Part of Rio Grande do Sul (south of the country) has been hit by HEAVY rain since Monday, nonstop rain. This has caused an extreme inundation all around the territory! The rivers and sewers can't handle that much water, this makes the levels go up, rapidly.

At the moment, 235 of the 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected. 23 thousand people were displaced, 7.949 in shelters, 74 injured, 38 deaths, 74 missing.

the green represents 'normal', the yellow 'warning', the orange 'flooded', red 'severe flood'.

I'm gonna show some pictures here and feel free to google some yourself! But let me warn you: there is some footage of people getting carried away by the flood, children being trapped under landslides and animals drowning.

most of these are from my town, there are Instagram pages documenting everything and reposting donations pages. I myself will not share these pages as I cannot confirm their veracity. But the government of the state has a transparent fund for those of Brazil who can lend a hand:

Fun little math trick I find really helpful: the ratio of a mile to a kilometer is within 1% of the Golden Ratio. That means that if you have a good memory for Fibonacci numbers (1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89) you can convert pretty accurately by taking consecutive Fibonacci numbers.

For example, 89 kilometers is really close to 55 miles (55.3). Or, say you need to convert 26 miles to kilometers: 26 can be written as 21 plus 5, so taking the next Fibonacci number up gives 34 and 8, meaning it should be around 42 kilometers. Sure enough, it's 41.8 km!
