Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz was trying to change

Not to make any excuses for Pink Diamond but in the context of what happened to Volleyball’s eye, I can sort of understand why Pink Diamond distanced herself from Spinel.

It makes me think that it wasn’t necessarily because PD found Spinel annoying, it was that PD really couldn’t genuinely be happy anymore seeing as she ended up (unintentionally) breaking her original best friend

I’m making the assumption here that PD didn’t want the same thing to happen to Spinel, and in her attempt to completely change, to be distant, and to keep everything in secrecy, she ended up leaving Spinel behind forever

PD might not have realized the damage she would do with keeping secrets. It was the exact same thing she did to everyone else when she decided to fake her own shattering and become Rose Quartz, leader of the Rebellion

Pearl also makes a mention that despite always making an attempt to make Rose happy, she never really could. Spinel couldn’t and Pearl couldn’t. The damage that was done after PD ended up breaking her own Pearl was already too deep. 

This is also the reason why she was secretive and emotionally distant, including, and I would even argue, ESPECIALLY, with her new Pearl. Out of fear to break this new one, she attempted to make this Pearl leave because the chances of this Pearl ending up physically hurt were HUGE 

Rose Quartz went from one extreme to the other. One was not being able to keep in any secrets and throwing tantrums left and right like a spoiled child. Turning to the other extreme, where she was emotionally distant, secretive, and tried to bottle in all of her emotions. 

This is why I also believe she decided to give up her own life to create a new life form who would be better than her in every way possible: Steven was supposed to be what she could never be after all the horrible things she did, things that very clearly weighed on her consciousness

Finally, the episode Volleyball ends with her two Pearls reaching the conclusion that after the incident with Volleyball’s eye cracking, Pink Diamond tried to change, it’s just that Pearl couldn’t understand why because of all the secrecy from PD’s part
