Taking Chances || Jeno AU
Genre: Angst/Fluff
Warnings: light swearing
Word Count: 1.9k
Part: one ||
â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘
The sound of your light laughter filled the already loud hallway as you stood at you locker. Your closest friend, Renjun just told you a joke that was so badâit was good. Renjun beamed at your reaction to his lame joke, even though you laughed at all his jokes like that. Thatâs one of the reasons why he was your best friend, your humor just worked together. Right as your laughter finally died down and you opened your mouth to respond, Renjun said, âY/N! Turn around, itâs your guy~~!â
You glanced over your shoulder, knowing exactly who he was talking about. Lee Jeno. The guy youâve had a crush on since freshman year. You were in senior year now, and your crush wasnât even close to dying down. Everything about him was just perfect. Like when he smiles and his eyes turn into crescents, and his happiness light up the whole room. Or how he treats everybody with kindness, despite being in a position where he doesnât have to. (That meaning, popular, of course) Adding onto that, the fact that he was so passionate about everything he loved. You fell for him hard.
Yet, he didnât even know who you were. To be fair, yes, it was a substantially larger school than most others; however, it didnât stop you from sometimes getting a bit sulky. On the other hand, you were worried that if he did know who you were, he wouldnât like you. Due to your intense love for incredibly nerdy things, your obsession with books and grades, and your liking for âunpopularâ things.
Not to mention the bad-luck thing. Everyone that knew you, knew that youâfor some odd reasonâhad this awful luck always surrounding you. Yes, you got good grades and have an amazing best friend, but there are things that happen that cannot be explained very logically.
To be frank, you werenât exactly a package deal. You were more like the ribbon on the side of a gift that people usually forget to put on.
You turned back to Renjun after staring at the perfection that was Jeno, for far too long. He gave you a knowing look and was trying to stifle laughter under his breath. Your lips quirked into an embarrassed smile and you playfully smacked his arm.
âDonât laugh at me!â You exclaimed with a giggle. He raised his hands in surrender as his laughter finally escaped from his lips. You rolled your eyes at him and finally opened your locker. You pulled out your books for your first period and put them in your bag, âReady?â Renjun asked once you had grabbed them all. You nodded swiftly and you two set off to start the day.
~~~
Your first three periods went past quickly. Especially because they were all classes you enjoyed. Now was lunch, everyoneâs favorite time of the day. You met Renjun right outside the doors of the cafeteria and walked in side by side. Everyone that knows you two, knows that you sit together in the same spot everyday. It was pretty funny actually, as literally no one else ever say there except you two.
You flopped into the usual uncomfortable seat and placed your bag on the table. You pulled out a book, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, by Mary Shelley. It was truly a very interesting book that you found yourself strangely immersed into. It was a lovely novel, and will most likely continue to thrive as a classic in the world of literature. You glanced up at Renjun, who pulled out his sketch book and a pencil. He was an amazing artist, and watching him draw was a habit and hobby of yours. He was just so fluent in his hand movements and you had always admired his focus. He glanced up and met your eyes, giving you a funny smile.
âBy the way! I wonât be able to go to the library, with you, after school for the next few weeks. Iâm going to have a lot of projects going on in art class that I need to be in full focus while I make them.â He explained to you.
You nodded and responded, âThatâs fine! Good luck with those, by the way; I know how much they stress you out.â He smiled gratefully and gave you a look that said âthank you for understandingâ. That was also something that you and Renjun did, talk without actually talking. Sometimes looks and actions are plenty for the two of you.
Next thing you knew, the end of the day came around and you found yourself at your locker with Renjun beside you. You put away all the book you didnât need in exchange for the ones you did, and slipped them into your book bag. You also made sure to grab all your library books, which made the bag substantially heavierâyou didnât mind. You slid it onto your shoulders and began walking to the library. The library was always open later than the school, due to it being its own building before our school bought it. Renjun walked you, like he usually did. Even when he doesnât end up going in with you, he always walked you. He would walk you everywhere if he could. He sees you as a sister, and sees walking you places as a way to protect you from things. Potential kidnappers, rapists, killers, muggers, or sometimes even yourself. Well⌠mostly yourself. You really did have serious bad luck.
Like the amount of times Renjun has had to pull you out of the way of a car about to hit you, is way higher then it should be. You sighed as you reached the entrance to the library; you turned to Renjun with a smile and bid him a safe farewell as he left the school. You turned on one heel after seeing him off, and stepped into the library. You greeted the librarian, who has come to know you very well, with a warm smile.
âHello, Mrs. Jeong!â You greeted quietly, walking up to her desk. You set down your bag on the floor beside it and knelt down. You unzipped the bag and began taking the books you needed to be checked in, out.
She smiled and replied, âHello sweetie, how was your day?â She grabbed the books as you set them on the desk and scanned them onto her computer, so she could check them in.
âMy day was lovely,â you said, âand there were no unlucky mishaps today.â
Mrs. Jeong chuckled at the last part and finished checking in the final book, that you had for her to check in. Finally you pulled out the book you were reading at lunch today and asked her to renew it. As she did, she lowered her voice a substantial amount and said, âHow are your parents doing?â
Your smile faltered momentarily, but you forced it back on. Mrs. Jeong acted as more of a mother figure to you than your actual mother. You confided in her a lot and she always listened and tried to help as much as she could. Which included all of your family issues.
âTheyâre doing better.â
Not exactly a lie. But definitely not the truth either. She gave you a knowing look and a small smile to accompany it. Then after a bit more small talkâmost likely to get your mind off your parentsâyou finally got around to looking for more books to check out. You walked down the isles curiously and looked for something new. You decided to grab The Great Tree of Avalon, Stoner, and No Longer Human. You checked them out swiftly and went to the back of the library where you could sit at an empty table and do your work. You pulled out your homework, and set your books to the side.
Several minutes later, you heard the door of the library open, but you chose to ignore it. You just remained seated and focused on your work. Most of it was already done, since you finished a lot in class, but you still didnât want the stress of procrastination to hit you. Meanwhile, Jenoâsomeone who has never once stepped into the schools libraryâstepped in and looked around in slight admiration. He decided it would be a good idea to skip the partying and unnecessary plans to focus on school more. Of course, he told his friends it was because he had something else coming up these next few weeks. If they actually knew that he was trying to take his studies seriously, he would get incessant teasing from them. He walked around the library in a haze, not knowing what exactly to look for in a book. After a while, he gave up on searching and instead just settled for sitting at a table to start his homework. He found two near the back.
One of them was empty and the other sat someone he couldnât quite identify. He opted to sit at the empty table, flopping less than gracefully into the chair and pulling out his books. They were scattered across the table in a uneven heap and he sighed at it in distress. Yes, he wanted to take his work more seriously; it did not mean he liked it. He began on his easiest work. It was the work for his elective class, music. His friends all took different things than music, and gave him some shit for choosing it. They thought it was, âlame as fuckâ and âfor the fucking losersâ.
Jeno quite enjoyed it. He had always loved music, and had a deep appreciation for it. None of his friends thought that was a good thing, so he learned to keep his mouth shut about those kinds of interests a long time ago. A small smile grew onto his face as he slipped earbuds into his ears. He listened to music while he worked, to help prevent stress. Right when he put them in though, he yanked them right out. He looked up at the same time you did. Although you werenât looking in his exact direction, he got a good look at your face. Everything about you immediately captivated him and he felt oddly drawn to you. Everything from your hair, to your eyes, to your soft features made him stare in awe. He racked his brain for any time that he had ever seen you before but couldnât recall any at all. He bit his lip as he looked at you.
You smiled brightly as you finally finished the homework you had and put it away. You eagerly reached out and grabbed the top book on your stack. When you reached for it your eyes drifted upwards until they met with someone elses. You almost gasped when you realized it was none other then Lee Jeno. He was staring directly back at you, before you suddenly glanced away. Your cheeks were flushed a crimson red and you swallowed hard. You opened the book quickly and lifted it so it covered your face.
Jeno, himself, looked down at his phone and pretended he was doing something else on it. He was confused, he had never been so nervous with girls before. He didnât even know your name but you somehow had a hold on him that others didnât.
Little did you know that was just the beginning.
