Elk River Chamber of Commerce | Welcome to the Herd
Welcome back for another installment in our Welcome to the Herd Series. Last time we highlighted our joint offices with Construction2Style, as well as some of the history and things to do in Elk River.
Today we talk to Debbie Rydberg who is the Executive Director of the Elk River Chamber of Commerce about what the Chamber does and how they not only help businesses in Elk River thrive but the community as a whole.
We visited the Chamberâs offices at 509 Highway 10 and sat down with Debbie to learn more about the role they play in Elk River.
youtube
Energizing the PACE of Business
The role the Chamber of Commerce plays in Elk River can be broken down by the acronym P.A.C.E.
âWe exist to energize the P.A.C.E. of business,â says Debbie, âP.A.C.E. is an acronym that means Promote, Advocate, Connect, and Educate.â
According to Debbie, one of the areas that business owners in Elk River who are part of the Chamber enjoy is the âconnectingâ portion.
Through the Chamberâs Connection program, which is a lead-generation meeting that takes place weekly and is included in the membership fee, is a great way for businesses to learn more about one another and to help each other service the community better.
The Chamber and the Community
The local community here in Elk River can also tap into the resources that the chamber provides.
Local business who are a part of the Chamber shows that they are passionate about the community and want to help it grow, as well as provide great services and products to the residents.
âPeople can find all of the members on the website,â Debbie says, âwhich is a good benefit for a lot of membersâŚitâs that third-party endorsement that is critical for a lot of businesses.â
How to Become a Member
Whether youâre an older business or a newer one, there is no time like the present to become a member of the Elk River Chamber of Commerce.
To get started, just reach out to the Chamber and fill out a simple application on their website. If the application is accepted, then youâll pay your first annual fee and youâre good to go from there.
Theyâll help kicks things off with an ambassadors meeting where youâll immediately gain some brand awareness and recognition for your business. In addition, the Chamber Connections program allows you to share your business and message with other business members who can help refer customers your way.
How Committees Help the Community
Many members of the Chamber also join committees to help organize events in the community.
Getting involved in the various committees that are part of the Chamber is a great way to show yourself off as someone who isnât only an expert in their field, but also is helping grow the community.
For example, the Shiver Elk River festival has been going on for nine years, and with the help of various committees and subcommittees â as well as the community members â the event has raised over $135,000 for nonprofits in the area.
This is just one of many examples of how the Chamber of Commerce and its members have helped the community thrive.
Next Steps For Learning More

Weighing the Pros and Cons of DIY Siding
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/diy-siding-pros-and-cons/
Weighing the Pros and Cons of DIY Siding
Today we discuss the pros and cons of installing siding yourself. There are certainly both positive and negative aspects to DIY siding installation, but itâs important to cover all the bases before starting your project. Letâs go over the pros and cons!
Pros of DIY Siding
Doing your own siding installation is generally always going to be cheaper than hiring a professional, just based on the money you save on labor. So, if youâre on a budget, doing it yourself can sound pretty attractive.
You can do all the installation at your own pace. You can take your time, work over the weekends, and hire friends or family to help, all on your own schedule. This can help limit interruptions and distractions to your life, and you can take a break whenever you need it.
DIY means you can do it exactly how you want to. If you have a particular taste, strong attention to detail, and have the skills to pull it off, doing it yourself may be just the right thing for you.
Cons of DIY siding
There is always a flip side to doing something yourself, and when it comes to doing anything on your home yourself, there are a lot of things that a professional may do best, just because of their knowledge and expertise. Cons to DIY siding include:
Anytime you do a remodeling project, the lawful thing to do is pull the building permits and do everything to code. If you donât do this, you may be liable for fines, your project can be delayed, and you may be forced to reconstruct everything youâve done thus far. One thing that can help is reading the directions on your materials; they can explain how to properly install up to code. Otherwise, reaching out to the professionals can be very helpful, and theyâll be able to guide you through the proper route.
Many homeowners underestimate the materials needed for a project. The average homeowner, if they havenât done many, or any, major siding projects before may not know the full components that go into a project of that scale. Going to a local big box store can be helpful, and they can be an excellent guide to help get you where you need to be.
DIYers may not have a proper economy of scale. Professionals purchase their materials in bulk from manufacturers and professional brands. They buy in large volumes so they get better discounts than an individual homeowner may receive when purchasing their materials. Despite the entirety of the project costing less for the homeowner, they may be majorly overcharged for material by not going with a professional.
Not only do you receive professional-grade materials and prices if you do NOT do it yourself, but you also get access to the extensive knowledge and skills of a professional team of contractors. Northface, for example, goes to visit the LP production plant and receives training on how the products work, how they need to be installed, and we get certification to do it to their standards every time.
If youâre finding that the pros outweigh the cons of DIY siding, more power to you! If you want to get the expertise and more value out of your project cost, consider hiring Northface Construction to tackle your next siding project. We are happy to walk you through every step of the way, just give us a call at 763-433-2269.
We look forward to talking with you!

DIY Siding Tips from the Northface Team

DIY Siding Tips from the Northface Team
Today we asked our team for their best tips for Do-It-Yourself siding at home. They had some good onesâeven the dog had something to say!

Installing Vinyl Siding in the Winter
Winter in the Midwest gets bitter cold, which is not the ideal weather for installing vinyl siding. People who donât have the experience of a professional may not know that if they cut into that cold siding, it will shatter. Then youâre out time, money, and materials, which can delay your entire process. Itâs best to wait until Spring to begin your install. Keep your materials in your heated garage or basement to keep them from freezing and breaking in the cold. But, feel free to pummel your old siding with snowballs and have a good old time.
Tools Needed for Vinyl Siding Installation
The most basic tools youâll need when you are going to install vinyl siding include a tape measure, tip snips or a saw, and a hammer. Some other materials that may make your life easier when installing the siding include; a pencil or felt tip pen to mark measurements, a level for ensuring level installation, and a carpenterâs square to mark or cut straight lines. And always remember to measure twice and cut once!
Where Do you Start Installing the Siding on the House?
Siding 101 will tell you always to work your way to the top, starting at the lowest part of your home. A masonâs line level can help you find the lowest point of the house.
What Colors of Trim Work with Vinyl Siding?
If you are looking to have different colored trim with your siding, consider a white or lighter colored trim. Blue siding with white trim is a favorite of many homeowners; the dark to light contrast looks beautiful on most style homes. We have found that gray or beige trim doesnât look as good with vinyl siding. It can look a little dingy depending on what color the siding is. When in doubt, choose a trim that is the same color as your new siding, and it will look just as great.
If DIY is not the route you want to take, reach out to us at Northface Construction and we can get you started with a FREE estimate for your vinyl siding project, plus go over color and style options with you.

The Three Pillars Of Sustainability: Economic, Social, & Environmental
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/pillars-of-sustainability/
The Three Pillars Of Sustainability: Economic, Social, & Environmental
Hey Everyone!
Youâve probably heard the word sustainability here and there, and lately, weâve been using it more and more. People and businesses have been shifting to more sustainable practices more and more. Forbes is calling 2020 the year of sustainable business. Northface Construction is following suit, and weâre starting a new video series about sustainability to showcase other companies taking that step to be more sustainable in 2020.
youtube
Today weâre talking basics with the three pillars of sustainability. The first is social, second is economic, and the third is environmental. In this series, we will be taking field trips to local businesses that are demonstrating some of these pillars, social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability.
The Social Pillar
For a business to be socially sustainable, they may work on social issues within their business, and they will also look towards their community. They may be doing charity work and giving back to people in need. Local charities like Habitat for Humanity are places businesses can get involved in to help their local community.
In their business, they could be working towards a great work-life balance for employees, focus on equity, wellness, and diversity, and other social factors that boost employee morale. They could share tips on how they work sustainably and share that on social platforms for others to learn and follow their lead.
The Economic Pillar
Creating more jobs in a way that keeps things streamlined and limits the waste of time and resources is an excellent example of promoting economic sustainability. They may focus on hiring to retire or hire to re-hire. Promoting employees from within the business, or giving them an option to come back if they ever leave to pursue other opportunities is an incredibly sustainable business practice. It saves on time and resources that go into onboarding new employees.
The Environmental Pillar
Environmental sustainability, simply put, involves leaving the environment better off than when you found it. Businesses may promote recycling and compost over garbage in order to be more sustainable. They may focus more on repairing equipment and tools rather than buying new every year. In our world of construction and home remodeling, businesses who can find a use for every material and maybe donate wood or other materials instead of throwing it away are making a significant impact on sustainability.
We are so excited for you to follow along with our new series as we continue to showcase these organizations devoted to upholding the pillars of sustainability. If you know anyone or any business that might be a good one to feature in our sustainability series, leave us a comment, or message us here and let us know about it. We would love to visit with them!

How Much Does Vinyl Siding Cost?
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/vinyl-siding-cost/
How Much Does Vinyl Siding Cost?
If you are looking to replace the siding on your home, you may be wondering how much is this going to cost me? Well, today weâre talking about how much vinyl siding costs, depending on whether you do it yourself or hire a professional.
youtube
DIY Vinyl Siding
For those who are toying with the idea of installing new vinyl siding themselves, there are a few things to consider. Price-wise, you can anticipate the cost of your materials to be between $5,000 and $8,000, depending on the quality of the materials and the resources that you utilize to get them. For labor, you can also anticipate between 50 and 150 hours of labor to complete the project, depending on your skill level and experience.
If you are requesting help from friends or family, you may be able to shave down your time to finish the project, but may end up facing a slew of other complications. You will have to compensate them somehow, be mindful of any potential injuries and liabilities, plus having to be the project leader and direct everyone in their duties. Maybe you love being that hands-on, but it could also invite more stress and risk to the situation.
Hiring a Professional
Now, on the other side of the coin, if you choose to hire a professional siding company, you can anticipate, on average, $12,000 to $17,000 in cost for them to do the job on your home. First of all, the project would be done on their time, not yours, which means it could take far fewer labor hours to complete. This can be especially nice to get the project done faster so your life no longer needs disruption and you can have your new siding up within no time. In the midwest, there are only small windows of time where the weather is nice enough to get external home projects done quickly and easily, and a professional team can do that.
For some people, doing it yourself makes sense both financially and timewise. Plus, if you have the time and skill to take care of it on your own, more power to you, go for it. For other people, that may not be the case, and their time is very valuable. Expanding your budget to allow for less time and faster results become worth it. In that situation, hiring a professional makes the most sense.
So if youâre one of those people that value their time, then give us a call or visit us online at northfaceconstruction.com. We look forward to speaking with you about your vinyl siding project.

What Do You Look For in a Roofing and Siding Contractor?
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/what-customers-want/
What Do You Look For in a Roofing and Siding Contractor?
We went around the Minneapolis Home and Remodeling Show to ask consumers what they look for when hiring a roofing or siding contractor.
youtube
We asked numerous people what the most important thing was when it comes to hiring a contractor to work on their home.
People look for longevity, product quality, reliability, quality of service, good referrals, good reputation, and good price.
After all of our interviews, we discovered that the #1 thing people look for in a roofing and siding company is reliability.
When consumers are having work done on their home, they want it done quickly and efficiently. In-home projects can take up a lot of time and space in someoneâs home, so reliability is key. The last thing someone wants is to have to track down their contractor when they have a question or an issue arises. Reliable contractors will be ahead of the curve and contact the homeowner first before they have to track down the contractor. In a time where everyone has access to the internet and phone service almost all of the time, most consumers fully expect that they can get in touch with their contractor at any point, using any form of communication. And thatâs definitely trueâthere is really no excuse for a contractor not to be able to respond to a customerâs call, text, or email in a timely manner.
Everyone wants a company that can cover all the bases, and works with them every step along the way. Reasonable price and high-quality products are obviously a factor people look for, but without that reliability, it may not always be worth it in the end. Thanks to Google reviews, consumers can do plenty of research before they ever need to contact a potential business and weed out contractors that have poor reviews and donât fit the bill theyâre looking for.
An article showcasing customer behaviors in 2016 shows two key stats that prove how important online reviews actually are. First, 91% of consumers regularly or occasionally read reviews to determine whether a business is good or bad. Second, 84% of consumers find online reviews as trustworthy as a personal recommendation or referral. Keep in mind, these stats were taken in 2016, which means they could be even more apparent now in 2020! We showcased these to show how far back consumers have been putting online reviews at the forefront of their research.
With a 5.0 star rating on Google, out of 92 reviews, we at Northface Construction rely heavily on the good experiences of our clients to bring in more business. We appreciate so much when people are willing to share their experiences, both positive and negative. Most consumers say they would give a review if asked, so never be afraid to ask your clients to leave a review!

Integrity Flooring: What to Look for in a Flooring Company
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/integrity-flooring/
Integrity Flooring: What to Look for in a Flooring Company
Today, we stopped by Integrity Flooringâs booth during The Home & Remodeling Show at U.S. Bank Stadium. We were able to interview Dan with Integrity Flooring and talk about flooring, customer service, and how they stand above the rest.
youtube
What Does Integrity Flooring Offer?
Dan from Integrity Flooring â âWe are primarily a wood contractor, but we do everything from wood flooring, sanding, refinishing, installation, and coats. One thing we push is more convenience for homeowners. We feel that most wood contractors you find are going to give you a quality wood floor. However, if you do some more research online, youâre going to hear about all the inconveniences associated with having wood floors refinished. Having your floors re-done means thereâs stuff all over your house, strong smells, having to stay off the floor, having to move your furniture. It can be very inconvenient and intrusive to your everyday life. So that is something we pushâour sanding system will extract all the dust from our work environment, out into a van and contains it there. We also have instant cure finishes, meaning no dry time, and furniture and rugs can go back on the floor right away. Our processes are all very low VOC, so thereâs almost no smell with any of these finishes.â
Josh from Northface Construction â âThatâs especially great for people that have families and busy lives. What would you suggest to people who are doing research and trying to decide on a flooring contractor?â
Dan â âI feel like most contractors people would find would do good job craftsmanship wise, but of course, youâre going to want to do a little bit of research on their past projects to see the caliber of work they can do. We are all humans and make mistakes, of course, so if we ever get a call that we got a stain on something that shouldnât have been stained, or a wall gets nicked, we find the homeowners end up focusing on that instead of the work that was done. Itâs important to find a contractor that backs that stuff up, owns up to it, and makes it right. Integrity Flooring will always come back and take care of any mistakes immediately and ensure our customer is 100% satisfied.â
Josh â âSo itâs all about finding someone with a high level of service, integrity, and someone who really cares about their customerâs satisfaction.â
Dan â âAbsolutely. We are very confident in knowing none of our guys are just there for a paycheck. They truly care about what they do, and have a shared goal that is to always have a happy customer at the end of the day.â
Josh â âThat is a great way to pursue life, isnât it? Tell us how people can find you online.â
Dan â âOur website is www.integrity-flooring.com, and weâre on Facebook as Integrity Flooring, out of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Google search will get you to us as well.â
We always appreciate talking to fellow businesses in our industry and do our best to support them in their endeavors. Integrity Flooring lives up to its name by treating its customers right with honesty, fast service, and integrity. You can catch them at the next Home & Garden Show, and keep up to date with them anywhere you can find them online.
We are signing off, Iâm Josh with Northface Construction. Check out our services and get started on your next project with a free estimate.

The Home Mag at The Home & Remodeling Show
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/the-home-mag/
The Home Mag at The Home & Remodeling Show
Today weâre talking to Angela at The Home Mag booth, and she tells us how home builders can benefit from The Home Mag.
youtube
Why should homeowners pay attention to The Home Mag?
Companies like Northface Construction look towards The Home Mag for getting them the best leadsâthatâs what The Home Mag does. The magazine looks for quality companies like Northface and puts them in front of the 150,000 homes around the Twin Cities. The targeted demographic is homes valued at a minimum of $480,000, and a household income of $160,000. The magazine gets delivered right to the homeownersâ address, and many keep it right on the coffee table for themselves and guests to flip through anytime.
Homeowners should subscribe to this magazine because they are quickly and easily able to find quality Minnesota based home improvement companies. Only home improvement companies will be found in the issues. This includes carpet cleaners, gutter cleaning services, and more. Services can easily be found without the distraction of dry cleaners, dentists, or other non-home improvement industries.
Angela said she once had a homeowner call in to say how great The Home Mag was because they were going to head online and start calling people for information, but the one-stop-shop magazine gave them everything they needed right there. It was amazing! The Home Mag can save customers tons of time, money, and energy when they donât have to search and do the research themselves.
What companies are featured in The Home Mag?
Companies that work in the home building and construction industry would be featured in The Home Mag. They include Minnesota based companies that would be able to cater to the Twin Cities area homes, no national businesses in the industry would be in there. Companies may show up on multiple occasions in the magazine, depending on how many services they offer. For example, a typical job for Northface may be exteriors, siding, restoration, roofing, and storm damage repair. So, they could be featured in multiple categories amongst other companies specific to those services.
What brands does The Home Mag feature?
The Home Mag may feature certain brands within the industry. For example, Northface Construction focuses on using GAF roofing shingles, GAF siding, LP siding, and EDCO siding and metal roofing products. Those brands could be brought to light within their respective categories in their magazine. Angela mentioned that they donât have anyone in The Home Mag right now under the metal roofing category, and those opportunities are great for companies like Northface Construction. They could be a pioneer in the metal roofing category for homeowners to see!
The Home Mag also focuses on including local companies such as LP Louisiana Pacific, which is located up in Two Harbors, MN, as well as EDCO siding and metal roofing, which was founded in 1946 in Minnesota.
The Home Mag booth at events like The Home and Garden Show offers home builders, industry folks, and consumers to stop by and get tons of information. Plus, they often promote the companies featured in their magazine at the shows, so people can easily walk over to their booths at the show as well.
Homeowners, contractors, and business owners can subscribe for magazine delivery, or receive a digital copy, at minnesota.thehomemag.com. We hope this was helpful for our current and future clients, as well as our friends in the industry. As always, for more information or to start your home project, you can call Northface Construction at 763-433-2269.

The Northface Standard: Setting The Bar For Our Employees
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/the-northface-standard/
The Northface Standard: Setting The Bar For Our Employees
Today Josh is talking with Derek from the Northface production department. Theyâre going to talk about the Northface Standard, and how we maintain a certain level of quality in our work.
youtube
Josh: Derek, can you tell us how we maintain our Northface Standard in all of our new projects?
Derek: Yeah, we have a huge checklist of things that we adhere to, making sure we have everything we need and are following the scope of work. Also, one of the main things is when we first arrive at the job. We want to make sure that everything is tidy and everything is going to be protected. One of the things we do to protect that stuff is that we send plywood out to every job to cover up windows or anything else you are going to want to be protected, and avoid falling debris.
Josh: All of that happens before the job starts, so what about during the project? What do we do to keep that Northface Standard while on the job?
Derek: We are going to make sure that the crew is maintaining everything we need to stick to building codes and making sure they are giving you the quality of work that you need.
Josh: So, we keep it pretty clean during construction, right?
Derek: Yeah, so whenever we come back to the job site, or anytime we are on the job, weâre walking around the house making sure debris is kept either on the tarps or in the dumpster, and especially out of your neighborâs yard.
Josh: Thatâs important! We definitely donât want to tick off the neighbors, do we? So what about when the project is finished, how do we uphold the Northface Standard on our projects?
Derek: We start from the ground up making sure lines are clean, and once weâre on the roof we dig in to make sure everything is installed correctly and making sure we are going to pass inspection. Just making sure things look good.
Josh: And, an important part of clean up is making sure thereâs not a lot of nails in your yard. So all of our employees whether theyâre in sales, production, and myself includedâeveryone has a magnet, broom, and dustpan with them. We are constantly walking around picking up nails and cleaning to make sure it looks like we were never there, by the time weâre out of there. We hold ourselves to a higher standard and we call this The Northface Standard.
Itâs important to us that we follow the same set of rules and guidelines on every job, so we can guarantee the same quality of work every single time. With every employee following the Northface Standard, we can maintain a unified system of quality which leads to happier customers and employees.
Having The Northface Standard also allows us to fill in every gap from picking up every nail and piece of debris at client homes to double-checking code compliance. The standard gives us an all-hands-on-deck attitude that brings everyone together and ensures we cover our basesâleaving customers satisfied after every project.
At Northface Construction, weâve built our company to circulate around our values and our customers. We strive to serve our customers at the highest level of satisfaction in the industry and believe our personal touch adds so much to every project we complete. The Classic Home Designs That Have Endured Through The Years, And Why They Work So Well
New Post has been published on https://treasuredspaces.com/classic-home-designs/
The Classic Home Designs That Have Endured Through The Years, And Why They Work So Well
Some home designs never get old.
Certain architecture practices, interior designs, and layouts have stood the test of time and are still relevant today.
So why do these classic home designs work so well? What is it that keeps people coming back?
Today weâre diving in to learn about some of these designs, what makes them timeless, and how you can incorporate them into your home.
What Makes a Classic Home Design?
There are a few different criteria that home designs need to have to be classic and timeless designs. Without specific criteria, we wouldnât be able to differentiate between classic, modern, contemporary, or other designs.
Letâs break it down by category so that itâs easy to sort through while planning for your next home project.
Why Chose a Classic and Timeless Design?
There are many ways that you can design and build a home, but there are only a few ways that have stood the test of time. Classic designs have elements within them that are functional, elegant, and serve a purpose.
Classic designs have been developed over the years to solve problems and serve specific purposes. Theyâre built with the consumer in mind and seek to bring comfort from the outside and inside. One example might be the way that contemporary design can, at times, feel cold because of the straight lines and sharp edges. A classic design is going to be warm and inviting in the way that itâs built and designed.Â
Regional Differences
While some similarities exist between different regions, there are various characteristics and diverse influences. Take, for instance, some of the classic designs used in the southern United States. Southern colonial homes originated during the colonial times (hence the name). The use of massive pillars with an overall rounded design reminded people of the Greek Revival architecture.
Some places throughout the country have also used colonial-style architecture, and in some ways, you could argue that any of the variations would be a timeless choice.
But beyond that, there many regional differences as a Spanish style home just doesnât fit in a midwest neighborhood in the same way that farmhouse might.
In this blog, weâre going to focus on midwest classic home designs.
Classic Architecture
Thereâs nothing more foundational to a house than itâs foundation. But a close second is the architecture throughout the home. From the peaks of the rooftops to the placement of windows, every detail makes the house what it is and helps you better understand what inspired the home to be designed the way it was.
There are a few key elements of architecture that we should talk about.
Roof Lines
The classical elements within classic design have shaped the ways that the roof lines have been designed. In traditional architecture, youâll notice that there is one focal point in the design. Often on top of the house, itâs a peak in the roof, and at eye level, it could be a front door thatâs placed perfectly in the center. Check out the examples below.
This home has a central roof system and a very symmetrical layout to the windows and doors. It resembles many of the classic home designs and styles on the east coast and is considered to be a cape cod style home. Also, notice the similarities in the windows throughout. Theyâre not too fancy, and in some ways, that makes this house even more inviting.
The second home is much more modern in the way that itâs designed but still holds many classical inspirations. Notice the rounded entryway, the central peak in the roof system, and even the pillars like the cape cod style. The windows on this home are slightly more contemporary. Due to advances in technology, the windows are placed in ways that wouldnât have otherwise been possible in an earlier time. Nevertheless, there is still a very structured and warm feel to the places that the windows are found.
Classic Interior Designs
Interior design is another element of the classic home that seems never to change. Grandmaâs rocking chair is still a favorite, and farmhouse decor never has an off-year. There is a science and reason behind this. As much as weâd like to think itâs just because it looks good, thereâs a reason we keep coming back. Hereâs why.
Simplicity
There was a time when people thought it was better to have walls dividing rooms, and adding dropdowns in the floor plans seemed elegant. Today, as youâll see on most of the home design tv shows, knocking down walls and raising floors back up creates a more straightforward home. These simple lines and open floor plans leave homeowners and guests feeling welcomed and invited into a space. Thereâs no longer a need for intricate interior designs as more and more people are seeking usability.
Durability
Many trendy designs use elements that donât last. But classic home design seeks to incorporate elements that are going to last decades or centuries. Take, for instance, a good tile floor can last almost forever if you take care of it. While on the other hand, a more trendy pattern in vinyl flooring is sure to wear quickly.
Adaptability
Classic home designs will also offer adaptability. For example, the simplicity within a living room would make it possible for the couch to be moved, and a table to be moved in for a dinner party. With an open floor plan and simple designs, the possibilities within the space you have are endless.
This makes for not only a functional home but also a home that can adapt to your circumstances.
Cost-Effectiveness
By choosing a classic home design, you are choosing a cost-effective product. Sometimes it can cost more to choose the durable elements of classic design such as flooring. But, in the long run, these elements pay off. Because they arenât replaced as often, and things arenât changed. Youâre left with a more cost-effective solution.
Classic Decor and Furnishings
Classic decor holds many of the same characteristics that interior layouts and designs do. Youâll notice very simple and easy to arrange furniture. Things that complement each other and leave the space feeling very open. Letâs see what it takes to have a timeless and classic home design.
Notice that as we go throughout the things that make up timeless decor, there are almost constant similarities to the exterior and architecture of the home.
Create/Find the Focal Point
Every room has to have a focal point of some kind. It doesnât have to be obvious or a large item, but there should be something. Maybe itâs a fireplace, tv or entertainment system. It could be a desk, or even the chandelier and dinner table. By finding a focal point, you can work around it. Maybe itâs how you place the furniture or where you place a painting or picture on the wall. You donât have to be an interior decorator to make a room look incredible. All you need is a good sense of what the focal point is and what you want to do with the room.
Use Classic Patterns
Classic patterns, whether it be blankets, rugs, your couch, or chair, all make a difference. Everything in the room is going to give it a feel. You can control that feel by sticking to classic patterns that wonât let your space feel dated in any way.
Choose High-Quality Items
Just like designing the interior elements, quality is a must. Not only does quality give you durability, but often high-quality items arenât as trendy because they simply last longer. Using high-quality items means that youâll be able to decorate once and leave those focal points and elements in place for an extended period of time. This helps to create a timeless feel to the space and can also give you some nostalgia.
Use Symmetry Throughout
Symmetry throughout the space gives you a very welcoming and open feel. You can achieve this by placing items evenly around the focal point in the room. Maybe that means having two sofas or two chairs in the room. The goal is to achieve the sense that nothing is missing. The room is perfectly proportioned and fits just right.
Think Long Term
Lastly, while youâre designing or thinking through this project, you have to think long term. The goal isnât to have it there for a few weeks, but instead to stick with that same design choice for a few decades. You want to create a feeling within each room that you donât want to change. Timeless and classic home design has the power to stay just like it is and never feel dated or old.

A Swisher Family Introduction: Meet The Fam
Hey Everyone!
As you probably know, Josh Swisher is the owner of Northface Construction, and he and his wife Katie popped in to say hello and talk about what it means to them to be a family-oriented business.
youtube
Family has always been the core of the business. At 18 years old, living in his parentsâ basement, Josh started his business. He absolutely could not have followed his dreams without the love and support of his own family. Fast forward years later, after Katie and Josh got married, family continued to flood into the business and be a priority at Northface Construction.
Katie was able to join Josh in running the administrative tasks of the business, where her strengths lied, and Joshâs didnât. This only helped boost Northface Construction towards what it is today. Without that family bond and support, it couldâve been a real struggle.
Now, a decade into the business, Katie and Josh are proud to be a family-owned business and work to make their employees and their families feel as welcome as they can. Having a young child (and adorable pup) of their own, they understand how raising a family can be tough sometimes. And they emphasize that family will always come first.
They want their employees to feel comfortable taking time off to spend with their families, and they definitely empathize with having to leave to handle a family emergency. In fact, they had an employee whose daycare was canceled last minute, so they told them âbring the kids to the meeting!â
Family has played such an integral part of running the business, that they even made it one of their three core values.
Beyond the joy of working with your loved ones every day, having a family-owned business has many benefits for both the employees and your customers. It is already built on a strong foundation of trust and compassion. Customers can see that a family-owned business comes from a tight-knit core of people, and a lot of people really appreciate that commitment in a small business.
Not only do we at Northface Construction love representing ourselves as a family-owned, family-oriented, and community-driven business, but we love doing it together!

Our Three Core Values & What They Mean For Northface Construction
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/northface-core-values/
Our Three Core Values & What They Mean For Northface Construction
At Northface Construction, we have three core values:
We are passionate.
We are family and community-oriented.
We are constantly learning.
youtube
How did we come up with our core values?
Core values should represent a companyâs fundamental beliefs and work as a guide for how they reach goals and do business. Since we wanted our core values to represent our company as a whole, we came up with them as a team.
We did an exercise with all of our employees, bringing everyone together to answer some key questions that could help determine what our core values should be. We asked what matters to us as a team? What matters to us individually? What matters to Northface Construction? What sets us apart from the rest? And what makes us passionate about what we do?
We are constantly learning.
The first core value we chose was that we are constantly learning. Continuing education is a major part of working at Northface, and in this industry in general. There are always going to be new and better ways to do things. Itâs important not only to continue to learn more and get better but to want to learn more and get better at what you do.
As a business owner, Josh knows the importance of learning from mistakes and failures and seeing those situations as opportunities to learn and grow. We want our employees to have the mindset that there is something to learn from every situation. If you donât have that growth mindset, you probably arenât right for our team. Constantly learning is an important core value to us, as it means we are always striving to be better.
We are passionate.
Our second core value was a no brainer. We are passionate. Just hearing our team talk about what working at Northface means to them, showed us how passionate they are. The day to day interactions with clients is what drives the business, and is what we are most passionate about. We care about our customers and love getting to know them in the process. Being passionate about what we do reflects on our customers and has an added value that we canât put a price on.
We are family & community oriented.
Being a small business, we know our employees very closely. They become near and dear to our hearts, and we become like a tight-knit family. We also strive to maintain a work-life balance for our employees, because thatâs what working is all aboutâbeing able to support and spend time with our families.
We love being a company that acknowledges right away that we are a family & community oriented business. Living and working within our community is important to us, and if we arenât able to give back, then we are doing our community a disservice. We love to be able to get to know our customers, who are essentially our neighbors and just an extension of the Northface family.
What is the benefit of having solid core values?
Setting clear core values can establish a guideline for your employees to follow, that reminds them why they do what they do. In our case, we simplified our core values to 3 simple phrases that represent us the best. We know that we have passion, are constantly learning, and love our family and community. But having those core values is a great reminder and a beacon to follow every day, helping us to strive for the best. They also give new or prospective employees an idea of what we are all about and a chance to see how they fit into the culture.
There is no magic number of core values a company needs to have. However, being able to find a few core values that truly represent your company culture can be more effective than listing ten smaller goals you want to obtain. With five or fewer core values, your employees can know them, repeat them, and live them every day.
Keep in mind; core values can change. Just like people, businesses change, and your core values may continue to shift to fit your ever-changing and ever-growing business. Nevertheless, always make sure they speak to your businessâs culture and vision.
At Northface Construction, we want to be known as the company which is the most passionate, that never stops learning and improving, and that loves being a part of their community. We are proud to be your community-focused local roofing company. Feel free to reach out to us anytime!

8 Finished Basement Ideas To Motivate & Inspire The Change You Need In Your Basement

8 Finished Basement Ideas To Motivate & Inspire The Change You Need In Your Basement
Sometimes basements just start to collect things. All the unwanted stuff that you havenât wanted to show to other people has slowly become the âstuffâ that fills every corner in your basement. This is especially true if you havenât finished your basement.
Itâs never a âbadâ thing to have a basement full of stuff. Sometimes itâs just what you have to do to get the rest of the house organized. But, if youâre tired of your basement being a catch-all and you want to do something cool with all that space, then this is the blog for you.
Weâre going to be looking at some fantastic ideas to turn your unfinished or unused basement into one of the coolest spots in your house.
Letâs jump in!
What Do You Want Out Of Your Basement?
Before we get too far, we must ask ourselves this question. What do we want to do with our basement? There are so many different directions that we can go when weâre revamping a space that we have to know what type of style and feel weâre going for.
For example, a basement could take on a theme different than that of the rest of your house, or it could be a kidâs playroom. Whatever it ends up being, you want to love it so that you feel like youâre getting the most out of the space and so that youâre proud of it and can show it off to all of your friends.
Preparing for the Project
Before you can start renovating, itâs crucial to do a thorough inspection of the space to ensure that there is no water damage. After youâve checked the interior walls and floors, youâre going to want to take a look outside at the foundation of the house to make sure that itâs in good shape. The main thing you want to look for is cracks in the concrete that would let water in. One last place to check is your gutters and watershed areas. Just make sure that the water is going away from your house.
If, by chance, you found any water damage, then it would be good to schedule an inspection with a professional contractor to assess the damage.Â
1. Basement Kitchens and Bars
Who doesnât want to have a small kitchen or bar in their basement? Adding something like this can create a considerable amount of value and turns the space into a great hangout spot. Sometimes the thing that scares people away from kitchen and bar remodels the most is the price point and a lack of inspiration within the space they have.
The best part about adding a bar or kitchen is that you can take it any direction youâd like. From modern and sleek designs to cozy and homestyle. From coke and beer memorabilia to full-on floor to ceiling wine racks, a bar can be taken any direction you want it to go. Thatâs why itâs a great addition to your remodel project and can be a focal point in the space overall.
2. Use Furniture, Decor, + Wall Color to Set the Tone
No doubt, there is likely some furniture and decor in every room throughout your house. Even an unfinished basement might have old chairs or a table that you couldnât bring yourself to throw away.
The reality is that the furniture and decor you choose for a room can dramatically change the experience that is offered. Youâve probably been in one of those basements that has natural wood panels on the walls and grandpas old plaid patterned couch. Thereâs nothing wrong with basements like this, but most likely, you want a space that is more engaging and not quite as nostalgic.
Hereâs an article breaking down some of the design trends for 2020 that are sure to help inspire you the next time you go looking for furniture.
The last thing to think about is colors for your walls. It can be tricky, and often we revert to white as the tried and true. Here are some more unique 2020 color trends.
3. Guest Bedroom
If you donât already have a guest bedroom in your home, the basement can be the perfect place to add one. The best part about having a guest bedroom in the basement is that itâs completely separate from the rest of the house. You wonât have to worry about your guests not feeling at home because theyâll have their bedroom and bathroom to use for the duration of their stay.
You might think to yourself, âIâve never had any guests in my home for the night.â If thatâs you, then thatâs okay. Maybe you wouldnât often have a guest often or ever, but by adding a basement to your home, you can increase your resale value dramatically and also open up your home to more potential buyers.
4. Home Office
If youâve been feeling a lack of productivity at home or youâre just sick of working on bills at the kitchen table, then adding a home office might be the perfect thing for you.
One of the best parts about adding a home office is that the project can be straightforward. All you need is a desk, chair, and some inspiring quotes, right? That can be right, but there are a lot of things that you can do to make the space feel just right. Something really popular lately is creating a modern feel to the classic desk space. Incorporating nice lighting, good wall colors, and even some windows for natural light (if possible) can make a home office one of the favorite spaces in your home.
5. Add a Fireplace
If you donât already have a cozy space in your home, then you might think about adding a fireplace to your basement. With the modern options of gas and electric fireplaces, you can add them to almost any space.
Having a fireplace can also help you heat your basement, and if you can purchase an efficient model, you might even find yourself saving some money on the heating bill every month.
6. Entertainment Center + Game Room
Something that has become more and more popular throughout the digital age is entertainment centers. Often, these spaces are located in the basements because there fewer windows, which means less glare on your tv screen and the opportunity to use a projector.
If you do decide to go the route of a digital entertainment center, the possibilities are almost endless. From crazy virtual reality systems to the perfect spot to watch the big game, these spaces never seem to disappoint.
Within the idea of entertainment, you might consider a family game room. Playing games with the family is a great pass time and a great way to build relationships with friends as well.
The last thing along the lines of entertainment/game room is adding a space for a pool table or ping-pong table. A pool table can bring an awesome vibe to your space and really can fit nicely within the bar vibe. You can even add a chandelier over it to complete the esthetic. Just make sure that if you put a pool or ping-pong table in that there is an ample amount of space around them to enjoy playing without hitting any walls.
7. Library
A library isnât just for the book worm type. It can also be perfect for those who might work as teachers, professors, or a great addition to a home office both for looks and usefulness.
When considering a library, try to think about how you can incorporate different elements such as furniture, a fireplace, and possibly lighting or some natural light to help complete the perfect reading space. Libraries can be very inspiring spaces, and no doubt will add some positive energy to your space.
8. Gym
One of the significant benefits of having a home gym is the money that youâre going to save in a gym membership. Some gyms cost upwards of $30 a month. That might not seem like a lot, but after five years, thatâs $1,800. Why not put that money into the value of your home by creating a workout space.
Pro-tip: If you have a basement home gym and basement kitchen or bar, include a blender to make some high-energy smoothies after your workouts!

Remodel vs. Renovation: What's The Difference and Why Does It Matter?
New Post has been published on https://treasuredspaces.com/remodel-vs-renovation/
Remodel vs. Renovation: What's The Difference and Why Does It Matter?

You may or may not know this, but there is a difference between remodeling and renovation, and it matters when you are both budgeting and when you are talking to a contractor.Â
By definition, renovate means: to restore to a former better state (as by cleaning, repairing, or rebuilding), while remodeling means: Â to alter the structure of.Â
The big difference is that if you are renovating something, your bathroom for example, you are repairing or restoring it. If you were to remodel it, you would be demoing and rebuilding to change the appearance.Â
A renovation changes the look of a room, without altering its layout or intended use.Â
Renovating a room or rooms in your home can be a great way to refresh it with simple updates. It can be far more affordable and DIY-friendly than a remodel, and there are several ways to renovate a room that can make it look completely new.Â
New Paint Job
Itâs amazing what a new coat of paint can do to change the look of a room. Itâs also an easy DIY project and sometimes doesnât need much more done to the room than that. A few things to note is that you should protect your molding, especially original wood with lots of painting tape, so you donât have to chip it off and scratch the molding. For darker colors, make sure to prime enough to ensure your new color can cover the existing paint.Â
If you need to remove wallpaper or borders, follow the proper steps to avoid damaging the wall or ceiling. Soak it well and use the proper tools to remove it before beginning the prime and paint work.Â
Sometimes choosing a color can be difficult, but it can be helpful to shop for linens or other decor before landing on a color. Also, know that you can take any number of paint samples home from the hardware store to take with you shopping, and even tape to the walls to get a good idea of what the color you want may look like in the light of the room.Â
Swapping out Cabinet Hardware
One of the easiest things you can do to revamp your kitchen or bathroom is to update the cabinet hardware. Nothing can get outdated quicker than the drawer and cabinet handles. They simply unscrew and can be swapped out, no problem. You can often get lucky and find hardware secondhand from other peopleâs renovations that theyâve updated their hardware as well. Otherwise, they can run anywhere from $1 to $20 a piece.Â
New Countertops and Backsplashes
Sometimes, you can find countertops and backsplashes secondhand as well, or in showrooms that hold hardware store overflow for lower prices. This will require some demo of your existing countertops, but can be a great weekend group project and can absolutely transform your kitchen or bathroom, without having to rip up cabinets.Â
Backsplashes can be tiled the old fashioned way, which may require some expertise or experience to get right. You can also buy stick-on backsplash sheets that look a lot like real marble or stone but at a fraction of the price.Â
New Flooring
Putting in a new floor, or refinishing existing can be an incredible update that can make a room look like it was fully updated. Something like new floors can end up being costly, and require some labor depending on what route is taken. Refinishing wood floors can be a major upgrade, and it is possible to do yourself, but takes time and may put a room out of commission for a while, as it gets done.Â
Bathroom floors can be a great update and can be done over the weekend. Chances are, the existing tiles or laminate flooring can be relatively easy to pull up. New modern flooring for bathrooms can be laminate wood flooring that looks like the real thing but will resist rot and work with moisture. It can be easier to cut around baseboards and toilets as well.Â
Updating Plumbing and Light Fixtures
Getting new light fixtures doesnât require any extra electrical work or wiring for those DIYers. It can be an easy swap out between the ceiling lights or wall sconces by simply detaching from the wiring connections and plugging in a new, compatible fixture.Â
Updating plumbing can include a new sink, dishwasher, laundry, or other appliance updates. A lot of places offer delivery and installation for an extra fee but can be just what a room needs to bring it up to that next level of style and functionality.Â
Remodeling requires altering the structure, size, or layout of a room.Â
Remodeling is much more invasive than a renovation and requires more materials and labor. It can be more costly because anything past demolition, may require hiring a professional team.Â
Demolition and Removing Structures
The most fun part about remodeling your home can be demo day! You can take out those aggressions by swinging a sledgehammer into that ugly, cumbersome wall you always wanted to get rid of. Make a day of demoing walls or structures, because this is something you can do without hiring a team. Just ask your family or friends to help in exchange for pizza or beer.Â
When removing cabinets, you can often pry it delicately enough to save countertops, cabinets, and built-ins and re-sell it or re-purpose it after the remodel.Â
Make sure to turn off the electrical or plumbing in the demo areas to avoid any mishaps. Watch out for walls that have outlets and wiring that can be damaged by demoing the wall incorrectly.Â
Layout Planning
Hire a professional to help you plan the construction and layout. We have a program that allows 3D renderings of your new space before doing one bit of demolition. Ensuring this is done, with proper measurements, materials planning, and budgeting can help the remodeling go as smoothly as possible, without any surprises.Â
Framing and Drywall
After the demolition is done, all extra drywall bits and framing that is not supporting structures will be removed and the framing can be re-built. Reframing can be done in any room, whether you are tearing down a wall to make more room, or building up a wall to re-configure a roomâs shape or for an addition. Drywall and insulation will be done last, followed by putty, primer, and paint.Â
Rewiring & Electrical Work
A lot of modern homes built in the last few years have a lot more outlets per wall, compared to older homes. Rewiring and adding more outlets can be a great way to remodel a room where you donât have to rely on where power or light fixtures are, dictate the layout of your room. This is an opportunity to reconfigure the electrical work in your home to work for any furniture or design configuration. Plus, an outdated home could stand to have the electrical checked and updated to prevent any fires or other issues.Â
New or Updated Plumbing
Updating the plumbing can be one of the more costly parts of remodeling your home. When reconfiguring a bathroom or kitchen, you donât need to use the old plumbing or plumbing fixtures. A good plumber will be able to work with you throughout the entire process of remodeling to properly configure where and how the plumbing will go in to make it the most functional and stylish for your design.Â
DuctworkÂ
Getting new ductwork installed isnât always a necessity during a remodel; in fact, you can likely get away with getting your ducts and vents cleaned. Ductwork will be determined by foot and size when it comes to cost. The ductwork planning will also take place when the contractor works on layout planning.Â
So remember, when it comes time to re-design a part of your home, you have a few options that donât always require demoing walls or cabinets. A lot can be done with updates that donât include invasive work. On the other hand, Treasured Spaces and local professional contractors can work through an entire beginning to end planning to remodel a room or multiple rooms in your home to give you the dream house you always wanted.Â

Common Questions About Metal Roofing
New Post has been published on https://northfaceconstruction.com/metal-roofing/
Common Questions About Metal Roofing
We are on-site at a home in Delano, MN, that is currently under construction. They are getting a new metal roof installed, and we thought that would be the perfect time to get ahead of some common questions we hear about metal roofs!
youtube
This client, in particular, is having EDCO slate metal shingles installed. EDCO Products are a major staple in metal roofing products, and is located right here in Minnesota! Started in 1946, in Hopkins, MN, EDCO continues to be one of the oldest running domestic metal fabricators in the nation. It is also the largest U.S. manufacturer of pre-finished metal siding. Their full comprehensive line includes exterior siding, roofing materials, soffits, fascia, and gutter systems.
Metal siding and roofing comes in all sorts of colors, styles, and types. First, a commonly used metal roofing used on pole barns and barn homes youâll see in rural areas, with exposed fasteners. The second type is similar to those pole barn metal roofing panels, but itâs a standing seam roof, with no exposed fasteners. Those will be found more often than not on commercial properties. It also takes a lot of skill to install these, and they require making handles on-site. A third type of metal shingle is granular coated aluminum or steel.
This customer we are working with, chose EDCO slate metal shingles, which have a lot of benefits. They are built to last a very long time, and are considered a life-long roof. They are incredibly resilient to hail and wind damage. These homeowners, in particular, have replaced their roof three times before due to weather damage, and this should be the last roof they ever install. Compared to your average shingle, a metal roof can cost a lot more upfront, but will last much longer.
When you look at the investment in terms of durability and life-span, the cost savings are massive, and the increase in property value helps make the decision to go metal is a no-brainer. A metal roof could far outlast the life of a homeowner, and is incredibly sustainable when you consider how much waste is not being produced with roofing materials that last considerably less time.
EDCO Slate Steel shingles can look just like any other shingle but with the immense built-in strength and resilience of the metal. They offer almost 100 different colors and styles that can work with any color or style siding. If youâre looking for a long-term investment for your roof, sustainable metal roofing is the way to go. Give us a call to schedule an estimate!

Hays Take On: Patrick's Bakery
The Edina Southdale area has been extremely popular for a long time with tons of food options in the Galleria, Southdale Mall food court, and tons of other popular options like Tavern on France and others, youâve probable tried them all if you frequent this area⌠However, there are a few hidden gems that donât get discussed as often and one of those is Patrickâs Bakery. A quieter spot that can be a nice change of pace from the bustling mall life thatâs just a short distance away.
The Place
Patrickâs at Southdale Square is just North East of Southdale off of Xerxes and 66th in the back corner of the strip mall area. Walking in youâll notice the split between restaurant and bakery, with tons of baked options on the right, the line to the register down the middle, and booths and tables to the left. The atmosphere is the perfect combination of bakery with a relaxed atmosphere but just enough energy thatâs provided from an open view kitchen to keep a restaurant feeling. A great mix between these two keeps things easy going while not putting you to sleep.
The Product
With lots of great options to choose from youâll find a mixture of everything here that makes for a great afternoon bite to eat. For starters there soups and salads change regularly but come with fresh ingredients and enough to satisfy a regular lunch hunger. They also feature a variety of sandwiches both hot and cold. We had to dive into their BBQ chicken sandwich that came on a half flat bread half white bread sandwich with mixed greens that had tons of flavor while still feeling clean. On their burger/hot sandwich side we also enjoy the incredible BBQ style Philly that comes on a nice soft white hoagie and is stuffed will all of the good stuff. You also canât forget a side of their skinny fries to complete your full meal. After your meal you can swing by the bakery side and grab one of many styles of donuts or other delicious pastries they offer.
    The Take
If youâre looking for a breath of fresh air from the crazy mall action of Southdale and Galleria, Patrickâs is the perfect place for a sit down and a solid bite to eat. Even if you just need a small snack youâre sure to find a baked good to refuel your daily adventure.
