Hello. This is Yang Hyun Suk. 

I don’t remember exactly but I think it was 2001? FROM YG was the first avenue I used in trying to communicate with fans as a music producer. That’s already 18 years ago. The intention was to help address the curiosity of fans and to let fans know about the current progress/status [of various projects]. However, it caused fans a lot of disappointment whenever certain plans were delayed or canceled, so FROM YG was stopped for the past 4 years and revisited last year. 

The reason I am telling you this from the beginning is to convey that just like you, I am a person so I can be a bit greedy when it comes to New Year’s plans and goals; and because this work is a process involving many variables, I would like to ask you to consider FROM YG like whispered information to a close friend rather than promises to be fulfilled. 

Please provide more details about ‘YG Treasure Box’. You picked 7 trainees as ‘Treasure’ and announced 6 additional trainees. What is the selection criteria and their time of debut? 

Among all the survival programs that YG has conducted (Big Bang, Winner, IKON, etc.), ‘YG Treasure Box’ involved the greatest number of trainees, 28. The most regretful part of ‘YG Treasure Box’ was that I could see the potential of the trainees in front of my eyes and yet I could not let all of them “aboard the small boat”. Therefore, I used the method of “getting ahold of an additional boat” to select 13 final members. 

The reason YG has traditionally directed its own survival program is because as a producer, the only time I am able to meet with the trainees is once a month during the end of the month evaluations. However, these evaluations are also based on singing and dancing skills so there are definitely limitations for me to grasp the individual character, strengths, and charm of the trainees. I felt it was necessary to have the opportunity to look at the trainees with the same gaze as fans. Because these friends will be with YG for more than 10 years.

I believe that a well-prepared meal involves reducing repetitive side dishes and combining foods that are compatible with one another. Similar to how 11 strikers do not take part in a soccer game, the selection criteria for ‘YG Treasure Box’ was to find members appropriate for each position and to achieve balance and harmony as a team.

Is the plan to debut both teams this year?  

This may be a bit shocking to fans, but the first combination I want is 13 members. More specifically, I would like to first debut the 13 members as one team with the name ‘Treasure 13’. 

The reason the trainees were not selected as Treasure 13 to begin with and rather divided into two teams is because of YG’s experience with IKON which consists of 7 members. A team consisting of more than 7 members has obvious shortcomings and limitations i.e. the members have very few parts and small roles (“little weight”). 

Therefore, the plan is for the members to be active as 2 divided teams in addition to their group activities as Treasure 13 to grow the individual capacity of the members. The 7 members who were selected first gets the benefit of gaining the name ‘Treasure’. Although they started off with two boats/ships, their destination will be the same. 

What is the team name for the additional 6 members? 

It is ‘Magnum’. BlackPink previously mentioned on the air that it was a candidate for their team name, and it is a name that fans already predicted due to YG trademarking it. 

The reason and meaning of the team name ‘Magnum’ is.. People often use the phrases ‘drunk on music’, ‘drunk on alcohol’, and ‘getting in the mood/vibe’. Magnum is the name of the double size 1.5L bottle used for wine, which is appraised to be the highest quality form of alcohol. Magnum was chosen as the team name with the hope that the whole world will ‘get drunk on their music’. 

Magnum has also been used in the name of some firearms. We thought that it fit a boy group better than a girl group so we have been saving the name.

What are the plans for Treasure 13’s debut?

Treasure 13’s first debut is predicted to be May-July of this year. We plan to rapidly grow Treasure 13 through aggressive and continuous song releases. After the successful debut of Treasure 13, we expect divided activities for ‘Treasure’ and ‘Magnum’. 

Do you have promotion plans prior to debut?

During ‘YG Treasure Box’, the phrase most frequently used by Announcer Jang Sung Kyu was “open the treasure box~”. We are preparing to use that as the program title to air content such as the debut preparation process and fun clips of the members’ daily life.

Similar to ‘YG Treasure Box’, we are thinking to utilize v-live and YouTube to facilitate access of global fans. We plan to take advantage of additional platforms as well.

Has the fan club name of Treasure 13 been decided?

We expect to create one fan club name for the three teams. We thought that the name ‘Treasure Maker’ was most appropriate since it was used during ‘YG Treasure Box’ and the growth and success of Treasure 13 is a joint effort with fans. 

What will be different about Treasure 13 compared to senior groups and/or what is the team’s unique strategy?

In terms of the timeline, Big Bang is YG’s first generation boy group, Winner and IKON is the second generation, and Treasure 13 could be considered the third generation. A similarity among the senior groups is that the members participate in the lyrics and composition of all their songs and are considered ‘artist-type idols’ or ‘self-produced idols’.

In this case, we do not plan on encouraging the Treasure 13 members to participate in songwriting. Instead, we plan to actively utilise YG’s production capabilities.

Of course, it is a great advantage to have artists participate in song writing, but it also has the disadvantage of creating long gaps from the stage when the members lack time due to busy schedules or if songs do not come out well.

Similar to how BlackPink’s songs involve Teddy in charge as the main producer and the participation of the Black Label’s producers, the music for Treasure 13 will involve the mobilization of YG, the Black Label, and the recently established YGX, including 30 full-time music producers in order to construct a speedy form of operation. I hope for your interest and support in the successful debut and growth of Treasure 13.
