“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
In this world of never-ending development of technology, everyone is fond of using gadgets and other forms of technology as a main source of information- especially this generation. Today, we live in a convenient world where everyone only needs a simple device to access media and gather information, using one click of a button. Yes, it is so easy even a baby can do it. Almost everyone in the globe is using this as a way to connect with friends or loved ones. Living today where everything can be accessible and easy is very convenient. However, somewhere in the corner, illiterate users, hackers, and scammers are arising. Information literacy is one of the essential skills that we should have to avoid the horrible things that I mentioned earlier.
Tumblr media
Connecting and accessing almost everything can take you everywhere in just a tap. Information can spread throughout the internet where we can find almost anything that we want. With this, we can evaluate and critique information before we can use, share or gather for our needs. Yes, information might be abundant but are you sure they are valid? Being information literate will help you. Information literacy can help our virtual world become a better place because we can help to fight off false information, hackers, and scammers. Lastly, we can help and advocate for other users to share and spread the word on how information literacy is important and relevant in this era.

The Good and the Bad: How Social Media Affected Me as a Gen Z Individual
Social media has been widely used as a source of information and a medium for communication in today’s generation and it is capable of connecting billions of people worldwide in a single click of a button. Social media has been used for entertainment, news, business, and many more. No wonder why people are fond of using social media! They can use this for being updated every day and for promoting their products. Yes, social media is very beneficial nowadays but it is also dangerous. False information and scams are rampant today because users have the control to post anything in their hands.
Tumblr media
As a Gen Z individual, social media helped me to properly analyze and criticize an information or an opinion and helped me to become a better and literate user of social media. Social media helped me to become extra careful when it comes to dealing with invalid information that is spread throughout the internet and the social media itself. It helped me to be open-minded to each and every other user’s opinion that can be read throughout social media. Social media helped me to be connected to my family members or relatives that are in other countries or in other parts of the country. Moreover, by staying updated anytime and anywhere in a click of a button, I can get the information that I need which I can use in my daily life (like weather forecast and newly approved local advisories). However, there is something that lurks in the darkness, which is the bad effect. Yes, social media helped me in many ways but together with that, it also gave me bad habits and bad health. Social media is very good when it comes to entertaining its users yet too much of it can make us addicted. Therefore, we tend to slowly forget the tasks that we need to do (like assignments and projects) which causes procrastination. Too much screen time on gadgets to access social media can also deteriorate our eyesight because it uses blue light that can permanently destroy your vision. Let us be all aware that social media is very useful in dealing with this digital generation. However, let us not get devoured by social media and let us maintain proper balance between the digital and physical world.

“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual”
Tumblr media
Technology improves every year, from keypad phones to high-tech smartphones and from desktops to handheld computers. Such technological improvements lead to the development of internet and the rise of social media. The youth of today’s generation are fond of using gadgets which they use in connecting to social media and access information from the internet. Moreover, because it is not complicated to use, almost everyone (even a young children) is using it.  Due to its convenience, most individuals today rely on both the internet and social media in accessing a variety of information. In fact, billions of people depend on these platforms stay updated for the latest news. However, both platforms have a common downside – they also contain false and misleading information. Thousands of people get victimized of fake news everyday, especially during the rise of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). On the good note, becoming one of its victims can be avoided.
Being a media and information literate individual means that we are able to process and evaluate online information with a careful judgement before believing and sharing it. By such, we are able to avoid being a victim of false and misleading information. Other than that, we are also able to reduce the spread of fake information on social media and the internet. Additionally, we become responsible social media and internet users. It helps us to become mindful of what we share and publish to the public. It develops our sense of awareness on every information that we use and take. As a consequence of reducing the spread of false information, we are able to create a healthy virtual environment (especially that not everyone of us are able to take Media and Information Literacy).
