Connect the Type Cover Keyboard back to your Surface ensuring proper and firm magnetic contact between the two is established.

Do you have a protective shield cover for your Surface? If yes, make sure this is not causing hindrance and the improper /loose connection between your Keyboard and the Surface. You need to make sure that the mating parts of connection between the two are firmly in contact with each other. Loose connections might result in problems.

Reinstall the Surface Cover Drivers

After all these previous attempts, if things are still not working fine, we request that you re-install the Surface Cover Drivers and check again.

To set this as your homepage, go to Settings > Reading in the dashboard. In the “Front page displays” section, select the “static page” option and select the page you just created from the dropdown. Save the settings.

Remember, if you want to have a page to display your blog posts too, you need to create another page (leave the content blank) and set that as the Posts Page in the same settings section as above where we created a blank page titled Blog on our site and set that as the Posts Page.

The Homepage template is the old way of creating a custom Homepage. It is not very versatile and cannot be customized without plugins or custom code.

To manually set this up on an existing store, create a new page and add any Welcome content you wish, which is displayed above products. Then in the Page Attributes meta box, select Homepage from the Template dropdown. Publish or Update the page.

Assuming you added some products to your store, you should see links to them and links to the top level product categories when visiting the page. Rearrange or hide sections using the Storefront Homepage Control plugin.

That page you created and added the homepage page template is now loaded when anyone visits your website homepage.

Free Woocommerce Shop Page Templates

The product categories are displayed in accordance to the order they appear in the dashboard. Change the order at Products > Categories, then drag and drop the categories to suit your preference. If you’re comfortable with code, there are hooks and filters to further customize these homepage components.

If you’d like to reorder the components on the homepage, use our free Homepage Control plugin. You can further customize the homepage template (product columns, titles, toggle components etc), and much more with the Storefront WooCommerce Powerpack.

The full width template is a standard page template without a sidebar, allowing content to span the full width of your site.

Storefront has three menu locations, “Primary” and “Secondary”, and “Handheld”. The primary navigation appears beneath the site logo just before the content. The secondary navigation appears to the right of the site logo adjacent to the search box (assuming WooCommerce is active).

The handheld menu appears on mobile devices as a “hamburger menu” in place of the primary and secondary navigation.

You must assign a Menu you created in WordPress to the primary and handheld navigation, or they display each of your pages. The secondary navigation, however, displays nothing if you do not assign a menu. Therefore after activating Storefront for the first time, nothing is shown in the secondary navigation when viewing the front end of your website.

On May 7 2020, the Citizen Lab published a report that documents how WeChat (the most popular social app in China) conducts surveillance of images and files shared on the platform and uses the monitored content to train censorship algorithms. This document provides a summary of the research findings and questions and answers from the research team.

Chinese cyberspace is one of the most surveilled and censored in the world. That includes WeChat. Owned by Tencent, one of China's biggest companies, the chat-meets-payment app has more than 1.

WeChat surveils non-China-registered accounts and uses messages from those accounts to train censorship algorithms to be used against China-registered accounts.

In previous research, we found that censorship on WeChat is only enabled for users with accounts registered to mainland China phone numbers. WeChat users outside of China may think that WeChat’s political censorship and surveillance system does not affect them. However, in new research we show that files and images shared by WeChat users with accounts outside of China are subject to political surveillance, and this content is used to train and build up the censorship system that WeChat uses to censor China-registered users. Our technical methods can only tell us if files and images shared on WeChat are under surveillance. We don’t know yet if chat message text is under similar surveillance. In the meantime, users should be aware that this is a possibility.

Both the monitoring and censorship happen in secret, without transparency to users.

None of WeChat’s public-facing policy documents, personal data access requests processes, or privacy officers communicated that the company is conducting this surveillance.

We analyzed WeChat’s public-facing policy documents, made personal data access requests, and sent detailed questions to Tencent data protection representatives. We used these methods to assess if they could reveal or explain the surveillance practices we detected, and whether WeChat representatives would explain the company’s practices when directly asked about them. None of these methods provided a clear rationale or description of the surveillance that we detected in the course of our experiments.

How does censorship work on WeChat?

In previous work, we found that WeChat enables keyword and image censorship for users with accounts registered to mainland China phone numbers.

WeChat censors content server-side, meaning that all the rules to perform censorship are on a remote server. When a message is sent from one WeChat user to another, it passes through a server managed by Tencent (WeChat’s parent company) that detects if the message includes blacklisted keywords before a message is sent to the recipient.

If a message is censored there is no notification given to the user sending or receiving the message. The screenshot below shows a conversation between two China-registered accounts. One user tries to send the keyword “法轮功” (falun gong) and is censored. No notification is given to either user that the message was blocked.

What is the difference between China- and non-China-registered accounts?

A China-registered account is a WeChat account that was originally registered to a mainland Chinese phone number. A non-China-registered account is any WeChat account that was not originally registered to a mainland Chinese phone number (for example an account registered to a Canadian or United States phone number). China-registered accounts are under terms of service in the jurisdiction of China (specifically Shenzhen) and are subject to censorship. Censorship persists for China-registered accounts even if the account is later associated with a phone number outside of China. Non-China-registered accounts are under terms of service outside the jurisdiction of China (specifically Singapore). While in previous research non-China-registered accounts had not been found to be under political censorship, our latest study reveals that documents and images sent from these accounts are nevertheless under political surveillance and that this content is used to invisibly build up WeChat’s censorship system for China-registered accounts.

How did you discover that non-China-registered accounts were being monitored?

Someone asked us if non-China-registered users were safe from political surveillance using WeChat as long as they weren’t talking to China-registered users. Since we knew that messages between such users were free from political censorship, we responded that “we think they are free from surveillance too.” But then we got to thinking: how can we actually measure this? Surveillance rarely occurs in a vacuum, and can be used to enable future censorship. We knew from previous work how the surveillance of images and documents is used to employ censorship in an automated fashion on WeChat. The tricky part was that non-China-registered users were not under censorship, and so to test for whether they were under surveillance we had to use two different chat conversations: a first conversation between only non-China-registered accounts for triggering surveillance and a second conversation containing a China-registered account to measure changes in censorship. When we sent politically sensitive content in the first conversation, we observed an increase in censorship in the second, revealing that the first conversation was under surveillance despite being among only non-China-registered accounts.

How are sensitive files analyzed, flagged, and stored by WeChat?

Documents are scanned for sensitive text. Images are also scanned for sensitive text, and the overall image is visually compared to a blacklist of known sensitive images. If these files are determined to be politically sensitive, then the MD5 hash (a kind of digital fingerprint) of that file is flagged, meaning that the hash is retained by WeChat and used to more efficiently censor these files in the future.

MD5 hashes are used by WeChat to quickly identify content once it has been flagged as sensitive by WeChat. What is an MD5 hash?

Think of it as a digital fingerprint. When files are run through the MD5 algorithm, the algorithm will generate a fingerprint, or “hash.” The hash is a short, fixed-size string of bits. In theory, it should be difficult to find or create files that will produce the same hash. However, there are vulnerabilities in the MD5 algorithm that make this reproduction easy, and we can exploit these vulnerabilities in our research. By creating two different images with the same hash — one politically sensitive and one benign — we can study how WeChat’s surveillance system works. When we send politically sensitive images between accounts registered outside China, politically benign images with the same hash are censored when sent between Chinese accounts. These benign images would not have usually been flagged as sensitive, proving that surveillance is happening in conversations between accounts registered outside China.

The diagram below shows the process of mapping a file (e.g., a document or an image) to an MD5 hash. In this example, two different images are inputted to a cryptographic hash function resulting in two unique MD5 hashes.

What are the limitations of this research?

One limitation is that our technical methods can only tell us if images and documents are under surveillance. We don’t know yet if chat message text is under similar surveillance. In the meantime users should assume that this is a possibility. Another limitation is that our research was conducted over the span of multiple months. Although we consistently observed political surveillance between non-China-registered users in our measurements during that time, we don’t know if this surveillance is something that only happened to be enabled during the time of our experiments. It’s possible that this behavior goes back years, and it may have always been present on WeChat.

What do these findings mean for non-China-registered users?

WeChat users outside of China may think that WeChat’s political censorship and surveillance systems don’t affect them. However, our research shows that by using WeChat, not only are the files and images they share under political surveillance, but their content is being used to train and build up the censorship system that WeChat uses to censor China-registered users.

Do these findings mean that the Chinese government is surveilling WeChat’s international users?

Information that is received or retained by companies based in China is subject to disclosure to the Chinese government for national security and criminal investigation purposes under China’s Cybersecurity Law. In the case of WeChat, its users in China are subject to China-based terms of service and privacy policies whereas international users are subject to terms of service and privacy policies of Singapore. Our research was motivated by a desire to understand how communications among WeChat’s international users–who are covered under by the terms of service and privacy policies published in Singapore–might be shared with WeChat offices in China or other China-based entities. In effect, we wanted to understand whether international users’ communications were protected from surveillance we have previously observed that China-based users are routinely subject to.

Our experiments reveal that communication between WeChat’s international users contribute to a censorship system that is used to censor China-registered users. Our research does not, however, reveal whether Tencent is sharing international WeChat users’ communications with the Chinese government. While our research reveals that international WeChat users are subject to content surveillance, we do not definitively know what is being surveilled, the full basis of such surveillance, or with whom surveilled data is shared.

Don’t all social media companies perform some type of content monitoring? How is what WeChat is doing different?

We say that WeChat users are under surveillance because of the type of content that is monitored — specifically, content that is politically sensitive in China. This includes content that is critical of the Chinese government or its policies, as well as content calling for government recognition of human rights, or that mourns the passing of rights activists. WeChat’s content monitoring not only differs from other platforms in what content is monitored but also in how the monitoring system is trained and selectively applied. Our research demonstrates that content sent by non-China-registered accounts is under political surveillance and used to invisibly build up WeChat’s censorship system for China-registered accounts. To our knowledge, among the monitoring systems employed by social media companies, WeChat’s surveillance system is the only system that monitors content sent by one set of users to enhance the surveillance and censorship of another set.

How do these findings add to our understanding of digital censorship in China?

To our knowledge, our research is the first of its kind that is able to provide technical evidence that WeChat — an application with a global presence — conducts surveillance on international users, and uses such surveillance to expand its censorship capabilities targeting China-registered users. Previous work on digital censorship in China focuses mainly on how censorship works and what type of content is blocked in China. Our findings are especially significant against the backdrop of the global expansion of Chinese companies, which face the balancing act of presenting a compelling experience to attract international users while controlling politically sensitive information due to regulatory pressure at home.

What is the scale of censorship in China?

China has an expansive system of censorship that includes restrictions on the Internet, applications, and media.

All Internet platforms operating in China must follow local laws and regulations regarding content controls. The companies that provide these services are held liable for content on their platforms and risk fines or losing their business license if they do not follow content regulations. What is complex about this system is that the content regulations are vaguely defined. For example, it is prohibited to post content that “disrupts social order and stability,” but it’s not clear how that determination is made. Companies may receive general directives during events that are politically sensitive to the government, but our research shows that there is no centralized list of keywords given to companies to censor. As a result, companies have to decide how to implement censorship and the specific content to censor to ensure they are within the broad guidelines and directives given by the government.

Our previous research shows that WeChat often broadly censors content during critical periods such as the passing of Liu Xiaobo, the 19th National Communist Party Congress, and most recently the coronavirus pandemic.

What are the potential legal issues around these findings? Aren’t privacy policies supposed to warn users about this type of monitoring?

App store operators such as Apple and Google require developers to include privacy policies with their apps. Many countries also have laws requiring companies to explain how they collect, process, and store data. Our research shows that the privacy policies and terms of service documents associated with WeChat International do not adequately inform users about how their data might be used.

In response to this failing, privacy regulators in some jurisdictions may have grounds to fine the company for misleading users. Depending on the regulator, fines could range from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. In other jurisdictions, such as Canada, residents could complain to their federal privacy regulator and that regulator could ultimately provide non-binding recommendations for how the company must modify its services.

App store operators, such as Apple and Google, could also take action and delist the application from their stores on the basis of misleading consumers and presenting inaccurate privacy information.

Finally, government committees might investigate how WeChat has integrated content surveillance into their application. Outcomes from such investigations could include banning certain sectors of government from using the service, or even compelling app stores to delist it based on national security threats.

How is this study related to previous Citizen Lab research that documented censorship of COVID-19 content on WeChat?

Our last report on WeChat censorship documented how COVID-19-related content was broadly censored on the platform. Because of WeChat’s “one app, two systems” censorship design, the COVID-19 censorship affects all China-registered accounts regardless of where the users are physically located.

In our latest report, we show that the scope of WeChat’s information control goes beyond China-registered accounts, and that WeChat implements surveillance among its non-China-registered accounts. Even though we did not conduct sampling and content analysis of COVID-19 content in this latest report, our study suggests that WeChat could potentially use communications among international users on the topic of COVID19 to expand its domestic censorship list.

The screenshot below shows an illustration of WeChat COVID-19 censorship we discovered in previous research. A user attempts to send messages containing the censored keyword combination “美国疾控中心” (US Center for Disease Control) and “冠状病毒” (coronavirus). The user with the China account does not receive the messages because they contain the censored keyword combination.

In this report we uncovered how WeChat implements surveillance among international users. We will continue to monitor WeChat’s surveillance of non-China-registered user’s images and documents, and we will continue to investigate how such surveillance may apply to other media such as chat message text.

What are your plans for future research?

WeChat (Weixin 微信 in Chinese) is one of the most popular social media apps in China, with 1.15 billion monthly active users globally as of late 2019. Since 2013, WeChat has stopped disclosing the number of its international users. According to the most recent available data, the app has amassed over 100 million overseas registrants. The application is owned and operated by Tencent, one of China’s largest technology companies.

WeChat has a variety of features including instant messaging (e.g., one-to-one private chat, group chat), WeChat Moments (functionality that resembles Facebook’s Timeline where users can share text-based updates, upload images, and share short videos or articles with their friends), and the Public Account platform (a blogging-like platform that allows individual writers as well as businesses to write for general audiences).

Previous Citizen Lab research has shown that WeChat enables censorship of users with accounts registered to mainland China phone numbers. Censorship on the platform is dynamic and reacts to current events such as the National Communist Party Congress and the outbreak of COVID-19.

The 19th National Communist Party Congress was held from October 18-24 2017. WeChat blocked a broad range of content related to the Congress including neutral references to official party policies and ideology.

Remembering Liu Xiaobo: Analyzing censorship of the death of Liu Xiaobo on WeChat and Weibo

On July 13, 2017, Liu Xiaobo, China’s only Nobel Peace Prize winner and its most famous political prisoner died from complications due to liver cancer. He was detained in December 2008 for his participation with “Charter 08”, a manifesto that called for political reform and an end to one-party rule. Following the death of Liu Xiaobo, the scope of censorship of keywords and images on WeChat related to him expanded. Our analysis of WeChat keyword-based censorship shows that after his death messages containing his name in English and in both simplified and traditional Chinese are blocked. His death is also the first time we see image filtering in one-to-one chat, in addition to image filtering in group chats and WeChat moments.

We (can’t) Chat: “709 Crackdown” Discussions Blocked on Weibo and WeChat

This report analyzes the information control practices related to a national crackdown on Chinese rights lawyers and activists on two leading Chinese social media networks. We document search filtering on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like service, as well as keyword and image censorship on WeChat.

What is WeChat? WeChat is a multi-purpose messaging and social media app which is prevalent in China and other countries and areas. But from time to time, we can hear such complaints from WeChat users that they can’t login WeChat on their Android, iPhone and Windows phone.

“WeChat won’t let me login!” Certainly it will drive you crazy if you can not login this Chinese chat app at the beginning of the day. If you encounter this issue too, what you should do is to calm down and work out what’s wrong with your WeChat. Here are some of the tips and tricks that can help you to do a quick check-and-repair for WeChat glitches.

1) Clear all the data of WeChat by going to Settings > Apps > WeChat > Clear Data, then uninstall WeChat and reinstall it. 2) Make sure you have downloaded WeChat from the official app store. If not, you have to uninstall the old WeChat app and download it from the official Google Play store or Apple App store. 3) Check if you are using an old version of WeChat. If so, upgrade the app to the latest version. If there is an error in updating the app, you can try clearing all the app data and uninstall the app. Then install the app from the official site again.

If these little tricks couldn’t save your way out of the problem, there may be other reasons of this error. And normally, the WeChat login problem can be summarized into 5 cases:

Case 1. Forget WeChat Login Password

If you have tried several possible passwords and you are sure that you have forgotten the WeChat login password, don’t worry and here are two ways for your reference.

1) If you have linked WeChat account with QQ account, email address and phone number, you can login WeChat via one of these account without entering the password. 2) You can reset your WeChat passcode. On the login page, hit Forgot password? > Request Retrieval, and then confirm it to submit your request. Then you will receive a SMS message with a new passcode. And then you can login WeChat with this new code. Note: after logging in WeChat with the new passcode, you are required to link your phone number/email address/QQ account to your WeChat once again.

Case 2. Can’t Receive WeChat Verification Code

When you login WeChat with the linked account but never receive the verification code via SMS or email, you can check these:

1) Make sure you enter the right phone number or email address, otherwise you can never receive the verification code. 2) Check if the verification messages is blocked by your phone’s security app. If so, you should find the blocked message in the spam folder or close the security app and request for a new verification message. 3) Maybe you request for the code too frequently and enter the wrong code to verify. In this case, you need to exit the login page and wait for a minute. Then login and verify once again. 4) If your SIM card is placed improperly or is not working, you will not receive the code. Please insert the SIM card to another phone and check if it works.

Case 3. Filed to Login WeChat on A New Device

If you are unable to login WeChat on a new iPhone/Android mobile, you can attempt to: Open WeChat on your new device, and tap “Unable to Login” on the login page. Then go with the instructions to retrieve a new password. Once your request is approved, you will receive a message telling you the new WeChat login passcode within 24 hours. Finally, login WeChat with the new code on your new phone.

Case 4. WeChat Login was Blocked

When you can login WeChat because your account has been blocked, you can try these 3 methods. 1) Uninstall WeChat from your device, and download it again from the official app store. 2) Stop using Android emulator or unofficial plugins to run WeChat, instead, use it in a secure way. 3) Don’t spread prohibitive messages on WeChat, such as lewd contents, violent materials, scam, inappropriate rumors or annoying ads and etc.

Case 5. Can’t Login WeChat by Using QR Code

Some users may want to login and use WeChat without mobile phone. Yes, you can scan the QR code to login the web WeChat on computer, instead of logging in WeChat app with an account and its password. However, some may fail to scan the code for some reasons. Open hardware monitor incorrect cpu core. To fix this, you can:

1) Update your browser to the latest version. If the version of the browser is too old, the QR code may not appear. So you have to check the version and upgrade it, in order to support the QR code. 2) Make sure your internet connection is in good condition. You have to connect you phone and computer to a good network connection, so as to login WeChat successfully. 3) Adjust the brightness of the computer screen. Neither the computer screen is too bright nor too dark, the phone camera has difficulty in scanning the code on it. So you should go to the computer brightness setting and adjust the screen brightness.

Resolved Issues

Virtual machine fails to start, if Fusion is deployed to macOS 10.14.5 or above host that does not have Internet access

After using Fusion mass deploy package (DeployVMware Fusion.mpkg) to deploy Fusion to a macOS 10.14.5 or above, which has no Internet access, Fusion kernel extensions cannot be loaded when the deployed Fusion is launched, due to which virtual machine fails to start.

This issue is now resolved.

The signature on the VMware Fusion.app is invalidated after it is upgraded with Autoupdate.

If the VMware Fusion.app is upgraded to a newer release by the built-in software updater, the signature on VMware Fusion.app is invalidated after the upgrade.

On an iMac Pro or Mac Pro machine, the macOS 10.15 virtual machine panics while booting up

On an iMac Pro or Mac Pro physical machine, if you use Fusion 11.5 to create a new macOS 10.15 virtual machine, with operating system version greater than macOS 10.15 Beta 5, the macOS virtual machine can install and boot up successfully.

However if you use Fusion 11.5 to upgrade an existing macOS virtual machine from an older version (macOS 10.15 Beta 5 or lower) to a version greater than macOS 10.15 Beta 5, the macOS virtual machine panics in the bootup process after the upgrade.

On macOS 10.15 Catalina host, if you copy a file inside a virtual machine, the file will be pasted to host right after you move mouse out of the virtual machine window.

If you copy a file inside a virtual machine, the file will be pasted to the /tmp/VMwareDnd/ folder on host right after you move mouse out of the virtual machine window, this is not supposed to happen as the file is expected to be pasted to the host only after the paste operation is performed. SpeedFan is a program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. I recently purchased a XPS 15 9530? Is there a Dell supplied (or recommended) utility to monitor the hardware, like CPU temperature, fan speed etc? Some systems come w utility to do additional things, like display BIOS version (and update if necessary), do hardware checks like memory etc. HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors: voltages, temperatures, fans speed. The program handles the most common sensor chips, like ITE® IT87 series, most Winbond® ICs, and others.

Preface

Many users test or use Argus Monitor because they are looking for the best fan control program. Is Argus Monitor the best fan control program? In our opinion, there is no 'best software' for this purpose. Other programs are cheaper (or even free), but either offer only limited functionality or are much more difficult to configure. We try to find a compromise to allow maximum flexibility in fan control with a user interface that is as intuitive as possible.

Even if we try to make everything in the program as self-explanatory as possible, this is not always possible in the context of tooltips and short texts. Therefore we provide this manual in order to describe Argus Monitor's fan control options in more detail if required.

Suggestions and improvements are of course always welcome, even if we are not always able to implement every wish.

General information

With Argus Monitor you have the possibility to control the speed of the housing and CPU fans installed in your PC depending on various temperature sources. Furthermore, it is possible to control the graphic card fans depending on the graphic card temperature.

It is also possible to manually set the fan speeds to fixed values.

The control is only active as long as Argus Monitor is running. After exiting Argus Monitor, the values that were active when the program was started are restored (in general, this should be the control via the BIOS).

For both GPU fans and fans connected to the mainboard, you can specify separately whether the fan control settings should be activated automatically the next time the program is started.

The 30-day trial version offers the full range of functions, i.e. there are no restrictions regarding supported hardware or temperature sources. If you want to use our program for fan control, we recommend to test it extensively within the test period, whether it meets your expectations.

Prerequisites

The prerequisite for using the fan control is that your hardware is supported by Argus Monitor. This is the case for almost all mainboards and graphics cards, but individual channels may not be controllable. This is due either to the design of the mainboard by the mainboard manufacturer or to the monitoring chip used on the mainboard.

It is not advisable to use other software for fan control at the same time, as the fan ducts are an exclusive resource that can only be controlled by one program at a time.

The control of fans on notebooks is generally problematic (with the exception of most Thinkpad models from Lenovo), as these rarely allow external access to the fan control.

Argus Monitor supports many monitoring chips of the well-known manufacturers ITE, Winbond, Fintek, Nuvoton and SMSC.

All values available within Argus Monitor can be used as temperature sources:

CPU temperature

GPU temperature

Temperature channels of the SuperIO monitoring chip(s)

Hard disk/SSD temperatures

GPU fan control

The graphics card fan can be controlled via the 'GPU' page. With the checkbox Set last setting at startup you can specify that the settings made should be automatically applied each time Argus Monitor is started.

Manual control at constant speed

If you want to operate the fan of the graphics card at a fixed speed, select Manual mode as controller, set the slider to the desired control value and press the Apply button.

Control GPU fan dependent on GPU temperature

To control the graphics card fan based on the GPU temperature, you must define a characteristic curve that determines which fan speed should be set for which temperature. To do this, select Software controlled as the controller and then configure the desired characteristic via the Curve button.

In the configuration dialog for the characteristic curves, you can save and reload various characteristic curves.

A more detailed description of the function of the characteristic curve can be found below in the description of the control of fans connected to the mainboard.

Control of chassis and CPU fans

The settings for the control of case and CPU fans are made via the 'Mainboard' page on the bottom Fan Control.

With the checkbox Set last setting at startup you can specify that the settings made should be applied automatically each time Argus Monitor is started.

Initial configuration

Before using fan control for the first time, you should adjust the temperature sources and fan channels to your hardware and your needs once. In this step you can name temperature sources and fan channels and define which sensors and fans appear in the user interface. This step cannot be performed automatically by Argus Monitor because neither the assignment of the temperature sensors nor that of the fan channels is standardized and depends on the motherboard used.

The picture shows the configuration dialog for selecting the temperature channels of one source (SuperIO monitoring chip, AIO liquid cooler, power supply, ...). Using the dropdown menu in the top left of this dialog you can select the source you want to configure. You reach this dialog in the settings in the category Mainboard / Temperatures by pressing the button Configuration.

Use the Show checkboxes to specify which of the channels Argus Monitor should use. You can use the text boxes to assign an individual name to each channel. The current measured value is displayed below the name to indicate to which of the channels a temperature sensor is connected. A selection of up to 14 channels is possible. Especially on mainboards with several independent temperature sources, individual temperature sensors are often connected to both sources and additionally to several temperature channels.

Analogous to the configuration of the temperature channels, the fan configuration can be adapted in this dialog. You reach this dialog in the settings in the category Mainboard / Fans by pressing the button Configuration.

The currently measured speed is displayed below the individually configurable name. Up to 14 fans can be selected for use in Argus Monitor by setting the checkboxes labeled Show.

Analogous to the situation with the temperatures, it is also valid with the fans that its values could be available both at both sources and parallel at several channels if necessary. The speed values under the name should change then in agreement, whereby however not necessarily the exact same speed value is measured. In such cases you should at least select the channel for which a control is possible (unfortunately this can only be found out by trying it out) if you need a control for this fan.

Every fan channel offers some advanced option you can configure. The details are described below. The advanced options can be configured b clicking the button shown in the image above. This button is only visible if fan control for this channes is either in Manual or Software mode.

You can also use this dialog to assign a new name to the fan if desired.

Configuration of the minimum permissible output value and the starting behaviour for fan control

In the configuration dialog for the advanced fan channel options (see image below), the minimum permissible output value and the startup behaviour can be individually configured for each of the fans.

Except for a few PWM-controlled fans, there is a 'forbidden' range for all fans in which they cannot be controlled safely. For security reasons Argus Monitor uses a default setting of 40%. With the option Minimum control value, from which the fan can be operated safely you can set the smallest permissible value, with which the fans can still be controlled safely. A control value of 0% is always possible regardless of this setting, in order to switch off the fans completely if required (some PWM-controlled fans, however, still prevent the complete switch-off of the fan internally).

Configuration of individual values for fan start from standstill

Most fans allow to be brought to a complete standstill by appropriate control. However, as a rule, the minimum permissible value set with the option Minimum control value above which the fan can be safely operated for normal operation is not sufficient to restart the fan safely from standstill. For this reason Argus Monitor controls the fans for a short time with a higher value to ensure a safe start. The default value for this is two seconds and 60% to ensure a safe start in any case. With very fast reacting fans, however, this value can be too high and lead to an audible start with a short-term high speed. In these cases you can individually configure a different value for each fan channel. Two independent parameters can be set for this. With the option Minimum output value for safe starting from standstill. you define the value with which the fan is operated for starting from standstill and with the option Time duration for safe starting from standstill. you determine the time duration with which this happens.

Rate limit for fan control output value

To prevent sudden spikes in fan control output you can configure the maximum change of fan speed per second. The configuration can be done dependent on if the new control value is be smaller or bigger than the last one. The default values still allow pretty responsive fan control.

Available methods for fan control

Manual control at constant speed

If you want to operate a channel temperature-independently at constant speed, select Manual mode as controller for the corresponding channel, set the desired control value with the slider and confirm with the button Apply.

Control as a function of one or more temperature sources

To control a fan based on one or more temperature sources, first select Software controlled as the controller type for the fan channel. Then select the temperature source according to which the speed is to be determined. The following temperature sources are available:

CPU temperature (the maximum value of all CPU core temperatures)

GPU temperature

Combined/Medium CPU and GPU Temperatures

Temperatures of all selected temperature channels of the available monitoring chips

SSD/hard disk temperatures

Both the CPU temperature and the GPU temperature can also be used as an average value over an adjustable period of time.

In addition, various combinations of temperature sources are available:

avg. (CPU, GPU)

max. (CPU, GPU)

avg. (CPU, GPU), filtered over (m) sec

max. (CPU, GPU), filtered over (n) sec

max. HDD/SSD temperature of all internal HDDs/SSDs

Multiple Controllers

The determination of the combined temperature value for each of the options is calculated as follows:

Arithmetic mean value of CPU and GPU temperature: (T_cpu + T_gpu) / 2

Maximum value of CPU and GPU temperature: max(T_cpu, T_gpu)

The moving average value from 1) over a period of a total of (m) seconds (sum of all measured values by number of measured values)

The moving average value of 3) over a period of a total of (n) seconds (sum of all measured values by the number of measured values).

Advanced Advanced option for advanced users that calculates up to four independent controls from any four sources (see below for a description of how to use them)

The desired time for averaging the temperatures provided for fan control can be adjusted in the settings.

Characteristic curve based control

All controllers are based on characteristic curves which determine the relationship between the temperature of the selected temperature source (see last section) and the control value for the associated fan duct. The characteristic curve itself is defined by moving the control points (either with the mouse or with the keyboard using TAB/Cursor keys). If the first control point is moved all the way down, the fan only becomes active at this temperature and remains completely switched off for all lower temperatures.

The minimum permissible PWM value can be specified in the Argus Monitor settings (see above). This defines the range in which the fan cannot be reliably operated. The controller then ensures that the fan is either switched off completely or is operated with at least the specified minimum PWM value. An additional hysteresis allows to ignore fluctuations of the temperature by a certain amount, in order not to cause an audible reaction of the fan with every small temperature fluctuation, especially with steep characteristic curves.

For special requirements, it is also possible to determine the speed of a fan duct using a combination of up to four individual controllers. To do this, first select Software controlled as the controller type and then Multiple controller from the list of temperature sources. With the button Configure the dialog for setting up the multiple controllers can be opened.

Up to four independently calculated controllers can be defined here - analogous to setting up a single controller. Each of these controllers can have its own temperature source and characteristic curve. All controllers marked in this dialog as activated run independently and each calculate its own manipulated variable. The maximum value is then used to control the associated fan.

Known problems

BIOS fan control mode setting

On some mainboard models we have information from users that even when Argus Monitor controls a certain fan, occasionally and after a certain amount of time a fan might start to spin at full speed for no apparent reason.

This issue is highly dependent on the mainboard model and is a rare case.

To resolve this, it might help to go to the BIOS settings and change the fan settings for this fan from 'Auto' to 'PWM' (for a 4-pin fan) or to 'Voltage' (for a 3-pin fan).

GPU fan control for AMD Radeon RX 5000 series (Navi)

With AMD Radeon RX 5000 series GPUs (Navi) and depending on the version of the Radeon software, it might be necessary to adjust some settings in the Radeon software for Argus Monitor to be able to control the GPU fan:

By default it might be set to 'Tuning Control: Automatic' and Argus Monitor cannot control the fan

Switch 'Tuning Control' to Manual

Enable 'Fan Tuning'

Disable 'Zero RPM'

Possible default setting: 'Tuning Control: Automatic'

Setting 'Advanced Control' should have no influence on Argus Monitor control

AIO liquid coolers

Argus Monitor can control most Corsair and NZXT liquid CPU coolers as well as fan control boards compatible with Corsair CommanderPro.

Not all options of those controllers are available at the moment. What should be possible is the readout of liquid coolant temperature as well as pump/fan monitoring and pump/fan speed control. What is not available is RGB light control if the cooler has RGB lights. We might add RGB light control at a later date if we get enough feedback from Corsair users that this is a desired feature.

Controlling those devices only works if the system service 'CorsairService' and it's associated program iCUE is not running, otherwise Argus Monitor can't safely access the device. The same goes for the software NZXT CAM, which also must not be active in order for Argus Monitor to access the devices.

Different types of fan connections

The following diagrams show various ways to connect fans to PC mainboards, as well as explanations of what this means for their controllability.

Usually you will find information about which fans are supported by your motherboard and how to connect them in the mainboard user manual.

Argus Monitor as application software has no possibility to read out the wiring of the fans used on a certain mainboard via software.

However, as long as the correct fan is installed (a fan with 3-pin or 4-pin connector) or the connected fan is set correctly in the BIOS, Argus Monitor can control both voltage-controlled and PWM-controlled fans and change their speed if a supported SuperIO chip is present.

The following diagrams show different wiring variants for each fan channel of the SuperIO chip.

Variant A) 3-pin fan connector, power supply directly from power supply unit

Wiring A shows a wiring where the mainboard vendor decided against adjusting the fan speed for this fan header. The middle pin on the fan header, which is responsible for supplying the power to the fan, is wired straight to the 12 Volts power supply, so there is no way to control the fan speed via the Super-I/O chip. Only the RPM fan speed can be monitored. Obviously, neither Argus Monitor nor any other software can control such fans.

Variant B) Standard wiring for voltage-controlled 3-pin fan

Wiring B shows the wiring for connecting a standard 3-pin fan which can be voltage controlled. The Super-I/O chip can vary the voltage on the middle pin of the fan header to change the fan speed. Argus Monitor can control such fans.

Variant C) Standard wiring for 3-pin fan with PWM control

Wiring C shows the wiring for connecting a standard 4-pin PWM controlled fan. The fan is powered with a constant 12 Volts supply and the Super-I/O chip can vary the duty rate of the PWM frequency to change the fan speed. Argus Monitor can control such fans. One could also connect a 3-pin fan to the 4-pin header, in this case the fan would run at the 12 Volts rated speed only without the opportunity to control it.

Variant D) 4-pin PWM fan or voltage-controlled 3-pin fan

Wiring D is the most advanced fan connection layout on a mainboard. The user has the possibility to connect either a 3-pin or a 4-pin fan. Both fan types can be controlled. The switching between the voltage control for the 3-pin fan and the PWM control for the 4-pin fan is done by the BIOS, either with such a configuration option or with an auto-detection method. Argus Monitor can control such fans.

Fan control with Argus Monitor is available for wiring variants B, C and D.

Software monitors occur more commonly, sometimes as a part of a widget engine. These monitoring systems are often used to keep track of system resources, such as CPU usage and frequency, or the amount of free RAM. They are also used to display items such as free space on one or more hard drives, the temperature of the CPU and other important components,(2) and networking information including the system IP address and current rates of upload and download. Other possible displays may include the date and time, system uptime, computer name, username, hard drive S.M.A.R.T. data, fan speeds, and the voltages being provided by the power supply.

Less common are hardware-based systems monitoring similar information. Customarily these occupy one or more drive bays on the front of the computer case, and either interface directly with the system hardware or connect to a software(5):p.91 that must involve software.

A further consideration is that a bug in this domain can have severe impact: an extreme case would be 'cause the OS to crash.'(7)
