How to Train Your Dragon: "Coming Back Around" - Trumpet Cover
This is my performance of "Coming Back Around," the inspiring score composed by John Powell for the final scene of "How to Train Your Dragon." I transcribed the trumpet music myself from the original soundtrack.
The music from the animated film is incredible, and I must say I just saw the new live-action remake last weekend, and it might be even better. Both are just completely amazing movies.

Iconic Trumpet Solo from Independence Day
One of my favorite trumpet solos of all time is the theme from "Independence Day" (1996), a classic film scored by David Arnold. The original solo, played by Malcolm McNab, sets the mood for the movie right from the start. Iconic movie, and an even more iconic trumpet solo!

CHVRCHES - Afterglow (Trumpet Cover)
I love this song by CHVRCHES so much; it's incredibly beautiful, and it translates wonderfully to the trumpet as well. Who knows, in my wildest dreams, CHVRCHES might see this video and invite me to play this song with them on tour!

I Wrote a Trumpet Exercise to Improve my High Range
Here is a little range exercise I wrote for myself to improve high range on the trumpet. I can't really say enough about how powerful it has been for my playing to practice control on the upper register. And by control, I mean playing it softly and as relaxed as I can. In fact, it is one of the important parts of playing an exercise like this to be able to sit there on the high note, while holding it, and paying attention to where and how you can relax even more. A certain type of meditative approach has yielded immense benefits to my range personally as of recently.

The Beautiful Snow | Part 4
Note to self - work on making triple-tongued triplets more consistent. This is the other reason I record myself playing these exercises. Not just to post them, but to listen back myself. Amazing what things we can miss when we are only playing but not listening back to ourselves! In this case, I noticed shortly after recording a few takes of this almost immediately that I am not getting fully consistent triplets here, and this becomes more pronounced the further I get into the variation.
If you would like to take a stab at this one yourselves, you can download the sheet music here: https://mathewharwich.com/resources/the-beautiful-snow-2025-02-21

I Wrote a Short Piece for Trumpet and Drone
I present to you all something quite new but it has been simmering in the back of my mind for a while now. I've enjoyed very much the use of drones in my practice routine. A great way to have a reference of pitch, and indeed having that sustaining note underneath can help bring a more powerful sense of music performance whilst practicing. The way I have done this for every occasion besides this latest one, is to simply improvise over the drone. But then I got thinking, "why not write a piece! and make it fun to play! Make it musical even. Make it worthy to be called played as a piece (albeit a short one at that). So this is the result of that effort, and I think there will be many to come in the coming future. As always, I have provided the sheet music in the link below. AND you also have access to listen to and download the drone music track, the very same one I made for this video. Would love to hear your thoughts on this piece, better yet, play and record it and tag me! That would be amazing, and if you were to do this, you would be the first to do this (that I am aware of) on my channel!

I Wrote a Trumpet Etude (It's Hard…)
Since I have been getting more comfortable with Dorico and writing my own material, I thought something I should aim to do is write some longer pieces. I put my free-thinking artist cap on for a good few minutes and out popped this etude. It may start out easy but it starts getting much harder pretty early on. I think the biggest challenges of this one is keeping full control over how I want it to shape and sound. Especially near the end, that's where things can start to get squirrely. The trick for me at least, (not that it worked perfectly yet) was to try and keep myself centered for its entirety and not get over-stressed about the whole thing. Let it relax, and let it breathe. This is an etude that does not need to be played with a metronome (and I can say this as the composer).
BTW if you're looking for the sheet music from this video, you can download or view it from my website here: https://mathewharwich.com/resources/etude-2025-03-23

New Original Etude for Trumpet! Fresh!
Well, I wrote another little tiny piece for trumpet tonight. An Etude you could call it. I was feeling a little bit silly with this this one and just let my fingers go where they wanted to go when writing with the keyboard in Dorico. But I did discover something; there are indeed some ultra-challenging parts of this little etude. Quite technical tricky things, you might even catch it in the video where I myself had some trouble playing it! I love these kinds of challenges and I welcome it, and I know that with some dedicated practice things that were tricky can sometimes because as smooth as butter. Eventually that is…
Brass players, come on and try this one, I would love to hear how you do. Of course, you might want to start a little bit slower, or maybe faster. Do your thing!

One of My Favorite Classic Arban Songs
I've been so busy lately with some very exciting things. Unfortunately though I have not had the time to upload regularly to this channel. But we're gonna try again. I thought to get things really going again I would share this favorite Arban song of mine, 'My Pretty Jane'. The movement in this piece and lyrical demands make it a little more challenging to play than one would think. I find this to be a great piece to play at any time of the day. Warm-ups, warm-downs, or right in the middle of all the chaos. This piece brings me back to center, on what really matters in music the most. What is that you ask? I dare not answer that question fully, for you will get as many answers as there are questions. But personally, it seems to me that expression and emotion are core elements of what is inside of 'music', if not fully defined by it.
Added a link to the music if you would like to try this one: https://mathewharwich.com/wp/resources/my-pretty-jane-2025-03-14/
