was raised in a detroit suburb. though raised would be a generous categorization. neither of the mccarthy parents were around much. often distracted by their own lives to pay any attention to the twins. instead they showed their support financially

it's often joked the twins were in cheer before they could walk. it was mason's entire identity through high school, and while he did go on to cheer at the collegiate level it was no longer his entire identity. just most of it.

was determined to be seen as heterosexual while in high school. not because he was ashamed of his sexuality but thought that being known as queer would only buy into people's preconceived notions of male cheerleaders.

graduated from the university of michigan with a bfa in musical theater and forever credits that decision to bring it on: the musical, the best of the bring it on universe outside of the original film in his eyes. he still considers it his life's goal to see the show brought back to broadway.

moved to new york because where else do you go when you have a bfa? thanks to some interning connections he was able to land a real career shortly after moving to the city and really put that bfa on the back burner
