Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 27 - Reborn Fevor
Instead of asking about the pin, he jumps to his feet and hurries out of the room. Shen Qingqiu is barely able to follow as he stumbles to his feet. Leaving the broom closet, he finds Binghe in front of the painting once again. But instead of looking at the darkened face, Binghe is standing very close to the frame. Looking it over carefully, using the pin in his hand to compare, he finds what he is looking for.
First Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
The laboratory, like most places in this mansion, is not somewhere that Shen Qingqiu remembers fondly. Suffocating slowly while his body broke down piece by piece is not an experience he wishes to repeat. Becoming blind, deaf and lame, his only piece of comfort was the unknown person who sat with him through his death.
Shen Qingqiu knows he will never find out who that person is. He is grateful to them all the same.
With that being said, when he woke up afterwards, he promised himself to be extra cautious the next time he attempted to solve the puzzle in the laboratory. And how much more cautious can he be than having someone else solve the puzzle for him?
Shen Qingqiu is quick to lead Luo Binghe through the hallways. Once they reach their destination, he does hesitate briefly. Looking back, he eyes the fake fake door, the hidden entrance to the shortcut. For just a moment, he thinks they should just try that route again, get the parchment and hope not to fall into the same trap again.
Before he can even open his mouth to suggest that, Luo Binghe has already entered the laboratory.
Having no other choice but to follow, Shen Qingqiu finds Luo Binghe looking over the hundreds of bottles stacked all over the place. He moves around the room slowly, inspecting every item carefully. None of the chemicals are relevant for their current goals, so Shen Qingqiu goes over to pull the curtain to the side.
Everything stands exactly the same as the last time Shen Qingqiu was here. The four posts, the table with the 'antidote' and most noticeable of all, the portrait of the man, face shrouded in darkness.
Of course, none of this comes as a surprise to Shen Qingqiu. There is no reason any object or item should be out of place. Especially this early in the session where no one else has had a chance to interact with the room yet. Still, Shen Qingqiu allows Binghe to take it all in as he steps over slowly.
It is not weird in the slightest how Binghe seems curious about the painting at first. He walks over to study it closely, not just the painting itself, but even the heavily decorated frame around it. Once he has had his fill, he turns towards the posts, looking them over like Shen Qingqiu did when he first found the room.
"Be careful!" Shen Qingqiu warns, somehow worried that Binghe will accidentally trigger the trap. Logically, he knows that Binghe making a mistake like that is impossible. But an irrational part of him can’t help but keep a sharp eye on him.
Luo Binghe quickly moves his hands away from the posts at the warning, even taking a step back. He doesn't look over at Shen Qingqiu, though, instead taking in the formation of the posts. Luo Binghe is of course smart enough to quickly put two and two together and figure out how the old parchment and these posts relate. Still, Shen Qingqiu can't help but explain.
"You have to turn them around in the same directions as you saw on the page. Once they are turned correctly, you press down on the disc. It's important that you do it exactly like the note, otherwise you will trigger the trap. Do you understand? There can be no doubt in your mind when you do this."
"I understand Senior. But I am confident I know how to do this," Luo Binghe answers and true to his words, he sounds certain.
Really, there is nothing for Shen Qingqiu to be worried about. He has already assured himself that the mansion won't kill Binghe. And if Binghe says he remembers the directions on that old piece of parchment, there is no reason why Shen Qingqiu shouldn't believe him. Really, he should just lean back and enjoy a puzzle being easily solved for once.
Luo Binghe takes a moment to survey the posts, his expression focused as he compares their position with what he remembers from the parchment. Once he moves to the first post, it easily turns with a series of low clicks. He takes his time to go from post to post, double checking and triple checking each peak is turned the right way before he moves on to the next.
Once he has turned the beaks of all four posts, he once again steps back. Takes a good look at his work. He does not hurry as he compares them mentally with the note, making certain they match perfectly.
Shen Qingqiu looks on with a weird feeling in his stomach. He knows that Binghe is just acting cautious because of his warning and that is why he is taking his time. While he moves around carefully, there is no hesitation in his movement or apprehension when he touches the posts. Even when Binghe rechecks his work, there is a part of Shen Qingqiu that feels as if he is only doing so to reassure him. That if Shen Qingqiu wasn't here, Binghe would just have set the posts at once and then solved the puzzle. That it is for Shen Qingqiu’s sake that he is making sure there are no room for doubts.
Really, there is nothing but confidence in Luo Binghe's steps as he walks to the closest post, reaching out with his hand towards it's disc, ready to press on it and finish this puzzle-
"Wait!" Shen Qingqiu exclaims and Luo Binghe freezes.
Hand hovering right above the disc, Luo Binghe only needs to do the lightest of a touch to complete the puzzle. At the slightest disregard for Shen Qingqiu's command, he could easily end his work. But hearing his Seniors' sudden alarm, he does not move an inch.
Neither does Shen Qingqiu. Despite his outburst, he does not know what he wants Luo Binghe to wait for. He doesn't know what he himself is thinking and he doesn't know what more he wants to say. There is no reason to stop this. Even if Luo Binghe somehow gets the puzzle wrong, his life is not in danger. Even if he gets hurt, Shen Qingqiu can just go on on his own. He doesn't even need to abandon Luo Binghe, just search the nearby rooms for supplies he can bring back.
There is no reason at all for why they shouldn't do this.
"Senior...?" Luo Binghe hesitantly calls out when the silence persists.
Shen Qingqiu does not answer immediately. But when he does, he speaks slowly, as if confirming the words as he says them.
"I think... we should not finish this puzzle yet..."
"...Why? This is the last step, why would we stop now?" Luo Binghe can't help but question.
"There is no reason to hurry. We know where we can find the solution, so why do we need to risk it?"
"Senior..." Luo Binghe starts. He looks at Shen Qingqiu with a frown, like he is trying to read something between his words. For a second, Shen Qingqiu fears he will still press down on the disc. To his relief, Luo Binghe leaves it, stepping towards Shen Qingqiu instead.
"Do you not believe I remember the correct answer?" He asks once he stands right in front of him.
Shen Qingqiu shakes his head. "It's not that. I believe Binghe when he says that he remembers."
"Then is it that you do not trust me? You think I would get it wrong even if I am certain that I remember?!"
Frustration clear on the other man, Shen Qingqiu can't help but give an indulgent smile. Without thinking about it, he reaches up a hand to pat the other on the head.
"It's not that I don't trust Binghe. And it is not that I don't believe you. I just think it is better for us to play it safe." A pout is forming on Binghe's face. Still, he does not move away from Shen Qingqiu's hand. Laughing inwardly, Shen Qingqiu decides to explain more. "The thing is, once we solve the puzzle, the item we will get won't actually be useful for a bit. While it would be nice to check it out now, there are still other challenges we have to clear before we can finish this. An opportunity might open up for us later to get the note, so there is no reason for us to risk Binghe like this."
The pout does not go away. Binghe grumbles for a minute, visibly unhappy with what Shen Qingqiu is saying. But somehow, as the hand keeps petting his hair, he quiets down. After a minute, he finally gives a slight nod.
As Shen Qingqiu looks upon his junior, he finds the other man looking soft, even softer than when he was checking him over for injuries earlier. In actuality, it feels similar to their first loop together. Right after they escaped the Killer for the first time and were resting in the shed.
Back then, Binghe had been mad at Shen Qingqiu for not abandoning him. But after a few words, he had magically turned docile and obedient. He had been kneeling, face turned slightly away while still looking right at Shen Qingqiu. And now, standing taller than him, Binghe somehow has the same expression, keeping his eyes on his Senior, but head still bowed bashfully.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't know how the situation back then is any similar to now. But he does know that seeing Binghe like this somehow feels like he is facing the man's most honest self. That while Binghe might always keep a mask at hand to use for when he needs a particular situation to go his way, like this there are no lies. That this grumpy but obedient little junior of his is truly who Luo Binghe is.
Something in Shen Qingqiu's heart swells at this thought, but before he can dwell on it further, they are interrupted.
A well known static sounds from Binghe's pocket. Quickly, he pulls the spiritbox out to turn it off while Shen Qingqiu is already on the move.
Grasping Binghe's hand, he pulls them into the broom closet. The key is in the door as expected and Shen Qingqiu does not hesitate to turn it, locking them inside.
Standing completely still, they both listen out for any danger. The Killer has never been particularly discreet with how he moves around, so there should be no doubt when he enters the laboratory. So they wait with bated breaths. Wait for the Killer to come inside. Wait for the stomp of his heavy booths. Wait for the scrape of his heavy axe.
They wait and keep on waiting. As the wait continues, Shen Qingqiu’s eyes wander around the broom closet. He is suddenly hit with a sudden sense of deja-vu.
It has been many sessions ago, but once he also hid in here with Ning Yingying. Though the Killer was much nearer back then. Similarly, Binghe now stands beside the metal cabinet, though his hands are nowhere near it. Instead they are pressed back against the wall.
Shen Qingqiu still can't help but feel apprehensive at the sight. Since the Killer has yet to step into the laboratory, he dares to pull Binghe away from the cabinet and closer to him. Neither makes a sound at the movement, but in the small space, there is no place for Binghe to be. He can only stand right in front of Shen Qingqiu, pressing his palms against the wall on either side of him.
Like this they are almost chest to chest. Binghe being taller than Shen Qingqiu means he has to lower his head slightly for them to be eye to eye. Whatever expression he gives, Shen Qingqiu does not see, as he is too distracted looking towards the door trying to listen for the Killer.
There are no sounds. The only thing Shen Qingqiu is able to hear in this tiny space is Binghe's breaths in his ear. Somehow, even though they aren't touching, he swears he feels the heat coming from Binghe's body. The other man must be burning like a furnace or Shen Qingqiu himself is just always cold. Either way, somehow, it feels kind of nice standing close together like this...
Suddenly Shen Qingqiu feels himself getting flustered. He doesn't know why and on instinct he almost pushes Binghe away.
But he is the one who pulled him closer... What kind of hot and cold behavior is he doing? Confusing the poor boy? Whatever is going on, he can handle a few more moments of them standing like this!
A minute pass. Two minutes. As the seconds tick into a third, without any sign of the Killer, Shen Qingqiu dares to pull the spiritbox from Binghe's pocket. A weird sound leaves the other man, but Shen Qingqiu does not take note of it as he turns on the box.
No sound of static. It is completely quiet.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Shen Qingqiu gently pushes Binghe a step back. Binghe does not resist the movement, as if he also needs some space to breathe.
"False alarm, we should be good," Shen Qingqiu says, pocketing the spiritbox himself this time.
"Good... that is- it is good," Binghe answers, stumbling over his words for some reason.
Well, it is nice to have been hiding for no reason for once. The Killer must just have been passing by, but is clearly not anywhere near. Shen Qingqiu unlocks the door and leaves the key in. But before he leaves, he looks towards the rusty cabinet.
"Binghe, let me show you something," Shen Qingqiu starts, rummaging around the tools on the shelves.
Like he hoped, he quickly finds a few bandages. Pulling a strip of the cloth free, he carefully presses it against the edge of the cabinet. Moving it up and down a few times, he is able to loosen the thin needle stuck in there.
The door of the cabinet swings open. Pocketing the rest of the bandages he puts the needle in one of the beakers where it can hurt no one.
Binghe makes no comment on Shen Qingqiu's behavior, but steps over to look into the cabinet with him. At first, it looks like there is not much of use in there. More chemistry tools as well as a flask of oil. Some other supplies.
The truly interesting thing is the hidden crate that gets revealed when Shen Qinqiu removes the fake back at the bottom of the cabinet.
He moves aside to give space and Binghe crouches down to take a closer look at the crate.
Matching the old cabinet, the crate appears just as rusty and decaying. But when Binghe reaches out to try to pull it open, it does not give an inch. What he does notice is a thick needle-esque pin stuck in the side. Easily pulled out, Binghe finds it has some kind of insignia on the end.
Shen Qingqiu watches on as Binghe studies the pin. Like he himself did the first time he found the crate and the pin, Binghe leans back on his heels to study it closer to the light. Back then, Shen Qingqiu hadn't been able to remember having seen anything like the insignia before. Neither did he see anything like it afterwards. In the end, this became one more puzzle to get stuck on, dismissed while he went to solve the easier ones.
He expects Luo Binghe to not recognize it from anywhere like him. To ask him what it is, just like the other times Binghe found something he didn't know.
But Binghe surprises him.
Reaching over, Binghe starts tugging at the frame. The overall thing does not move at all, but after using a bit of force, he somehow manages to pull a piece of it.
Shen Qingqiu steps over to see what he got. His eyes widens as he sees Binghe hold up a second pin, one almost exactly like the first, the insignia slightly patterned differently. When Binghe turns to find a stunned Shen Qingqiu behind him, he gives a humble smile, handing over both pins to Shen Qingqiu.
Pin in each hand, Shen Qingqiu doesn't know what to say. Seeing his Seniors' surprise, Binghe reaches back to scratch at the back of his head. As if he didn’t mean to find this second pin, he tries to quietly explain:
"I just noticed the pattern on the frame didn't mirror exactly. And when I looked at the pin, the crest kind of resembled what I saw on the frame. I just went over to check it and compare and since it looked like it could be pulled loose, I just-"
Binghe continues to explain not knowing that his words are going in through one ear and out the next. Shen Qingqiu is not listening to a single word of what Binghe is saying. Too distracted by the huge realization he has just gotten. A realization, he quite frankly, should have had earlier.
Yes, Shen Qingqiu is a master completionist that searches every crook and nanny he can think of. But that is his limit. He can only investigate the things he thinks of investigating.
Having someone else, someone like Binghe, with another view of the world, means someone who can take notice of the things Shen Qingqiu doesn't even consider.
Shen Qingqiu, used to the logic of games and already aware of what the painting hides, didn’t consider to check for more secrets. Binghe, who believes this is real life and has no idea which item goes with which puzzle, looks it over from scratch.
With no bias, he can look it over with a clear mind, finding things that Shen Qingqiu might first find after countless loops of endless searching.
Just what else will Binghe be able to find that Shen Qingqiu have missed?
The thought both excites and frustrates him. Excites, because Binghe might truly be able to help Shen Qingqiu pass this level faster and more painless than Shen Qingqiu ever would be able to do on his own. And frustrating, because inevitable, everything Binghe finds will be proof of every failure Shen Qingqiu has had since waking up in Honored Eternal Path of Demise.
Well, that is not really Binghe's fault. Shen Qingqiu will just have to take it with a straight face. Holding both pins tightly in his hands, he feels as if his entire body just got recharged. That the fatigue and creeping exhaustion got shattered with determination and motivation back to take its place.
Shen Qingqiu can't wait to find out what else they will find.
"Binghe," he says, interrupting whatever monologue Binghe is still working on. Having his full attention, Shen Qingqiu speaks loud and clear. "I think it is time I showed you the rest of the mansion."

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 26 - Memory Kept
In general, Binghe mostly looks fine, if a bit paler than usual. But Shen Qingqiu finds himself surprised with what he sees in Binghe's eyes. Based on his words, one would think they would be crinkled with worry or wide with fright. Maybe a bit wet around the edges, matching the vulnerability in Binghe’s voice.  But instead he finds something dark. Determined. Like a new goal has been set in his mind.
First Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
Shen Qingqiu opens his eyes to his room. For a moment, he doesn't even remember how to move. His arms and legs and head feeling alien and unreal. Like they are no more part of his body as the bed underneath him or the desk against the wall. He tries to force himself into action when he finds his legs folded against his chest, head pressing against his knees and his arms keeping him curled like a ball. Even his hands have pulled into tight fists.
His entire body feels stiff as he slowly manages to uncurl himself. Not from what killed him, but simply from the tension of keeping his prior position. Like every other time, his death should have been instant, but was not. Like every other time, he got to feel the entirety of the split second of his end.
His skin splitting apart as the pressure from the walls forced his meat to pour out his skin. His bones tearing apart, becoming nothing more than dust. Everything that made him into a person, ripped until he was no different from a pile of minced meat. Ready to be used as bun filling, steamed and served to perfection.
What a horrific sight he must have left behind. So with those thoughts, he pushes himself off the bed to leave.
He stumbles briefly, but is quickly back on his feet. Without hesitation, he is out the door, walking with intent. Before anything else, there is one thing he has to be certain of.
Shen Qingqiu reaches the entrance of the mansion relatively quickly. As he steps out of the hallway, he sees Luo Binghe and Ning Yingying in conversation. As they both look up, what he needed to verify is immediately confirmed.
As Shen Qingqiu locks eyes with Luo Binghe, there is no doubt that the man still remembers. From the second floor, Shen Qingqiu can't quite see what his eyes say, but there is a certain vulnerability to the way Binghe holds himself. Insecurity, maybe? He isn't quite sure.
"Senior! You are here too?" Ning Yingying calls out.
"Senior," Luo Binghe repeats. It sounds weirdly weak, like it is an echo of a time he tried to call out to Shen Qingqiu. A time without an answer.
His tone of voice is noticeable even by Ning Yingying as she sends Luo Binghe a concerned glance.
"A-Luo?"
"Ning Yingying. I need to speak with Senior alone for a moment. Can you wait here meanwhile?"
Sounding like that, there is no way Ning Yingying can refuse. So it is with a strange feeling in the air that Shen Qingqiu descends the stairs, following Luo Binghe inside the safe room.
There is some awkward tension between them when Shen Qingqiu closes the door behind him. That tension quickly breaks into something weirder, when Luo Binghe suddenly has his hands all over him, barely before the door is fully closed.
First they grab his shoulders, holding them tightly for a second. Then they moved down along his arms, reaching and catching his fingertips in a loose hold. Binghe squeezes them tightly once before he lets go. His hands don’t stay off for long. Moving to Shen Qingqiu’s legs, he starts feeling them up, pressing against their sides as if confirming for himself that the skin is still intact.
"Binghe!" Shen Qingqiu splutters, feeling his face heat as Luo Binghe kneels before him. Before the other man can start pulling off his shoes to make certain all his toes are counting, Shen Qingqiu pulls him back up to standing. He is about to spit out some nonsense to reassure Binghe, but before he can speak, Binghe has moved his hands to his face.
Both palms coming up to cradle his cheeks, Shen Qingqiu suddenly finds himself caught in Luo Binghe's intense stare. His cheeks already shaded red, Shen Qingqiu unwittingly finds himself lifting his own hands, using the sleeves to hide his face and put distance between him and Binghe.
"Senior looks okay," Binghe finally says after a time where Shen Qingqiu swears neither he or Binghe let out a single breath.
"Binghe could just have asked the Senior of his state of being," Shen Qingqiu states, willing the color off his face as fast as possible.
"I had to see it for myself," Binghe says, a thump slowly stroking back and forth on Shen Qingqiu's cheek. "After what happened, I... I just couldn't imagine Senior being whole and healthy like this again..."
There is that strange tone in his voice again. Blush fought down, Shen Qingqiu dares to lower his sleeves, carefully looking at Binghe over the top of his hands.
Shen Qingqiu isn't quite sure what it is. But with Luo Binghe's examination coming to an end, he is finally able to push him off.
"I told you before that injuries don't stay. You really don't need to worry about your senior like this," Shen Qingqiu says. He hesitates, before he adds: "I'm fine."
"If Senior says so," Luo Binghe nods, ever the obedient boy. Shen Qingqiu finds himself feeling slightly guilty, as if dying like that in front of Binghe had in any way been his faulthl. But unsure of what else to say, he directs the conversation elsewhere.
"We shouldn't stay here too long. If you remember how to get the spirit box, then quickly grab it and let us return to Ning Yingying."
"Okay Senior," Luo Binghe agrees, moving quickly to get the box. As he solves the puzzle to unlock it with swift hands, he asks: "Should we check the book as well while we are here?"
"Don't bother. We can check it some other time if we get stuck," Shen Qingqiu says, already turning around to rejoin Ning Yingying in the entrance.
When Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe step out of the safe room, Ning Yingying has barely moved from her spot. Hugging herself tightly, she is looking around with an anxious expression. When she sees them return, she is quick to step over, her face lighting up as if the earlier grimace had never existed.
"Did A-Luo and Senior Shen speak things through?" she asks, eyeing them both with a hint of worry.
"We did. You don't need to worry. Sorry you had to stay by yourself for this long," Shen Qingqiu apologises.
"It's fine, it wasn't for that long. As long as A-Luo and Senior are okay," she says, directing a slight smile towards them both.
"Ning Yingying. When Senior and I spoke, we agreed it would be best to explore the mansion. Not knowing who has taken us, we want to find out why we are here," Luo Binghe seamlessly joins the conversation. Lying so smoothly, Shen Qingqiu finds himself impressed with how quickly Binghe has come up with a cover story for them.
Of course Ning Yingying isn’t that easy to persuade, though.
"What...? Why would you stay here? I think it would be better for us to just leave. Something bad could happen if we stay?"
"It is dangerous to go out in this weather as well. Staying here until it clears up would be safer. We might even be able to find a phone to call for help with?"
"I- I still don't like it. What if whoever took us is still here? What if they intend to hurt us? No matter what, I think we should leave as soon as possible!"
Distress rising, Luo Binghe is quick to placate.
"Hey, it's okay. I understand. But for all we know, the person who took us could also be out there. The truth is we just don't know. That's why calling for help is our best bet. Once someone is coming to save us, we can barricade ourselves inside some room and wait until they arrive."
"But what if we can't find a phone? If this leads directly to the exit, it will be much quicker for us to leave that way. Don't you see that A-Luo?"
Shen Qingqiu has well and truly stepped outside of the conversation between Luo Binghe and Ning Yingying. Watching the two of them go back and forth, he is as always impressed with how well Luo Binghe handles his future wifes. Even if they are disagreeing, Binghe never loses his temper or kind voice. Thanks to this, Ning Yingying is also able to stay relatively calm, even as Shen Qingqiu knows she will eventually agree and listen to what Binghe is saying.
"Ning Yingying. No matter what, it is safest for all three of us to stay together. No one should go out into that weather alone. So won't you please stay with me and Senior as we look for the way out?"
"A-Luo..."
"I know it is scary to stay and scarier when we don't know what will happen. But as long as we stick together we can keep each other safe. I will keep you safe, Ning Yingying."
"..."
"If it helps, we can compromise. We will only stay until the rain stops. Once we can go outside without risking getting caught in the storm, we will do so. It might take a bit, but once it is safer to go outside, we will try to leave that way. How does that sound?"
"That sounds..." Ning Yingying starts. Her face is split with uncertainty, a battle between her fear and listening to Luo Binghe. Looking into Luo Binghe’s open and gentle eyes, a promise of safety and trust clear, truly, there is only one option for her to choose. Then suddenly she interrupts herself. "I'm sorry A-Luo, but I can't do it."
Wait, what?
"I hear what you are saying, but I just don't agree. I can't see anything worth staying for and even if we found a phone, would it even work? You can see how old this building is! I don't think anyone has been taking care of it for years. It would be a miracle if we even found a phone in the first place, nevermind one that would work," Ning Yingying starts explaining. Shen Qingqiu can barely follow along, though, still stuck on Binghe being rejected by one of his wives. "I understand that it is two against one and I am in the minority, but I still think it is best for at least one of us to look outside. So if you and Senior think it is best to stay and look around, then you should do so. Meanwhile I will go out and look for the exit. Once I find the way out, I will make sure to come back to get you both."
Following her small speech, Ning Yingying then turns around to leave. Seeing her about to open the doors, Shen Qingqiu can't stay quiet anymore and reaches out to take hold of her arm.
"Are you sure of this? It could be dangerous out there and you don't know-"
"I do know, Senior Shen," Ning Yingying interrupts him. She doesn't sound annoyed though, even giving him a tiny smile. "I know to be ready for anything. So don't worry about me. I will be back before you know it, okay?"
With those words, Shen Qingqiu has no choice but to release her. Stepping into the rain, Ning Yingying looks back at them once. Then before the heavy doors can fall closed, she gives them a thumbs up each.
"Promise to take care of each other!"
Silence falls over them as Ning Yingying leaves. Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe stand left behind, having witnessed Ning Yingying going out on her own for the second time. It is with dismay that Shen Qingqiu watches on, But what other choice does he have? He already learned his lesson about going outside too early in the game. And Luo Binghe made his stance about going without Shen Qingqiu clear in the last loop. It just makes no sense that a scared and defenseless Ning Yingying would be willing to go out on her own when there is the perfect choice of staying together with Luo Binghe instead.
Last session she got frustrated with them. That kind of makes sense. But this time? Luo Binghe said all the right words! So why didn't it work? How could a wife, any wife, ever go against Binghe? Shen Qingqiu finds himself puzzled by this behavior. But since they can do nothing about it for now, their only option is to return upstairs and continue with the game.
As they walk towards the shortcut once again, Shen Qingqiu begins to feel a nagging sense of worry. Keeping an eye on Binghe out of the corner of his eye, he tries to watch out for any hesitance or anxiety in the other man.
Seeing another person die so suddenly in front of your eyes would shock anyone. Luo Binghe's behavior while inside the safe room made it clear he is no exception. Shen Qingqiu doesn't consider himself special, but he does believe he and Binghe have gained some fondness for each other. Of course, Shen Qingqiu has always appreciated Binghe, but with these two loops, he doesn't believe Luo Binghe completely hates him, despite who they are. He treats him too kindly for that.
That's why Shen Qingqiu kind of wants to ask Binghe how he is feeling. Maybe offer some comfort. But how is he meant to do that?
Bringing up his own death is just too weird. And what if Binghe would rather forget it all and he would only make it worse by bringing it up? Binghe isn't even showing any signs of being horribly traumatised from seeing Shen Qingqiu become minced meat. Walking side by side, Binghe is just looking ahead, eyebrows furrowed as if he is in deep thought. Clearly, Shen Qingqiu is overthinking this whole thing and everything is perfectly f-
"Senior?"
"Wha- What is it?" Not expecting Binghe to suddenly speak out loud, Shen Qingqiu hurries to return to the present.
"Earlier... In the last loop. That piece of paper I found. You said it was for some puzzle. You know where it is meant to be used?" Luo Binghe asks, showing no signs of having noticed Shen Qingqiu was lost in thoughts.
"I do. It is not too far from the shortcut. If we could hurry with getting it back, I would appreciate that," Shen Qingqiu confirms with a nod.
Hearing Shen Qingqiu's words, Luo Binghe goes quiet once again. Thinking he was just asking for confirmation, Shen Qingqiu doesn't think about it deeper. Then suddenly Luo Binghe speaks up once again.
"What if we didn't have to go back and get the paper," Binghe says, more of a statement than a question. Shen Qingqiu finally looks at him fully, a questioning expression on his face.
"What do you mean?" He has to ask.
"I think... I think I remember what was drawn on that page quite well, Senior. So if you show me the puzzle, I think I could solve it without us having to go all the way back."
Oh, so that is why. Saving some time is always nice, so then they can just-
Wait.
He can just do that?!
Remember the solution to a puzzle after just one glance at a piece of paper?!
Well, Shen Qingqiu would suppose that does make sense. It is Binghe after all. Such a smart boy, he probably barely needs to take the briefest of looks at something before committing it to memory. Truly something to envy.
And even if he actually can't remember the solution, it shouldn't be too dangerous for Binghe to try. Imagining Luo Binghe setting up the poles, turning their beaks in their right direction, even if he got something wrong he wouldn't die from it. Some deus ex machina would happen to keep him alive, the hero of the story not someone that can be taken out just like that.
Of course, he could still get hurt... Luo Binghe may be unkillable, but he isn't actually invincible. He can still be harmed, as long as the harm doesn't take him out of the game. There are times when Shen Qingqiu was playing where Binghe would suffer some injury and he had to continue while Binghe stayed behind. So it wouldn't be completely without risk...
"Is Binghe sure he remembers exactly what was on that page?" Shen Qingqiu finds himself asking.
"Absolutely certain Senior. I have quite a good memory, I am sure I would get it right!" Speaking with great confidence, there is no doubt that Luo Binghe believes his words.
Still, Shen Qingqiu finds himself hesitating.
"Binghe... before we decide, you should know this. If the puzzle is the slightest bit incorrect, it will release a trap. A very deadly one. Knowing that, would you still risk it when we could just go get the page and be sure of it?"
Yes, Luo Binghe may be unkillable in this game. But if he is to do something dangerous, then he deserves to know what might happen. If he is to walk into something risky, then he won't be doing it because Shen Qingqiu wasn't willing to keep him informed!
Shen Qingqiu's warning doesn't appear to deter him though. "I'm sure I got this. It might be dangerous, but from what I have seen so far, everything in this mansion is dangerous. If this can save us some time, I believe it will be worth it."
Such determination. Shen Qingqiu only continues to become more impressed the more he spends time with Binghe. Even if he had been able to take a look at the piece of parchment a hundred times, he is certain he would not be nearly as confident in his memory as Binghe is. If Binghe is so certain of his skills, who is Shen Qingqiu to doubt him? If this is another perk of having Binghe as his teammate, Shen Qingqiu should be taking full advantage.
Really, this is great! He was a bit worried the same trap would appear again after they got the note. While he would definitely be more careful and stick closer to Luo Binghe to not get caught again, it would be preferred to just avoid the trap altogether. And Shen Qingqiu can always appreciate any effort to save time! There was so little he got to do the last session, so he wants to do so much more this one! It may be risky, but the reward would definitely be worth it!
"Okay. Then let me show you where it is, Binghe."

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 25 - Follow Darkness
Having inspected the room in full, Shen Qingqiu is just about to step over to check the locked door, just in case, when the spiritbox suddenly awakens.  Loud static are released, shocking both Luo binghe and Shen Qingqiu. With a curse, he turns around, seeing Luo Binghe pulling it out of his pocket. “Turn it off! Hurry!” Shen Qingqiu whisper-shouts and to Luo Binghe’s credit, he does so immediately.
First Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
A chill runs down Shen Qingqiu’s spine as he remembers what happened the last time he picked up a piece of paper from this room. If the spot he refuses to look at leaves a pit in his stomach, his failure afterwards fills it with vile. In a few steps he is right beside Luo Binghe who, unknowingly of Shen Qingqiu's state, hands over the paper.
"This looks quite old Senior, older than anything else we have seen so far, I think?" He says. Seeing the state of the sheet, Shen Qingqiu quite agrees.
The page has turned brown with age, rough and musty against the skin. The edges curl inwards, though it is still mostly flat. The dark black ink is almost unreadable amidst the spotchess of stain. But just barely, four circles form the shape of a trapeze. Each with their own beak pointing in different directions.
The parchment could not be more distinct from the clean and white paper that tricked Shen Qingqiu the last time he was here. If he felt stupid then as he died a slow and torturous death, right now he feels laughable. He truly was out of it to mistake the page back then. Had he been in his right mind, he would immediately have known it to be wrong.
"Does Senior recognize it?" Binghe asks, making him pause his self-reprimand.
"Yes, this is a good find. We have to use this to solve one of the puzzles we will find later," Shen Qingqiu praises. It is a good thing they are finding it this early, before anyone has a chance to switch it out for the fake hint.
"Will hints really lay out just like that?" Luo Binghe suddenly wonders. "When it is this obvious, I almost worry it could be some kind of trap."
Shen Qingqiu could laugh. How on the nose can Binghe be? He isn't wrong, of course. The obviousness is part of the trap, just only in certain circumstances.
As expected from the hero of the story. Not someone so easily tricked.
"You are thinking the right way, but in this case I know this page is the real deal. With how old and worn it is, it is unlikely to be something someone set up recently. Rather, if someone had done that..."
Looking around, Shen Qingqiu is quick to find a pen and clean paper from the desk. In no time at all does he copy the drawing on the parchment, except with the beaks turned in other directions. Like this, he has a clean page exactly like the one that tricked him.
"If you don't know what to look out for, something like this can easily trick you. But if you know beforehand which puzzle this is for and take a moment to think, you will realize the paper is too new and clean compared to the contraption of the puzzle. Well..." Shen Qingqiu hesitates before he adds: "At least as long as you have a moment to properly think."
He knows he is just making excuses for himself, but it was really too shameful that he got tricked back then. Comparing the two pages, they couldn't be much more different. Good thing Luo Binghe wasn't there to witness his mistakes then. That would have been too embarrassing…
"I understand what Senior is saying," Binghe nods like the good video game student he is. Lecturing his favorite character does manage to lift Shen Qingqiu's mood, making him almost forget his fear of this room.
As he is about to put the page he just drew down, he hesitates. He was just going to put it back where Binghe had found the original parchment, but the thought of doing so... Suddenly, Shen Qingqiu has a bad taste in his mouth.
When playing the game, the idea of the fake note was to introduce the concept that other characters could be dangerous. The in-game explanation for leaving the page is to trick the Killer. But when actually knowing what happens, this no longer makes any sense. Shen Qingqiu knows the Killer won't ever try to solve the puzzle in the laboratory, so what sense does it make to leave this as a trap?
If anything, there are only two people who might find this note and try to use it. Shen Qingqiu has no interest in seeing either of them suffer the same fate he did when he got hold of the fake note. Even if one of them might have been the cause when it happened to him.
Ripping the paper apart, he does not even leave the pieces to be picked up and put together later. He then packs away the real parchment together with the songbook, keeping both of them safe.
They have found not just one, but two great items in this room. Shen Qingqiu has a hard time imagining there to be a third, but still, he goes to check the bookshelf, Luo Binghe right behind him.
They quickly find most of the books to be notes on the management of the mansion. Sections about which maid and servant has which task, their pay each week as well as short reports describing their mistakes and what they lack in skills.
All of it, written in the same red cursive.
"Binghe, could you confirm something for me?" Shen Qingqiu quietly asks.
"What is it, Senior?"
"Do you remember if this is the same writing as what was on the drawing we found in the forest?"
Binghe does not hesitate as he answers: "Yes, it is definitely the same handwriting."
So Shen Qingqiu was right. He doesn't know what he can use this knowledge for, but it is the kind of info he never got when he played the game originally. Descriptions for most items were not that detailed in the game unless they hid some puzzle. Investigating most random shelves would usually just provide an item of two and not bother with mentioning anything else.
On this shelf there isn't really anything of note though. Behind some books they find a flask of lamp oil. An item that isn’t particularly useful to them yet. Luo Binghe still pockets it away, but there is nothing other than that.
They both hurry towards the secret passage, Luo Binghe in front.
They both step through, closing the hidden door behind them as fast as possible. It is right by the last second, just as the passage fully falls closed, that Shen Qingqiu hears the rustle of a key in the door. Right before it is pushed open with a heavy force.
They don't see who steps inside, but it does not take the genius of a hero to guess who it must be.
Leaning against opposite walls, neither Luo Binghe or Shen Qingqiu dare to breathe. First looking at the closed opening, they slowly turn their heads until their eyes meet. Loud footsteps that they both know quite well by now can be heard moving around the room. While they on occasion move closer to where they are hidden, at no point are there any signs of the secret passage being opened.
Still, it is never safe to stay this close to the Killer. Shen Qingqiu counts the seconds in his head. As he hits the first minute, Luo Binghe very slowly begins to move.
Lifting his foot forward, he very carefully puts it down. He doesn't put his full weight onto it immediately, but takes his time to be certain no creaking of floorboards will reveal their presence. Luckily for the both of them, with the thick carpet muting his steps, Luo Binghe appears to be able to move forward without alerting the Killer.
Luo Binghe doesn't walk far before he turns towards Shen Qingqiu. Pointing his head forward, he doesn't move until Shen Qingqiu begins to follow. Like this, the two of them slip away. It is first when they round a corner, far enough away that they can hear no more heavy boots, that they dare breathe out in relief.
For a moment, they just stand still, their backs moist with sweat, praising their luck. Once his chest is not as tight, Shen Qingqiu reaches out for the spiritox. Luo Binghe hands it over with no complaint and Shen Qingqiu dares to turn it on for the briefest second.
It still releases a low static, but so quiet it can barely be heard. Enough to know that the Killer is still not too far. Enough that they don't have to fear every little sound they might make.
"Senior was right. That box can truly mean the difference between life and death," Luo Binghe says with a whisper. Even with the distance to the Killer, it doesn't feel quite right to speak in a normal volume yet.
Shen Qingqiu nods in agreement. "Still, we have to be careful about keeping it turned on. There is always the risk of the Killer hearing the static as well and looking for its source."
"Hmm," Luo Binghe nods in agreement. "We have to be careful, then."
"Always," Shen Qingqiu finishes with not quite a smile. There is something about teaching Binghe the rules of the game that reminds him of when he would make guides to post online. Using his hard earned knowledge of the game to help others progress. He knows Binghe doesn't really need it, being the unkillable hero of the game and all, but still. It is nice having someone listen to him like this.
"What do we do now, Senior?"
"Now we go back. I know where we can use that slip of paper you found, so let us put it to good use. We also now know the location of the Killer, so that should give us some time to solve the puzzle in peace. I will turn on the spiritbox once we are further away. It will warn us again when he gets near."
"That sounds good. I will lead the way then, Senior," Luo Binghe says. As he takes the lead, he appears to have also been infected by Shen Qingqiu's approving mood, something like mirth shining in his eyes.
The walk back inside the shortcut feels less ominous as the walk in. The locked study is a bit away from the shortcut entrance, but now loaded with very useful items, Shen Qingqiu can appreciate Binghe’s involvement.
If it wasn't for Binghe being able to remember the last session, he would never have shown Shen Qingqiu this quicker and safer way inside the locked study. Had everything been as usual, then once he had stepped into the entrance, Binghe would have given him the eyes of a stranger and happily gone with Ning Yingying instead.
While in the long run it will be a hassle for Binghe to keep remembering, it just means Shen Qingqiu has to appreciate the current benefits even more. Truly, the irony of the situation of Binghe being simultaneously the best and worst character to keep their memories is not lost on him.
But because of this, Shen Qingqiu will soon have his hands on two of the primary items he needs for this section. The flute will be easy to collect when needed, so now they just have to find the last instrument. Sadly, the shortcut only leads to the locked study for now. Once they unlock a transportable light source, they will have more options for exploration, but that is a thought for the future.
So deep in thought is Shen Qingqiu, planning his next steps, that he almost collides with Binghe's back once he rounds the corner. He stops just in time, wondering why Binghe stopped in his tracks, when he sees it.
The lights for the rest of the hallway have gone out. Inky black darkness facing them all the way to the one way out.
Somehow, the oil lamps in this specific area have all run out at the same time. The light is already quite dim, so with this amount of lamps turned off, there is no way for the ones still lit to provide enough light to the hallway. They can do nothing about the void that covers the last stretch.
Luo Binghe looks at this section quite calmly, though with an edge of annoyance. Why the lamps turned off, he can't explain, but the whole thing leaves a bad feeling in his stomach. Why would the lack of light keep them from leaving this way?
Shen Qingqiu knows exactly how it could do so.
Darkness and staying alive are two concepts that don't go well together. When blind to everything around you, traps don't need to be well hidden to have someone fall into them. Long ago, Shen Qingqiu learned the hard way just what can be hidden away like that. In the end, he had to accept the game's use of the dark to steer the player along the linear path. Both Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu find themselves suspecting the sudden change to the scenery and what this can mean for their progress.
"Senior, please stay close to me. It is straight forward the rest of the way, so let's just walk through this," Luo Binghe says, preparing himself for anything to jump out of the dark. With such a narrow hallway, it would be hard for something to hide, but everything in this mansion leaves him on edge.
Shen Qingqiu himself had been ready to suggest they walk back and see if they could leave through the locked study. But hearing Binghe speak firmly, such a suggestion suddenly feels silly. While he knows why darkness can be so dangerous, Binghe does not. To Binghe, this must at most seem like a bad omen. But nothing more alarming than that.
For a moment, the crazy thought of reaching out and grabbing Binghe's hand fills Shen Qingqiu's mind. That way, they would not get too far from each other and Shen Qingqiu should be able to stay within the safety of Binghe's hero halo to get through the darkness together.
As soon as the thought hits, Shen Qingqiu feels his face redden with embarrassment. Just who does he think he is? He already shamed himself earlier, when Binghe had to hold his hand just to get him inside the study. Behaving like some scared maiden who needs the comfort of Binghe's strong, toned arms to feel safe.
Shen Qingqiu knows what his role in the story is. And it is not staying by the side of the hero. As a man and a scum villain, the only one who can keep Shen Qingqiu safe is himself. So despite his traitorous mind begging otherwise, he never reaches out his hand. Instead, he keeps a step behind Binghe as darkness swallows them whole.
It only takes a few steps before it is so dark that they can not even see their hands right in front of their faces. With the lack of sight, their other senses heighten, until their heavy breaths and beating hearts echo against the walls. Like the beat from a drum, it reverberates until they can feel it to the tip of their fingers and down their toes.
With every step, Shen Qingqiu swears the narrow walls grow even narrower. While the sides have yet to brush against his skin and the roof has yet to hit his head, he feels as if he is walking further ahead into the maw of a beast. Something monstrous ready to swallow him whole.
Only his proximity to Binghe and knowing that nothing too deadly can attack at the risk of hitting them both keeps him sane enough to keep going forward.
There are no words to describe this feeling except wrong and crooked and against human rationality. The kind of dark that every child is born fearing for what it hides away and for what might take them.
Shen Qingqiu can’t help but wonder. Will he be taken as well?
"Are you okay Senior? Remember to stay close to me until we are out," Luo Binghe says, even his low voice like a shout in the void.
"I am right behind you. Don't stop walking," Shen Qingqiu answers tensely. Somehow it feels wrong to break the darkness with his voice. Still, he forces himself to do so.
After another earth shattering beating of hearts, Luo Binghe once again speaks. Eagerness has taken root in his words and it is clear why: "Senior, I see some light. We are soon out!"
Just as these words are said, Just as this simple promise is uttered, that is when Shen Qingqiu finds his foot catching against something hard and unyielding.
Foot stuck, Shen Qingqiu's first expectation is for him to die right here and now. He freezes. Waiting for darts to shoot out or blades to swing, for his limbs to be cut off from his body or to be punctured full of holes. For something sharp and pointy and horrible to tear him apart into pieces.
When nothing happens, he grows more unsure of what to do. His foot is still caught and by something he can't just immediately kick off.
Fumbling around randomly in the darkness helps no one. Instead, Shen Qingqiu gets down on a knee, feeling around until he finds the object by his foot. The cold bite of metal meets his skin, but nothing too sharp or spiked. He finds he can easily take hold of it with his fist, ready to pull it off.
Exerting enough force, he is able to rip the metal apart, freeing his foot.
It is just as he does so, he feels something else gives. The sound of a snap and then something like rope whizzing past.
With a start, Shen Qingqiu realizes Binghe has continued walking. That with the distance between them, Shen Qingqiu has made himself into a target once again. That in the seconds it took for him to free himself, Binghe has become visible again in the low light at the end of the tunnel.
Shen Qingqiu can only look straight ahead as he sees Binghe turn back towards him. He can only look as Binghe's expression turns from relief at being out of the dark to frown when he does not see Shen Qingqiu behind him. As Binghe's eyes suddenly widen as alarm takes over.
Luo Binghe is not even able to call out Shen Qingqiu's name. With a deafening smash, the walls on either side of his senior collide. The shock from the force large enough that he falls over, onto his hands and knees.
One by one, each of the lamps turn on again. One by one, each of them regains their dim light, lighting up the hallways once more. One by one, Luo Binghe is able to once more see what is in front of him. See two walls pressed so tightly together, not even a strand of hair can fit in between.
With a series of clicks, the walls slowly pull apart. A wet crunch followed by a moist squish sound out. Sticky entrails are stretched out, clinging to the walls, before gravity makes them fall to the ground with a soggy thud.
Before him, Luo Binghe gets to witness it directly as the walls release the smear of meat and bones and fluid that is all that is left of his senior.

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 24 - Unlocked Shortcut
It is not the lack of light that makes it feel like the walls are pressing in towards them, but rather the much narrower passages. If Shen Qingqiu were to reach his hand above his head, he could easily put his palm against the ceiling. It is not low enough that he and Luo Binghe have to crouch, but only just barely. The walls on each side are also close enough that they can't even walk besides each other. Though Shen Qingqiu would be able to push himself past Luo Binghe if it was needed. It is the exact kind of hallway that makes Shen Qingqiu fear one wrong step would turn him into minced meat. His only security is to stay close to Luo Binghe. The more deadly the trap, the more it might hesitate to trigger if it runs the risk of hitting the halo of the hero.
First Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
"-it can be used to detect whether the Killer is in the vicinity. Though, there is a risk of him hearing it, so we have to use it carefully."
Holding the spirit box out, Luo Binghe takes it to investigate. As he turns it around in his hands, looking at its strange build, he asks further questions.
"So this- you called it a spiritbox? How does it know whether the Killer is nearby? And why do you call it a spiritbox? That is quite a strange name."
"How it knows, I can't say. But it has warned me plenty of times in prior sessions, so I can confirm its function. As for the name..." Shen Qingqiu hesitates. When gaining the item, its name was written in big, clear letters. It's not exactly like he was the one who named it. But so far, the horror they have experienced has been quite grounded, so he can see why Luo Binghe is asking.
"I just call it that. I once happened to read something about ghost hunting and they used a similar tool with the same name."
"Ah, I see... I have to admit, I wouldn't have imagined Senior to be into hunting ghosts."
"I'm not," Shen Qingqiu answers simply before turning towards the bookshelves behind the desk.
He has made a decision. For now, he will assume Luo Binghe will remember each loop. If that is the case, he better get the explanations out of the way early, so they don't have to waste time on it later.
Also, the more info he shares with Luo Binghe, the less Luo Binghe will suspect him of hiding stuff. He doesn't want to reveal too much too early, but all the knowledge he already gained about the upper floors should be safe enough to share. If Luo Binghe tries to ask him for future stuff, he will stay vague depending on what it is. And anything about future levels he will act completely ignorant about. Better to not get into those messes if he can avoid it.
Introducing Luo Binghe to the safe room and its mechanics is surprisingly easy despite how he is still hiding this world being a video game. Just a few excuses of having experimented during his loops seems to be enough to leave Luo Binghe satisfied.
He has been ignoring the spirit box for many sessions now, but since they are already here, he decided they might as well bring it with them. He clearly isn't saving any time this session and it will be good for Luo Binghe to see how it works in practice.
Really, there is only one item left to introduce, though one he is still considering whether it is worth it.
The hint book still stands on the shelf, obvious to Shen Qingqiu's trained eye. Since his first time here, he has not touched it a single time. Had he been stuck with no idea how to progress he might have given it a chance. But as he remembers how useless it was back when playing the game, he has yet to bother.
In this case he doesn't think it will hurt to bring up. Free info to deliver so Binghe stays trusting.
"Finally, there is this one book to note. In case we get lost or don't know how to progress during the loops, it is meant to guide us in the right way. Though from experience, I can already tell you it is generally not worth bothering with.
Pulling the book off the shelf, it is heavy in his hand as he lifts it up to show. Luo Binghe pockets the spirit box, stepping around the desk to look past Shen Qingqiu's shoulder down at the book.
"Senior truly is impressive. It looks no different from the others. How did you find out it was special?"
"It's just about knowing what to look for. Though really, I have never found a use for it."
"You said it is meant to guide us. How does it do that?"
"Well, if it actually worked, you just flip to a random page and a message-"
action following words, Shen Qingqiu opens the book randomly. He expects to either get a blank page or some kind of nonsense useless advice. Instead, he stops in his tracks when he is met with a single bold sentence, shakily written in such large letters that they spread across both pages.
STOP IGNORING ME
What...?
For a moment, Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe just stare at the book. Hesitantly, he flips to another page, but they are completely blank. Repeating this a couple of times confirms this to be the only thing written in the entire book.
"Senior, what does this mean...?" Luo Binghe carefully asks above Shen Qingqiu's shoulder. Finding himself speechless, Shen Qingqiu tries to make sense of the meaning.
Since the very first time Shen Qingqiu has been inside of this safe room, he has not looked into this book a single time. Not until now. But before he transmigrated, back in the real world when he was playing the game non-stop, he used the hint book many, many times.
This is how he knows how useless it is! How many times did he not waste time trying to make sense of whatever nonsense it had written before he just gave up and looked up a guide online?? It was one of the main reasons for why he made so many guides himself! Clearly the game itself was not going to help you play it!
But out of every single time he checked the pages of the hint book, not a single time did they appear as anything like this.
Most commonly the hints would appear as some rhyming riddle that was impossible to solve 85% of the time, with the last 15% being so easy it took out all the fun. But never did it ever feel like the book was speaking directly to him. And never were the hints written in such a messy scrawl.
Who is he meant to stop ignoring...?
The Killer? He doesn't think he has had a single session that could be classified as him ignoring the Killer. No, that bastard is too good at tracking him down for that.
Is it some other character? Liu Mingyan he literally just met for the first time in the last loop and he felt like they had a good amount of interactions. Ning Yingying? Well, he has been avoiding her for a good while. Is that an issue? But as Shen Qingqiu he is not meant to meet up with other characters at this point of the game. Why would it be a problem that he is not constantly hanging out with her?
Or could it be-
No, that section hasn't even been unlocked yet. Unless the message is literally just the hint book telling him to get his head in the game and solve the goddamn puzzles? But how is that a hint! He knows he needs to progress, that is what he is constantly trying to do!
Stupid useless hint book! See if he is ever going to check inside it again when it behaves like this!
"Utter nonsense, I suspect. This is why I said it is not worth wasting time on."
Shen Qingqiu shuts the book with a loud smack. Right as it closes, though, he swears he hears the sound of a muffled far-away scream.
The wording must be leaving him on edge. He knows there is no one out there to make such a scream. Ning Yingying is both too far away and should not have reached the gates yet for it to come from her. With the Killer not activated yet, there is also no reason for the other characters to be in peril. There aren’t even any minor monsters or random NPC’s in this level of the game, so truly nothing to make a sound like that.
If anything, it also didn't sound like a scream of fear or terror? More like... frustration? Or something similar?
It must be his paranoia making him hear things. Creaks coming from an old mansion or the howling win. Nothing to worry about. He puts the book back on the shelf, where it will stay for a long, long time if he has any say. Without sparing it another glance, he turns to leave the safe room.
Luo Binghe does not stay back, but is quick to follow, keeping in step with Shen Qingqiu. As they return to the entrance, Shen Qingqiu throws a worried glance towards the heavy main doors, but it is too late to do anything now. Why Ning Yingying would rather weather the storm on her own than stay with him and Luo Binghe, he does not understand. He can only hope that her going out there alone is not a death sentence...
"Through that is where Ning Yingying and I woke up, both in the previous loop and this one. Has Senior had a chance to explore those hallways yet?" Luo Binghe suddenly interrupts his thoughts as he points towards a set of doors. He sounds curious, like his assumption is that Shen Qingqiu has searched every single nook and cranny to find all the secrets this mansion contains.
Well, Binghe is not really wrong, but in this case-
"I checked it out just once. Almost every door was locked, though. Out of the two rooms I could enter, I couldn't find anything interesting."
"Those were probably mine and Ning Yingying's rooms then. I also don't think they have anything special," Luo binghe nods along. He takes a moment to think before he continues. "There was one door missing its door handle though. Do you know anything about that Senior?"
Of course Shen Qingqiu knows about that, but he decides to stay quiet and just shake his head. Until that door handle is found, that area of the mansion will stay closed off. It's why he hasn't bothered spending more time around those hallways than that one initial check.
"It is good to know, but it is better to keep our focus on the upper floors. That is where the majority of the mansion is unlocked and are some of the only areas we can explore from here." Shen Qingqiu says instead.
Walking up the stairs feels weird to do with Luo Binghe right behind him. Just how many times have he walked up here on his own, doing his best to stay away from others while progressing in the game? Luo Binghe was a great asset in the last loop, but Shen Qingqiu had always expected their partnership to be temporary. He can't help but feel odd to suddenly be accompanied like this.
Luckily, Luo Binghe does not seem to mind. As they walk down the long hallways, Shen Qingqiu starts to explain what Luo Binghe should expect. Just a few points here and there such as the best way to avoid traps and how to recognize real doors from the endless rows of fakes.
A good example comes up when they reach his room. Though, when Luo Binghe asks if he can look inside, Shen Qingqiu declines with the same reason Luo Binghe used for his own and Ning Yingying's rooms earlier.
Once they reach the cross section of the hallways, that is when Shen Qingqiu hesitates. Where should they start? In the loop just before he went astray with Luo Binghe, he had solved the piano puzzle in the music room. In the secret room it had unlocked he hadn't found any items of use, though. Until he had all the items required for the big puzzle inside there is no need to return to it.
Contemplating their options, Luo Binghe waiting patiently at his side, Shen Qingqiu suddenly has a realization. He had been trying to reach the locked room when everything went to shit in that session. Sadly, back then he hadn't been able to investigate the room properly, distracted and absentminded as he had been. Trying to get the Killer to unlock the door once again seems nearly impossible.
But what if there was another way?
"Binghe, you said once you and Liu Mingyan had left the basement, she showed you around the short- some secret passages. Would you be able to find those again?"
"Oh, absolutely Senior! Just follow me, they should be this way."
Walking straight ahead, it is Luo Binghe's turn to lead. Shen Qingqiu does point out the rooms they pass on their way such as the music room, the kitchenette and the living room. It is before they reach the laboratory that Luo Binghe stops by a set of doors that Shen Qingqiu remembers as being just as fake as most of the other doors.
Still, Luo Binghe pulls out his knife and to Shen Qingqiu's astonishment, he is able to slide it inside the doorframe, an area Shen Qingqiu was certain was pure wall. Twisting the knife around for a bit, Luo Binghe is able to loosen some kind of mechanism, the door swinging open.
Fake turned real just by the use of knowledge and the right tool. Shen Qingqiu is certain he would never have found this on his own, applauding Luo Binghe in his mind. He of course doesn't have a convenient knife that can unlock the door, but if he ever has to access the shortcuts himself, he now knows of one way.
Together they enter the new passage that has revealed itself.
It does not take long for Shen Qingqiu to begin to feel claustrophobic in these hallways. While it is the same deep red carpet and matching wallpaper that surround them, the lightning is much duller, making the shadows deeper. Interestingly enough, it is not candlesticks that provide the light, but instead old-fashioned oil lamps mounted to the walls.
As they continue, at one point a downward staircase reveals itself. Though the steps don't go very far before they are utterly covered by darkness. Shen Qingqiu, who has already learned his lesson about darkness and traps does not even consider going down there. Luo Binghe makes a brief comment about that being where he and Liu Mingyan came from, but otherwise also doesn't stop.
Since they entered, Shen Qingqiu has wondered whether they will find Liu Mingyan here. As far as he remembers and from what she said, she doesn't have a room like the rest of them, but instead wakes up directly in these hallways. Where exactly that is, Shen Qingqiu doesn't know. Either way, they don't see any signs of her as they reach their destination.
What stands before them isn't exactly a door, but it is clear the surface can still be pushed to the side. Luo Binghe is quick to do so, opening up for a room Shen Qingqiu has only ever seen once before.
Luo Binghe immediately steps inside. Shen Qingqiu, on the other hand, suddenly finds his body refusing to move.
From where he is standing inside the secret passage, he can see it is some kind of study. A few bookshelves line the walls and there is a dark wooden desk close to the back half of the room. Besides that, there isn't much else he can see from his current angle. Yet still, he does not go forward.
"Senior...?" Luo Binghe calls him questionable when Shen Qingqiu doesn't follow.
He just... He just needs to step inside. It is just some room. Actually, it is not just some room. It is the one room he has been fighting tooth and nail, session after session, to get inside off. There is no other place in the mansion that he has spent so much effort towards entering. From trying to trick the Killer into unlocking the door to his one attempt at stealing the key himself, many deaths have been caused by Shen Qingqiu trying to get inside this very room.
And now, as he finally is able to enter just like that, he finds himself frozen in place.
"Senior, is everything okay?" Luo Binghe worriedly asks when Shen Qingqiu hasn't moved for way too long.
Shen Qingqiu tries to nod at first, but realizes Luo Binghe might not be able to see itin the low light. "I'm fine, I just- Just one moment Binghe."
Taking deep breaths, Shen Qingqiu tries to get his act together. He puts all his will into putting one leg in front of the other, to just move forward. Forcing his body to act despite every instinct in him screaming to turn away. He is his own master and he will step inside this room and progress the game!
He does not move.
Grinding his teeth together, he feels frustration bubble up. But he just can't take another step.
Ready to just throw himself into the room, he startles when he suddenly feels a touch on his hand. Looking up, he hadn't even noticed Luo Binghe had stepped back inside the secret passage.
With a soft expression of comfort, Luo Binghe takes hold of Shen Qingqiu's hand. His palm is warm and soft and somehow… Somehow it manages to calm the racing of Shen Qingqiu's heart.
Just a little.
Pulling him along, Luo Binghe steps back inside the room, Shen Qingqiu right behind him. As he passes the hidden opening Shen Qingqiu can feel his breath getting caught in his throat. For a second, he is certain some terrible trap will fall upon him or the Killer will burst through the door. He is convinced he will be met with bloody red and empty eyes.
Nothing happens.
Shen Qingqiu walks safely through the secret passage and finds himself inside a very normal study.
Luo Binghe does not let go of his hand as Shen Qingqiu can finally fully see the room in full.
In its entirety, the room isn't particularly big. It could easily be imagined as the study for some high-ranking servant or hire. It is enough hidden away that paperwork can be filled without disturbance and comfortable enough to meet with some high class visitors. It doesn't contain much besides the bookshelves and desk. A cupboard is pushed to the side, revealing itself to be the hidden door to the shortcut.
Everything in the room is set up extremely meticulously and kept in order. The books on the shelf are sorted alphabetically and by subject and there is not a single piece of stray paper on the desk. Everything has been arranged in such a precise way that in itself it tells a lot about the owner of this study without Shen Qingqiu having to know who it is.
Which makes it all the more unusual to see the cluttered pile haphazardly thrown into one corner of the room.
All of this is taken in by Shen Qingqiu. All, but one spot his eyes refuses to turn towards. His hand feels clammy in Luo Binghe's hold and the longer they stay like this, the more Shen Qingqiu can feel his embarrassment build.
He is a grown man! How long does he plan to stand here being comforted by Luo Binghe? It's not like he is a future wife! Even if that one area of the room makes him sick to his stomach just thinking about it, he should be able to handle it. This is a horror game! What use will he be if he let himself be affected by every terrible thing that happens?
Forcing himself to release Luo Binghe's hold, he keeps his head fixedly turned towards the pile on the floor as he walks over to it. Standing closer, it becomes clear to him that it is not by any small force that this mess has been thrown here. Kneeling down, he finds books with broken spines and ripped paper. Studying the wall right besides, there are even a few marks left from where it has been hit with violence.
Luo Binghe takes the chance to look at the desk while Shen Qingqiu riffles through the mess.
After looking through a couple of pages, he is certain he recognizes the writing. Taking a second to remember, he realizes the red cursive lines are similar to what was written on the child's drawing that he and Binghe found in the forest. Back then, he didn't have his glasses, so he couldn't read the words himself, but the red pen used is quite distinct.
Picking up a page at random, Shen Qingqiu skims through its content. He doesn't understand much at first, as it is hard to find the meaning without context. That is when another piece catches his attention. While it has been ripped apart at least twice, he is still able to recognize the official paper for what it is.
A marriage certificate.
On this particular fragment, Shen Qingqiu is not able to find the names of the couple. Neither is he able to find the rest of the page. Still, It is with a grim expression that he guesses this might not have been the happiest of marriages.
Something about this is poking something in his mind. Something this reminds him of. But for now, he puts it away. He will return to it later.
He continues to look through the pile when he finds a single book that is neither broken nor contains any red cursive writing. Looking it over, his eyes widens as he realizes what it is.
This-! Did he just-! Is one of the puzzle pieces really just laying around wildly like this-?
Looking it over, he searches for any signs of the book being a fake. But truly, it seems legit. A dark leather cover with the subtlest imprints of flowers and a single line of golden text on the front, the songbook looks exactly as Shen Qingqiu remembers it.
He quickly packs it away to take with him. It's not that he expects that he will use it this session, but just the knowledge that he can find it here later is a huge advantage. Especially with the shortcut, this has now become one of the easiest puzzle pieces to collect.
Excitement begins to bubble in his stomach as he stands back up. It is only thanks to Binghe remembering the last loop that he has been able to find this so easily! He is thankful and eager when he turns back towards Binghe.
Binghe, who is holding a single piece of paper in his hand. A paper that, once Shen Qingqiu is close enough to see what it contains, he realizes he remembers all too clearly.

Absolutely in love with this! They both look amazing and love how you exactly capture the way I imagine them to wear their uniforms! Binghe's curls are so nicely wild and SQQ's falls so nicely <3
Poor cheat sheet who just wanna progress in the game but is cursed by dying-constantly-syndrome 😔 Hopefully he will have a nice good boy Binghe to help him survive just a bit longer ^^

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 21 - Wake-Up Call
Luo Binghe is checking the bricks in the wall, tapping them with the crowbar. On occasion he uses it to check for any loose hold. Shen Qingqiu stares at him with empty eyes until Luo Binghe finally finds the spot. Using the crowbar to pull the brick loose, he manages to catch it before it falls to the floor. Carefully, he puts it down without a sound.  The hole that is left in the wall isn't wide. It is quite deep, enough that Luo Binghe has to stick his entire arm inside before he finds what is hidden inside.
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
“Senior, please. Before you assume anything, let me explain. I promise it isn’t what you think-”
Shen Qingqiu finds it quite fascinating to observe Luo Binghe at this very moment. The words he says are quite similar to just prior, but the way he behaves is anything but.
Before, Luo Binghe had been stuttering and embarrassed. He hadn’t dared to step closer to Shen Qingqiu, instead hiding away as he tried to explain himself. His face had been flustered and he had moved around as if didn’t know what to do with himself.
The current Luo Binghe’s words are clear. He is quick to take hold of Shen Qingqiu’s arms, holding them close and forcing them to keep eye contact. His face has gone pale and he stands completely still like the rock of a mountain.
Both instances are of Luo Binghe feeling guilty. Both have regret leaking out like oil from a rotten barrel. But one guilt is expressed like a cluttered apology from an accidental mishap. The other is the bad consciousness of someone who knows they did something wrong.
“When did you take my glasses?” Shen Qingqiu ask, surprised by his own voice. He wasn't even trying to sound like the original goods.
For some reason he finds it very easy to stay in character right now.
“I…” Luo Binghe hesitates. He should have expected Shen Qingqiu to ask him directly. He gathers his thoughts and then explains in a low voice. “Right after we ran from the Killer the first time. When I took your jacket to bandage your foot, I noticed them in your pocket. You were so out of it, I decided to keep them safe for you.”
Shen Qingqiu nods. That makes sense. That was right after his foot got in an intimate relationship with the Killers axe, so Luo Binghe could have easily taken his glasses without him noticing. His entire memory of the incident is a bit muddy, so he can understand why Luo Binghe thought it would be a good idea to keep them safe.
Then he asks the second question on his mind.
“And why didn’t you give them back to me?”
“That is- I wasn’t- So much was-" Luo Binghe starts. He tries a few more attempts before he drops his shoulders and gives the weakest excuse known to man. "I forgot..."
“You forgot. I see.” Shen Qingqiu says, staring straight at Luo Binghe. The shame is definitely catching up to the other man, as he is suddenly unable to meet his gaze. instead his eyes cast downwards.
Shen Qingqiu knows Luo Binghe is a better liar than that. His excuse being so pitiful is almost enough to make him believe it. The problem is that he is too aware of exactly how smart Luo Binghe is. Even if he forgot about the glasses when they were studying the drawing back at the Killer’s hut, he would definitely have remembered them once Shen Qingqiu had asked him to read the diary for him.
Is he really meant to believe that note after note of Luo Binghe reading for him, that not a single time did the man remember that he had Shen Qingqiu’s glasses right in his back pocket? Never did he question why Shen Qingqiu wasn’t able to read the pages himself?
He could ask Luo Binghe. He could confront him with every instance it would have made sense for him to return the glasses. He could point out how obvious an issue it had been for Shen Qingqiu to have been unable to properly see. There is much Shen Qingqiu could say where it would be quite interesting to see Luo Binghe try to explain himself.
But why do that when he knows exactly why Luo Binghe didn’t return his glasses?
A lot has happened since he and Luo Binghe first left the mansion together. They have been through much. Lives have been in danger and strong emotions have been felt. So really, it is no wonder that Shen Qingqiu this easily became complaisant and began acting friendly with Luo Binghe.
He had forgotten that it is literally in Luo Binghe’s code to detest Shen Qingqiu.
Of course, Shen Qingqiu isn’t claiming this is some larger plot from Luo Binghe’s side. He properly isn’t even fully aware of why he did it. At this point in time Luo Binghe doesn’t even remember having met Shen Qingqiu before. And he definitely has yet to find out that Shen Qingqiu is behind all his misery from before the mansion.
Luo Binghe has yet to find any reason to hate him. If he had, he would not have risked his own life on so many occasions to save Shen Qingqiu’s.
Instead, it is likely something much simpler. Luo Binghe took his glasses on a whim when keeping him from dying back then. Maybe he did forget to return the glasses back at the Killer’s hut.
But at some point he remembered. At some point he found that watching Shen Qingqiu flounder around, blind and disabled, was worth the amusement. That he enjoyed seeing this person, that he is predisposed to hate, being vulnerable and weak. That even while he is too kind to leave this distasteful scum villain of a senior to his death, at least he can get some entertainment.
Really, it is all Shen Qingqiu’s own fault that he forgot Luo Binghe and him are meant to be nothing but enemies.
He has no excuse for why it feels like someone reached into his chest and pulled out his heart only to replace it with a block of ice.
It's just...
He had truly been enjoying his and Luo Binghe's comradery...
“Senior, I am truly sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen. If there is anything I can do to make you forgive me, please tell me.” Luo Binghe says. He might have been talking for a while, but Shen Qingqiu wasn’t listening.
Now he is back in the present. He calmly looks at Luo Binghe as he lifts his hands. With stiff fingers he grabs him by the wrists. There is resistance at first when he calmly pushes Luo Binghe's arms away.
"What does Luo Binghe mean? There is clearly nothing to forgive. As you said, you simply forgot."
Hearing Shen Qingqiu's words, Luo Binghe does not look reassured in the slightest. In fact, he looks more stricken, as if Shen Qingqiu hadn't just let him off easy. For some reason he is even paler and he opens his mouth to speak. Likely trying to give another excuse.
Shen Qingqiu turn his back to him.
He limps back until he can sit down by the edge of the wardrobe. He places himself right by the strobe of light coming from the hallway, trying to find the least painful position he can manage. Then he brings forth the note he was going to show Luo Binghe.
"What... What is Senior doing...?" Luo Binghe haltingly asks. Standing by himself in the dark he somehow looks smaller and more lost than Shen Qingqiu has ever seen him.
"Seeing as I am still a burden, I will have to rely on Luo Binghe to find the loose rock the note mentioned. Meanwhile, since I got my glasses back, I will be just fine reading any future diary pages by myself," Shen Qingqiu explains. He wasn't going to say more than that, but in the end he can't hold back a final comment. "That must certainly be a relief for Luo Binghe. I know you didn't particularly care for these pages."
Luo Binghe looks as if he has been hit. Shen Qingqiu should be feeling satisfied like this, but he honestly just feels empty. Maybe a bit disappointed. It doesn't really matter. As Binghe hesitantly goes over to pick up his dropped crowbar, Shen Qingqiu returns to the note in his hand.
"Oh god. I am so sorry. I didn't mean to. It was all an accident, I swear! I didn't know it was even there! I heard the crunch and I immediately stopped what I was doing, but it was too late. There was nothing I could do. How do I tell him? How can I possibly tell him? He trusted me with it and now it is like this! I haven't been able to make myself go out to the forest since it happened. I am sorry. I am so, so very sorry."
Now that he again has his glasses, he is able to see the two darker spots on the page. The paper more stiff. Like someone spilled water on it. He just stares at the words on the page. Not really registering what they mean.
None of this is real anyway.
He had known that the story of the diary would at one point turn unpleasant. He even had his suspicions it would be something akin to this. No reason to act surprised. It is just a coincidence he had to reach the bad parts when already in a bad mood.
Rotten luck and all that.
For a second, Shen Qingqiu worries that some trap will activate and something horrible will happen. But as he remembers that Luo Binghe is immune to permanent injury, he returns to his detached state.
Luo Binghe brings his arm back out safely, holding a folded piece of paper. He brings it over for Shen Qingqiu to see, but then something small falls out from between the folds.
Luo Binghe Picks it up. It reveals itself to be a key. A very small and fine key. Clearly not made for any heavy doors or solid chests.
It does appear to be the perfect size for the safe in the office.
Luo Binghe looks towards Shen Qingqiu, excitement in his eyes. Whatever expression he finds on Shen Qingqiu's face is quick to kill it off, though. Instead, as he walks over, he sits down on his knees, a respectful distance between them as he hands over the paper.
Shen Qingqiu folds it out and they find it is another kid drawing.
[DRAWING]
There is nothing that immediately stands out to him. It is likely the same drawing as the one mentioned in the note, the depiction of a woman, child and cat making it obvious. What use this drawing can be to them is an entirely different matter though.
Shen Qingqiu keeps thinking of the locked chest in the servants bedroom. It had a cat, a mushroom and a heart scratched into it. That is two out of three symbols that match with the drawing. The cat being obvious and the mushrooms matching the basket the maid is holding.
Now, for the heart he can't immediately see anything that fits. And even if he did, he is not sure how any of it would fit the number order of the lock. If the drawing is actually a hint, then there is something else he needs to figure out the numbers.
As he muses over the puzzle, Luo Binghe speaks up.
"Senior, I would like to go back to the office. I feel like there has to be something of use in that safe."
"Hmm," Shen Qingqiu hums in agreement, his attention still on the drawing. He makes no move to get up, mostly seeing as he isn't quite able to thanks to his arm and leg.
Luo Binghe also doesn't immediately move. He stays kneeling, staring at Shen Qingqiu who refuses to turn his head his way. After a long enough pause, with tension thick enough to get stuck in their throats, he realizes he won't be getting what he seeks. He stands back up and looks down at Shen Qingqiu with eyes concealed by the darkness.
"I will grab a candle first," he says, voice low, as he leaves the room.
Once Luo Binghe is in the hallway, Shen Qingqiu lowers the drawing with a sigh. He has no idea how he is supposed to act. This was a wake up call, a reveal that made it clear he has not lived up to the role of the scum villain which he is meant to play. It has been such a long time since he behaved like the original goods that now it feels all wrong to do so. He had no problem with it when they just left the mansion. So why does he suddenly want to scratch off his skin and reshuffle his organs when dealing with Luo Binghe?
With another annoyed sigh, he puts the drawing in his pocket. That is when he feels something else that he didn't expect. He pulls it out and finds it is the picture he took from the office.
Now wearing his glasses, he can see each person with perfect clarity. It is immediately clear that these are workers of the mansion, though they all appear to be higher rank than the common maid or gardening boy.
Out of everyone, there are two people he recognizes. They stand side by side, one wearing a form fitting dress and the other a black vest over a cotton shirt and trousers. Though instead of looking at their child with disdain, they now look towards the photographer.
The woman's expression is still full of contempt. This time though, the man appears more natural. Fitting much better in with the rest of his colleagues.
Below the image is written out the names of each person. The order of the names matching with the order of the people. As expected, Shen Qingqiu does not recognize most of them, but one stands out.
The final name must be that of the recognized man, him standing as the last person in the line. Which means the name before his must be that of his wife. But noticeable, her name is the only one scratched over. Thin red lines going back and forth until it is impossible to read what it says underneath.
Shen Qingqiu honestly doesn't know what that means. But it feels like this isn't a random coincidence. He is finding hints that didn't exist in his first playthrough and they must add something to the story. If only he could figure out what it is...
He isn't given more time to consider. Luo Binghe returns and this time he doesn't try to placate Shen Qingqiu. He doesn't even question what the other is looking at, quietly helping him up. Shen Qingqiu pockets the photo and then throws his good arm over Luo Binghe's shoulder. Luo Binghe hesitates for only another second before they are on their way.
It is easy to go back the way they came. With the map from earlier, they are no longer really in any danger of getting lost. Shen Qingqiu mostly zones out, letting Luo Binghe lead. Feeling his skin so close to his, his itchy skin and rustling stomach makes a return. He really wants to be anywhere other than here. He needs time to figure out how he feels about this. Whether he needs to lay a new plan or stay with Luo Binghe.
It may seem like he doesn't have much of a choice at the moment. If he could be alone long enough without any disturbances, he might come up with an alternative. Luo Binghe has certainly shown teaming up with him does come with certain risks. The challenge is that Shen Qingqiu isn't quite able to determine what exactly those risks are yet.
If he stays with Luo Binghe, will it worsen? Or since Luo Binghe has now been caught, will he play nice from now on? He has no reason to go beyond subtle manipulations as of yet, so maybe Shen Qingqiu should play it safe and stay with him?
Really, when he truly thinks about it, haven't the good greatly outweighed the bad when teaming up with Luo Binghe? Isn't Luo Binghe saving his life time and time again worth more than one case of not returned glasses?
Why is Shen Qingqiu so stuck on this? It makes no sense! Ning Yingying directly stabbed him to death and he was able to forgive her relatively easily! So why does what Luo Binghe did feel so much more personal?
Shen Qingqiu needs to get himself together. It doesn't matter, they will just have to open the safe in the office, avoid it's trap, get to the library and then find the secret passage to the upper floor-
Suddenly Luo Binghe stops. Just a bit further ahead is the door to the office, but like a rock, Luo Binghe refuses to move. He stares straight ahead for a second, taking a deep breath before he turns his head to face Shen Qingqiu.
"Senior. I really think we need to talk," he says, his voice sounding more open and vulnerable than Shen Qingqiu has heard in a long time. Maybe not since Luo Binghe thanked him for saving his life back in the shed?
"I don't see what we have to talk about," Shen Qingqiu does not return his gaze, trying to keep his eyes on the office door.
"But I do. And I don't want us to continue with bad blood between us."
"Luo Binghe, really, this isn't necesa-"
"I'm sorry Senior! I made a mistake and it is solely my fault. I shouldn't have done it and you have every right to be mad at me," Binghe exclaims. He is just repeating himself from earlier, but it feels as if there is more to his words this time.
"Binghe..." Shen Qingqiu sighs, lowering his head. Why does it feel like his heart is being squeezed empty?
"If you need to yell at me, then yell. If you need to hit me, then hit me. If you want me to apologize again and again, then I will do so until I have no voice left. I am really, truly sorry Senior."
Is that a waver in Luo Binghe's voice? Shen Qingqiu must be imagining it. If he were to actually look at Luo Binghe, there is no way that the other would actually be crying over this.
Closing his eyes, he gathers the last of the steely resolve he has left from the original Shen Qingqiu. He needs to make it clear where the two of them stand.
"I don't want any of that. It doesn't matter. I don't understand why you never returned my glasses. You don't understand why I keep focusing on the diary pages. Maybe we both just need to accept that we don't understand each other as well as we thought," he says, trying to keep most of the bitterness from seeping through.
He doesn't think he quite manages it in the end.
"Senior..." Luo Binghe whispers, his voice so heartbroken that Shen Qingqiu almost feels tears coming to his own eyes. But he isn't wrong, so they both just need to man up and get over this-!
A sound ahead.
They both go still.
There is no doubt that it came from the office.
Not the sound of heavy boots. Or bloody axes. This is lighter. Rustling. Like someone rummaging through papers and shelves.
Neither Shen Qingqiu nor Luo Binghe speak another word. Instead they slowly and, oh so quietly, move forward. Once they are by the door, Luo Binghe releases Shen Qingqiu. With his arms free he holds the crowbar at the ready. Not too gently he pushes the door open.
Shen Qingqiu follows behind Luo Binghe as well as he can manage. As the door hits the wall, the person messing around immediately turns to face them with wide eyes. Putting a leg in front of her, her arms raised at the ready, they are faced with the masked girl wearing a very recognizable school uniform.
Finally they managed to catch up to Liu Mingyan.

Omg, this is so cute, I love this 💕 Poor SQQ who just want to be able to see again and baby Binge who just want their cute date without being distracted by stolen glasses 😔
I love the way you have drawn them reading notes together, both of them slightly harrowed from their experiences and just trying to find the way out.
I especially love the way you have drawn Binghe's curls, it really makes me want to write SQQ dragging his fingers through it.
Thank you for drawing this, I don't have words for how happy it makes me <333

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 20 - Lost Found
"Senior!" He suddenly whispers, pulling Shen Qingqiu out of his thoughts. He moves them to the side, pressing them both against the wall. A second after Shen Qingqiu realizes why. Intimately recognizable footsteps, followed by the scrape of metal. There is no doubt who is coming their way.
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
Binghe is in a bad mood.
Furrowed brows and downturned lips. Not saying a single word. An aura of unhappiness thick enough that it sticks to the tongue. There really isn't any doubt about Binghe’s current emotional state.
It isn't that Shen Qingqiu is not aware of Binghe's temper. There exist many examples of his rage both in the novel and in the game. Binghe is quite an expressive guy, despite his skills with acting. Shen Qingqiu is just surprised by how different it feels when spending time with him directly instead of reading about him as a character.
Whether happy or angry, unless he has a reason to hide it, he wears his emotions on his sleeves. Which only makes it more awkward when Shen Qingqiu still has to lean on the guy while he looks more murderous than the Killer.
The problem is that Shen Qingqiu is certain he is the last person who can cheer Binghe up right now.
Right after the earlier assault, the shock had left his thoughts shaken and muddy. This served to strengthen Binghe's worry, making him look over Shen Qingqiu, afraid the fall had worsened the injuries.
He was not wrong to check, even while unable to do anything about them.
The bandages on Shen Qingqius arm, still soaked, were clinging to his skin to the point of scraping the burnt flesh. The bandages on his foot were also drenched, but besides water, they were also reddened from blood. Of course, in both instances this had already been caused by Shen Qingqiu's near drowning experience prior, but the meeting between harsh rock and vulnerable flesh had caused it to worsen.
The skin of his arm had now split in multiple places, droplets of blood running down the white cloth. How the foot looked, neither Binghe nor Shen Qingqiu dared to look. But even with Binghe's careful touch, it felt too loose, like if he wanted to, he could just pluck it right off Shen Qingqiu's leg.
The power of video game painkillers should never be underestimated. No way Shen Qingqiu could stay this composed otherwise. But every time another shock was aimed at his wounds, the effect of the one pill still in his system ran the risk of losing its effect.
It still held out. For now. Shen Qingqiu had just needed time to gather himself after another surge of suffering. Which meant Binghe was free to see the terrible state of his battered body.
And it was right after that, that Binghe saw the note. From there, there was nothing Shen Qingqiu could say or do to manage the situation.
No, this time it wasn't a trap. But that didn't matter to Binghe.
Shen Qingqiu had been out of his sight for a second. Something bad had happened. And then there was another page from that diary.
To describe Binghe as pissed was an understatement.
He hadn't shouted. Most likely because of the echo of the hallway. He hadn't left Shen Qingqiu to squirm on the ground. Binghe is too kind for that. He even read the note out loud, its content containing such a different mood to theirs, it was almost laughable.
He had then torn it into pieces. Afterwards he eyed the pocket where Shen Qingqiu kept the diary, his want clearly written on his face. Likely the only reason he didn't destroy the entire book was because he didn't want to risk the struggle of wrestling it from Shen Qingqiu's grasp.
Instead he stomped over to one of the lights, making quick work of releasing the candle, before coming back to hand it to Shen Qingqiu. Silently, he had picked up the crowbar, looking for a second like he just wanted to release a series of smashes against the brick wall.
He didn't. He picked up Shen Qingqiu and without further delay, he directed them through the hallways, following the route they had chosen together.
Okay, listen! Shen Qingqiu understands that he has rotten luck. This session has done nothing but prove that time and time again. But as he has already said to Binghe, it is not like he is trying to get himself killed here. He really does not have a single suicidal bone in his body, he swears!
Honestly, this might just be punishment for Shen Qingqiu taking Ning Yingying's place for the tutorial. He was never meant to leave the mansion that early and the game has only confirmed that since. Really, what has he gotten out of this session besides pain and suffering??
Well, besides the chance to hang out with Binghe... Which... If looking past the pain and suffering, Shen Qingqiu wouldn't mind doing so again...
Even when its angry Binghe, Shen Qingqiu can still appreciate his company. He isn't his favorite character for nothing! Even when they are fighting, Binghe is going out of his way to take care of him! Who cares about anger issues, when the person with the issues still acts like a decent person! Only Binghe could simultaneously lack control and stay focused on the goal like this! Really a man to admire!
And speaking of goals, while Shen Qingqiu is appreciating Binghe in his mind, this is when they stumble upon a door unlike any door either of them have seen so far.
As Shen Qingqiu looks upon metal forged into intricate patterns and decorated with gold and silver, there is no doubt in his mind that they stand before the entrance to the library.
The final path towards returning to the main part of the game. The final key that can turn this rotten session into worthwhile progress.
"This looks just like the woman from the painting..." Binghe mutters, going closer to inspect the details of the door. He is not wrong, though with a few key differences.
As Binghe said, shaped into the metal is a depiction of the woman from the painting. This time standing by herself. Behind her stretches a landscape of flowery fields, leading towards a blooming treeline. Her hair is falling loosely around her shoulders, her dress much simpler, though it suits her just as well.
The atmosphere around her figure is quite different from the painting though.
Whether it is because expressions are harder to catch when forging metal, she appears much softer in this depiction of her. Her muscles are much more discreet, the authority switched out with affection as she looks gently downwards towards the bundle in her arms.
But instead of holding her pregnant belly, she is embracing a bouquet of lotus flowers, her stomach entirely flat.
When comparing the painting with the door, even though they are clearly the same person, the feeling they give is like they are two different people. One dominant and strong. Another docile and vulnerable. And still, neither depiction feels fake or strange. Like this is just another human being, varied and full of contrasts.
Shen Qingqiu releases himself from Binghe, so the other can inspect the door unhindered. Leaning against the wall, he observes Binghes exploration, keeping an eye on his hands, as they glide across shiny metal.
The door stands clear as if it is still being polished every day. A clear contrast to the dust and dirt that cover every other part of the mansion. Notably, there are no handles or other obvious ways to open the door. Binghe pokes and prods at different corners, feeling out the patterns to locate any secret keyhole.
As his hand brushes past the bouquet of lotus', Shen Qingqiu is extra attentive. But in the end he does not push back hard enough and he moves on none-the-wiser.
Shen Qingqiu lets out a dissatisfied sigh, but it isn't Binghe's fault. Once they get their hands on the 'key', he will have to think of a way to guide Binghe to find the hidden compartment. For now it is not necessary and Shen Qingqiu would rather not come off as suspicious by immediately revealing every secret he knows.
Binghe does manage to find another note. Which sadly mostly serves to sour his mood after his brief distraction of curiosity. But keeping to their agreement, he obediently reads it out.
"It's her, it is definitely her! Ms. _______ is definitely his mom! I realized they have the exact same sharp eyes. Her, out of everyone, having a hidden child must certainly be some form of divine fate. I just feel so sad for the boy. He rarely speaks of his parents, but when he does, I do not like what I hear. I say nothing, of course. I think it would just make him sad. I have also lost the kitten, though I haven't told him that either. It ran away somewhere and even with M_______'s help I can't find it anywhere."
This time Binghe doesn't rip the note into pieces, though Shen Qingqiu can see on his face that he considers it. Instead he sighs deeply in exasperation, handing it to Shen Qingqiu.
Shen Qingqiu on the other hand is getting a bad feeling about the notes.
Not in the same way as Binghe, convinced they are out to kill him horribly. No, rather it is the content of the notes that leaves him worried.
This is simultaneously lore that he already knows and which is completely new. The relation between the child and his parents, Shen Qingqiu is already well aware of. This note only serves to confirm his knowledge of their troubled relationship. But the added bits with the maid, those parts he does not like.
It is only a question of time before something goes wrong. This is a horror game after all. And there are very few happy endings to find in a horror game like this.
"Senior, we should keep going," Binghe says, taking hold of Shen Qingqiu again.
Shen Qingqiu follows without complaint. He is deep in thought, trying to puzzle together what he can learn from these notes that he didn't know after finishing the game. It could be something super small, seemingly insignificant until the last note connects everything together.
There must be a point to them, even if it is still not clear what that point could be.
While he considers the diary pages, he trusts Binghe to lead them to the storage room. With the map they found earlier, it is much easier for Binghe to navigate the twists and turns on their way. As they get closer to their destination, they reach a crossroad, but then Binghe suddenly freezes.
Carefully, Binghe moves them forwards. Finding a space between the hanging candles, he blows out the one Shen Qingqiu is holding. Now covered by darkness, unless the Killer walks right past them, he might not notice their presence.
Crouching down, Binghe uses his hands to cover both their mouths to silence their breathing. Both staring intently, they wait on the Killer with bated breaths.
Slowly, step by step, the Killer nears. Shen Qingqiu can feel sweat dripping down his back and goosebumps along his flesh. Binghe's hand against his face is clammy and he can feel his body is spent, as if ready to pull them up in case they have to run.
The Killer steps into their view. Standing by the same crossroad. He looks each way, deciding which one to choose.
It is a 50/50 chance. If the Killer turns their way, they will have to run. There is no way he won't see them when passing by, even in the low light. If he goes the other way, they can breathe freely and continue on their way. It is all up to what the Killer chooses.
Shen Qingqiu is cursed by rotten luck. That has been proven time and time again since he woke up in this deadly game.
But even rotten luck can't compete with the power of the hero halo. A halo that Binghe wears with great dignity.
The Killer turns his back to them. He slowly walks away, allowing them to live for just a bit longer.
Relief loosens their muscles, Binghe releasing both of their mouths, even with the Killer not entirely gone yet. They will just wait another minute to be sure they are safe before moving on.
"Senior, I don't think we are far from the storage room," Binghe whispers, voice so quiet that Shen Qingqiu has to lean closer to hear.
"Once we are inside, if we stay quiet, we should have enough time to find the drawing," he whispers back. As they are nearing their goal, he can't help but feel excitement at what they might find there.
"We should also check for other supplies in there. A storage room out to hold-"
CRASH
Shen Qingqiu and Binghe both jump at the sudden racket coming from behind them. With wide eyes, they both look at each other as they recognize the noise.
It is the exact same sound of the candlesticks falling apart as they heard from outside the male servant's bedchamber.
They aren't given any time to consider how to react when the Killer reappears at the end of the hallway.
No way he won't find them this time. They have to move. Now!
"We have to get to the storage room!" Shen Qingqiu urges. Having the key to the room, they might be able to lock the Killer out. Even if they can't, the room will be the most likely to contain any hiding spots.
Binghe doesn't make him say it twice. One moment to the next, he pulls them both up and they are running.
The second they are out of their hiding place, a yell can be heard from the Killer. immediately his heavy steps become faster as he gives chase.
They aren't far from the storage room. They also have quite the head start. Even with Shen Qingqiu slowing them down, their chances of escaping look good. And Binghe has proven more than enough times that he is resilient when running from the Killer, despite the extra baggage.
They run around the corner and they see the door of the storage room. On the ground is the fallen candleholder, the candle left broken in two. Binghe passes it with no second thought, but suddenly Shen Qingqiu tries to put a brake on their flight.
The flame of the candle is still burning. The area around it lit up. And close by, almost right beside the fire, lays another note.
"Binghe, wait, we have to-" Shen Qingqiu tries. Binghe is quick to pause at Shen Qingqiu's hesitation, but as he sees what he is pointing towards his face darkens.
"We don't have time for this Senior! We have to get to safety!" Binghe yells out.
"I know, but if we don't get it now-!" Shen Qingqiu doesn't have time to explain. He can feel Binghe pulling him forward, though his eyes never leave the note.
The note is lying too close to the candle. Slowly, it is rolling closer, reaching the edges of the page, its flame dancing from the movement.
The fire excitedly reaches out to the dry and flammable paper.
Binghe is moving them forward, but as Shen Qingqiu sees the tiniest speck of smoke rise from the note, he makes a snap decision.
Throwing himself out of Binghe's grasp, he reaches and yanks the note away from the candle. He manages to turn his body so he doesn't land on any of his injuries. They still wail at the sudden act, but it is much more manageable than from his other falls.
Page in hand, he tries to push himself back up. He is quick to find his position too awkward, his burned arm uncooperative and his broken leg unmovable. Remembering the Killer drawing near, he has a moment of panic before two hands grab him from behind, dragging him back up.
"Why don't you ever listen to me!" Binghe yells out as he is finally able to get them to the door. Having to drop his crowbar and release Shen Qingqiu, the urgency of their situation makes his hands clumsy as he pulls the key from his pocket. Inserting it into the keyhole, he has to try a couple of times before he is able to turn it and unlock the door.
As they enter, the room is entirely dark. Only the light coming from the hallway reveals a few boxes spread around and a huge wardrobe in the other end of the room.
Binghe turns to lock the door behind them, but drops the key. With a curse, he bows down to find it, but is interrupted by the howl of the Killer.
He is closer than they thought. They have no time.
Shen Qingqiu is looking around the room, trying to calculate which hiding spots are least likely to get them found. He does not like the odds of any of the boxes, their best hope being the wardrobe.
Binghe has the same thought. Abandoning the key, he hurries them to the wardrobe, throwing it open. Seeing the insides, Shen Qingqiu's heart sinks.
Despite his hope, the wardrobe is not empty. A couple of boxes takes up its space, leaving only just enough for one person to awkwardly press inside. While the boxes aren't stacked high, there just isn't enough space for two people to stand.
Binghe immediately enters, which leaves Shen Qingqiu to quickly find a hiding spot for himself. Looking nearby, his only option is a few boxes right besides the wardrobe. With him hiding there, he and Binghe might just have a chance to survive.
Then Binghe surprises him. Before Shen Qingqiu can move, Binghe grabs hold of him once more and pulls him in. The door is closed behind them, but with no clear spot for his feet, Shen Qingqiu stumbles inside. Unable to keep his balance is about to fall. At the last moment Binghe catches him around his waist.
In the next second the Killer bursts into the room.
Their situation could not be much worse. Once inside, the Killer slows down, carefully inspecting the room. His own shadow covers his front, not even the demonic grin of his mask visible as he steps around the room. The axe is now resting on his shoulder. Easier to swing once he finds his prey.
Shen Qingqiu and Binghe are in the worst position imaginable.
Shen Qingqiu, unable to find a way to properly stand, is only held up by Binghe carrying his weight. With his good hand on Binghe's shoulder and the other leaning against the back of the wardrobe, it is everything he can do not to fall out from Binghe's grasp. Binghe at the same time has to keep both of his hands around Shen Qingqiu to keep him up. This leaves Shen Qingqiu awkwardly hanging sideways, his good foot crookedly placed down with his other leg stiffly raised.
A sliver of the wardrobe door stands open, allowing them to just barely see the Killer moving around the room.
The Killer takes his time. Walking towards each box and piece of furniture, he attentively looks them over before moving over to the next. It goes on for so long, that Shen Qingqiu would worry about the strain on Binghe's arms, except there are so far no signs of him tiring.
The Killer reaches the closet and slowly looks it over. Shen Qingqiu can feel his breath quicken, fearing the Killer can look inside through the sliver like they are looking out. His mask still shadowed, he can't even see the direction of his eyes. Whether they are turned towards them or not.
The Killer lifts his axe from his shoulder. Unhurriedly, as if it is just another chore, he raises it above his head in a stance Shen Qingqiu knows very well by now. He can feel Binghe's grip tighten, pressing them closer, while he himself is unable to look away.
The axe goes higher and higher, reaching far above the Killers head, before it pauses in it's trek. Holding it there for a moment, it is as if time itself is holding its breath.
The axe swings down.
With a loud crack, It smashes through the boxes right beside the wardrobe. Immediately they fall to pieces, unable to stand the sharp weight splitting them apart. The wood bursts until there are only splinters. Nothing is left standing after the axe is done with them.
The moment the axe swung, Shen Qingqiu was certain he was going to die. He feels his entire body jump in shock as the boxes are smashed to pieces instead.
This shock becomes his downfall.
His hanging foot slams against the inside of the wardrobe. Only covered by wet bandages, the sound is not loud enough to get through the noise of outside destruction. But the sudden agonising surge of pain that runs through Shen Qingqiu's leg, scraping and tearing at his nerve endings makes him unable to keep his agony inside. Opening his mouth, he can't keep in his howl of pain, struggling free from his throat.
Shen Qingqiu can't cover his mouth with his hands. He would immediately lose his balance. Neither can Binghe move from the embrace he has Shen Qingqiu in without the other falling.
Shen Qingqiu's cry rings out, but before the sound can leave the safety of the wardrobe, something hot and moist covers it, swallowing the wail.
Shen Qingqiu never closed his eyes. That's why he sees it with wide eyes as Binghe's mouth covers his own. Warm lips presses against his, the movement unhesitant and quick. Their teeth clack together and without control, Binghe's tongue enters his mouth.
Binghe's eyes are closed, pressed together tightly, distress and panic clear in his features. But then they smoothen out, turning softer once it is clear that nothing reached outside ears.
Shen Qingqiu is frozen in time. Unable to look away, neither he nor Binghe move their mouths. He can feel his own tongue against Binghe's, but the entire situation is so outrageous that moving away is the last thought on his mind.
His only thought is one long continuous scream. He does not have a single idea what Binghe is thinking.
The Killer is completely unaware of the scandal happening inside the wardrobe. Having destroyed the box, he did not find his prey hiding inside or behind it. He lets his frustration show by snarling at the pieces of wood, kicking them away. That is when he turns around, stomping out of the room.
For a while, neither Shen Qingqiu nor Binghe moves. But then finally Shen Qingqiu's mind allows for something else than screaming. Pushing against Binghe's shoulder, the other’s eyes snap open as if he is just realising what they are doing. In the next second, both of them find themselves outside the wardrobe.
What?! What, what, what??? What the fuck just happened, why would Binghe---!! How did they even find themselves in such a situation in the first place, none of this--!!
It makes no sense, none of this makes sense, this game makes no sense, the Killer makes no sense, especially Binghe makes no god damn fucking sense, what the actual fuck!!!?
How is he even supposed to act after they just-! They just kissed?! It's not like the kiss is his fault, Binghe was the one that kissed him, why would Binghe kiss him, he really is starting to hate the word kiss--!
"Senior, I am so, so sorry!" Binghe interrupts his thoughts.
In his embarrassment, Shen Qingqiu had instinctively turned away. As he turns back, he realises he has never seen Binghe appear so flustered. A blush has spread across his face and he is holding his arms as if he doesn't know whether to step towards Shen Qingqiu or give him space.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't feel any better himself. His face feels heated, his mouth still moist from-! From what just happened--!! He just wants to lay down face first and scream into the floor. Instead he hides behind his sleeves as well as he can, unable to face Binghe for more than a couple of seconds at a time.
"Please don't be mad Senior, but I had no idea what to do! If the Killer found us, I wouldn't be able to get us away in time. So I panicked!" Binghe keeps apologizing, his voice becoming more and more shrill.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't trust his voice enough yet to answer. But his silence only seems to make Binghe more distressed.
"I promise it was an accident, I didn't mean anything by it!! If Senior really hates me for it, please, you, you, you can punch me or kick me, but please don't be mad, I was so scared we would get found!"
Unconsciously Binghe steps forward, then seems to realise it and immediately takes three steps back. Turning his back to Shen Qingqiu, he hides his face in his hands as apologies endlessly flow from his mouth.
Shen Qingqiu can't stand to hear it, so he forces control over his voice.
"Binghe has nothing to apologize for. This Senior understands you only did it for our survival. It didn't mean anything," he says, not a tremble to hear in his voice. His blush is harder to fight down, but with Binghe's back towards him, that can be ignored. "We will forget this ever happened, so Binghe doesn't have to feel bad about it."
Peeking behind himself, Binghe's eyes appear so young and innocent as he checks whether Shen Qingqiu means his words. Confirming it to be no lie, he shallowly nods, before turning away again.
"O-okay... If Senior says so, we will forget the whole thing," he shakily answers. He straightens his back and breathes in, trying to calm his wild nerves. Still not yet ready to face Shen Qingqiu, he tries to gather his thoughts as they run around like feral beasts in his mind.
Shen Qingqiu feels relief as Binghe agrees. He is so ready to forget about this and act like it never happened. No reason to think about it ever again, aha! It was nothing and meant nothing and will stay nothing! Why feel embarrassed about nothing that happened, right? Right!
"Then- then let's move on, we got the- the drawing to find!" Shen Qingqiu hurries to say, stumbling over his words. He remembers the note in his hand and steps towards Binghe. He will need him to read it and then they will find the drawing and then they will check the rest of the room for supplies and then they will-
He forgets his bad leg. As he steps forward, he just manages to not put down his full weight onto it, barely avoiding another surge of agony. Instead he careens forward, falling into Binghe's back.
Binghe, who is still distracted by his racing thoughts, doesn't notice Shen Qingqiu fall. He is shocked when he suddenly feels the other crashing into his back. As he feels a hand take a firm hold of his behind, he freezes.
In order to keep his balance, Shen Qingqiu takes hold of the first things his hands land on. He feels Binghe stiffen underneath his grasp and another wave of heat and mortification hits him as he realises where his hands are placed.
Then that feeling pauses.
Something hard is inside Binghe's back pocket.
The world narrows down.
Slowly, he slips his hand inside the pocket, pulling out the object.
Binghe does nothing to stop him.
Looking at the item, it takes Shen Qingqiu a few seconds to fully register what it is.
Then he folds it open.
And put it on.
For the first time in a very long time, Shen Qingqiu can see Luo Binghe's guilty expression with perfectly clear eyes. Not a single edge of blurriness to his vision.
There is no doubt that this is Shen Qingqiu's lost glasses.

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 19 - Forest Meeting
Turning around a bit too quickly, Binghe's eyes fall upon the open frame in Shen Qingqiu's hand. He reaches across the table and Shen Qingqiu holds it out for Binghe to grab the note. As he does, the tiniest metal key falls from between the note and picture, landing on the table with a clatter.  "Eh?"
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
The painting depicts that of a man and a woman standing together.
The man is what first stands out when entering the room. His clothes mark his high status with a tailored black cloak and matching trousers. The entire outfit is decorated with details of red, simultaneously making him appear fashionable as well as looking like droplets of blood.
Though the reason he is noticeable is not his outfit, but rather the state of his face.
The painting appears to still be in good condition. The frame is golden and shiny as if it is still being cleaned every day. The colored paint is vibrant as if it was just painted on. The canvas strong and flat.
Only his face has become a rotten unrecognizable mess. The paint and cloth molding together like a piece of spoiled meat.
The combination of the spoiled face with the bloodied outfit makes a chill run down the spine of anyone looking upon him.
In contrast, the woman is bright and handsome. Her golden dress fall elegantly down her body, the painter having perfectly caught every wave of the material. Her long dark hair weaved together in an intricate pattern. Jewelry adorn her throat and dress, each gemstone looking as real as if they could be picked out of the painting.
What comes unexpected for a woman like this is the pure aura of strength that surrounds her.
Standing even taller than the man, her back is straight as she looks straight ahead. Her expression is confident and proud, an air of authority to it. There is nothing docile or submissive about her, even the muscles of her arms are visible even through the sleeves of her dress.
While both give quite different impressions, there is no doubt about their relationship as the man embraces the woman, who in turn is embracing her own stomach, heavy and round with child.
There is no doubt this is the lord and lady of the mansion that looks down upon those who enter this room.
Shen Qingqiu remembers this painting very clearly. In general, he tends to find the paintings in the mansion memorable, usually thanks to the beautiful artwork that would depict them in the game. Quite often they would also stand out having hidden secrets incorporated into them.
This one being no different. This painting being one step in the puzzle needed to get to the shortcut that Shen Qingqiu aims for.
His attention caught on the painting, he does not notice Binghe stepping up to him until a blanket suddenly is thrown over his head. He lets out a surprised "wha-?", which gets interrupted as Binghe immediately begins to rub him roughly with the blanket, the harsh movement an attempt to return warmth to Shen Qingqiu's freezing body.
Trying to wiggle out of Binghe’s grasp, Shen Qingqiu only manages to free his head from the blanket. Coming face to face with Binghe, the other’s expression is that of worry as he searches Shen Qingqiu's face for any signs of pain.
The blanket is made of rough wool, scratchy and definitely not made for drying. Binghe is careful not to rub harshly against Shen Qingqiu's burnt arm, but as he looks at the state of the bandages, he does not like what he sees. His careful work has turned into a drenched mess that must be painful against the reddened flesh.
The state of Shen Qingqiu’s foot looks even worse.
"What happened? How did the trap get triggered?" Binghe asks, his voice sounding lost.
At the question Shen Qingqiu suddenly remembers. He lifts his hand and the both of them stare down at the note he holds.
This... is so unreal... Shen Qingqiu remembers specifically falling down, barely able to keep his head above water. How in the world has the note not fallen to pieces?? It is just like the drawing in the forest, having been left out in the rain for hours, but easily readable. While the note is dripping with water and has a few smudges along some of the words, even Shen Qingqiu's blurry eyesight can see it is mostly still intact.
Silently Binghe takes the note out of his hand. He looks at it for a moment before he looks back at Shen Qingqiu.
Smack!
Harshly, Binghe hits the table with the note, leaving it there in a crumbled mess. His eyes are shooting lightning as he straightens his back, towering over Shen Qingqiu. Watching him with wide eyes, as Shen Qingqiu sees Binghe open his mouth to speak, he can already guess what he is about to say.
Trying to delay the inevitable, he hurries to interrupt.
"Okay, listen, I get it, but you have to understand, I had no idea it was a trap! The page was just laying there!"
"This is the second time you almost died from these notes, Senior! Don't you see you are just putting yourself in danger?!" Stepping closer, Binghe grabs the blanket around Shen Qingqiu, effectively trapping him. Shen Qingqiu isn’t even able to take a single step back, no space for breathing between them.
He understands that Binghe might still be in shock after what just happened, so he tries to argue to his rationality, tone reassuring in contrast to Binghe’s raised voice.
"I didn’t know it was dangerous. It looked no different from the notes in the bedrooms. Since none of those triggered any traps, I did not suspect this one would either. I couldn’t possibly know this one wasn’t safe."
"But why are we collecting the notes in the first place? In what way can they help us as we run for our lives? How can they be used to get us out of here?!"
"I don't know yet, but there must be something. Why else would they just be laying around?"
"Why does there need to be a reason for them laying around?!"
Trying to calm Binghe down, the last words hit Shen Qingqiu like a ball to the face. If it wasn't for Binghe's tight grip on the blanket, he would be stumbling back.
He knows. He knows this makes no sense for Binghe. That without the knowledge of all of this being a video game, Shen Qingqiu's behavior must appear illogical at best and downright suicidal at worst.
Even Shen Qingqiu is doubting the use of the notes, but why else would they be here? Why else would they constantly stumble upon them? Why else are some of them triggers for traps?
What is the point of them? What is the story? The lore? What can they tell that Shen Qingqiu doesn't already know? Why risk his life for them when he definitely knows the game can be beaten without reading a single page of the diary?
The thing is, Shen Qingqiu is a completionist. And as a completionist, it is just not in his blood to leave obvious collectables laying around when they aren't necessarily dangerous.
For a full minute, Binghe and Shen Qingqiu just stare at each other. Shen Qingqiu has no answer for Binghe's question, but neither is he willing to back down. Instead, he can only look at Binghe with tired eyes.
Without taking his eyes off Shen Qingqiu, Binghe reaches back and grabs the note. Uncrumbling it, he finally looks down. His eyes scan the words, before he reads it out loud.
"The most peculiar thing happened today! I was out collecting mushrooms and I met a little boy! Well, little might not be quite the right word, but his voice sounded young. When I first saw him it looked like he was speaking to himself, but then I found out it was just a little kitten! Once he heard me, he seemed scared at first, but after a few words he calmed down. I have always loved cats very much, so I asked to see the kitten. Once he showed me, I found it was hurt and quite sick. He asked that since I love cats, if there was anything I could do to help it. Of course I couldn't say no to that. So I took the kitten with me, promising to nurse it back to health"
Once he is finished reading, he once again leaves the note on the table. He removes the drenched blanket from Shen Qingqiu, throwing it to the side with a wet splat. He then turns around and wordlessly begins to look through the shelves.
Binghe might be sulking, but Shen Qingqiu on the other hand finally feels the intrigue.
Undoubtedly it was the Killer the maid met must have met. Her descriptions combined with what Shen Qingqiu already knows of the Killers background makes him certain. Though some parts are new.
Shen Qingqiu has no memory of a kitten mentioned when playing the game? If anything, he would expect the Killer to hurt animals as early signs of his murderous nature? But at least based on the maids' words, that is not the case?
Shen Qingqiu got to admit that his curiosity is piqued. Something must have happened between the Killer and the maid and now he is looking forward to finding out what it is.
If Binghe will be reading any more diary pages for him, that is.
Binghe is roughly opening each of the many shelves, digging through the papers before moving to the next shelf. His movement is harsh and irritated, but still, as Shen Qingqiu moves over to help him, he pushes a stool over, so he has somewhere to sit.
Shen Qingqiu can't help much with the papers without his glasses, so instead he looks at the desk. Quickly his eyes are caught by a picture frame which he picks up. The black and white picture depicts multiple men and women, standing side by side. They appear as if standing outside, but he finds it hard to make out the details. Underneath the image is a long line of text he has no chance of reading.
While he looks over the frame, Binghe moves from the shelves to the framed painting of the lord and lady. At the bottom there is a bronze plate with smudged writing on it. Binghe reaches out to try to clean the plate, when he somehow manages to push it back.
In surprise he steps back. The painting slides open, revealing a hidden metal safe behind it. Watching on, Shen Qingqiu is glad that Binghe found out how to open the painting without his help. Studying the safe, Binghe is quick to find it to be locked.
"I wonder if there could be anything of use inside of here," he mutters as he looks at the secure box.
With Binghe distracted, Shen Qingqiu returns his attention to the frame in his hand, turning it around. Opening it from the back, as he removes the wooden covering, he finds another piece of paper inside.
Looking up, Binghe is still focused on the safe. With how much Binghe dislikes the notes, Shen Qingqiu briefly considers not telling him about it. It is clear he won't get Binghe to understand their relevance, so it might be better to keep them for himself.
He would have gone with this thought if it wasn't for his lost glasses. Even if he were to hide the note for later, when would he be able to read it? He has to rely on Binghe for such a simple task, even as it only seems to grow friction between them.
With a sigh he calls him over. "Binghe, I found another note. Will you take a look?"
"Eh?"
A slip of paper is tied to it with a string and as Binghe picks it up, it reads 'Storage' in bold letters. Turning it this and that way, it is clear it will not fit in the safe, even without the note to declare where it belongs. Turning his attention to the note he looks it over.
"It is another diary page," he says, quite the obvious statement.
Of course it is another diary page, they have been doing nothing but finding diary pages down here! But Shen Qingqiu can read between the lines. Instead of letting Binghe restart the conversation of the usefulness of the pages, he encourages him to instead read it out loud.
Binghe sighs, but obliges.
"At first I thought the boy had been sneaking into the mansion, but he told me he lives in a hut with his parents. He refuses to tell me who they are or even his name. He also says he isn't allowed to go near the mansion. It sounds like he is very alone, which I find sad for him. But I am glad I then get to keep him company. Today he even gave me a drawing of him, the kitten and me! It was so very sweet. I don't want to risk anyone finding the drawing, though. I am afraid it will get him in trouble with his parents. I have hidden it in the storage room. I know one of the bricks is loose after cleaning up there. No one will suspect me of hiding anything in there.”
Eyeing the key in Binghe’s hand, Shen Qinggiu feels like he just solved a challenging puzzle, but before it turning frustrating. They definitely have to check the storage room for that drawing, it must be of some use!
“I wonder if the drawing is still there,” he says, trying to keep his tone wondering and not too excited. Based on Binghe’s look, he does not believe he is quite successful.
“Senior, I have to ask again. Just what will we get out of this goose chase?”
“We were able to use the drawing at the hut as a map. Who knows what we could use this one for?”
“Being able to use one drawing doesn’t mean we can use another!”
“If we aim to go to the storage room anyway, we might as well check?”
“We don’t even know where the storage room is, Senior.”
“Binghe,” Shen Qingqiu tries not to sigh. “If we had found only the key without the note, would you have been this resistant to finding the room?”
Binghe goes deadly quiet. First looking down at the key in his hand, then lifting his head to look directly into Shen Qingqiu’s eyes, he pockets the key.
“Senior is right. Without the note I would be no less afraid about going there than any other place here. But now, instead I worry that Senior will get further hurt if we go there. Is that really so wrong of me?”
Hearing those words, Shen Qingqiu can’t help but soften. Calmly picking up the thrown page, he adds it to the diary he keeps on his person.
“I appreciate Binghe’s concern, but I ask that you put some trust in me. I am not suicidal and I have learned from past mistakes.” Taking a second to think, he tries for a compromise. “If anything, once we are there, you can look for the drawing? That way you don’t have to worry about me falling into another trap?”
Binghe considers the suggestion. Meanwhile, Shen Qingqiu also thinks that it will be safer in general if Binghe just picks up the notes from now on. With his no-deaths-shield there is no risk of him burning to a crisp or drowning to death like Shen Qingqiu.
Finally, after heavy contemplation, Binghe nods.
“That would make me feel better,” he agrees. “If Senior promises not to pick up any more notes, but instead leaves them for me, then I agree we can look for the storage room next.”
“Then that is a deal,” Shen Qingqiu says. He offers his hand for a handshake, which Binghe hesitantly gives. After one shake, Shen Qingqiu feels satisfied and ready to search the rest of the office.
From here they find little of interest. Shen Qingqiu brings the picture from the frame with him, deciding not to disturb Binghe with it for now. While they have reached an agreement, he doesn’t want to push Binghe’s allowances just yet.
Before they leave, they find one last shelf with a broken drawer. At first Shen Qingqiu assumes they will have to abandon it for some other time, but Binghe surprises him. Without him realizing, Binghe had brought the crowbar he used to release Shen Qingqiu from the bathroom. Having placed it in a corner while they explored the office, he brings it forward to break open the shelf.
It is a success. As the drawer falls open, multiple papers fly out, it being filled to the brim.
As Binghe immediately begins to look through the mess, Shen Qingqiu picks up one of the loose papers that have fallen to the floor.
His eyes widens.
In his hands is a very simply drawn map, completely unlike the child's drawing from the forest. Instead, this must have been drawn by an adult. Straight lines thick enough that even Shen Qingqiu's bad eyesight can see where they go come together to create a maze. Big room-esque squares are connected, each with bold letters written within.
Hurrying to Binghe's side, he hands him the drawing. "Will this be of any help?" He asks.
Looking at the map, Binghe's bad mood dries up as he also becomes eager. "Yes! We can use this to navigate the basement!"
Shen Qingqiu knew it! Sitting together, Binghe is quick to explain the map to him. First he identifies where the office they are currently in is. From there he can not only point out which direction they came from, but more importantly, which direction they should go.
He localizes the storage room and as they check the different routes they can go, one of them passes a room labeled 'Library'. Upon hearing this, Shen Qingqiu becomes even more thrilled!
It is inside the library that the shortcut to the upper floors is! Even while knowing they won't be able to enter it currently, he definitely still wants to check it out.
In his excitement, he hurries to stand up as fast as he is able.
"Senior, please wait. I got something I want to check out before we leave," Binghe asks as Shen Qingqiu limps towards the door. There is something of a warning in his voice, as if Shen Qingqiu is left unsupervised for 5 minutes, he will somehow stumble into another trap.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't quite appreciate his worry. Yes, he knows he has been extremely unlucky essentially every time he has been out of Binghe's sight. But that's just it - It is just bad luck. Terrible traps won't just materialize out of thin air like that.
"I will just check that the coast is clear," Shen Qingqiu declares as he reaches the door.
"Senior, if you would just wait for one minute-" Binghe complains, as he stands up. Seeing no reason to wait, Shen Qingqiu peeks into the hallway.
And comes face to face with a masked face.
Before he can make a sound, the cold hard stone floor rushes towards his face. As his face is pressed harshly against the rough rock, he finds himself unable to breathe as his hurt arm and leg smacks against the ground. Vision turning white for a minute, he can only cry out in pain as his mangled limbs are unable to stand the harsh treatment.
In the distance he can hear Binghe call out something, but his dizzy mind can't make out what. Then the presence above him suddenly disappears. Footsteps running away sound out before he feels much gentler hands against his body.
"Senior, are you hurt!? What happened!" Carefully moving him around so Shen Qingqiu is laying on his back, Binghe checks him over for any further injuries.
Shen Qingqiu can only whimper brokenly as the injuries of his arm and leg flare up. Laying there, he fears that the pain killer isn't able to overcome the spasms of pain.
But slowly, the agony weakens until a bearable, but heavy ache. Able to breathe normally again, he shakily lifts his unhurt hand to grasp Binghe's knee.
"I'm fine... I was so surprised, I barely saw what happened..." He shakily says to calm the other.
"Who was that?" Binghe asks, still not past his fretting. "I wasn't able to see anything before they ran!"
"I... It..." Shen Qingqiu hesitates, brain still shaken. Feeling slightly nauseous, he turns his head to the side to calm his shaky vision.
That is when his eyes fall upon a piece of paper. A dropped note. The white paper curled just enough for two clear words to stand out at the top of the paper.
"I have begun sneaking a bit of fruit and leftover cake from the kitchen. No one should notice when I bring it to the boy. I have come to greatly enjoy his company. He talks a bit slow and simple, but I think that is because he is alone so much. He is certainly not dull or senseless, he just takes the time to think. He is always asking about the kitten and I am happy to share that it is almost back to full health."

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 18 - Pouring Water
The room is so small. Besides the toilet and sink, there really appears to be nothing else. No hidden pipes or secret buttons. Shen Qingqiu sees no mechanism that hints towards another trap. Right as Binghe hits the door a second time, Shen Qingqiu picks up the note. The sound of crashing comes from outside the bathroom, but Shen Qingqiu does not immediately go out to check it out. Instead he holds the note closer to his candle, able to discern the now common two words than confirms it as yet another diary page. "Senior, I think you should come see this," Binghe calls out to him. Not seeing anything of interest himself, he turns to step out of the bathroom.
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
Shen Qingqui has decided he needs to re-strategize. Them walking around at random can't be their go-to solution anymore. There must be a smarter way to navigate the basement and find their way out.
Shen Qingqiu is aware he isn't the best at remembering each and every room the mansion contains. Who can judge him? Each level either focused on their own unique part of the mansion or would abandon the setting altogether for a period of time. There are so many rooms with multiple variants, it isn't easy to recollect what traps and/or items and/or puzzles each one has.
But some he recognizes.
The trap in the alchemist room. The pedestals hidden in the piano room. Each safe room.
And in the basement, there is at least one specific room he remembers. Not just because of the somewhat unique way to unlock it, but, more importantly, because it contains a shortcut that leads back to the upper floor.
Now, in order to access this shortcut, he doesn't just need to locate the room, but also the necessary items to unlock it. And that somewhat leads them back to the original issue of just wandering around randomly.
Shen Qingqiu stands no chance of navigating the similar looking hallways and neither does Binghe. So for now, they will have to continue their random wandering. But this time Shen Qingqiu is on the lookout for any indication of where they are in this maze of a basement.
He is not mentioning any of this to Binghe. For all Binghe knows, this is Shen Qingqiu’s first time down here. So, he has to be discreet once he is able to lead them. In future puzzles he will also have to be careful not to reveal them too quickly. Let Binghe think they are finding the solutions together.
So when they leave the bathroom after Binghe has had time to clean himself up, it’s together that they choose the next direction to go. Binghe at least remembers which hallway he came from, so they are certain they are not doubling back.
Shen Qingqius burnt arm is essentially useless. Barely able to move. At least with the pain medication he can stand on his leg a bit, so Binghe doesn't constantly need to carry him. Still, continuing to prove his kind nature, he keeps up his role as crutch while they walk.
Since Binghe collected multiple candles for the bathroom while Shen Qingqiu was out of it, this time they are able to hold one each. To Shen Qingqiu’s surprise, they don't walk for very long before they stumble upon a door.
As they enter the room, at first he worries that they have somehow still managed to walk in circles. Using the candles to Light it up, the room looks exactly like the earlier servant quarters they had hid in. Multiple beds with dressers and chests lining the walls.
Upon closer inspection they find it is not the same.
First of all, in every chest, instead of dresses for maids, the uniforms consist of pants and shirts, revealing this bedroom to have been for the male staff.
Shen Qingqiu’s earlier thought of changing out of his school uniform into something cleaner and drier comes to mind. But now that he is facing clothes that are actually usable, he finds himself too exhausted. That doesn't mean others can't gain from this opportunity.
"Binghe, it doesn't seem the Killer is anywhere near. If you want to change into something dry, now is a good time."
"What about Senior?" Binghe asks. He is rummaging through one of the chests as he speaks. "I'm sure I can find something Senior can change into."
"I..." Looking down at his useless arm and leg, he doesn't think he will be able to get his uniform off, nevermind getting a new one on. He shakes his head. "It is too much trouble. I don't think I will be able to change on my own."
"This junior can help his Senior!" Binghe exclaims. Right after he makes a weird face. Shen Qingqiu can't see the exact expression in the low candlelight, but he can guess what it is about. Binghe is kind, but helping Shen Qingqiu get undressed is likely the last thing he wants to do. Shen Qingqiu can sympathise.
But it is also a matter of... "Binghe... It will hurt too much," he admits. Just the thought of having to push his burn arm in and out of tight sleeves or the clothing of the pants sliding against his mutilated foot makes him shiver. The painkillers are working well, but he rather not test their limits.
"Oh…” For some reason Binghe sounds almost… Disappointed? “Then just give me a minute, Senior!"
Handing Shen Qingqiu his candle, Binghe steps back to change. He makes quick work of pulling off his shirt and switching it with one from the chests. Dusty white cotton slide on, easily buttoned together in the middle. It fits quite well, only slightly tight around his upper arms and across his chest. Not something that will limit his movement.
For pants, he keeps the ones he is already wearing. Seemingly none of the pairs in the chests are big enough for him. And when it comes to the ability to run, he isn't risking any hindrances.
Changed into something drier, Binghe can now explore the second difference between the male and female bedrooms together with Shen Qingqiu. That being a number combination lock.
It requires three numbers and is stuck to one of the chests at the back of the room. As they look closer, Binghe is able to discern images scratched into the surface of the chest. Apparently they depict the form of a cat, a mushroom and a heart, in that order.
Shen Qingqiu immediately recognizes the symbols to be hints to a puzzle. But what they hint at, he can only guess for now. He asks Binghe to check the room again, this time for anything that resembles the symbols.
It is no luck. Instead he manages to find another diary page.
Both are feeling apprehensive about the diary pages by this pointt. Binghe has clearly decided that they are more trouble than they are worth. The thing is, Shen Qingqiu doesn't quite agree with him yet. Especially when they are just finding them laying around. The pages are brief enough that the seconds spent reading them doesn't hurt.
But for future notes stuck in trap contraptions, those he will skip.
Without having to ask him to, Binghe does come over to read the note out loud. His tone is much more stale and dry, reading like it is an assignment for class. Shen Qingqiu does not comment on it. Instead he moves closer to Binghe, their shoulders touching, as he looks down at the blurry page trying to discern the words himself.
"Ha, well now Ms. _______ tune has certainly changed! Last hunt and today I brought so many mushrooms back that even she couldn't complain about it. A________ asked me how I found so many and I told her deeper in the forest there are so many mushroom patches that stand untouched. I suggested for her to explore it herself, but she refuses. I think she is scared of getting her uniform dirty. I don't think it will matter, though. It sounds like in the future they will send me out more often than the others since I bring such impressive yields."
As Binghe finishes, he hands the note for Shen Qingqiu to add to the diary. Shen Qingqiu expects him to get back up right after, but he doesn't. He fiddles with his hands for a second, before he sits straight, catching Shen Qingqiu’s eyes.
"Senior, I really think with these notes we should just-"
CRASH!
Both Shen Qingqiu and Binghe jump. The sound of multiple objects crashing into the ground is heard loud and clear. The sound coming from right outside the room. For a second, neither move a muscle. As if they are frozen to their spot.
Then the sound of running footsteps.
But these footsteps... Instead of the heavy weight of the Killer, they are undoubtedly lighter. Much lighter!
Quick as lighting Binghe is up, rushing to the door. Shen Qingqiu can't follow, so his only choice is to wait for what Binghe finds. Seconds thick past, but after only a minute Binghe returns. As he comes over to gather Shen Qingqiu his eyes are serious.
"Someone else is down here," is all he says as he brings Shen Qingqiu back out the room. Here is where he sees exactly what Binghe means.
It is not just candles that lay discarded on the floor. Entire candlesticks have been dropped from their base. Based on the crash and sound of footsteps, this was likely not intentional.
And definitely didn’t come from the Killer.
“What happened?” He can’t help but ask.
Binghe studies the pile for a second longer before he answers. “I think they tried to get one of the candles. But if you don’t know how to properly release it, it will fall apart like this.”
Shen Qingqiu does not question how Binghe knows how to properly release it. That is what a good hero halo does for you. Instead he focuses on Binghe’s earlier words about someone else being down here.
Binghe is not wrong. Shen Qingqiu knows exactly who it is.
But he can't tell Binghe that he knows. He can only try to hint towards his knowledge, hoping Binghe will follow along. "We should keep an ear out for whoever they are. If they are running at the first opportunity, they likely aren't aggressive."
"Or they just don't want to be found out yet," Binghe mumbles to himself before speaking more clearly. "We should also move on. The killer could have heard the noise so I don’t want us to stay any longer"
Hurrying away from the second servant quarters, they luckily don't run into the Killer. Shen Qingqiu is still unable to recognize the current area, so he isn't able to guide them around just yet. But with the locked chest, he tries to memorise the roads they take. Just in case they need to find their way back. His eyes are especially on the lookout for anything resembling the three images.
This is when they stumble upon not one, but two doors, standing across each other. Their doors aren't as thick as those for the sleeping quarters or the kitchen, but they fully fill up their frames, not an inch of space in between the edges.
The first door is easily openable. At a brief glance it just appears to be a small bathroom. Before exploring further, Binghe tries to open the other door. That one doesn't give, though.
"Is it locked?" Shen Qingqiu asks. Having been left at the unlocked toilet, he watches Binghe twist the handle a couple of more times.
"Hmm, I'm not certain. It rather feels stuck. I think something is caught in the frame." As Binghe shakes the door, Shen Qingqiu can also hear a faint rattling.
"You think you can get it open?"
"If I shove hard enough. Give me a second, Senior."
Preparing himself, Binghe takes a few steps back. Putting his strong arm forward, he rushes towards the door. He hits it square, with a loud smack, but it stays closed. The sound of something loosening does ring out.
Binghe tries to just push it open again, seeing if his strength is enough to make it give. It is no luck.
"Just one more time," he mumbles, as he steps back, ready to rush forward again.
While Binghe deals with the door, Shen Qingqiu decides to check out the small toilet. The room is quite tiny, with barely enough space for a sink. Bracing himself against the wall, he only needs to take two steps in before his candle lights most of the room.
On top of the tank of the toilet rests another note.
Shen Qingqiu feels quite a bit more guarded after his encounter with the note in the kitchen. But this one just lays plainly on the tank. Nothing on top of it. Seemingly not stuck in anything. Cautiously, he steps closer.
A sound like a rusty whistle rings out behind him. Turning around, he can just barely see the frame of the toilet tank begin to sink in on itself. That is the only warning he gets before the door behind him suddenly slams closed.
In shock, Shen Qingqiu almost loses his balance, dropping his candle. He hears Binghe yell something from the other side, but they are too muffled to make out.
The sudden noise of rushing water is too deafening.
From both the toilet and sink water overflows. Even coming from above, it pours down the walls, immediately covering the floor. It is quick to extinguish the candle, leaving Shen Qingqiu in total darkness.
In order to not fall, he had to brace himself on the wall with both hands. Water spills over his arms with the force of a small waterfall, making him barely able to keep his balance.
Fuck! What the fuck!! Why the fuck are these notes suddenly so deadly?? Pushing himself through the darkness he is quick to find the door. Taking hold of its handle he tries to force it open.
It stands firm in its frame.
Shen Qingqiu stands back, preparing to rush forward like Binghe did earlier. Already his steps leave loud splashes, as the water had already reached his ankles.
The room is filling up. And it is filling up quickly.
He puts his entire body into the push as he hammers his shoulder into the door. But even he can feel how weak of an impact it is. Disabled as he is, he is unable to put more force into it. Even the one hit is enough for both his arm and leg to warn him against further attempts.
"Binghe! Binghe, can you hear me?!" Shen Qingqiu calls instead, voice wavering. If he can't get himself out, he will have to rely on Binghe coming to his rescue once again.
"---! I ca---! Are y---! Senior!"
Broken pieces of Binghes yelling pass through the door. Not enough for Shen Qingqiu to understand what he is saying. The running water is only getting louder, as seemingly more fills the room.
"Binghe, you have to get me out of here!" Shen Qingqiu yells, banging at the door.
He gets no answer back.
"Fuck," he curses. Turning away, he stumbles in the darkness, until his hands catch the sink. He tries to turn the handles in every which way in a desperate attempt to halt some of the water flow.
It does nothing.
The water has now reached his knees.
He moves from the sink. Instead he manages to get his hands on the toilet. Feeling out the tank, he tries to find the mechanism that triggered the trap. Anything that can somehow reverse the flood.
The pure darkness leaves him no mercy. Unable to see, he has no hope of understanding and stopping the contraption. Even then, his hands only find cool and hard porcelain. With another curse, he swings at the toilet in frustration. Only to miss. He finally loses his balance, falling into the whirling waters.
It splatters into his face. He manages to keep his head above water, only his body getting submerged.
The waters are absolutely freezing.
It is as if he is swimming in an ocean in Antarctica. Even the rain from the outside wasn't nearly as cold as this. Already he can feel his toes becoming numb
As the water levels steadily rises, he manages to push himself back up. All the time spent getting dry means nothing as he is completely drenched. The bandages on his burnt arm stick painfully into his skin. His teeth clatter as he manages to drag himself back to the door.
The water has reached his hips.
There is nothing he can do to help himself. No pity that opens the way. No mercy to lessen his punishment. He can only continue to bang at the door, hoping he can be released in time.
"Binghe!" He calls desperately.
A loud crack answers his call. Soon followed by the door breaking out of its frame. It falls apart and all the water rushes to spill out at once.
Shen Qingqius legs are unable to withstand the current. He falls forward with the water. Until a pair of arms drags him to the side, holding him against the wall as all the water flows.
One arm around Shen Qingqius waist, the other holding a crowbar, Binghe keeps them standing until the large mass of water has spread everywhere. It continues to leak from the bathroom, but is no longer a rushing stream.
Shen Qingqiu’s entire body is shaking. He swears he can feel his bones rattle inside of him. It hurts when his fingers bend to keep their hold on Binghe. He is certain that when Binghe looks at him, he must be seeing blue lips and pale skin.
Whatever Binghe is seeing, he does not comment on. Instead he begins to ask: "What happened, why were you-"
But they are interrupted. Interrupted by the sound of an axe. An axe accompanied by heavy boots.
Unmistakably coming their way.
Now it is Binghes turn to curse. Strengthening his hold around Shen Qingqiu’s waist, he turns them around. Hurrying past the spilling bathroom, he drags them through the hallways. Shen Qingqiu tries to hold on as well as he can, focused on not getting in the way as Binghe urges them on.
He almost becomes dizzy with their twists and turns. The very first door Binghe sees, he takes hold of. Pushing Shen Qingqiu inside, Binghe just barely manages to close it quietly behind them. With both of them having lost their candles, they are left in utter darkness.
Unable to see, Binghe can only put Shen Yuan down, pushing and prodding him until they are both sat behind the door.
There they wait for who knows how long.
Shen Qingqiu feels as if he is made from ice. Binghe’s heat does nothing to break through even as he keeps an arm around him. He shakily huddles up into fetal position, pushing his knees against his chest as he tries to breathe feeling into his hands.
He mostly manages to plaster more of his freezing clothes against his skin, but still he can feel warmth slowly return to his fingers. Being out of the icy waters certainly helps with him not turning into a popsicle.
After they have waited for multiple minutes, it does not appear as if the Killer is chasing them. Somehow they keep just barely avoiding him, which Shen Qingqiu finds to be a blessing.
Once they are certain the Killer is nowhere near, Binghe gets up. Peeking into the hallway, he leaves briefly to gain another candle for them.
There is absolutely nothing Shen Qingqiu can see. Even the dim light from the door reaches nothing to tell him which room he is in. He manages to push himself up on uneven legs, his good arm against the wall.
Then he hits a protrusion and a click rings out. White lights blind him.
For a second he is certain he just triggered another trap. That he just doomed himself once again. But as his eyes adjusts to the light, slowly he finds he just found an old lightswitch.
“Senior!” Binghe calls, voice a mix between worry and exasperation. But Shen Qingqiu barely hears. As he can finally where he is, his gaze is caught by a huge painting against the opposite wall.
After such a long time, a feeling of accomplishment fills his chest.
He recognizes where they are.

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 17 - Cooking Meat
At first Binghe determines there is nothing of interest inside. Then he hesitates. Looking in deeper, he suddenly declares that he can see something in the back. Some kind of patch. The oven is too deep to reach it though, so he has no choice but to climb inside. Shen Qingqiu can just barely see the shape of Binghes legs still sticking out with the light now inside the oven. He can hear Binghe rustling about, fidgeting with something. For some reason he feels uneasy with Binghe inside of there. Ovens rarely leave its inhabitants unroasted after all.
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
Every hair on Shen Qingqius neck stands on end as he and Binghe walk through the endless halls with only a single candle between them. Binghe is holding out the candle to guide their way, both of them moving as quietly as they can. Neither is speaking. They can't risk the echoes of their voices to reach the killer's ears.
There was nothing else of use back in the servant bedroom. Binghe looked through every chest and dresser, but the most they could find was the uniforms of the staff.
For a moment, Shen Qingqiu had considered getting out of his own ruined school uniform, but that idea had quickly been abandoned. Of course the servants would have been divided by gender, only old fashioned maid outfits to be found.
At least the game had been serious enough not to make them sexy maid outfits. No, the dresses were long and practical. Actually looking like something that would be used by a working person. But a dress was a dress and Shen Qingqiu wasn't desperate enough to abandon his dignity just yet.
This entire search also revealed one other thing. That when it came to exploring a room for puzzles or clues, his foot made him feel more disabled than ever.
Unable to put any weight on it, it just became too impractical for Binghe to carry him while looking around. Instead, Shen Qingqiu was stuck on the bed and had to hope Binghe wouldn't miss any important items that they might need.
He hated it.
If there is one thing he prides himself in, it is his in-depth explorations of each room, searching each nook and cranny for the slightest clue. Stuck waiting while Binghe does all the work goes completely against the point of the game!
Shen Qingqiu knows this world is more than just a game, but still! His point stands!
There is nothing he can do about it, though. So once Binghe declared the room cleared, he could only follow along as Binghe brought them back to the hallway. From there they could only continue onward.
Like back when they ran from the Killer in the forest, Binghe had been too focused on survival to remember which route he took. So like how they were lost back in the forest, they now also find themselves lost here in the basement.
At least the basement is inside the mansion. So the chance of them stumbling on a way out is greater than before. If anything, with his cheat guide knowledge, Shen Qingqiu might be able to find a shortcut and unlock it early. They have already messed up with the game's linear progress enough that one more change shouldn't make much of a difference.
It takes time for them to find anything of note, though. Instead of multiple fake doors like on the upper floor, the basement just has empty space. So it takes them a while to find another room.
Once they do, it's a door slightly thicker and larger than the one to the female servants living quarters. It is just as simple, though, and opens with only a slight creak as they push at it.
The lack of light means they can't see everything at once, but they quickly realize it is a kitchen they find themselves in. There is a very large table in the middle of the room with multiple chairs and old-fashioned cooking tools at the edges of the room. None of it appears to be of high quality.
This was likely where the servants would cook for themselves. For a huge mansion like this, with its staff living in the building, they would need facilities to take care of themselves. Not that too much was spent on those facilities. The room clearly gave off an air of only containing the basics for human survival.
Binghe leaves Shen Qingqiu in a chair as he looks around the room. While opening cupboards and checking shelves, he describes to Shen Qingqiu what he sees.
Mostly moldy food inside of containers. Dry crackers and leftover tea. Surprisingly, nothing that would leave a smell is left. No rotting meat. No hairy cheeses. No spoiled vegetables. For a kitchen that was meant to feed multiple servants it is notably empty.
As Binghe reaches the oven, the light from the candle is too dim to show it in its entirety.
Shen Qingqiu is just about to call for Binghe to come back out, when he does so by himself. In his hand he holds a piece of paper. Another diary page. Shen Qingqiu does not have to ask before Binghe reads it out loud.
"Besides collecting vegetables from the greenhouse, we have been asked to now collect mushrooms from the forest. A________ admitted to me she thinks the woods are too gloomy and asked why we couldn't just grow the mushrooms in the greenhouse like our other crops. I don't know much about it myself, but M_______ says it's because the environment is all wrong. Luckily for A________, we have been told we will each get shifts. Sometime tomorrow we will be taken out and shown where to look for the best patches"
More descriptions of the daily life of the mansion. Shen Qingqiu wonders if this diary really will have anything of note or if his interest is just a waste of time. He just can't help being curious, finding an item that seemingly didn't exist in the original game.
Binghe gives him the page and then goes back to look around. It is as he is checking underneath a cupboard, when echoes reach them. Echoes of steps.
Binghe doesn't hesitate before he blows out the candle. Utter darkness befalls them. Quietly, Shen Qingqiu tries to push himself off his chair, but his leg won't cooperate, each movement he makes painfully disagreeable.
A pair of hands land on his shoulders and he startles at first, even as he knows it is just Binghe. The other helps him down from the chair. He moves them into the space between the door and the oven. There they wait as quietly as they can.
The steps draw nearer. There is no doubt who their owner is. The scratch of the axe head against the stone floor rings out.
It is as if the Killer has a sixth sense for their whereabouts. Once he is outside the door to the kitchen, he stops. Lightly, the door is pushed open. Just the slightest push. Not enough for it to open completely.
Binghe and Shen Qingqiu can see nothing from where they stand. A tiny speck of light slips in from the hallway. Not revealing anything particular. Really, without bringing a candle inside, it is impossible to see what the room contains.
The Killer appears to agree. After he must have been looking in for a minute, his steps continue. With bated breath, Binghe and Shen Qingqiu wait until it is again utter silence.
"Senior, are you okay?" Binghe asks, his whispering voice tickling Shen Qingqius ear.
"I'm fine," he answers. "We will need another light."
"Just one moment." Binghe says as he leaves him to lean against a counter. Out in the hallway, it takes him only a minute to free another candle. A minute that allows Shen Qingqiu to feel out the spot he is in.
He can see nothing, but really, he can barely see anything when they have a candle. Carefully he moves his hands along the wood, feeling every crevice. Once he reaches the edges that meet the wall he finds a loose spot of wood. Without thinking he presses it down. Inside his hand feels the sensation of paper.
Another note? Are they just being thrown at them by this point? Isn't there supposed to be some excitement between each piece of the lore puzzle? It isn't fun putting everything together if it just gets handed to them on a silver platter.
Still, Shen Qingqiu tries to tuck it free. Something keeps it stuck, but it feels loose enough that he believes he can get the paper without ripping it apart. With a bit more strength, he finally frees it.
A low click rings out. Then the entire room lights up as an inferno bursts out from the oven.
In a split second the oven turns from cold and dark to fire reaching out in every direction. The nearest wooden furniture immediately catches on fire, smoke already spreading around the room.
Shen Qingqiu shouts in shock. That shout soon turns sharp as his sleeve is caught by flames. In reaction he can only throw himself away from the oven in order not to burn like a crisp.
He lands between the large table and the door. A painful scream erupts from his throat as he lands on the hard stone. As he lands right on his leg.
It is as if it got chopped apart anew. Skin and meat and bone that barely held itself together cries out once more. The last effects of the pain medication can't protect him as his entire leg howls in pain.
And this time it is not alone. His sleeve is still on fire, his skin blistering from the flames. Even outside of the reach of the oven, he is still caught by its desire to devour him whole. The combined agony from his leg and arm leaves his body convulsing, unable to stop the pain.
Between his own breathless wail, he hears someone call for him.
"Senior!"
Suddenly someone is there beating at the fire consuming his arm. It hurts more with each hit, but they manage to kill off the flames. Next a pair of strong arms wrap around underneath his armpits to then drag him out of the kitchen.
There is no time for concern for his leg. He can only sob louder as it brutally protests the rough manhandling.
"Senior! Senior, can you hear me? What happened?" Binghe shouts, though his words barely get past the fog that is filling Shen Qingqius mind.
Smoke now spills out of the room, the roar from the oven echoing out in the hallway. Most of the kitchen is on fire by now. Luckily enough the stone flooring and walls appear to keep it from spreading further. Inside, the flames sputter and hiss, begging them to step back in. Begging for a chance to sear at their appetising flesh.
It is not the fire catching them that they have to fear.
"Senior, we have to get away," Binghe yells above the inferno.
Shen Qingqiu can't even try to push himself to stand. There is no way his leg can keep his weight. His burnt arm also refuses to cooperate with any movement. He can barely breathe as coughs keep wrecking through him, worsening each of his injuries.
"Binghe- The Killer will- You can't- Go!" he manages between each gasp of breath.
Binghe gets to action. Once more he is forced to practically carry Shen Qingqiu. Still, he does not allow this to slow them down as they run through the hallway.
They manage to get out of sight from the kitchen. Soon after they can hear a heavy physique hurrying towards the screaming fire. Whatever happens after, Shen Qingqiu can not tell.
His leg is screaming in pain. His arm is weeping. It is like he never got away from the inferno, burning him up from the inside. A wild fire, aimless and overpowering, keeping him from having any rational thought. His body begs to give out from all the stress thrust upon it. He can feel himself getting heavier and heavier and with it Binghes panic grows.
"Senior, please! You have to stay up! I don't-"
Binghes voice turns to slurry in his years. It is like each sense in his body is breaking down one by one. His eyesight, already blurry. Sound becomes mush. Only able to smell smoke, only able to taste ash. And like always, the parts of him that suffer the worst, the parts most painful, are the last to leave. His ripped off foot barely hanging on by a thread of skin. His blistering arm, feeling as if the fire is still consuming it.
"Talk to me! Keep your eyes open! I need to know that you are okay, I need-!"
This is so much more unbearable than when they ran from the Killer last. Like this, Shen Qingqiu wishes that he would instead be dead.
"Senior!"
He is not even granted full unconsciousness.
His mind flips in and out of reality. He gets brief periods of blessed darkness. Then he is thrust back to them running around a swirling labyrinth. Weak lights pass by, almost hypnotising in their patterns. He wonders if this is what hell feels like.
Then he finds himself sitting down. His foot is begging to just be ripped off by now. Maybe that would lessen the agony. He is uncertain if his arm is even still connected to his body.
Suddenly a hand grabs his chin, pressing at his jaw until his mouth is forced open. Two fingers are stuck down his throat, making him gag. He almost thinks he is going to vomit when they are gone. Next something cold is pressed against his lips. As sweet, cool liquid spills past, he realises it as water. Greedily he drinks as much as he can. He whines when it is taken away from him again.
More brief darkness. When he returns, the agony of his body is the slightest bit lighter. Especially his arm feels better. Something cold and wet has been wrapped around it, and it is heaven against his flaming skin. The pain is not gone, but it is a tiny bit more bearable.
Bearable enough that he can finally open his eyes.
He has to blink a few times to clear his sight. When he does he finds himself in an aged bathroom. He can see surprisingly much as four to five candles have been placed around the room. There are a couple of mirrors hanging on one wall with stools underneath to sit on. There are multiple wooden tubs, Shen Qingqiu himself leaning up against one.
“Senior, are you awake? Can you hear me?” Binghe suddenly appears in his sight. Taking hold of his hand, Binghe uses the other to wipe Shen Qingqius forehead with a wet cloth.
“Binghe…” He sighs. His voice hoarse and dry. It hurts to speak. “Where are we…?”
“I found an old bathroom for us to hide in. It is lockable from the inside, so no one should be able to find us,” Binghe explains. “But don’t speak anymore. I gave you the last pill for the pain and it hasn’t had enough time to settle in yet. Rest until you feel better.”
Shen Qingqiu can only nod, settling himself slightly against the tub. Looking in, he can see it has been filled with water. Binghe moves back and forth, occasionally returning to wipe at Shen Qingqiu with the towel. It feels nice against his heated skin and he can’t help but sigh into it.
Slowly, but surely, the pill does its work. The torture that is his foot lessens to a dull thrum. The fire of his arm becomes embers. He feels stiff and sick, and the nausea won’t calm down, but this is a hundred times preferable to the longing for death his prior state left him in.
This is manageable. Survivable.
For now.
Back in the shed he took two pills and it lasted him around an hour. With only one, he hopes it will at least last half of that time.
Once he becomes more present, Binghe begins to speak to him more. Mostly easy questions about where he hurts the most and what Binghe can do to relieve the pain. Shen Qingqiu realises Binghe has wiped most of the dirt and blood off his face and hands, though his clothes are still unsavable. Even his bandaged foot looks much cleaner, the bandage around it having been changed for a cleaner one.
His arm is also wrapped in bandages, though they have been soaked in the cold water from the tup to soothe the burn.
When Shen Qingqiu can hold a conversation without his voice sounding like it will break, Binghe finally asks him what happened inside the kitchen.
“I… I was just feeling out the room. When I found a crevice. There was a note inside and when I pulled it free it must have activated a trap.”
And what a trap! Shen Qingqiu was not prepared at all! He is certain he would have remembered a sudden fiery explosion so extreme as that, but no. In all his playthroughs, he never stumbled into that particular death scenario.
In all of his playthroughs he never found those strange diary pages either. So really, the trigger for that particular scenario wouldn’t even exist…
That is, if it even was another diary page?
Binghe answers that for him as he holds up a piece of paper.
“You were holding this in your hand,” he says as he shows it to Shen Qingqiu. He then produces another page, one Shen Qingqiu hasn’t seen before. “And I found this inside of here.”
Staring back and forth between the two pages they now fill him with dread more than curiosity. Filling out the diary appeared easy with the first two pages, but page number 3 has now shown collecting them could be a deadly task.
Looking up at Binghe, he finds his expression is not particularly approving either.
“Senior, I don’t understand why we are collecting these. How can they in any way help us with what is happening to us now?”
“Maybe they can give us an insight into what has happened here? Or a clue to some puzzle. Why, what do they say?” he can’t help but ask.
Binghe seems displeased with his answer, but obediently reads both pages out loud.
"The sun was warm today with only a light breeze. Today was perfect for collecting mushrooms and I am so happy I got the task. No matter what A________ says I don't think the forest is scary at all. The mushroom patch is not too deep and I find the silence enjoyable. It quickly gets so loud in the kitchens, so it is not often I get to be by myself. We have had to go out quite often lately, but I don't understand how we are running out of mushrooms this quickly. Is the Master and Mistress really requesting that many mushroom dishes?"
"I hate her! I absolutely hate her! Ms. _______ humiliated me in front of everyone and it wasn't even my fault! We have had to go collect mushrooms so often by now, that there are barely any to find. What am I meant to do? I can't just make more mushrooms appear out of thin air! Why do they matter so much? M_______ tried to comfort me, but I was so embarrassed that I hid in the toilet until everyone went to bed. I swear, that the next time they send me out, I will find more mushrooms than anyone else!"
As Binghe finishes reading Shen Qingqiu understands his attitude around these diary pages much better. He really almost died for this? A girl complaining about mushroom gathering? Maybe Binghe is right and this is just some old rotten diary with nothing of use in it. But then why would it be here? Why would it suddenly appear in the game when it has never existed before?
Shen Qingqiu has no answer. And he can’t even ask for Binghes opinion.
Binghe doesn’t even know this is all just a game. To him, this is all a real life nightmare. Running from a terrifying killer. Trying to keep his senior alive. Not even realising that if the said senior dies, he will just wake up to redo everything again.
And that when that happens, Binghe will have forgotten everything. Everything that they have experienced, every hurt, every bond, every bad and every good… None of it will matter to him anymore. He will be a blank slate, experiencing everything again without even knowing it.
Abandoning the diary pages on the floor, Binghe rinses his towel in the tub. Once again he cools Shen Qingqius forehead, his touch gentle and kind. His brow is furrowed in worry. Even after all the time with Shen Qingqiu being out of it, he has not even cleaned himself besides his hands.
Even as Binghe sits only a few centimetres from him, Shen Qingqiu feels as if they will never be further apart.

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 16 - Dear Diary
Again and again Binghe surprises him with his actions.  He came back to rescue Shen Qingqiu from the first appearance of the Killer. He helped keep his foot together. He has basically carried Shen QIngqiu around the forest for almost an hour. And then he again risked his life for Shen Qingqiu, even though he wasn't in immediate danger.
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
Since waking up for the very first time, there is no denying the mansion aesthetic has been quite gloomy and eerie. The lights have been just dim enough to wonder what could be hidden in the corners it couldn’t reach. The old fashioned tapestry covering every wall and the deep red rugs covering every floor speak of a time that should have been forgotten. Each piece of furniture, seemingly handmade, but the material heavy and ominous. nothing having been touched in years and the rot and decay that settles in from that. All of this comes together to create a sense of uncertainty, distrust, uneasiness, whatever word you might look up in a thesaurus.
None of what Shen Qingqiu had seen of the mansion so far is in any way like the basement.
They are surrounded by nothing but brickwalls, everything dizzily the same. The candles lining the walls aren't just dim, but barely give any light to where they are going. The spacing between them is just far enough that they almost lose hope they will reach the next point. Each step they take echoes throughout the tunnel-esque corridors, distorting the sounds until they no longer know which are theirs.
They have no idea how close the Killer is to catching them.
But there is no doubt that he is hunting them down.
The basement is like a maze. no discernable features. Hallways splitting up in multiple directions. There is no rhyme or reason for which way Luo Binghe runs, seemingly just focused on getting them further away. Something that would have been easier accomplishable if it had just been him…
To Shen Qingqiu this is like torture. They don't know where to go. They don't know how far the Killer is. His ruined leg sends surges of pain for every movement. They haven't run for long and he is already gasping for breath.
During all of this, his entire mind can only think one thought: They are not supposed to be here. He is not supposed to be here!
Finally Luo Binghe stumbles upon a door. Unlike the ones in the mansion, this one has no carved motif or intricate patterns. It is flat and rotten and easily gives way when Luo Binghe thrust it open.
The room they find is utter darkness. A sliver of light reveals multiple single beds spread around the room, before the force from Luo Binghe's push leads to the door closing behind them.
It is completely black. They can see absolutely nothing.
Instinctually, Shen Qingqiu connects pure darkness with danger. Prior experience tells him no light leads to unavoidable death. But Luo Binghe doesn't stop his advancement. Moving them both further into the room, Shen Qingqiu can suddenly feel a wooden frame bump into his good leg.
"Senior, please get down," Binghe whispers right before he carefully helps Shen Qingqiu to the floor. They both try to be gentle with his leg, but with the knowledge the Killer can appear any moment, they can't afford to wait. Tears of pain threaten to fall, once Shen Qingqiu is finally sitting down.
Luo Binghe has completely let go of him. With a hand on what he assumes to be a bed, Shen Qingqiu tries to collect himself in as few seconds as possible. The sound of shuffling comes from Luo Binghes direction, signaling that he must have pushed himself underneath the bed.
Shen Qingqiu forces himself to follow. Once he is laying on the cold and hard stone flooring, he tries to shuffle under the bed too. He barely manages a few centimeters before he feels a hand on his shoulder and back. Next he feels what must be a knee moving behind his legs. In the next second, Luo Binghe pulls him in, until he can feel his entire body pressed against the other.
Shen Qingqiu can still see nothing. This close he can hear and feel Luo Binghes small puffs of breath. The heat from his body like before seems to seep into Shen Qingqiu, keeping him warm despite the state that wind and rain has left him in.
Shen Qingqiu can feel his heart beat wildly as he waits for the Killer to appear.
Seconds tick by. Each like the length of an entire night. With the door falling shut after them, they can hear nothing from the hallway. They have no way of knowing when the Killer will burst ind.
His eyesight completely gone, it is like Shen Qingqiu's other senses strengthen. Any shuffle or rustle coming from them is louder than any alarm. The smell of rot coming from the room is almost pungent, leaving him nauseous. Luo Binghes heat burns against his skin. His tongue turns sticky in his mouth as his spit thickens.
The Killer is not showing up. It is still only the two of them.
"Senior." Luo Binghe suddenly breaks the silence with a whisper. Shen Qingqiu jumps as if he was shouting. "Do you think the Killer will appear?"
Shen Qingqiu can feel Luo Binghe's question like an unbalanced tray in his hands. The uncertainty of whether it will come crashing down before it can be placed down safely.
"Did he see us enter here?" Shen Qingqiu asks. Pressed this close together, while his voice is barely more than a breath, Luo Binghe is still able to hear him.
"I don't know. I have no idea how far away he was," Luo Binghe says. Like a twitch, the hand still holding Shen Qingqiu suddenly grabs hold of his shirt.
Shen Qingqiu suddenly notices Luo Binghe's entire body is trembling. Freeing his own hand from where it is caught between them, he tries to reassure him with a few pats. Unable to find a target in the darkness, he ends up patting Luo Binghe's chest.
"If he finds us, there is no way out."
Luo Binghe's grip tightens. "I know, but how long will we need to-"
With a loud bang, the door is kicked open. A hulking mass steps into the room. The door almost falls shut again, but is caught in the last second. The Killer keeps it open, allowing the light from the hallway to seep in.
With a shocked reaction Shen Qingqiu's hand moves from Luo Binghe's chest to his mouth, silencing any further words he might have spoken. Turning his head as far as he can, he is able to see the Killers’ dark booths. Dark booths that soon step further into the room. Slowly turning as if surveying the area.
Shen Qingqiu can feel both his own and Luo Binghe's hearts trying to beat out of their chests. He tries to keep his own breathing as silent as possible. He can only wait and see what will happen.
The Killer takes a couple more steps. Never further than where the light reaches. Then he moves to the closest bed.
For just a second there is no movement. Then he moves to the next bed. Again he waits. Then moves again. This pattern continues until he stands right by the bed Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe are hiding under.
Here he doesn't move after just a second. Instead, after holding their breaths for almost 20 seconds, the axe falls from his shoulder. It lands with a loud crash right in front of Shen Qingqiu's face.
The rusty metal reflects wide eyes and a pale face. The blurry expression mirrored is one of terror and anxiety. His mouth is open as if he was about to scream, but the noise got strangled in his throat. He can feel Luo Binghe's body stiffen behind him.
Seconds tick into minutes. The Killer stands completely still, neither moving himself or his axe. It is as if he is perfectly content just standing guard here the rest of the night. Waiting for the silence to become unbearable. Waiting for them to reveal themselves.
In Shen Qingqiu's mind he begins to see images of what will happen. Will the Killer lift his horrible axe, swinging it straight through the bed and into Shen Qingqiu's vulnerable chest? Will he reach under the bed, rip Shen Qingqiu out from Binghe's grasp and chop him up in the reach of the light. Or will he tear the bed away, leaving Shen Qingqiu and Binghe to scramble for cover until Binghe is forced to leave him to his fate?
Each scenario that runs through Shen Qingqiu's head is terrifying and dreadful. The oppressive pressure becomes oppressive. Suffocating. Shen Qingqiu is almost ready to reveal himself just to put an end to the wait. Push himself out just so he can end this horrible session and return to his room. Call out for the Killer and welcome a quick and terrible end.
Right as he prepares himself to do something, anything, the Killer finally moves. He steps away. He goes to the door. And he leaves. Pulling the door, so only a sliver of light remains as he disappears.
The Killer is gone.
The beating of his heart has not lessened, but this time it comes from relief. Not understanding how he has now survived a second encounter with the Killer, he turns back around.
And comes face to face with Binghe's eyes staring straight into his own. His mouth still covered by Shen Qingqiu’s hand.
He tears it away, an apology ready on his lips, but then he realises...
He and Binghe are laying very, very close.
From the top of their heads to the sole of their heels, they are fully pressed together. Not a centimetre of space between them. Binghe's arm is still encircling him in a hold, one of his legs curled around Shen Qingqius. While Binghe is just as wet from the rain as Shen Qingqiu, he does not feel cold.
Shen Qingqiu suddenly feels like an insect pinned in a frame. Binghe is looking at him with an almost calculating expression, an unknowable intent behind them. While one of Shen QIngqius hands hangs awkwardly in the air, the other is trapped between their chest, only able to shudder in its hold.
Distantly, Shen Qingqiu is suddenly hit with the thought that they are hiding under a single-sized bed. There's not a lot of space underneath a single-sized bed. Actually, when thinking deeper about it, when playing the game, only one character at a time could hide under single-sized beds. So the both of them squeezing together like this shouldn't even be possible. This is quite practical information to have for future hiding needs, ah. Now Shen Qingqiu knows for certain single-person hiding spots can be used by more people, as long as they are pressed very intimately closely together...
"Senior, I think he is gone now," Binghe suddenly whispers.
Breaking out of his stupor, Shen Qingqiu realises he has not said anything or moved for a bit. Which must come off as very strange to Luo Binghe. Trying to act as if nothing has happened, he schools his expression, until it is back to being blank and neutral. If his face feels more heated than it should, then luckily it shouldn't be visible in the lack of light.
Luo Binghe releases Shen Qingqiu, scooting himself out from under the bed. This gives Shen Qingqiu a few extra seconds to scold his own slow reactions before Luo Binghe is on the other side, helping Shen Qingqiu out and back to sitting.
"Wait for a second, Senior," Luo Binghe whispers. Quietly he sneaks towards the door. To Shen Qingqiu's surprise Binghe uses the game mechanic he invented: peeking out the door to check if the Killer is truly gone.
Okay, clearly not everything in this world is limited to the game mechanics of the original game. The single-sized bed hiding two people isn't the only other example here. But Shen Qingqiu still gets confused with how Luo Binghe will seamlessly switch between acting according to his NPC AI and then behaving as if he has free will.
And he hasn't just done all of this for any character. No, it has specifically been Shen Qingqiu. The scum villain. Luo Binghe's natural enemy. The number one person Luo Binghe could abandon and not even the game would punish him for it.
Because really, why hasn't he abandoned Shen Qingqiu yet?? He actually wants to scold Binghe for this, the danger he just put himself in with the stunt he did in the garden. Why didn't he just run away and go to Ning Yingying? Shen Qingqiu almost opens his mouth to berate Binghe, telling him exactly how stupid that was.
But then he doesn't.
Done is done. There is no reason to complain about things that can't be changed. So instead what comes out is: "How did you break the lamp post?"
His voice is quiet, as to not alert anyone who might still be nearby, but Luo Binghe still manages to hear him. After peeking out the door for another second he turns his head to face Shen Qingqiu as he answers. "A well-aimed rock. I was lucky I got it the first time, I had to react quickly to get us both out of there in time."
Lucky indeed! Shen Qingqiu hadn't been able to see Binghe at all, just how far away was he when he threw that rock? Only someone protagonist-coded could get away just like that.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't have any other questions to ask, and Luo Binghe is quick to return his attention to the hallway. Tired of the cold, hard floor, Shen Qingqiu hoists himself on top of the bed.
With the little light allowed inside from the hallway, most of the room is still covered in darkness. But now that he has time to look around, he finds it containing multiple single beds. Each bed has a tiny dresser beside it and a small chest by the foot. As he uses the bed frame and dresser to pull himself up, he notes a piece of paper underneath his fingers.
Sitting on the bed, he looks at it. Tiny blurry text meets his eyes, but they widen as he sees two words. Written much larger and clearer. Pulling the notebook out, he flips it open to compare.
What is this coincidence?? He finds the diary and then immediately finds one of the missing pages right after? Come on game, you gotta build up some more suspense here, you can't just give it all away immediately!
Shen Qingqiu's inner complaining is interrupted by the little light suddenly moving and distorting. Looking towards the source, he finds that Binghe no longer stands by the door, which is wide open.
He doesn't get to wonder for long what is happening. Soon after Binghe steps back inside the room, now holding one of the candles that lit the hallway.
"I don't know how long it will hold, but with this, we can more easily look around."
Well, that is a solution for a problem Shen Qingqiu didn't even consider was solvable. Transportable light sources have been a scarce resource so far, mostly because it is simply a way to limit player progression. Players who still tried to enter pure darkness usually learned the lesson quickly.
So honestly, with how dark the basement has been so far, he is honestly surprised they didn't fall into a trap immediately.
But thinking about it, back when playing the game, Shen Qingqiu had already unlocked the lantern when reaching the basement. After that, dark rooms no longer worked towards keeping the game linear. Instead they became another asset for the horror atmosphere. Places where the player got more paranoid and nervous about someone sneaking up on them and the like.
Based on memory, the basement area is built with this in mind. Most rooms will be pure darkness, adding a sense of creep as the player explores. A terrifying change after wandering the creepy, but well-lighted corridors of the mansion.
Of course, it has all been built with the expectation that the player has the lantern by this point. Which Luo Binghe and Shen QIngqiu certainly do not. So Binghe circumventing the rules and just grabbing a candle is a welcome surprise.
Coming over to sit beside Shen Qingqiu on the bed, Luo Binghe holds the candle between them. Close like this, it feels like its light reaches further than before, giving out a rustic cosy glow.
It is exactly what he needs.
"Binghe, could you read this for me? It is still too blurry for me to read it myself."
Holding out the diary for Luo Binghe, the other studies his face for a minute. Without answering at first, he instead gives Shen Qingqiu the candle and takes the book. He looks it over and browses through the pages before he returns to the first page. He then reads it all out loud.
Listening intently, Shen Qingqiu now gets to know the person who wrote this diary. It was one of the kitchen maids, the first date in the diary being her first day of work after getting hired. The following pages describe her everyday life at the mansion.
Her main responsibilities were cooking, serving the food and gathering ingredients from the mansion greenhouse. These were all tasks she quite enjoyed and mostly she seemed to enjoy her work here. She got along well with the other maids and didn't mind the primitive facilities her and her colleagues had to live in.
Though with that said, firing of personnel happened often. It was rare for anyone working at the mansion to last for more than 6 months. By then they either left of their own accord or were sent away.
This part Shen Qingqiu finds especially fascinating.
The head maid of the mansion is mentioned multiple times throughout the diary. And rarely are any of the words said about her good. Apparently she was a terrible woman, always judging everyone else, no one ever able to meet her impossible high standards.
It was common for her to single out the other maids, ridiculing and humiliating them for the slightest offence. No one could say anything against her behaviour, each complaint shut down with an iron fist. She was strict. Mean Spirited. And not a day passed by where she didn't have something to complain about.
And the reason Shen Qingqiu found this so interesting is because he recognize the surname of the head maid.
It was many sessions ago since Shen Qingqiu had bothered to pick up the picture of the disdainful parents in the bedroom on the upper floor. But he is certain the surname is the same. Thinking back, Shen Qingqiu can also say the woman in that picture certainly fits the description from the diary.
Once Binghe finishes reading, he flips through the pages before looking back at Shen Qingqiu.
“What are you thinking, Senior? You seem very interested in this.”
“Hmm, I’m just wondering if any of it means something. Whether there is something we can use this knowledge for.”
“I can’t really see how. How would  someone's random diary help our current situation?”
Shen Qingqiu just hums and hands Binghe the new page he just found. “Would you mind reading this for me too?”
Despite his earlier words, Binghe readily agrees. He read the new page.
“Another garden boy was just let go. M_______ informed me in the morning after breakfast. I did not know his name, but I still feel sorry for him. Taking care of the garden appears so simple. The gardener must have the same high standards as Ms. _______. I didn’t think much of it at first, but later in the day we were informed that because of lack of hands, we now have to take care of some of the tasks the gardeners were doing. A________ were quite mad about it, but I don’t mind. Gives us more of an excuse for some fresh air.”
Hearing the direct words of someone detailing the ongoings of the mansion does somewhat put everything in a different light. While Shen Qingqiu knows these people technically never existed, never got coded beyond the text describing them, it still makes the place feel more tangible and real. Like there actually used to live people here who had to work, serve and maintain the mansion.
While Shen Qingqiu can feel himself getting more sympathetic for those who used to live here, he still prefers them to be just imaginary people. Lines of code just here to flesh out the lore. Because, in the end, that is still preferable. For them to be nothing more than letters on a paper than real human beings.
Real human beings who would come here only to lose their lives.

Honored Eternal Path of Demise CH. 15 - Garden Break
Looking around the garden, Shen Qingqiu also takes in the different flowers and plants. He can't name any of them, though honestly, they likely aren't even real flowers. Many of them look like a cross between multiple plants, the game developers likely just making whatever generic flower assets that came to mind. But it is as Shen Qingqiu is turning this and that way, trying to get a view of all the different flowers that he notices something. In-between the bushes, just out of reach of his hands, lays a... notebook?
First Chapter ~~ Previous Chapter ~~ AO3 Link
"We're finally back," Shen Qingqiu says in relief, feeling as if a great weight has lifted from his shoulders.
"We could really use it as a map," Binghe agrees with a nod, adjusting his hold on Shen Qingqiu slightly now that they don't have to watch out for roots and uneven paths.
Gravel crunch underneath their feet as they finally step out from the forest. The mansion towers above them, dark spires standing in the way of the moonlight. This is not much of a problem though, as this close to the mansion there are lamp posts to show the way.
They find themselves in a big open area mostly covered by loose rock. To one side stand tall trimmed bushes, taller than both Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe. Against the mansion is a wooden structure, though what it is for will require a closer inspection. The wall that faces them is purely made of reddened bricks, windows scattered across it.
There is no sight of the entrance they came from, but it is not hard to guess which direction they need to go in order to find it. Finally, they can get back on the prober track.
"Senior, what do you think this area was used for?" Luo Binghe asks, looking around at the big space of nothing.
Shen Qingqiu just shrugs. He doesn't really remember this area, which can either mean it is not somewhere he has visited often or it had nothing of note to make it memorable. He can only guess. "I suppose it could be a place to park vehicles or temporary storage for supplies? It really isn't possible to say."
"Hmm, I suppose that could be." Luo Binghe considers. Then he suddenly points towards the wooden structure. "I want to check out what that is. Would you mind Senior?"
Shen Qingqiu kind of minds. He much rather they just go straight for the entrance. But his leg is becoming heavier with each step and standing still might help with the pulsating sensation it has had for the last stretch.
He gives a "Go ahead". They huddle to the wooden structure.
Getting closer to it, it is revealed that the structure has been built into the mansion, laying low to the ground. Standing beside it, the tallest part barely reaches their knees, two aged wooden doors laying almost flat on top of it. Between the doors rests a heavy padlock.
It becomes obvious that this is some kind of basement entrance.
Binghe brings Shen Qingqiu to the wall and releases his hold on him. Onche he is certain Shen Qingqiu is keeping his balance, he turns his full attention to the new entrance. While this seemingly is another dead end, Luo Binghe clearly wants to try it out first.
The padlock is rusty and old. It doesn't look like something that would even hold Ning Yingying back. Luo Binghe takes hold of it, holding it in a tight grip and pulls.
There is no give.
Using both hands, he tries again to force it open. He shakes it around. He pushes against the structure with his feet, putting all his strength into breaking what appears to be a weak lock.
It stays strong.
With a curse he kicks at it. They aren't getting through this way.
"It doesn't change anything if we can't open it. We need to get back to Ning Yingying first either way," Shen Qingqiu reasons, trying to lessen Luo Binghes frustration.
"I was hoping we could use it as a shortcut. The faster we get out of the rain, the better," Binghe complains, but he returns to Shen Qingqiu's side. He holds out his arm for the other to take.
Shen Qingqiu doesn't remember any connections between the upper floor and the basement. At least not any connections that won't first be unlocked until later. Shortcuts are for later levels, once more sections of the mansion become unlocked.
But he just nods in agreement, leaning against Luo Binghe once more. "We don't know what is down there, so it's better that we just-"
Shen Qingqiu interrupts himself as he has to gasp for breath at a sudden surge of pain coming from his foot. It is so unexpected that his leg gives out. Luo Binghe has to tighten his hold in order to keep Shen Qingqiu from falling.
"Senior!? Are you alright?" Binghe worriedly asks, adjusting his hold so he is holding most of Shen Qingqiu's weight.
Shen Qingqiu can't answer at first, the fire swiftly running up his leg before it calms down again. His breathing becomes heavy as he feels cold sweat on his neck, a shaky hand wiping his forehead. The painkillers are definitely growing weaker.
"I'm fine Binghe, I just... I just need to sit down and rest for a bit." He manages to get out, trying to keep his voice reassuring and light. He doesn’t think he quite manages it.
"Should I get you the last pill?" Luo Binghe offers, looking down at Shen Qingqiu's foot like there is anything he can do about it.
"No, I want to save it until absolutely necessary." Shen Qingqiu rejects. "If we just take a break then I should be fine."
The cold hard rock is not a welcoming resting place though, something Luo Binghe agrees with. He and Shen Qingqiu are quick to turn their attention towards the other end of the area, where the tall bushes stand. This is the direction they would have to go for the entrance either way, so they might as well look out for a seat while going the right way.
They quickly find that the bushes function as a divide between the gloomy forest and a smaller garden area. Pots and plots are filled to the brim with flowers in every color and shape. Each kind have their glistening heads turned towards the sky, as if drinking directly from the falling rain. The loose gravel turns to smooth stone, narrow winding paths twisting around the flower beds.
In the middle of the garden stands a single light post, with a drenched bench right beneath its light. Tall flower stalks and blooming bushes surround it, giving an air of feigned privacy, as it is impossible not to see the bench no matter where you stand in the garden.
Binghe hurries towards it. He quickly sets Shen Qingqiu down on the bench. There is nothing they can do to dry it up, but by now, they both have accepted the state the rain and mud has left them in. For now, Shen Qingqiu can only lift his leg, resting it against the length of the bench. He can immediately feel the difference, the pain much more manageable when there is no weight on it.
"How are you feeling?" Binghe asks, hands hovering nervously like he doesn't know what to do with them.
"I should be fine resting here for now," Shen Qingqiu starts. He relates to Luo Binghe's restlessness, but at least Luo Binghe can do something about it where he can't. "Binghe can look around for anything useful. Once you are done checking the area, I should be good to continue on."
Luo Binghe presses his lips together as he considers Shen Qingqiu's suggestion.
"Are Senior sure he will be fine?" he asks, suddenly speaking all old-fashioned again.
"This Senior can rest by himself for a few minutes. Having Binghe hover by his side is not going to hurry it up," Shen Qingqiu grumple, copying Luo Binghes tone. Really Binghe, don't you feel embarrassed speaking like that?
"Okay then. I won't go far, so just call if you need me," Luo Binghe agrees after a minute of deliberation.
It all leaves Shen Qingqiu with an annoying sense of deja-vu, it not even being that long since they had a similar conversation. But really, that time ended up being fine and they really don't have to constantly stick together. Splitting up can be perfectly safe in small doses, as long as the party doesn't go too far from each other.
As the original goods, Shen Qingqiu should be extra safe to split off from other characters as that is basically all he did in the original game.
Fortunately, Binghe doesn't hang back as much as before and soon he is out of sight. Like this, Shen Qingqiu can finally lay his head back on the hard bench, taking a moment to curse the state he finds himself in.
He is cold to the point of freezing. He is wet to the point of drowning. He is muddy to the point of being buried. And out of it all, his hurt foot, naked without a shoe and sock, feels the worst out of all.
Once he takes the last pill, they are on a timer for how long he can keep going. He has already held out longer than he thought he would. But once the pills aren't keeping his leg in check, he won't be more than a blubbering mess. He feels nauseous just at the thought of feeling the full inferno of agony again. Once they are out of painkillers he won’t have much of a choice.
A break was the right choice, though. Like this, he is able to press his hands into his leg, massaging at the pained muscles. It helps with the surging aches that make themselves known at varying intervals. He really should be ready to get going once Binghe is back from his little exploration.
In-between the bushes, just out of reach of his hands, lays a... notebook?
Like the drawing, it is hard to see with just the single light and his blurry eyesight. And he can't reach it while stuck on the bench.
His curiosity takes hold of him. He doesn't even think of waiting for Luo Binghe to return.
Slowly and carefully he maneuvers himself down from the bench. Keeping his foot above the wet ground he drags himself into the bushes, until he can take hold of the book. Using his body as cover from the rain, he flips it open.
It is full of text, though the handwriting is too fine to read like this. It is even smaller than the text on this child's drawing, so he stands no chance of making it out. But every few pages start with two words, written much larger and clearer.
It is not hard to guess that he has found someone's diary. But again, it is quite strange...
Like the drawing, Shen Qingqiu has no memory of any diary from the first level. What is it with new items suddenly appearing? Whatever the diary contains he will have to wait and find out when Binghe gets back. Without his glasses, the only thing of note he finds is that the last pages have been ripped out.
Shen Qingqiu pockets his find and moves to return to the bench. He can feel the strain of keeping his hurt leg above the mud and he wouldn't mind some more rest before Binghe returns.
Then he hears the sounds of footsteps.
Heavy footsteps.
Alarm surges through his stomach and before he can think, he throws himself down. He holds his breath and waits.
Only a few seconds pass. From his current vantage point there isn't much for Shen Qingqiu to see. Then a hovering shadow appears. There is no mistaking the oversized physique of the Killer.
He is back on their trail.
As he steps into Shen Qingqiu's point of view, he has his back turned to him. Shen Qingqiu can see nothing but the back of his coat and the head of the axe as it is slung across his shoulder. For once, no sounds seem to leave the Killer, no heavy breathing.
A morbid kind of curiosity makes Shen Qingqiu want to see his face. To see if there are any marks from when Binghe attacked him with the poisonous bushes.
Speaking of Luo Binghe, Shen Qingqiu can only assume he hasn't been found by the Killer. The Killer's movement is too leisurely as he walks through the garden. Hopefully Binghe will hear him and hide like Shen Qingqiu. They can still get away from this.
Or rather, Binghe can get away from this.
Shen Qingqiu has not had much hope for himself for a long while by now. But that does not mean he is giving up! Right now, the best course of action would be for Binghe to see the Killer and then sneak away. When looking at it from a practical approach, abandoning Shen Qingqiu now would be the better move.
Here is what the logic should be from Luo Binghe's point of view: Either Shen Qingqiu has been found by the Killer or he hasn't. If he has been found, then it is too late. He would be dead and Binghe should hurry to move on and find Ning Yingying. If the Killer hasn't found Shen Qingqiu, then it is still better to leave.
If Shen Qingqiu is hidden, then waiting for the Killer to leave on his own is his best course of action. Once he is gone, Shen Qingqiu can crawl away by himself.
But who knows how long the Killer will stay in this area?
Binghe by himself can easily reach the entrance and follow their original plan during this time. He can warn Ning Yingying and they can together look for a way out.
Having to drag Shen Qingqiu with him, they won't be fast enough. The entrance is too far away. And there is no way Shen Qingqiu can get away quietly.
They will have to split up for real, but Shen Qingqiu has already spent so much time with Binghe. It is time he goes back to being on his own and trying to gain progress by himself. He appreciates his time with Binghe and now he needs to-
Binghe is hiding in the bushes in front of him.
Looking past the Killer, the trail is quite narrow. There are only a few meters between the flower beds Shen Qingqiu is laying in and a plot of blooming bushes in front of him. And between those bushes, a wild ponytail and steadfast eyes look right at Shen Qingqiu.
...
Binghe... Did saving you that one time really change your instinctual animosity with the original goods? Gratitude should only last for so long, what are you still risking your life for, for this old senior?
The Killer has his back turned to the both of them. Shen Qingqiu uses the opportunity to raise his upper body enough to wave Binghe away. Clearly pointing him in the direction he needs to go. To be certain he gets his point across, he motions that Binghe should leave him.
Luo Binghe clearly sees Shen Qingiu's act. He gives no sign of moving. Instead he slowly shakes his head before lifting up an item for Shen Qingqiu to see. Then he points first at himself then at Shen Qingqiu's area.
Shen Qingqiu squints his eyes to try to see what it is, but it is no use. Maybe if he had more light to work with, but like this it is just a dark shape. He does understand what Binghe is trying to say and he decidedly shakes his head. The Killer is right here! What hope does he have of getting Shen Qingqiu out of the garden?
Luo Binghe looks over at the Killer, following his pathing for a few seconds. Then he disappears back behind the bushes. Shen Qingqiu loses track of him quickly. He has no way of looking for him without revealing himself. The flowerbed he finds himself in is in the middle of the garden. There is no way in or out without exposing yourself to the light.
The Killer also doesn't appear to be in the mood to move on. Following the narrow path, he walks around the same circles, never too far from the center. If Binghe has anything planned, Shen Qingqiu does not have high hopes of it succeeding. Rather, he hopes he listened to reason and is on his way by now.
For some reason, Shen Qingqiu does not believe that to be the case.
Instead, a growing nausea is rising in his throat. His hands feel jittery and like he is about to break out of his skin. He realises it is anticipation. Anticipation for whatever Luo Binghe is about to do. Anticipation for it leading to his death. The unknown makes him feel sick and he takes out the diary again.
If he is about to die any second, then he might as well try to gain any knowledge he can from this book, since he will likely not see it for a long time.
Sadly it is not possible to force one's eyesight to get better. The loss of his glasses only becomes more and more of a frustration. Instead, he can try to gain some more light and hope it will help.
Worming his way closer to the light pole, he does his utmost to keep quiet and not catch the Killer's attention. Once he is right underneath the light, he once again looks at the diary. Trying to find any page with something readable. Any page with larger writing or words that stick out or-
With a crash, the light above him explodes. Immediately, the entire garden turns black. The sound of glass crashing to the ground sounds out around him, a few pieces falling on his back. He barely has time to register what just happened. In the next second a pair of hands encircles him, dragging him back up.
The Killer shouts, sounds of running coming closer, but he is as blind in the dark as Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe. They do not crash into each other as Luo Binghe practically carries Shen Qingqiu out of the flowerbed and out of the garden.
Gravel crunch underneath their feet as they step back out on the open area they were before. Whether the Killer hears them, they don't wait to find out. His feet barely touching the ground, Shen Qingqiu can only allow Binghe to bring them to the basement entrance. There he reveals what item he was showing off earlier.
A key. And as Binghe puts it inside the heavy padlock, it is both their luck that it fits. Not wasting time, Binghe wriggles it off and then he uses all his strength to lift the heavy wooden doors.
Shen Qingqiu would help, but he can only lean against the wall watching out for the Killer. He has not appeared yet, not begun a determined chase. His bellows can still be heard from inside the garden. It is only a question of time before he seeks out the light. By then, Binghe and Shen Qingqiu have to be gone.
The wooden doors fall open and Binghe isn't able to completely silence their fall. Instead, he just grabs hold of Shen Qingqiu again, pulling him down the staircase. He doesn't even attempt to close the doors behind them. Instead he hurries them inside, the walls closing in around them.
The last thing Shen Qingqiu sees of the outside is the Killer bursting out from the garden, axe ready in his hands.
Now, their only hope is finding a place to hide in time.
