"I don't know if I'll be able to help you out much in this department," Mavis said, not looking up from the back of the Emily Henry book she'd randomly picked up. "Romance is kinda my one blind spot too. But if you're open to some good nonfiction, or sci-fi. Or poetry. Then I can do that."

She put the book back without reading the entire synopsis and picked up a Danielle Steel novel and flipping to a random page. "Actually, if you want some poorly written porn, this might be the one."

Only a week had passed since Henry's book had been released and he was surprised that sales were doing as well as they were. He knew a part of it was the anonymity with his pen name. Essentially, the author appeared out of nowhere a few years ago. He'd thought about publishing his own book as an indie book, but then a bigger publishing company actually loved it. Seeing his book in the shop was honestly still surreal. "I need a good book rec," he said to the person beside him. The romance section was filled with a bunch of books he was seriously not interested in. "This isn't a genre I read a ton of."

𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐧 : are there any details from your muse's childhood that sticks with them - good or bad?

"I feel like I remember everything, really, even though sometimes I wish I didn't. When I learned about repressed memories as a trauma response I thought, 'oh, maybe I could've used some of that.'

The bad tends to outweigh the good, and I've talked about the bad more than I want to, but here's something good — just a little thing: I stole this book on astronomy from a library when I was maybe...thirteen? And I went through this whole astronomy phase, so I got a bunch of these little stick-on glow in the dark stars from a dollar store and put them all over the inside of the van in the shapes of constellations.

Don't really know why, when I could've gone outside and looked at the stars at any time, but. I don't know. They were kind of comforting."

"It's what everyone says it is. Boring, vaguely soul crushing. Though I will say that I miss working regular hours and taxes being simple. I'm too afraid of the IRS to not report my tips."

"I might have a slightly more pessimistic take on it. I think people are convinced that bartenders are easier to take home, like some fucked up fantasy fulfillment."

Mavis barked out a laugh, which then faded when she realized that it hadn't been delivered as a joke. "Wait, are you being serious? You're not, like, a murderer or something, are you?"

The look on Cole’s face showed the wheels were churning but considering he was still on parole he wasn’t sure how it would end for him. “I probably shouldn’t,” it was obvious he wanted too though and was still contemplating. “It might send me back to prison.” @maviscampbell

"Oof. I mean, I'm not super into this stuff myself, but even I've heard that being a Pisces man is kind of an immediate red flag. But I've also heard a lot of shit about Sagittariuses, so what the fuck do I know?"

Mavis picked up a crystal that promised "serenity, higher realms, positivity," shrugged, and held onto it to pay for later. Although not much of a mystic, she was happy to welcome anything that had even the slightest chance of emanating some good vibes, and the rock was pretty if nothing else.

"Oh, November 24th. That makes me a Sagittarius but a cusp Scorpio, whatever that means."

"'Thank god that's over,' probably. It didn't really have anything to do with the guy, it's just that I was nineteen and being a virgin at nineteen made me feel like a fuckin' loser. Felt more like I was crossing something off a to-do list than anything."

"I haven't spent a lot of time on trains — apart from the L, I guess, but for some reason that doesn't register as trains to me even though it objectively is. I spent more hours than I can count on the brown line going from Ravenswood to the Loop and back. Saw a lot of weird shit, for sure, but nothing stands out as being particularly insane. Maybe I just got numb to the crazy at some point."

"I think that you and I have wildly different taste in men."

When Mavis bothered with men at all, her tastes veered more toward Matt Dillon in The Outsiders or Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club. Rough around the edges, probably a little stupid, and definitely not marriageable.

"There's also always...going out to bars and hoping to be hit on by Mr. Right. Speed dating. Meet-cutes at the airport. Sounds like those are more your style. And you're cute as fuck, so you have a leg up."

Honestly, Billie didn't get as hung up on looks anymore as she might have done in her twenties. Sure, it was great to be attracted to someone, but she found now that it was more important to be with a good person.

"On the bright side, it would mean the guy would still read a physical newspaper. That in itself is very attractive."

She nudged the guy to get his eyes on her and pointed her chin the direction of one offering fresh produce, including tomatoes. "I'll call your bluff."

"Do you have any tomatoes? 'Cause I'll do it." Cole lets out a heavy sigh, staring blankly at the band on stage that was progressively getting worse. "I would actually do it for free at this stage. This whole thing is fucking insane."

"Yeah, I've kinda been getting that," Mavis said, slightly chagrined. "I was in a corporate job before this — I'm not gonna bore you with the details there — but it's not like I'd never worked a service job before. I waited tables back in college, which, you know, built some character, but this has been a whole new animal. I didn't think that that kind of audacity actually existed in people, but yeah, they can be fucking dicks."

The bartender motions latently with her spare hand, watching as the line of booze-up patrons file out of the bar. "I never liked working at clubs. I've been a bartender since I was 21—" Legally, at least "—and my worst experiences have always been there."

"Oh, I remember. And you know why — I thought to myself, 'ha ha, that's gotta be an exaggeration,' but then I thought, 'maybe it's not, since this town has a new party to attend every other day.' I even kept the dress I wore to yours just in case."

Mavis had opted for something a little less...nostalgic for this, though, and was glad for it. She'd been happy to lean into that vibe for Cricket's birthday, but she had the feeling that she'd stick out like a sore thumb if she'd reworn the same blue tulle disaster at an event where some people looked like they'd just come from Paris Fashion Week.

"Yours was better, by the way. And I'm not just saying that. This one is just making me feel like the popular girls are laughing at my dress behind my back. Again."
