I know I’m probably burning bridges here. I hope that is not the case, but I am going to say this anyway. (Please keep in mind, I’m not calling any one person out). If you want to call me a bitch or tear me a new hole, that’s absolutely okay, but I hope you read this all the way through.

So I’m seeing a lot of posts circulating about the Cybird contest.

I understand how some artists feel about the situation but I feel like the majority of people who are angry about this situation are completely forgetting that this is a concept contest (they will give your idea to their artists for their interpretation/drawing of it - they wont just print and sell the file you send) and more importantly - these characters are their property - not yours!

There is major hypocrisy here: 

In almost every otome game’s fair use/user agreement they state that you are absolutely not allowed to profit off of their story or characters and I see many people ignore this by selling commissions and hand made/drawn merchandise. Now keep in mind, I am speaking as someone who has purchased fan made merch and commissioned people (AND WILL AGAIN!). I TOTALLY understand the want to have merch and art in your favourite artist’s style (especially being in a country where that shit isn’t available at all!) but I’m so baffled how people are coming so hard for Cybird over this when they have no problem completely violating user and fair use agreements and profiting off of other people’s hard work and property - which is exactly what you are doing when you sell your merch and commissions (if we lay it all out and stop sugar coating everything that’s what it is. Think of how you would feel if you came up with characters and someone else used them to make a profit you won’t see a dime of). I also see people constantly posting CGs and multiple screenshot sequences in a row which also violates most otome games’ fair use/user agreements but no one gives each other crap about that???

Back to the contest - did they even announce the prizes for this contest? They mentioned that there would be 3 winners chosen but they didn’t say exactly what they would or would not win so the speculation as to the prizing is bizarre to me. 

I’m writing this because I don’t like seeing a company I love that is trying to do something fun and interactive with their fans get crapped on because guess what? They won’t do it again and that makes me sad because I recently entered a contest where the prize was $5 worth of in-game currency and my scenario in a game I love - essentially just exposure - which is the only reason I personally entered in the first place. I wanted to be chosen and see my version of their characters be accepted. That was more than enough for me and will always be one of the best moments of my life. I want others to experience this and truthfully, I myself would like to experience it again. I’m scared that this vicious and frankly unwarranted backlash will scare Cybird and other companies from hosting contests like this again.  

Spec work is shitty for sure and no artist should be forced or expected to work for free, but this is a contest that you can choose to enter or not. I truly don’t believe Cybird’s intention was malicious at all and I feel like they are being wrongly attacked. If you don’t like the rules, don’t enter. 

 I can’t understand how vicious some of you are being to a company that has provided you countless hours of free entertainment while looking the other way as you profit off of them and violate their user agreements/fair use agreements. 

TL:DR:  Don’t make this something it’s not and Don’t accuse Cybird of being shady when you are more than fine with being shady toward them.

That being said, Cybird, if you are reading this - please give your players more free castle and closet storage more often.

About Utano☆Princesama Shining Live

Utano☆Princesama Shining Live is a rhythm game for Android™ and iOS mobile devices based on BROCCOLI’s Utano☆Princesama series. With over 2 million downloads* in the domestic market, the Japanese version of the game has found success with fans across the country since launching on August 28, 2017.

Utano☆Princesama Shining Live features 11 idols from the groups ST☆RISH and QUARTET NIGHT. Players can set their favorite idol to appear on their home screen and tap him to see his various reactions and watch his affection go up, as well as form personalized teams to play songs in a rhythm game. The rhythm game component allows players to train their own original unit of idols as they play a suite of songs from the Utano☆Princesama series at multiple difficulty levels. Players can also unlock stories starring the characters. The game transcends the boundaries of traditional gaming with a special Camera Mode that takes advantage of AR technology, giving players the chance to take photos with their favorite pop stars whenever, wherever.

Opening Act Social Media Campaign

A series of special events leading up to the launch of the game were unveiled along with the announcement. Players are encouraged to follow either the official Twitter or Facebook account (or both!) to participate in these events, as well as receive the latest updates on the upcoming title. The Opening Act Social Media Campaign is now being held worldwide, except in Japan where the game is already available and in Mainland China, where a separate series of events will be held. All players will receive increasingly extravagant gifts when the game is released based on the number of people who follow the game’s official accounts.

ILLUSTRATOR COMMENT He was previously a side character, but somehow, when he was upgraded to a main character, I just swapped the parting of his fringe to the opposite side, and voila! Perfection lol. I’m careful to always give him a diligent expression on his face, so that his personality shines through.
