TOKYO: Thousands of demonstrators formed a human chain around Japan´s parliament in Tokyo on Sunday, protesting the planned construction of a new US airbase on the southern island of Okinawa.

The protesters, who organisers said numbered about 15,000, surrounded the parliament building holding banners reading "No to Henoko", in the latest rally against the controversial base.

The authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang say they have broken up 181 terrorist groups since they launched a security crackdown a year ago.

The government has blamed a series of violent attacks in the region and other areas of China on separatist Islamic militants from Xinjiang.

The Communist Party committee in the region said 96.2 per cent of the gangs were discovered while they were planning attacks, the state-run news agency Xinhua said.

Some 112 suspects had turned themselves in to the police, according to the report.

The security crackdown was launched after 39 people were killed in May last year when attackers drove two four-wheel drive vehicles into a market in Urumqi and hurled explosives at passers-by. Four of the attackers were also killed.

In the summer of 2013, a 50-year-old chemistry professor in the Chinese province of Xi'an apparently decided to emulate "Breaking Bad."  Teaming up with a Mr. Chen, Professor Lu (full names haven't been released) straddled between his classroom duties and a growing methamphetamine business -- at least until last week, when law enforcement swept down on the pair and their employees, seizing 128 kilograms of finished product, more than 2,000 liters of semi-finished product, and 5 million yuan in cash (approximately $806,000). As of a week ago, their sales network, which stretched across China, is no longer in operation.

EUROPEAN BRANCH OF THE ISLAMIC STATE THREATENS BELGIAN MAYOR OF THE CITY OF ANTWERP WITH CONVERSION OR DEATH:

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Islamic extremists in Belgium have publicly threatened to kill the mayor of the Belgian city of Antwerp, Bart De Wever, if he does not convert to Islam, local media reported Monday.

“I always warned that we will not get rid of the threat from Islamic extremists in the near future. This was ignored for years. This wound became apparent now with [the current developments in] Syria and will fester for a long time before we will get rid of it,” de Wever said.

RUSSIAN DEMONSTRATION OF COLLECTIVE MILITARY FORCE:

MOSCOW (AP) -- The Russian military has launched a massive exercise involving 250 aircraft and other weapons.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement Monday the drills will involve air force and air defense units of the Central, Western and Southern Military Districts totaling 12,000 servicemen. Combat aircraft will deploy to temporary bases and air defense systems will be sent to the Ashuluk and Kapustin Yar shooting ranges in southern Russia for training with live ammunition.

It also said long-range Russian bombers will launch cruise missiles at practice targets at a Siberian firing range.

The exercise is part of a series of Russian military maneuvers taking place amid tensions with the West over Russian actions in Ukraine. The current drills are preparation for even more massive Center-2015 maneuvers set for later this year.

NATO SCURRIES:

Finland, Norway and Sweden are readying for one of Europe’s largest fighter jet drills this year – the Arctic Challenge Exercise 2015, kicking off on Monday. Nine northern countries are taking part, with up to 90 aircraft expected in the sky at once.

Eurofighter Typhoons, Tornado GR4 fighters, as well as Lockheed Martin F-16s are just some of the aircraft that will take part in what Norway’s chief Brigadier General Jan Ove Rygg calls “orchestration and conduct of complex air operations, in close relation to NATO partners,” as cited by the Norwegian Armed Forces press release.

The jets will be joined in the air by various other multirole aircraft, among them NATO’s early warning and control jets, known as AWACS, and the DA-20 Falcon Jets, specializing in electronic warfare.

Among the participants are the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

The games, to last for 12 days, will include close to 4,000 personnel, together with European and American planes adding to the list of equipment put forth by the three organizers.
