unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.

Reminder that people aren't entitled to see into your decision-making process unless you've agreed that they are. Just told a business acquaintance that I'd "just finished up my previous commitment". It's not their problem to know that it was DND.

I only learned recently that people from Not America don’t specify hard cider and instead it’s just cider.

I know this is a small difference but it is surprisingly one I do sometimes have to lie down on the floor about.

I really love the baklava scene in the old guard, in fact the whole opening scene because it establishes their characters and their relationships so much! Like Andy and Booker don’t hug when they meet, but she’s got Don Quixote for him and he checks in with her about her year out. Booker says he’s in Marrakesh for family at the hotel. Andy hugs Nicky so tenderly and slow it shows the depth of their love for each other, just as Joe giving her a great old bear hug and swinging her around and joking with her shows their relationship too. Booker spikes his own tea, showing he’s hurting, even amongst family and none of them comment on it, showing how they’ve let it slide. Nicky has baklava for Andy, but it’s also for Booker it’s their game together. Even before we know that Joe and Nicky are together, we know that Joe puts up Nicky’s half of the bet money. They’re all so comfortable with each other, and joyful too!

Like in some films we’re shown a team *cough* marvel *cough* and they’re supposed to be close so that later it can be messed with and played around with for kicks and drama but often it’s not believable because there’s no genuine love there, just manufactured and wooden. Here in the first scene we’re left with, firstly a great first impression of each of their characters, but more importantly we’re in no doubt that these 4 aren’t just work colleagues, no Andy, Joe, Nicky, and Booker love each other so much, they’re family, and that’s what makes the emotional pay off so much more heartbreaking later.

there’s absolutely nothing better than reading a 100k word fanfic, that is until you remember you have a body that is starving, thirsty and incredibly sleep deprived and hasn’t used the bathroom since the sun set 8 hours ago

can i jsut say… isnt it insane that polar bears go underground like imagine just walking along with a shovel and u start digging a hole and a bear is in there

marine biology is so scary because it’s such a small field. i was giving a talk on cetaceans and afterward a woman approached me with her husband and she said, “you did very well. [husband’s name] actually pioneered the research and published the first paper on that. We were very impressed by you.”

Which is such a scientific interpretation/public education win I will cherish forever but also for the rest of my life any time I give a talk I will be haunted by the knowledge that the world’s leading expert who literally discovered/invented the topic might be in the room,

which is like, the opposite of what you’re supposed to do for stage fright. In fact I never used to experience stage fright but now I will.
