittany describes how the man demanded her to give him her money and then when she said he didn’t he threatened to kill her. Businesses and people have to be careful of posting stories like this because incidents like this can be very controversial and spark a social media war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSUkgnT4WQc In this YouTube video Brittany describes her experience that she went through while trying to escape when being kidnapped. YouTube has to be careful of the attracting the wrong audience because posting videos like these can be viewed by anyone and if the wrong person views that videos and gets offended by little things such as the way people that helped her handled the situation or if they see this as a breach of privacy then things can end up taking a turn for the worse.

Do’s:  1. Information was learned YouTube saying that your Insulin pump can be used as a flashlight; she used it to save her life by having a flash light on it to un-latch the trunk.   2. Remain calm and polite, while you are figuring out how to escape.

Don’ts list:  1. Do not post stuff that can make people debate on a serious issue because that can lead to them becoming angry.  2.  Do not post videos about certain incidents without taking into account the repercussions, privacy and possible derogatory feedback that people might display.

Klout Results

After linking my social media sites to Klout.com and waiting 48 hours for them to give me feedback, I can finally view the results. The results from Klout were a score of 16.28 and the site that contributed the most was YouTube.  That being said I believe the best chance for improvement for me would be to focus on using my other social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn more. By doing this I would be able to learn more about the other social media sites as well as advertise my business better.

Facebook Brand Survey

The brand profile on Facebook that I have decided to analyze was Nike. At the top of Nikes Facebook page they have their slogan embedded in the background so that it is the first thing people see whenever they go to the page. Then as I scrolled down the page I saw that they used plenty of advertisements, many of which are well known athlete's and celebrities. I also found it interesting and cool that they put the word equality in many of their advertisements that they used on their page. It's interesting because this is their company page for one of the biggest social media sites on the internet and they repeatedly used a word that is a very big issue in the society that we live in today. Their brand fans seem really interested in the advertisements that they post because on every post there is more than 500 comments on it. My only suggestion for improvement would be that they could advertise their products more blatantly, but other than that I think they have a really good Facebook page. I like the way Nike put many of their videos in black and white. This is because it symbolizes and shows their consumers that their company has an extremely strong and unique stance on equality, whether it be in sports or humanity.

I have completed the university of Maryland study which involves abstaining from all social media for 24 hours. During the experiment I avoided all of my electronics which includes my cell phone, computers, television, and etc. Today has been really different without the use of technology. I resorted to reading some books to pass the time and I had no idea of what was going on in the world around me. I’m sure that if I wanted to really find out that information, I could have just brought a newspaper and found out. Being technology deprived also made the day seem like it was going by a lot slower than an average day using technology would. In all it was a pretty interesting experiment that forced me to use other sources to get through the day. It let me know that sometimes when you don’t have technology, you still have to find other alternatives to complete the daily tasks and find out the daily information that you are used to doing everyday.
