“CSRGOVE as a Whole”(week 12) Blog entry 12
See - Experience
Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR is a model that helps corporations regulate themselves in order for them to be socially responsible to their stakeholders and the public (Chen, 2020). The subject Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance or CSRGOVE is a subject that teaches social responsibility, sustainable development, and corporate governance.
Analyze - Reflection
The subject CSRGOVE has opened my mind to the ethics necessary in the world of business. Running a business cannot just be about profits it must also include growth, responses to environmental changes, and societal responsibilities (Davoren, 2016). The benefits of capitalism should be more than just profits. During the twelve weeks of classes we were taught to find the causes of ethical and unethical behaviors of companies.
We must be more aware on our decisions especially when it involves stakeholders and the public, for the role of a responsible and ethical business person is to make a good work environment for his employees, build long lasting relationships with communities in order, and be socially responsible (Newlands, 2017). We must also be more aware of our environment, for there is a constant give and take relationship between business and the environment (Tanuja, 2016).
The subject taught us how to share our values and ethics through our service-learning requirements. Doing these requirements opened my eyes on how I can help the people around me and the community. It gave me a chance to give purpose of the things I learned.
Commitment - Action
We must think on how we can improve the world around us by doing business. We should think of ways that will benefit not just us but also other people and the community. I plan that when I too have a business of my own it will benefit the people and the communities that are stakeholders to it. The same for my classmates who have learned the same things I learned during the twelve weeks of CSRGOVE.

“My Service Learning Reflection” (week 11) Blog entry 11
See - Experience
The topic assigned to us is about drug addiction awareness and this topic is very important especially right now, where one of the biggest problems this country has is a drug problem (Simbulan, Estacio, 2020). I found out how dangerous it is to use or even just get involved with drugs. I wanted to make sure that my contribution in the presentation for our service learning project will inform the people especially the youth about the dangers of drugs and the other dangers related to it.
Analyze - Reflection
The Service-Learning Project made me and my group work together as one. We knew that the requirement demands a lot from us, so we had to work well as a group in order to accomplish the task at hand. Maria Refuerzo was a great group leader. She directed our approach on the project and on how we accomplished it at the given time with our different schedules. Finishing on time was not the only challenge, we also had to make sure that our service to the public will be useful, since that is the point of the service learning project because it will be shared with the public. We found out the effects of drugs to people and why do people result to drugs. Our project’s purpose is to inform the people why and how to avoid drugs, for it has dangerous effects both physically and mentally.
Commitment - Action
The things that came into my mind on the possible ways we can steer the people especially the youth away from drugs is not just to inform them about the dangers of drugs, but also at the same time to not give them reasons to result to drugs. If we give them a chance to improve their quality life, the less likely they will result to drugs (Assari, Jafari, 2010).

“CSR and the Environment” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 10 (week 10)
See - Experience
The Nestle company has started this campaign for their CSR which recycles plastic to usable materials and this campaign plans to also lessen the use of plastic on Nestle’s products. Nestle has claimed that it has reached plastic neutrality on their production of their products (Nestle PH, 2020). Greenpeace on the other hand claims that what is Nestle is doing is a whole another different harm to the environment by producing materials from waste plastic which uses cement kilns to incinerate the waste plastic and mold them to different forms. This process produces dangerous gasses which are harmful to the environment and the health of the people. What Greenpeace has also claimed is that Nestle never lessened their use of plastics on their products (Greenpeace PH 2020).
Analyze - Reflection
I think what Nestle’s true initiative is to just save face, for they have been ranked as one of the most polluting brand in the Philippines according to Rivas R. (2020). The Philippines is said to have a sachet economy (Philippine Marine Debris 2020). What Nestle has done for decades is to take advantage of the country’s sachet economy based on their production of plastic. They have produced so many of their products in sachets so that it will be the go-to purchase of the people. The use of sachets demands for more non-biodegradable plastics. These non-biodegradable plastics ends up on land fills and on our oceans.
What Nestle really should be doing if they really want to save the environment is to stop taking advantage of the sachet economy and to really and honestly lessen their use of plastics, and look for alternative biodegradable composites to pack their products. Recycling is good if done properly, but they cannot rely only on recycling for true plastic neutrality. Being environmentally friendly and using biodegradable materials for packaging does add manufacturing cost (Ladapo, 2017). There is no going around the fact that in order for them to reach plastic neutrality, they will have to do things that will affect their profits, and this is what CSR is all about is to make sure that it will not all just be about profits.
Commitment - Action
Our daily actions affect our environment such as; from filling our car up with gas to buying your essential needs in the grocery. We must always be aware on our consumption, for it affects our environment. If we can reduce our use of plastic then we must do so by all means, for it will reduce the non-biodegradable waste that contaminates our soil, air, and oceans. If we can reuse the plastic as much as we can, then we must do so, for it will help lessen the amount of waste we produce at a time. Then if we can recycle plastic, we must do so as much as we can, for it will reduce our waste and improve our production. It is our responsibility to take care of our earth, for we are the only specie capable of doing so.

“Corruption” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 9 (week 9)
See - Experience
Corruption has a lot of forms and all are prejudicial to the people or system being corrupted. One form of corruption is malversation. It is manipulating people by misusing their trust and doing things that are different from what was promised. This form of corruption comes from people’s greed. They are willing to deceive others for their own personal gain. Then the other form of corruption is also closely related to the first one which is also a form of deception. This is altering other people’s thoughts or way of thinking by using scandalizing them or convincing them to think and act in a way towards your advantage. According to a quote from Malindog-Uy’s (2020) article about the corruption amid the pandemic, “corruption is a form of dishonesty or criminal offense undertaken by a person or organization entrusted with a position of authority, to acquire illicit benefit or abuse of power for one’s private interests and gains.”
Corruption may be done by all sorts of people, and its gravity ranges from the level of prejudicial cause and deceitfulness towards others. Recently there have been perceived corrupt activities that happened in the Philippine Government. Two of the most recent speculated corruptions in the Philippines are the corruption in Philhealth (Malindog-Uy, A., & Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, 2020) and the corruption in the white sand Manila Bay project (Kravchuk, 2020).
Analyze - Reflection
Corruption should not be practiced by anyone by any means or gravity. People cannot justify wrong actions by the gravity of it, therefore we must all stay away from it and do what is right even though it may be harder for us, for it does not require us taking advantage of others, misusing their trust or destroying something for our own benefit.
What happened in Philhealth was, people inside the Philhealth, employees and syndicates have been making fraudulent scheme of padded medical claims and treatments for ghost patients. (Malindog-Uy, A., & Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, 2020) This is a very grievous kind of corruption as funds for the true Philhealth holders are being deducted for the own pockets of these fraudulent syndicates and employees. The money that could have been spent on other people’s health was instead used for the personal benefits of the fraudulent people.
The Manila Bay project which costed P389-M to clean and put white sand on (Perez-Rubio, 2020) is also a form of corruption. It is corruption since it has destroyed the marine ecosystem in the area in Cebu where the dolomite was extracted (Mayol, 2020). This is corrupting the environment for the artificial and unnecessary improvement in the Manila Bay area. The white sand part of the project did not have to be done. The project should have just stayed with the course of cleaning and rehabilitating the bay instead of adding the unnecessary beautification using dolomite which caused the destruction of other environments.
Commitment - Action
We can see the unjustly things that are happening within our community, and we often feel like there is nothing we can do to stop it. Corruption has been plaguing our country for generations. What we can do as students and youths of our community is, to make sure that there will be an improvement in the future, for we are the future. We must do everything that we can in order to stop corruption. We must raise awareness about corruption, to make sure that people know about the types of corruption, so that they will have every knowledge what is right and what is wrong. We must inform our fellow youth, so that they too will not be corrupt to others and the environment in the future.

“Business and Politics” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 8 (week 8)
See - Experience
Business and politics are inseparable yet people always do tend to want to separate them. It has always been frowned upon to when a person or entity uses politics to the advantage of his business or when a politician uses businesses to put him up in the ranks of politics. This is often a case, but no matter what business and politics will always be and should always be related to each other. One is needed to sustain the other and both are stakeholders to one another (Bloomberg.com. Bloomberg, 2018).
Analyze - Refelection
It is the job of politicians to spread the benefits of capitalism and it is the job of businesses to fuel capitalism (Bloomberg.com. Bloomberg, 2018). Politics regulate businesses in order to ensure that it contributes to the common good, because macroeconomic forces in a business needs government intervention to smooth it out (Ross S. 2020). Businesses are not just sources of income to the owners, but are also sources of livelihood to the employees and sources of tax income for the government. Businesses exists for the common good of everyone (O'Brien, T. 2009), and same as for politics. It is the politicians obligation to serve the community with the resources available ( Vyain, S., Scaramuzzo, G. 2014), and the resources that are being made available by the people for the common good (e.g. tax collected to make highways, roads, and bridges).
The access and spread of the goods and the opportunities may not always be equal to everyone. For example, a business owner may own significantly more compared to his employees, therefore inequalities in the distribution of goods exist and social classes grow further away form each other. It is also in the role of politicians to at least level the playing field for everyone, so that everyone will have at least equal opportunities.
Commitment - Action
Businesses should have a stand on political issues for they are also stakeholders of the regulations and other interventions made by the government towards them, and that many other people also rely on them which are also stakeholders of the same government (Council, F. 2019).
Whether a businessman, employee, or politician, it is our job to make sure that the opportunities for everyone is equal. We should make sure that in everything that we do no one will be stepped on or put down. We should make sure that the benefits of capitalism are spread well to everyone.

“Ethical Advertising” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 7 (week 7)
See - Experience
This week we just had a lecture in ethical advertising. We were shown specific ads by companies and asked to give our comments about it. One of the ads that we had a discussion about that got caught up in my mind was one of the advertisement of Mazda where there is this naked woman where her private body parts were only being covered by the promo banners (Pin on F-Word. (n.d.), 2020). Looking at the ad may not have encouraged or discouraged me to buy the product, but it may have to some. It may have encouraged others to buy the product because they might have perceived the ad’s message as “the car, women will go naked for” and others might have been discouraged to buy the product because to them the ad means to objectify women.
Analyze - Reflection
Now I want to analyze what this advertisement of Mazda really means. Yes, having a car nowadays can make you more attractive since your car of choice can also be your own style, and there is nothing wrong with this. What Mazda may have done wrong is that they have undressed the woman in the advertisement making it look like, women would find you more attractive because of the style of the car that they would be willing to undress for you. This is not true because no woman in their right mind would undress for someone for what car they drive. Advertising companies have been objectifying women long before and up to now (Paul S. 2020). This advertisement did also objectified women for it used a naked woman for her body in the ad just to attract men in buying.
Commitment - Action
I learned from this lecture the impacts advertisements can bring onto people. Advertising as a form of marketing can bring profits in devious and transient ways (Hartman, L., DesJardins, J., Macdonald, C.). Being a business-major I may encounter to be in a situation where I have to advertise my product and therefore I should be more sensitive and be more responsible on what message I will be trying to convey through my advertisements about my product.

“Service Learning (while doing)” CSRGOVE Blog entry 6 (week 6)
Service Learning blog gives us the opportunity to reflect on the lesson we cover every week. It did put in heavy additional load in on what the subject CSRGOVE requires and on top of that the other lesson form my other subjects. I did learn a few additional things on business ethics even though I am cramming doing my blog entries. I was also able to refresh myself on the corporation and get updated on the revisions.
Writing the blogs I tried as much as possible with the limited time I have to apply the Lasallian Framework. The first step of the framework is to experience which masid-danas. When I learn a lesson I try to put myself in a situation where I have to apply it. Then I do the next step after that which is, to make an analysis on it or a suri-nilay. By doing this I get to reflect and analyze on what i have learned on my lesson and find out a way on how to apply them and study the outcomes. Then finally I do the last step which is to commit or taya-kilos on it so that I may use what I have learned and put them into action.
The Lasallian Framework is not only effective for my CSRGOVE subject it is also helpful for me in solving everyday problems and situations. This is a very systematic approach on problem solving which is very effective since it is very simple yet very detailed framework. This helps me to be a more systematic person and a broad thinker. I hope that I may not only help myself with this but also help others by solving their problem and by teaching them this framework so that they to may apply it for themselves and for other people too.

“Iphone Slave Trade” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 5 (week 5)
Apple has outsourced cheap labor in China to manufacture their Iphone 6. They also sourced the materials in there. By doing this they have cut cost in the production of the Iphone. They have taken advantage of the people in poverty that are willing to work in low salaries and in inhumane conditions.
We should take think first before we purchase any Apple products. We should think if do we really want to support this kind of unethical business way of operation. This not goes not only for Apple product but also for other products that uses people as slaves in manufacturing.
We should be mindful of the products we purchase on how its made. We should think about the people that make them and the companies that are profiting form them if they are doing what is right. By doing this we give a positive impact on society and also on the environment.

“Corporation Code” CSRGOVE Blog entry 4 (week 4)
This week we did a quick brief through on the Corporation Code of the Philippines. I was able to remember a few thing form my BUSLAW2 subject I took a few terms ago. We are informed about the new rules or laws in starting up a corporation and a few refreshers on corporate social responsibilities. There are new revisions and additions in the corporation code of the Philippines.
The significant changes that we discussed and are understandable for us non-law practitioners are the following. There can now be a one person corporation.(Sec 10) Before there must be at least five people in a corporation. Corporations imbued with public interest are now required to elect a compliance officer (Sec 24) and are required to submit additional annual reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission.(Sec 177) Corporations now have a perpetual existence, meaning they no longer have to amend their articles of incorporation to extend the corporate life for another fifty years.(RA 11232) The minimum stock requirement rule has been null in order to benefit small to medium scale incorporators.(Sec 12) Corporation can now apply for a revival with the SEC if their terms have expired prior to due renewal. Once the the request to the SEC has been approved the corporation is then deemed revived and is given a perpetual life under article 11232.(Sec 11)
After being reviewed and updated on the corporation code of the Philippines. I am now more confident in starting or being part of a corporation. The revisions on the code are encouraging small to medium scale incorporators to enter into business and the provisions are more considerate for them since the most difficult years of a business are at the early years. The revised code also made it easier for struggling yet old corporations to survive. I will try to retain this knowledge about the code and be updated about it for years to come since it will be useful in the future for business.

“Ethical Framework” CSRGOVE Blog entry 3 (week 3)
The Ethical Framework is an attempt to give a systematic answer to the fundamental question of ethics. How must we live our lives? This question is important for it will answer how we must live our lives not only for our benefit but also for the others. The ethical framework attempts to answer this by describing how utilitarian thinking underlies economic and business decision making and explaining how the free market is thought to serve the utilitarian goal of maximizing the overall good.
Utilitarianism is a decision-making process that based on the outcome. It is a very pragmatic and consequentialist approach on decision making. It focuses on the highest benefit return, as long as there is no foreseeable consequence in the future. This may be a very practical approach in deciding what to do especially when it comes to business decisions that will yield bigger profits. Utilitarianism maybe practical, but it since it avoids the consequences it can also be less helpful for others. For example, if a company decides not to donate to charity because the consequence would be that it will yield a high expense for the company. This is one of the examples where utilitarianism may not be good for everyone even though it is very pragmatic.
The free market is thought to serve the utilitarian goal of maximizing the overall good, but it can this may not always be commensalism for it may bay just focused on profit for there can always be profit even though there are no consequences in yielding it. What may cause more good for a business without consequences may not always be good for others because utilitarianism does in the free market does not account for external consequences.
We must be aware of this when using the utilitarian approach, so that it may be useful not only for the stakeholders.

Service Learning CSRGOVE Blog Entry 2 (week 2)
The Service Learning for CSRGOVE requires students to reflect on their weekly lessons and to document and write about them in a blog in order, for other people to be able to access. Allowing other people access the blogs allows them to also benefit from the lessons that the students are learning and in return the student are able to review and apply the Lasallian framework from what they learned.
I plan to write my next blogs by using the Lasallian framework in order to apply a systematic approach to the lessons i will be learning. The three steps of the Lasallian framework which are: to see-experience, to analyze-reflect, and to commit-act. I plan to observe things first and take some time to absorb it and learn it. By doing this I will be able to see or experience it first before making statements and generalizations about the thing I will be trying to analyze.
After seeing and experiencing the lessons I want to learn, I will then analyze and reflect on them. Analyzing what I have observed will allow me to do a critical thinking on the topic and differentiate the significant details form the less significant ones and arrange them in order.
Lastly, I will put what I have learned through observation and reflection to practice by putting them into action which is commit-act the last step in the framework. This will be the most important step for this will be the determinant if what i have learned will be useful or not, since it cannot be determined as useful if I cannot put them into action for the benefit of myself and others. The effectiveness of the system of the framework is determined by its usefulness.

“What are my Values” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 1(week 1)
What makes a Lasallian Alumnus businessman different form other businessmen? That question is often asked and is answered in many different ways in many different business subjects in De la Salle University. One of the answers that often I have heard is that La Sallian business people do business for people, planet, and profit. These three P’s are commonly taught in business subjects, from marketing to accounting. From my observation is that business courses are often looked down upon by people especially by boomers who only believe that there are only two honorable occupations which is either being a doctor or an engineer. They believe that these occupations are the only true contributors to society.
What they do not know is that businessmen are the ones providing sustainable jobs to people so that they can live a comfortable lifestyle and send their kids to school. By doing this the first P of the three P’s is being done. Businesses are being operated not only for the owner’s benefit but also other people. Who are these other people? These are the consumers and employees. By doing business jobs, goods and services are made available to people.
Business can also be good for the planet if done ethically. If good business ethics are being practiced it can be the perfect tool in harvesting the earth’s natural resources for the people. It can be the tool to make the lives of the people and the earth coexist and be sustainable for generations to come, because if we just let anyone harvest the earth’s resources without proper practice of conservation and preservation then human life on earth cannot be sustainable.
Then finally for the third P which is profit. The word profit is also sometimes looked down upon as it can be perceived to be a source of income for a laborless work. This is not true because for a good business to be profitable it has required a lot of work and risk from the businessman operating it. Profit is great because it makes the business sustainable in order for it to continue its operation for many more years and provide jobs, goods, and services for the people.
What makes a Lasallian a good businessman is that these practices are engraved in him the day he entered the university, therefore he must put this into his practice in managing, operating, or being just part of a business. He must never let any temptations, shortcuts, and other alternatives get in the way of him instilling these practices on his daily work as a businessman.
