Section 215 of US Patriot Act Set to Expire: What Will it Mean for Privacy
With section 215 of the US Patriot Act lapsing in June, much of the private data collected on citizens and corporations will come to an end. That is what is supposed to happen anyways. The Patriot Act has however continued its stay several times since its inception in 2001.
The Act as it sits now has enabled the government to collect not only phone records but also the metadata. Metadata is data that describes other data. For instance, when information is collected about who you call, who calls you, what transactions you made, where you go, etc., is compiled together, it paints a bigger picture of who you are as an individual. All this information by itself is just information. All this information compiled together is metadata and can tell a lot more private information about a person.
These are the concerns of many interest groups and government officials as section 215 of the Patriot Act (the section that allows metadata collection) is set to expire. Many are concerned if it really will come to an end and if it doesn’t come to end then what can be done to limit the amount of information the government tracks on each of its citizens. A coalition comprised of activist groups, technology leaders and others dedicated to privacy interests have reached out to Congress to provide for better safeguards when the Act is set to run out.
The coalition seeks to not only enact safeguards to the collection of the data itself but also to include transparency and accountability for what information is collected as well as what information shouldn’t have been collected but has been. The coalition seeks to impose these regulations on both the government as well as the companies being forced to submit their users’ private information to the government. An important step to the reform will be cooperation from companies who are willing to get on board with restrictions in handing over its consumer data. Some of the biggest technology companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook are already on board with reform which will lead the way for others to follow suit.
It is unknown what will happen to the Act in June and whether or not additional precautions will be put into place. There are still ways to safeguard your private information and protect your rights.
