Project Title: Ka'in Lang Nang Ka'in, Koopa!

DISCUSSION:

In 2025 I returned to Instagram to observe both what former acquaintances and the general population of accounts were doing and saying. During my observation, I took interest in and was inspired by the meme culture, some of which seemed to be either a holdover or imitation of the meme culture from 2017 etc. I took particular interest in the non-English content, partially because studying such content is how I brush up on my knowledge of languages.

After this experience, and out of a bit of boredom! I decided to make a concept meme microculture of my own in my native Tagalog, which I've been informed is a distinct Manileño dialect! Using some images of my deceased dog, Koopa, from 2015 I got to work and immediately posted them to my small ghost account.

A Sampling of my Old Sketches, with a New Introduction and Notes

The visual arts: merely a fragment of what we in academia like to call The Humanities.

In college, I was introduced to the concept of "African Portraiture," wherein the subject isn't drawn with a visual likeness in mind, but with symbols etc.

During college, I went to Greece over a summer to study poetry as well, but I incorporated my love of drawing into my studies. My subject was Medusa: a being so hideous that one look at her face was said to be able to freeze men. Instead of the usual sultry, voluptuous femme fatale, I indeed drew a face that I thought was both shocking and hideous, to the pleasure of some!

However, I did get into a bit of a heated discussion with one of the staff re: whether or not some groups in the past NEEDED to be able to depict things "realistically" at all! I questioned whether they had the capabilities, of course, and to this day I admire this teacher's passion re: this subject as nowadays I know that this discussion is very relevant to Anarchocommunism! I'd like to clarify, of course, that I was only 17 at the time of this exchange, so I hope fellow Anarchocommunists will be merciful in their judgements of my past self lmao!

DISCUSSION: Though many of these, esp in the beginning, were drawn from life, later on I took to practicing with photos to keep working on my finesse. The last sketch was drawn while I was in a psyche ward here in Providence: a situation that requires one to draw under time constraints and other stressors! I believe my self-training helped in making that portrait possible.

Question 1: "How did you choose your subjects?"

Well they're mostly folk I know irl who agreed to it. If you notice, I chose to draw some of the earlier ones while they were reading or studying so that they'd be relatively still anyway lmao! Later on the situations were more varied, and sometimes what I chose to draw depended on what I wanted to practice.
