The New Reality or Fiction: Contemporary Photography
Tumblr media
Alterations are not allowed in press photography, but they are one of the tools used in contemporary art photography? Why?
In press photography alterations can change the context of an image entirely. By not editing press photos this allows the image to stay truthful and realistic. Contemporary art photography is telling a story on it’s own. The viewers use their imagination to perceive their own story behind the photograph. Altering such images let’s the creator allow the viewer to see the images in the eyes of the photographer and feel the emotions attached with the image. Art photography allows the photographer to be creative with their images and modify or alter them in any such ways that they wants. Through this they can ultimately shape the image to portray the message they want to their viewers. These are two different forms of photography that have different purposes which is why press photography has more rules it must follow while contemporary art photography has a more open range for creativity. For example:-

Compare photographs of Sommer, Adams and Klett versus Parkeharrison, Muniz and Crewdson.
Photographers Sommer, Adams and Klett focuses on the beauty of nature and without editing the photo. These three photographers maintains to produce unedited visuals that could be used for press photography. Their aesthetics are similar to each other’s works as they use a monochromatic technique, which are images produced in black, white and tones of grey,  in all of their photos. One of the photographers’ artwork was truly astonishing. Mark Klett took photographs of him and his daughter’s birth to her adulthood through the years with the same monochrome palette, same lighting and contrast as if it was taken in one day. In Adams’ work, he focuses on the American cultural  and natural landscape as well as the real American  suburban neighborhoods. In Sommer’s exhibition, he focuses on the redemptive and destructive side of nature. He features roadkills and carcasses that are slowly decaying as time passes. Sommer also shows us another side of his artwork where you can see human bodies in action, taken beautifully, creating mysticism and drama. What differs Sommer’s work from Klett and Adams is that, his work shows versatility and he does not stick with the same subject. Example of Adam’s work and Mark Klett:

Over the past few decades, with new technological advancements being made such as Colored photography, several photographers experimented with different mediums and  digital manipulations. Photographers Parkeharrison, Muniz and Crewdson specializes in contemporary and conceptual photography. Contemporary photography is a new direction of visual arts which presents a truly different perspective from Press photography. The use of photoshop, artistic sets, and edits was heavily used in contemporary photography. The idea of contemporary photographers brings the artists’ imaginations come to life. Crewdson uses a very emotional, mystic and strange-like feeling that somehow tells us a twisted story that is close to our reality. Meanwhile Parkeharrison shows us a substantial imaginative photographs and  macabre sentiments that gives the viewer chills while questioning the photographer’s idea “What in the world were they thinking when they made this?” and “ what does this picture entails?”. Contemporary photography is also used for other mediums and uses such as fashion and commercial photography.
Example of Parkeharrison’s contemporary work:

What happened to the photography? Is this its future? Will photography capture reality in the future or it will be only fictional?
Throughout the years, photographers have developed a wide range of tools that allow them to edit their photos however they please and to create a setting completely fabricated from their imagination. Included in these tools are the editing programs we utilize in today’s Digital Age that allow us to refine our photos and to reimagine the world we see, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Instagram. Since the invention of the camera was only introduced in the nineteenth century, and the type of photography technology that we are familiar with has only been around for less than twenty years, the limitations of photography remain largely undiscovered. While a handful of photographers continue to push the boundaries through their art and techniques, the majority have been playing it safe. It seems that only recently has there been an upsurge in the number of photographers willing to step away from realism and enter the world of contemporary and conceptual photography. As photographers grow more confident in their skills, the level of experimentation in artistic photography rises.
Let us take the world of fashion photography as an example. While realism continues to take over the magazines, ad campaigns and editorials, the number of abstract photographers and their work is growing. Realist fashion photographers such as Mert (Alas) and Marcus (Piggott), Inez (van Lamsweerde) and Vinoodh (Matadin) and Steven Meisel most likely will never stop finding work, but more abstract photographers like Tim Walker, Harley Weir and Willy Vanderperre are fast gaining attention and traction. Tim Walker is arguably one of today’s most important pioneers of contemporary photography. His famous works include an image of trees adorned with dress-shaped lanterns and has gained much attention and acclaim from photography and fashion fans alike, while Willy Vanderperre has steadily been shooting advertisements for prominent luxury brands like Prada, Calvin Klein and Raf Simons for years. Meanwhile, Harley Weir, a relatively young newcomer compared to the other two, has shot for brands like Balenciaga and Celine while consistently shooting for artistic, millennial-focused magazines like POP and Self Service which are quickly becoming fashion’s newest It magazines.

All this is to say that the art of photography appears to be leaning towards the contemporary and conceptual rather than realism, although very slowly. Abstract artwork is not made for the general masses, so realist photography will probably never die out, although it seems that for now contemporary photography -- photography that captures an artist’s vision rather than the artist capturing reality -- is becoming a new standard in photography.

For this photo manipulation assignment, I made changes for these two photos I have taken years ago on my backyard with a self timer. I made changes by manipulating the background and the atmosphere of the photos. For instance for the first photo I changed the place or the background and added fog effects to give that vintage romance look of the photo and also it made the outfit look more interesting. The united version was taken on my backyard. The original background did not really give that aesthetic I was looking for to fit the overall presentation of the outfit.
The second photo I edited was also taken on my backyard. I was inspired the by film how to kill a mocking bird. I was inspired with the black and white film and the literal title of the movie. For this purpose I changed the background of the photo to give more of that clean look. I also changed the colour to black and white and added birds flying around me.
I believe it will either confuse or misguide the audience by depending of the purpose of the photos. These photos will confuse many audiences if It were to be used in a news report but if it was to be used for art I don't think it will confuse the audience because the purpose of these edited photos were to show the aesthetic and theme of the outfit. Theses photos would not be ethical for news media to publish them because these photos are manipulated into something different. You can't tell a real story that has been manipulated.
The differences between art and press photography is that art photography is created accordance to the vision of the artist and as for the press photography is telling a true story for the audience to see or read. My photos are art photography because I wanted to show a vision for the audience to see.

Hello, I’m Mark and I am a second year fashion design student at George Brown College. This blog is primarily my photography hub where I share cool and interesting photos that I’ve taken and want to display to the world. I have neglected my camera for a bit so hopefully this blog will spark my creativity again.
