i just did the BOFA thing to my mum and she goes “that’s very rude” and I said “i’m sorry, i meant it as a parody” and she said “of what?” then i said “a parod-eez nuts” and i heard my dad laugh from the other room
Hey Mark, I hope you’re doing OK. May your father rest in peace. I have a question regarding life. For most of my life, I have believed that the key to living a fulfilling life is to do what makes you feel happy. And for a long time, Magic has been that key for me. However, as I get older, I am beginning to feel less fulfilled by the sheer pursuit of happiness, as if something else is missing. (Not to say that I’m enjoying Magic any less… I’m a player for life!) My question is… what do you believe makes for a fulfilling life?
I think besides being happy, having a sense of purpose is important. Here’s a thought exercise (that I mentioned doing when my Dad died) that I call the It’s a Wonderful Life reflection. What would the world be like if you were never born? What things did you influence? And this includes your impact on other people.
Part of having a sense of purpose is doing something that positively affects others in a way that makes your life have meaning.
Feldon of the Third Path is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of storytelling in Magic: The Gathering.
Every part of this card comes together to tell you Feldon's story without ever overtly saying anything.
The art depicts him as a sturdy man, used to labor, and the workshop around him supports that. His hair is dark, but his beard is gray. He's getting older, but there's life in him yet. He gazes intensely at at the machined face of an automaton's head.
His ability doesn't do anything so gauche as bringing a card back from the graveyard. No, he targets a card in the graveyard -- someone, something that has died -- and and creates a copy, a facsimile, that's an artifact in addition to whatever it was before. But his creation is imperfect. It doesn't last. At the end of the turn, you sacrifice the copy. Greater magics than what Feldon posseses are required to make it stay more than a moment.
And then the flavor text. "She will come back to me." Powerful. Defiant. Sorrowful. Broken? Who can say, we haven't heard Feldon himself speak the words. But he lost someone, and he is determined, driven to bring her back the only way he knows how.
We're never told what the first two paths are, even if we can assume, but Feldon very clearly indicates what the Third Path is.
making art is just like showering………can’t get up and do it, can’t stop when you’ve started. you want to crawl out of your skin if you don’t do it often enough. everything in the world is the exact same
Funniest part of Magic the Gathering lore is the plane where vampires are evil Catholics, and they finally find and revive Vampire Jesus (who is a woman). And Vampire Jesus goes “What the fuck is wrong with you all? This is literally the opposite of what I said to do. Vampirism is a curse to take on to serve a burden of the church and you all are just using it for power and racism?”
And then so many vampires were like “But I want power, not responsibility” that they went “Can’t believe Vampire Jesus was wrong about Vampire Jesus’s teachings, we should schism.”
