Mastery Assignment
Over the last month I have had an amazing time writing my very first comic book. I wish that I would have chosen something with a little more action packed and with a little more to write about. I feel like since it was a horror story a lot of the story is told in the look of fear on the face of the characters. This was a challenge to get across in the script. I tried to write in a lot of close ups and a POV shot that showed the inside of the mask.
Another challenge that I had was trying to keep the story with in the parameters of the assignment. The story was a flash fiction piece of only 500 words, but I still wanted to write more and add to it to give it more action. This was especially hard at the end of the book. It was a challenge for me to fit the whole final scene into one page. I would really have liked to have more time to flesh out the character of the wife that finds Hanson’s body.
In the end this was a great month with a lot of things in it that I absolutely loved. I was very glad that I was presented the alternative option and was not forced to stick with the idea of the Gift of the Magi. I think that it is a wonderful story and I really enjoyed reading through some of my fellow students work but I really was excited about writing a comic book.

Branding for Mastery.
The first branding project that I wanted to talk about for this assignment is the one that was done for Deadpool. The things that Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds did to promote that film were amazing. Everything from Christmas skits to Billboards that are just a close up of his crotch, I think that this was a perfect example of knowing your audience and making it work.
The next one that I will talk about is Budweiser. I think that Budweiser did an amazing job at branding after noticing certain trends. They saw two things, first Bud Light has a huge market in people who aren’t big drinkers or aren’t neccesarily “beer” people. Secondly, they noticed the trend of craft beer amongst other demographics. After noticing these things, they decided to angle Budweiser as America’s beer. Even going as far changing the cans and bottles to have AMERICA on the can instead of the name of the beer.
Finally, I would like to talk about Starbuck’s. I think that Starbuck’s does a great job of branding because they are the biggest coffee company in the world. They do a great job of pushing the double-tailed mermaid logo and showing that they do a lot of great coffees.

Mastery Journal Assignment: EWS
This month in class, we had to come up with and write the first episode of a webisode series. This was a lot of fun and I fell in love with the idea that I came up with. I really had to work hoard to flesh out these characters and when I went to write the first draft I ended up with it being 18 pages. I went ahead and saved that in case I want to make it an hour long show later. The humor for the characters really flowed for me as I pictured each character as a different person that I grew up with and have interacted with multiple times.
The setting was in New Orleans which was easy for me because that is where I am from and I have been making that walk to work every day for years. I’ve even done work as a Private Investigator and I know how that goes and how awkward it can make you feel. My favorite thing about the script, however, is that in the long version I have my character’s mental illness’s actually helping him throughout the case. So, his auditory hallucinations, for example, tell him to stop and help a homeless person. When he decides to listen to them it is this homeless man that helps him evade the police in later episodes.
The main plot line of the episode was a little hard to get through, because its written as a mystery so I was trying to lay groundwork for future episodes while, simultaneously, make it funny and make it work as a stand alone episode, too.
I definitely loved it and I can see that writing for a episodic television show is something that I can see myself doing as a career. I really enjoyed the whole process while having different characters set up and setting ideas up for later episodes.

I love this quote so much because I realize that it is slightly petty. Throughout a person’s journey they normally make a lot of enemies. This is a good quote to speak to that.
