A Spark that Won't Go Out Chapter 11

Got another chapter out a little sooner than I was expecting. Whisper and Surge go on an impromptu rescue mission, build some bridges, and lose a lot of blood.

Ack. Truth be told, though i do like my idea of sonurge, i guess because my idea is very specific and circumstantial, i cannot find much art or fic that i like of them haha. The tag on twitter at the very least is so fluff centric or has Surge so damsel in distress-y that my brain cannot even wrap around it.

Surge fluff moments are already hard won for me just because of the way she is that seeing it with sonic specifically im like “whos that????” “She would sooner break her own legs than let him carry her and be so ‘kya’ about it.”

This isnt like a judgement call or anything, people are free to draw and write these things however they want. At the end of the day, the crap i draw is just as non canonical. Thats why we are drawing it and not IDW.

Just thinkin its not somethin im gonna draw very much past that first one I did cause as a ship im feelin like its interesting in concept but doesnt rank too high for me.

More likely to draw them platonically if thats somethin you followed me for.

Okay!! (So i am gonna bring up my Whispurge headcanon a tiny bit too just because they do go hand in hand for me, sorry lol. Just dont read past the dash if you dont care about it.)

The sonurge dynamic for me is kind of near entirely one sided as far as like actual romantic interest. Like for sonic its a case of wanting to challenge and tease her to keep her mind off things and rile her up in a friendly way. Maybe a little flirty but for him its nothing serious. He enjoys their banter and their rivalry is a fun one.

But for surge i think its a complete case of crossed wires. The internal battle with her programming that puts him in a place of fixation in her mind by default but now is fluctuating rapidly between “i hate him so fucking much” and “i think he’s clearly amazing and i think i like him”. But either way its a struggle with the thought that the only reason he’s on her mind this aggressively might just be because its what she was made to think about.

I don’t think sonic would know about this internal conflict for a hot minute since i think she wouldn’t explain until it peaked the boiling point but the second he figures out how deep this goes he wouldnt keep this going. Hes not an asshole like that so ultimately this is my Toxic Doomed Ship where they have to eventually keep distance anyway by the end.

Even still when its good i think its really good, its just never going to last without Surge having some kind of breakdown.

Comparatively i think my whispurge headcanons also play on this rivalry dynamic between whisper and surge (definitely a more aggressive hands on one than the one with sonic. Fisticuffs followed periodically by adrenaline induced smoochin) but with those two its definitively, unquestionably a choice they’re both making of their own volition to interact like this. Even if it does carry some doubt or confusion on whispers part mostly about whether she really can trust Surge.

I think two commiserating aggro types can find some comfort with that and ultimately help each other be better than what they are by both of them having pretty tragic pasts they can relate to. (I think tangle and whispers dynamic is also extremely important but she could use another angle like that). Something i dont think Sonic is in a position to ever fully do. At least not until surge already gets all her shit sorted.

Why did i get horribly attached to not only a rare pair, but one in which half of it has a more than already basically canon ship that’s really popular. If noone else draws or gets into whispurge so i can stop having to feed myself i think ill die. How do people do this.

Thinking ahead, there's going to be a part in my fic relatively soon where Surge addresses that little speech he gives her which everyone loves to relitigate into the earth and... I dunno, I guess I'll just never see the issue with it.

Sonic is in the wrong in that scene, imo, but that's part of why I like it. You get the whole Imposter Syndrome miniseries where you see Surge and Kit living absolutely miserably, being used, abused, and in general just having the worst life.

Then Sonic comes along and (briefly, let's be honest, people exaggerate how long said speech is) touches on his morals in maybe the worst way he possibly could. I don't find anything he says particularly out of character, or even untrue!

It's basically a character statement, but delivered to the one person who is not only opposed to those morals, but whose horrible life is currently a side effect of the way Sonic is living his. He's literally -talking down to her from a pedestal-. He was wrong. Right speech, maybe, but wrong person to give it to. And that's fine! Heroes don't always have to be right, especially ones who have a theme song reminding you that he doesn't care who is wrong or right.

Sometimes it feels like folks want Sonic to be this detached entity that barely interfaces with the plot and that is super boring to me. You can get away with it in games, but in a medium that is largely about dialogue and character moments, I can never get mad at writers trying to explore and make the titular character slightly more interesting than "shows up, says wisecracks and punches a robot, runs away"
