It wasn’t rare that the team stopped at a bar after tough cases or to celebrate or just to unwind. Tonight wasn’t any different, everyone agreed that once they landed back in Virginia, they’d head to the usual bar and have some drinks. It wasn’t long until some of them started leaving, Penelope, Morgan and Emily being the only ones left to enjoy their drinks. Emily offered to pay for the next round, so she made her way to the bar. But soon enough, her attention turned to something different, or to a certain person; you.
It started with a simple ‘hi’, and not even five minutes later, both of you were engaged in conversation. Morgan and Penelope had noticed, so they decided to let Emily have her own fun. One, two, three drinks later and both of you just didn’t want the night to end. There was a moment of silence between the two of you, Emily staring at you intently, a smile on her face, which made you feel all giddy and shy.
“I think your friends left.” You said, trying to hide your blushing.
“Good. Means I have more time with you.” Emily grinned, not being able to take her eyes away from you.
You swallowed hard at her words and the way she kept staring at you. You chuckled nervously and looked down at your glass before you looked back up at her, smiling softly. “Do I have something on my face?” You joked.
Emily chuckled, shaking her head gently. She couldn't help but adore how adorable you looked, all nervous and flustered. "No, you're flawless." She answered, her gaze roaming over your features. Emily leaned a bit closer, her elbow resting on the bar as she continued to study you. "I just can't seem to look away."
You tried to keep your composure, but her words made your heart race a little faster. You took a sip of your drink, hoping the alcohol would help hide your blushing cheeks. "Flatterer," You responded, playfully rolling your eyes. "I'm sure you say that to everyone."
Emily let out a soft laugh, absolutely adoring the way you blushed and tried to hide it. She leaned even closer, her hand almost touching yours, as she lowered her voice slightly. "Not really
I don’t normally do this but
there’s just something about you." She said, her gaze flickering down to your lips before meeting your eyes again.
“I don’t normally do this either
” You said softly.
There was a moment of silence between the two of you, Emily’s intense gaze never leaving yours as a smirk appeared on her lips, her eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and
desire. It was insane how a woman you had just met like an hour ago, had you so captivated and
made you want more.
"Wanna get out of here?” You asked before you overthought about it.
Emily's smirk turned into a soft smile, her heart racing at the idea of spending more time with you alone. Without a second thought, she nodded her head, already starting to slide off her barstool. "Yeah...I'd love to." She said, her eyes locked onto yours. Emily placed a hand on your back, guiding you away from the bar. She gestured towards the exit, her hand still on your lower back, as if it was meant to be there. "Your place or mine?"
As soon as she asked if her place or yours, reality struck you. Was this really happening? You had never done this, your friends had convinced you to talk to her, but you didn’t know if this was actually right. For many reasons. This would end bad.
“Your place if you don’t mind. I
” You huffed a chuckle. “I have a mess in mine.”
The cool night air hit your skin, making you shiver slightly as you walked. Emily noticed this, and without even thinking about it, she moved to take off her coat, draping it over your shoulders. It was surprisingly comfortable, and the coat smelled like her, which only made your stomach flutter even more. Emily's heart melted at the sight of you wearing her coat. She had no idea she could get any more enamored with you, but here you were, looking cute as hell in her coat.
“I’m alright, I run hot anyway.” She smiled softly. Soon enough, they were walking towards her car, Emily letting go of you for just a moment to unlock it. She opened the passenger side door for you with a smile.
The drive to Emily's place was quiet, the only sound filling the air was the radio playing soft music in the background. Emily couldn't help sneaking glances at you every few seconds. She was already mentally scolding herself. Getting interested and attached to someone she had just met was not in her character. She was a professional, she knew better. But there was something about you that just drove her insane. She wanted to touch you, to pull you closer and never let you leave. Luckily, they soon arrived at her apartment.
Emily parked the car outside her apartment complex, a small but cozy place. She killed the engine and stepped out of the car, quickly doing her way over to your side to open the door for you. She took your hand as you got out of the car, her fingers lacing with yours. The touch alone sent shivers down her spine. Emily led you up to her apartment in silence, stealing frequent glances at you. She unlocked the door and held it open for you, gesturing for you to go inside. Her apartment was cozy and neat, the walls adorned with pictures and books.
Emily watched as you walked in, noticing the way you looked around curiously. Once we both were inside, she closed the door behind her, leaning against it for a moment. Her heart was still racing as she studied you with those intense brown eyes, her gaze slowly travelling down your body, taking in every little detail.
"You have a nice place. Dare I say that it seems very you.” You smiled softly as you turned around to look at Emily.
Emily blushed slightly at the compliment. She didn't know why she was acting like a flustered fool. She was a trained profiler, for crying out loud. She could handle this. Right? She pushed off the door, taking a few steps forward towards you. "Thank you." Emily murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Slowly, she reached out, her fingers gently tracing the fabric of her coat that was still draped over your shoulders. She let her hand lightly brush against your collarbone before she spoke again. "I really don’t normally do this." She said, her voice soft with barely concealed desire.
You knew this was a bad idea. You had never done this either. But God, you couldn’t help it. You couldn't stop yourself. You wanted her. One night wouldn’t hurt. She had completely enthralled you. "I haven’t either
" You murmured, your body moving even closer, your chest nearly touching hers. “But if you don’t kiss me right now
I might just pass out.” You chuckled softly.
Emily smirked at your words. You were going to be the death of her. The way you reacted to her touch, with shivers and soft gasps. She wanted – no, she needed to hear more. At the distance of a few millimeters, Emily could feel your breaths on her skin. Your chests were almost touching, and she could feel the heat radiating from your body. The air was charged with electricity, and Emily couldn't resist anymore. Cupping your face in her hands, she closed the distance and captured your lips in a searing kiss.
The kiss started off slowly, Emily's lips moving against yours with gentle but firm pressure. She angled her head slightly to deepen it, her hands moving from your face to your waist while your arms wrapped loosely around her shoulders, their grip tightening as she pulled you impossibly closer to her. Emily's body was pressed against yours, her curves molding into your form as she continued to kiss you. Her tongue traced your lip, asking for entrance, which you gladly granted. She groaned softly, the kiss quickly growing more heated. Emily's tongue darted into your mouth, exploring its sweet depths. She needed more of you, needed to taste more of you. One of her hands tangled into your hair, the other traveling down your back, her fingers dancing along the fabric of your shirt.
She backed you up towards the nearest wall, pinning you against it with her hips. She had you caged in, unable to escape her, but God, neither of you wanted to. Emily pressed herself more firmly against you, trapping you between her body and the wall. Her hands moved to your thigh, lifting it to hook it around her hip, wanting to be even closer to you. She broke the kiss, her mouth leaving a trail of hot kisses down your jawline and neck, stopping just above your collarbone to gently bite down on the sensitive skin there. You shivered as her teeth grazed your skin, unable to suppress the gasp that escaped your lips. You were already a mess, and Emily was just getting started. She was completely addicted to the way you reacted to her touch, the way you melted into her arms.
She bit and sucked lightly on the sensitive place she had found on your neck, wanting to leave a mark, wanting to claim you as hers even if it was just for one night. Emily's hands roamed freely over your body, wanting to touch every inch of your skin, to commit every curve and shape to memory. She knew this was not supposed to mean anything, one night of pleasure and then never seeing each other again, but God, she couldn't get enough of you.
She pulled back just enough to look at you, her eyes dark with desire and need. She took in your disheveled appearance, your swollen lips, and flushed cheeks, and it took every bit of her willpower not to kiss you again immediately. Her gaze never left your eyes as her hands slipped beneath your shirt, palms slowly gliding up your sides, relishing the shiver that her touch brought. She pushed her coat off you and then proceeded to push the fabric of your shirt up, exposing more of your skin to the cool air.
Emily's breath hitched as her eyes traveled down, taking in every inch of your bare skin, and she couldn't help but curse. "You have no idea what you're doing to me." She murmured, her voice thick with arousal.
“Then show me
” You whispered breathlessly, staring into her eyes as you ran your fingers through her smooth raven hair.
Emily nodded as she panted heavily. “I will
” She whispered before she captured your lips in hers again. The night they had ahead

“So
you’re telling me that you’ve texted this girl, but you haven’t been able to get her to go on a date with you? Why?!” Penelope was engrossed in the conversation with Emily. Both heading to JJ’s house to pick her up for girls’ night.
Emily groaned as she looked over at Penelope, rolling her eyes at her question. It's not like she hadn't been trying. "I don't think she's interested." Emily mumbled, leaning back in her car seat. "She seems to keep finding reasons to not go out with me."
She sighed, the memory of multiple failed attempts to get you out on a simple date with her still fresh in her mind. It was starting to be a little humiliating. She was normally not one to be so desperate for attention from one person.
Penelope chuckled at Emily, finding her annoyance a little bit amusing. She couldn't believe that Emily was actually being all flustered over a girl. It was adorable, in a way. "Have you tried being more direct with her?" Penelope inquired, glancing over at Emily.
Emily sighed, frustrated at the question. Of course she'd tried being more direct. "Yeah, of course I did. But every time I ask her out, she suddenly has something that comes up. I'm starting to think she's avoiding me on purpose."
Penelope raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by how worked up Emily was becoming over this. She found it adorable how much this girl was getting under her skin. But also, a bit strange, considering this was not typical Emily behaviour. “You know
I believe that you had really bad luck, and unfortunately, your pretty girl is married and truly wanted a one-time thing.”
Emily rolled her eyes, letting out a sharp laugh. Penelope was just trying to tease her now, and she was doing a damn good job at it, too. "Ha ha, very funny, Penelope. Yeah, sure, I'm just having really bad luck here." Emily remarked sarcastically as she parked her car and killed the engine. "And why are you so sure she's married? Or that she just wanted a one-time thing? Maybe she's just really busy. She’s a nurse.” She then looked back at Penelope before they left her car.
Penelope stifled a giggle, knowing that she was just making Emily increasingly agitated as they continued to talk about it. "Oh, honey, nurses also have their free days, and apparently, she’s busy every time you ask her out," she replied jokingly. "But seriously, it's probably because she's already taken. I mean, come on, you're gorgeous and hot. Any single girl would throw herself at you if they got the chance."
Emily couldn't help but shake her head at Penelope's relentless teasing. She knew her friend was just trying to get under her skin, but it was working. The thought of you being already taken was driving Emily crazy.
"I appreciate the compliment, Pen, but clearly, being hot and gorgeous isn't enough. She still keeps dodging me. Maybe I'm just not her type. Not everyone is into profilers." Emily huffed, crossing her arms over her chest as they walked to JJ’s house.
Penelope chuckled again, enjoying Emily's growing agitation. "Oh, don't give me that, Em. You know you're hot as hell and everyone loves you. And who the hell isn't into hot profilers? That's like the hottest combo." Penelope teased, nudging Emily with her elbow. She walked to JJ’s door and knocked softly. “You’ll find yourself a girl. Maybe tonight.”
Emily rolled her eyes once more, but a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She couldn't stay annoyed with Penelope for long. "Thanks for the pep talk, Pen. Really boosting my confidence here." She replied sarcastically.
The sound of footsteps approaching the door interrupted their conversation as JJ opened it, a warm smile on her face. "Hey girls, you're just in time." She greeted them, stepping aside to let them in. “Will just got here, but I’m just waiting for Harper’s mom to arrive.” JJ smiled softly as she reached for her phone. “She’s in Henry’s class and they’re really good friends, so today it was my turn to bring her home with us.”
“Awe shucks, no worries. We have all night after all, don’t we?!” Penelope smiled widely as she wrapped her arm around Emily. “Plus, we have to be wing women tonight for our girl Prentiss. She just got her heart broken.”
Emily shot Penelope a glare, trying to silence her with a look. She had no interest in being the topic of conversation for the entire night.
JJ let out a soft 'aww' and looked over at Emily with her caring, mom-like expression. "Aw honey, what happened? Did you get ditched on a date or something?" JJ asked, genuine concern in her voice.
Emily groaned, knowing there was no getting out of this conversation now. "It's nothing, really." She muttered, trying to brush off JJ's concern.
Penelope chimed in with a smirk. "Not nothing, she just got rejected by a mystery girl."
JJ raised an eyebrow, now even more interested. She turned her attention back to Emily, a look of curiosity on her face. "Rejected? Emily Prentiss getting rejected? That is a rare sight."
Emily huffed and crossed her arms over her chest, feeling a mix of embarrassment and irritation. Penelope was really enjoying this way too much. "Oh, ha ha. Very funny, guys. I'm glad my suffering amuses you." She grumbled, rolling her eyes.
JJ couldn't help but chuckle, finding Emily's annoyance endearing, in a way. "Oh, come on, Em, lighten up. You know we're just teasing you because we love you."
Penelope giggled, kissing the side of her head and then walking into the living room. “I’ll say goodnight to my precious angel and then we should go.”
But just in time, Henry and Harper came running to where they were, Harper accidentally running into Emily. She looked up at Emily and blushed, shyly smiling up at her. “I sorry, Ms. I didn’t see where I going.”
Emily chuckled softly, shaking her head as the little girl bumped into her. She gently knelt down to be on Harper's eye level. "It's alright, sweetheart. No need to apologize."
Emily ruffled the little girl's hair, her gaze softening as she took her in. The way Harper looked so shy and bashful, it was adorable. But also, as she looked at her, she found something familiar in her. She couldn’t quite figure it out, but she just seemed familiar.
JJ and Will joined them in the living room, both smiling at the sight of Emily interacting with the kids. Will chuckled seeing how Emily looked so maternal and caring around Harpe and Henry. He leaned towards JJ and whispered. "She would be an amazing mother one day."
JJ nodded, agreeing with him. She had always thought that Emily would make a great parent someday and seeing her interact so naturally with the kids just solidified that notion even more. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. JJ went to open it, smiling softly and offering a hug to the girl. “Thought I wouldn’t catch you anymore. I was about to leave.”
“Oh, I am so sorry, JJ. Traffic is hell, and I was held back by a patient. Thank you for taking care of my little one.”
JJ chuckled softly as she shook her head. “Next time, agree with me on a sleepover. I’m sure they’ll both be thrilled.”
She chuckled and nodded. “Next time, promise.”
“Y/n?”
You looked away from JJ and froze the moment you saw Emily just a few feet away from you. Standing right beside Henry and Harper. Your daughter. “Emily?” you asked softly, in disbelief as if she wasn’t right in front of you.
Emily's heart skipped a beat as she heard your voice, her gaze locking onto yours. It was as if time had stopped for a moment. She couldn't believe it, seeing you here, in the flesh. She stood there, a myriad of emotions coursing through her. Shock, surprise, confusion, excitement... all mixing together into an absolute tornado within her. That’s why Harper looked so familiar
she looked so much like you.
Emily took a tentative step forward, her words barely more than a whisper. "Y-you're
 Harper's mom?"
JJ looked back and forth between the two of you, watching the recognition and shock play across both of your faces. She had a feeling that something was going on here. Will and Penelope stood awkwardly in the background, looking just as confused as JJ. Henry and Harper were still blissfully ignorant of the tension in the room, both of them talking happily to each other.
Finally, JJ decided to break the silence, her voice soft but curious. "You two know each other?"
Emily didn't even look away from you, her eyes still locked onto yours. She couldn't find the words to say, her mind still reeling from this unexpected turn of events. She nodded softly at JJ's question, her heart pounding in her chest.
And then it clicked to Penelope, her eyes widening as she realized what was going on. “Oh my god.” She suddenly said, covering her mouth to shut herself up. She looked at JJ as if eyeing her to step away from them.
“Can I
can I borrow Emily from you guys for a bit?” You asked quietly, seeing that Harper was still distracted with Henry and you wanted to keep it that way for a moment longer. Penelope and JJ nodded, still staring at both of you.
You walked outside of JJ’s house, knowing Emily would follow. You didn’t think this would happen. You thought you wouldn’t see her again and
destiny had a funny way of putting you in awkward situations. What were you supposed to say now? Emily followed you outside without hesitation, her mind still racing from the revelation. She couldn't even begin to process the flood of emotions that was coursing through her veins right now. As soon as the door closed behind you both, Emily stopped and turned to face you. She didn't know where to start, so instead, she just blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
"Y-you... you have a child." She said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. It all made sense now. The avoidance, the rejection of the dates, and- “Are you married?”
You rapidly turned to look at Emily, your heart dropping at her last question. “What? No!” You answered without hesitation. “I- no. I’m not married, I
” You sighed softly, running your hands through your hair. “It’s only me and Harper. The
he’s not in the picture.” You shook your head softly.
You stared at Emily for what felt like forever, trying to figure out how to continue, how to explain. “I’m
I’m sorry. That I didn’t tell you I had a daughter. That night
it was the first time in months that I had accepted to go out, since my friends thought it was a good idea. I just
didn’t expect that my night would have a turn of events.” You said the last sentence quietly, hinting that you were not expecting to meet her that night and go home with her.
Emily felt a wave of relief wash over her at your reassurance that you weren't married, but there was still so much to process. She tried to wrap her head around the fact that you had a daughter, a beautiful little girl with your eyes and your smile. She took a step closer to you, her expression softening slightly. "Why... why didn't you tell me?" She inquired, her voice barely above a whisper.
You sighed and leaned back against the wall, your head tilted back slightly as you tried to find the words to explain. "I don't know... I think I was scared. I knew that if I told you I had a daughter, it would've changed everything. And
” You scoffed a little. “We both know it would’ve changed things. People don’t want to get with single mothers. And that night we had was...something else." You smiled a little, pausing to take a deep breath. "I thought it was just going to be a one-night thing, and I didn't want to complicate things. I didn't expect to see you again. Not that I didn’t want to but
I knew you wouldn’t want to after knowing the truth."
Emily felt a pang in her chest as she heard your words. She could understand your reasoning, but it still hurt. "You think I wouldn't want to...?" She repeated softly, shaking her head. "You really think that little of me?" She took another breath, her gaze meeting yours again. "That night...it was more than just a one-night stand to me. It... meant something. But you just disappeared. You completely shut down my texts and the calls. And...it hurt." Her voice was soft and vulnerable, and she couldn't help the hint of pain seeping into her tone. "I thought you regretted it. I thought you-"
“I don’t regret it.” You suddenly said, not even thinking about it or giving it a second thought. You looked up at her, deeply into those beautiful brown eyes. “I didn’t. And I don’t. I kept thinking about it, I
I wanted to accept a date. I really did.” You shrugged as you sighed and looked away for a moment. “I don’t do that. Go to bars and let myself go home with someone I barely know. But that night
I couldn’t help it, and I knew it’d hurt.” You looked back at her and shook your head. “I’m sorry. I guess I wanted to give you the option to run before even telling you what the deal with me was.” You chuckled softly.
Emily couldn't help but let out a soft laugh at your words, her heart swelling in her chest at the honesty in your voice. "Run?" She said, her lips tugging into a small smile. She shook her head. She closed the distance between you and took your hand, her fingers intertwining with yours. "All I’ve been trying to do, is to see you again. I’ve been hoping that you’d say yes. I thought I’d never see you again and
it actually hurt.” She sighed and tilted her head slightly, reaching out with her other hand to stroke your cheek softly. “Let me be the one to decide if I want to run or not. Give me a chance to get to know you
and Harper.” She smiled softly.
Emily bit her lip, her gaze still fixed on yours as she spoke. "Don’t you think it's kind of ironic? We had this incredible night together and... boom. Weeks later, destiny throws us back together. Fate, if you will." She chuckled softly and shook her head gently, her thumb still running over the soft skin of your cheek. "Because I'm not letting you run away now. Not a chance. I know we thought it was just going to be a one-night thing, but..." She paused, her eyes flickering down to your lips. “I don’t want it to be that. Give me a chance.” She said softly as she waited for your answer.
A small shiver ran down your spine, the intensity of her gaze, the way her hand was touching your cheek, felt like electricity. You found yourself speechless as your mind was going a million miles an hour. A part of you still couldn't believe this was actually happening. Here you were, standing in front of her again, the one you were running away from. And now she was asking for a chance
 “Yes
” You whispered softly, smiling softly as you stared into her eyes.
Emily couldn't help the surge of relief that washed over her at your answer, the simple word enough to make her heart soar. Her lips curled into a soft, warm smile as she gently tucked a strand of hair behind your ear before her hand drifted down to rest on the side of your neck, her thumb tracing absentminded patterns on your skin. Her eyes were fixed on yours, filled with a mixture of tenderness and excitement as the weight of the moment washed over her. And without thinking twice, she took a step closer and closed the last remaining gap between them, capturing your lips in a soft kiss.
You wrapped your arms around her neck, keeping her close to you as you kissed her back. Both letting yourselves melt into the kiss, your minds going blissfully blank as they felt their entire body relax. Emily’s other hand snaked around your waist, tugging you closer, as if to erase any distance between them. She savored the feeling of your lips on hers, wanting to just stay in this moment forever. Eventually, the need for air won out, and she reluctantly pulled away, her breaths coming in short, soft puffs. She rested her forehead against yours, her eyes still closed, a soft, happy hum escaping her lips.
You sighed softly, happily resting my forehead against Emily’s as you played with the hairs on the nape of her neck. “I’m sorry. I should’ve told you and saved ourselves from the pain.” You chuckled softly. You looked up into her eyes and sighed softly as you smiled. “I just need some time with Harper. To see where this will go and then be able to talk to her about all of this.”
Emily nodded softly, her expression gentle and understanding as she listened to you. She brushed her nose lightly against yours, a small smile still playing on her lips. "Of course. Whatever you need." She whispered, her gaze lingering on yours for a moment longer before her fingers gently traced along your jawline. "We can take as much time as we need." Her hand cupped your cheek tenderly now, her thumb tracing a soft path over your skin as she spoke softly. "I’m not going anywhere."
The way she was looking at you, the way she was holding you so gently, it was almost dizzying, but it also made you feel safe. Wanted. Accepted. And all the fear and worry you had seemed to melt away under her touch. You leaned in and kissed her lips softly before you pulled away. “Alright
I’m sure they’re waiting for you already.” You smiled softly.
Emily nodded softly, reluctantly letting go of you even though her body desperately wanted to be close to you still. She took a step back, her gaze lingering on your face. A small, soft smiled played at the corners of her lips. She reached out to touch your arm, her fingers giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'll see you soon, though?" She asked, although her tone made it seem more like a plea.
You smiled softly. “How about next week? I’m free on Friday. I can ask JJ if Harper can stay here.” You said softly.
Emily grinned at your words, the thought of seeing you again making her heart flutter in her chest. She nodded eagerly, as a wave of excitement washed over her. Her heart skipped a beat as she responded. "Friday sounds perfect." She replied, her voice laced with anticipation. "Counting down the days already."
Suddenly, the door opened, making both of them turn to find Harper by the door. “Mommy? Thought I heard you!” She smiled softly before she ran to your arms.
You chuckled softly and lifted her up, holding her close to you. “Yes, princess. Just needed to have a little chat with Emily here.”
Harper turned her head to look at Emily and smiled softly. “She’s really nice, mommy. She was making me and Henry laugh.”
Emily watched the moment between you and Harper with a soft fondness in her eyes. She couldn't help the way her heart melted at the sight of Harper in your arms, or the sweet way the little girl talked about her. She smiled warmly at them before turning her attention to Harper, her smile softening even more.
Emily let out a soft chuckle and reached out to brush a stray lock of hair behind Harper's ear. "You're very sweet, sweetheart. I had a lot of fun with you too."
Harper giggled softly and then turned back to look at you. “Can we go? I tired.”
You nodded softly as you smiled. “Yes, love. Did you say thank you to JJ and Will?” Once she nodded, you nodded too and then looked back at the door. “Thank you, JJ. I’ll see you on Monday.” And then you turned to look at Emily. “See you Friday.” You smiled and then made your way to your car.
Emily's heart fluttered at your promise of seeing you again on Friday. She waved her final goodbye to Harper and then watched as you walked to your car. The thought of seeing you in just a few short days filled her with excitement, but the wait already felt unbearable.
“I guess we’re not getting you a date, huh?” Penelope teased as she leaned against the doorframe.
“I’m pretty sure if it was allowed, she’d have abandoned us for her lover.” JJ teased as she laughed.
Emily rolled her eyes lovingly at both of their words, unable to hold back a soft laugh. "Oh, shut it, you two." She said with a playful scoff. She couldn't deny there was truth in their words - she was already craving to see you again. "Friday can't come soon enough, that's for sure."
********************
Time had flown by since that fateful day. Months had gone by, and Emily had been able to spend a lot of that time with you and Harper. It had been an incredible experience, getting to know you better and watching you as a mother. With every moment spent together, Emily had found herself falling deeper in love with you and growing more attached to little Harper. She found herself spending more and more time with the two of you, and the bond they had formed was undeniable.
Today was no exception. Emily had spent the entire day with you and Harper, enjoying the beautiful weather and each other’s company. They had taken a long walk in the park, stopping to watch the birds and feeding the ducks. As the sun began to set, they found themselves in a small clearing, the sky turning a beautiful array of colors as the sun dipped below the horizon. Harper played nearby, trying to catch a few late-season fireflies along with Emily, they were both laughing. Harper kept running to Emily, so she’d catch her and then stayed close to her, not wanting to let her go.
You smiled softly as you watched Harper and Emily, your heart swelling with affection for them. You loved the way Harper gravitated towards her, seemingly drawn to her like a magnet. Every time Harper came running back to her, Emily's arms instinctively wrapped around her, holding her close. You had never seen Harper getting attached to someone so fast. And this confirmed what you already knew
you wanted Emily in your life permanently. Eventually, Harper began to tire, her steps growing slower as sleep overtook her. Emily scooped her up, holding her gently in her arms, her hand smoothing out her hair.
"I think someone's getting sleepy." You said softly as you stood up from the bench and walked to them, smiling softly.
Emily chuckled softly, feeling the weight of Harper in her arms as the child yawned and cuddled against her. She held her close, her hand running through her hair in a soothing manner. She looked over at you with a fond smile, her gaze lingering for a moment before she spoke. "Yeah, looks like it." She said softly, her voice just above a whisper as she didn't want to disturb the sleepy child in her arms.
Harper, as if on cue, yawned again and snuggled even closer to Emily, burying her face in the crook of Emily's neck. Her head nestled comfortably against her shoulder, her little arms wrapping around her neck. Emily couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle at the action, finding it adorable. The way Harper was cuddling up to her...
Emily looked up at you again, a hint of affection and amusement in her eyes. "Guess she's extra clingy today." She teased lightly.
“Especially because she’s with one of her favorite people in the world.” You said softly as you stood beside Emily, smiling as you watched Harper literally falling asleep in her arms and clinging to Emily. You looked back up at her and rubbed her back softly. “I’ll drive.” You said softly as I grabbed the keys from Emily’s back pocket and swatted her butt softly. “You’re on Harper duty.” You chuckled.
Emily let out an indignant squawk as you swatted her butt, shooting you a playful glare. She rolled her eyes but couldn't help the small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as you took the keys. She tightened her grip on Harper, making sure she was secure in her arms. "Oh, I see how it is. I'm on Harper duty, huh?" She quipped, feigning annoyance.
But the truth was, she didn't mind at all. In fact, she loved it. She loved being with Harper and seeing how the little girl clung to her like a koala only solidified that feeling. As you started making your way to the car, Emily followed behind, her steps gentle and careful not to wake up Harper. She let out a content sigh, stealing glances at you as she walked, a warm feeling spreading through her chest. This felt like a family moment, and it made her heart flutter with happiness.
When they reached your car, Emily gently placed Harper in her car seat, maneuvering her carefully so she didn't wake up. Once she was tucked in comfortably, Emily buckled her up and took a moment to look at her. Her heart swelled with affection, and a small smile spread across her face as she watched the little girl sleep peacefully in the back seat. She shut the door softly and then climbed into the passenger's seat, stealing glances at you as she did. There was a certain domesticity to all of this
it felt right.
When you got behind the wheel and started the car, Emily turned towards you. Her gaze lingered on you, her eyes taking in every little detail of your profile. You turned to look at her, and smiled softly as you caught her staring, your brow raising playfully. “What is it?” You chuckled softly, leaning back against the seat as you waited a bit to start driving.
Emily felt a bit embarrassed at being caught staring, her cheeks flushing slightly as you turned to look at her. "Nothing." She replied quickly, averting her gaze as she tried to act cool. But the soft smile tugging at her lips betrayed her, giving her away. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and continued, her voice turning teasing. "Just admiring the driver."
You chuckled, your eyes staying on her for a moment before you looked back on the road, a smirk playing on your lips. “Is that so?" You replied, your tone playful. "I feel like there’s more because you look all dreamy there.” You said softly as you tilted my head.
Emily couldn't help but roll her eyes playfully at your words, although she secretly found it endearing. She crossed her arms, feigning nonchalance, but the corner of her lips still curved into a smile. "Oh please, dreaming? Me? About you? Pfft, you wish." She scoffed softly.. "If anything, I was just thinking about...the weather."
You couldn't help but chuckle at her defiant response, shaking your head softly as you feigned disappointment. "Oh, the weather? Is that it?" You played along, your tone filled with mock disbelief. "Here I was, thinking you were swooning over me, but it turns out you were just thinking about the weather." You joked.
Emily let out a soft laugh, her earlier attempt at nonchalance forgotten as she leaned back into her seat, the atmosphere in the car growing lighter. She shot you an amused glance, her lips curled into a sly smile. She shrugged nonchalantly, playing along with you. "Well, what can I say? Sunny days are pretty swoon-worthy, you know." But then, she kept her gaze fixed on you, a smile spreading across your face. "You’re just so beautiful, I cannot help it. And I just
” She shook her head as she smiled widely. “I love you so much
”
Your heart did a backflip in my chest, your cheeks flushing at her words. Her tone was genuine, filled with affection and tenderness. You reached out and took her hand, lacing your fingers together. "And I love you. A lot."
Emily’s heart skipped a beat as you took her hand in yours, feeling an overwhelming surge of happiness at the simple gesture. The sincerity in your words, the warmth in your eyes
.it made her heart flutter. She couldn't help but squeeze your hand gently, their fingers intertwined. As you diverted your attention back to the road, she felt a wave of affection wash over her, and a warm smiled spread across her face. She leaned back against the seat, her heart full. She let out a sigh, letting the comfortable silence that had fallen between them settle in.
After a while, Emily turned her gaze back towards you, taking in your features as you focused on driving. She couldn't help but notice the way the sunlight filtered through the window, casting a warm glow over your profile. She studied the curve of your jaw, the slight arch of your nose, and the focused look in your eyes.
Emily bit her lip, her gaze softening. "Today was really nice. Harper looked so happy." She spoke softly, her voice filled with affection.
You smiled softly, feeling warm inside at the thought of today. You never thought you’d find someone who would actually love you and Harper. Emily now described Harper as her little bundle of joy, and Harper was the happiest with her. “It truly was nice. And like I told you
Harper is always the happiest when you’re around.” You smiled softly. We parked outside Emily’s building and I sighed softly, turning back to look at her. “It’s always hard to drop you off or for you to leave.” You smiled sadly.
Emily bit her lip softly as she stared at you, her gaze intense. “Maybe it doesn’t have to be that way anymore.” Her voice was quiet as she spoke, but it was loud enough to make your heart drop.
“What do you mean?” You asked equally quietly, as if both of you were scared to wake up Harper.
A smile spread across Emily’s face, tilting her head softly. She looked back at Harper for a moment, the little girl sleeping made her heart swell, her entire body filling with a million butterflies at the thought running through her head. “I want us to be a family.” She admitted. Her gaze returned to yours, soft and filled with affection. “I want us to move in together
and be a family.”
The words left her lips effortlessly, as if they had been on the tip of her tongue for far too long. She waited for your response silently, watching your reaction closely. She hoped with every fiber of her being that you would say yes that her dream of being a family with you and Harper would come true. She held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest as she waited for your reply. When you didn't respond right away, Emily's anxiety started to rise. The silence was agonizing, her heart feeling like it was beating out of her chest.
She chewed on her lower lip, her mind filling with all kinds of things. Suddenly, she felt exposed and vulnerable, and she cursed herself for allowing herself to express her feelings so openly. She fidgeted with her hands, her voice soft and insecure, her cheeks burning red. "I'm sorry... That was... too forward. I..." She trailed off, swallowing hard.
“Yes
” You said quietly as a smile spread across your face. “I want us to be a family. I want
I want Harper to grow up in a happy and healthy environment and
” You sighed softly. “You came into our lives to make us the happiest. To make me the happiest person.”
The relief Emily felt was overwhelming. A wave of happiness rushed through her as your words sank in. Without a second thought, she leaned over the console and pressed a soft, tender kiss on your lips. She pulled away, only to press her forehead against yours, her hand gently resting on your cheek.
Emily took a shaky breath before whispering softly, her voice filled with love and affection. "I'm the happiest I've ever been because of you. Both of you." She stayed close like that for a moment, just relishing the feeling of having you so close, her thumb gently tracing circles on your cheek. She closed her eyes, a soft sigh escaping her lips before pulling back to look at you. "I want to spend the rest of my life making you and Harper happy." She said, her voice filled with conviction. Then, a smirk slowly spread across her lips. "And who knows? Maybe a sibling for Harper one day." She teased, her eyes sparkling.
Your eyes widened slightly and a faint blush dusted across your cheeks. You chuckled softly as you tried to hide the redness of your face. “We haven’t even moved in and you’re already thinking about more kids?”
But truth was
you wanted that. Badly.
Emily snickered at your reaction, her smirk growing wider. She knew she had gotten to you. She reached out to take your hand again, intertwining their fingers together as she spoke in a playful tone. "What can I say? I guess I've got baby fever." She joked, her gaze lingering on you. Then, she got serious again, her eyes locking onto yours as she spoke softly. "Besides, I've always wanted a big family."
You smiled widely at her words, leaning in and pecking her lips softly, not being able to contain your happiness. “I’d definitely love that.” You chuckled softly as you reached up and stroked her cheek softly. “So
should we go to my place right now? I don’t want you to stay here tonight, I want you with me.”
Emily leaned into your touch, a soft smile spreading across her face at your words. She felt a flutter in her heart at the thought of staying over at your place, and she nodded eagerly. "Yes, please." She replied almost immediately, her voice filled with hope and eagerness. She squeezed your hand gently, her gaze locked with yours. "Let's go." She said softly, her voice filled with excitement.
(2 years later.)
Penelope and Spencer were running around with Henry and Harper, playing with some bubbles that Penelope had bought for the kids. It was a beautiful sunny Saturday, Rossi had gathered everyone around to have a nice day with the team and respective families. The kids were running around in circles, trying to catch the colorful bubbles as they popped.
You chuckled softly as Emily helped you sit down, looking up at her and playfully speaking. “My bump might be big, but I can still sit down in my own, baby.” You chuckled.
Emily laughed softly as she helped you into the chair, rolling her eyes playfully at your words. "Oh, I know you can, love. But I just want to spoil you." She smiled and placed her hand on your stomach, gently rubbing it through the fabric of your shirt. "Besides, I have to take every opportunity to touch this little blessing." Her smile only widened as she felt the baby kicked softly beneath her palm. She chuckled softly, kneeling down and pressing a soft kiss against your barely visible bump. "I think baby likes me." She said in an almost whisper, her hand still gently massaging your stomach.
“Well, of course they do. They can feel that it’s their mama’s presence.” You smiled warmly, loving whenever Emily kissed my bump or gently caressed it.
After a whole year of trying, you had finally been able to get pregnant. You had been fighting this battle alone since you both didn’t want to get everyone excited and then be disappointed. Especially Harper. But once you were sure that you were pregnant, Harper was the happiest to know she was getting a little sibling.
JJ sat down at the table with you and Emily, smiling softly as she looked at your baby bump. “When are we finally gonna find out what you’re having?”
Emily couldn't help but grin at JJ's question, her hand still gently resting on your stomach. She looked at you with a playful glimmer in her eyes, excitement coursing through her. "Oh, come on, you know we decided to keep it a surprise." Emily replied, her voice filled with anticipation. "It's more fun this way." She gave your bump another soft, loving rub.
Meanwhile, Harper and Henry had run off a distance from the picnic table, their attention captured by a butterfly in the air. The two children were chasing after the colorful insect, their giggles filling the air. As the butterfly fluttered away, Harper and Henry finally stopped running, panting softly as they tried to catch their breath. Harper turned towards Henry, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Did you see that?" She asked, her voice breathless. She then ran to both of you, jumping into Emily’s arms. “Mama! Did you see that?!”
Emily laughed softly at Harper's excitement, her arms immediately wrapping around the little girl. "I sure did, sweetie. That butterfly was beautiful." She replied, her tone warm and loving. "Did you have fun chasing it?"
Harper snuggled into Emily's arms, her little head resting against her chest. She nodded eagerly, her eyes still sparkling with delight. "Yeah! It was so pretty. I wanted to catch it, but it flew too fast." She pouted slightly, her lower lip sticking out.
“Ugh, I cannot wait to have a little Emily running around. Can you imagine how cute that’d be?! We already have a little y/n running around, a little JJ, and now imagine a little Emily?!” Penelope said with excitement, clapping happily.
“Auntie P, my baby brother does look like mama.” Harper surely said, which gained the attention of everyone around them.
You looked up at Harper and tilted your head. “What do you mean, princess?”
Everyone around the picnic table chuckled softly at Harper's declaration, and Emily felt her heart swell at the words. She looked at Harper with an amused expression, raising an eyebrow curiously. "Oh really? And what makes you say that?"
The rest of the team also seemed intrigued by Harper's statement, their smiles turning into amused grins as they waited for an explanation.
“Cause I had a dream, mommy!” Harper smiled widely. “There was you, and mama, and auntie P, and auntie JJ, and uncle Spence, and uncle Morgan, and uncle Dave, and uncle Hotch! And mama was holdin’ me while mommy was holding my baby brother!” She explained happily.
You couldn’t help but let your eyes water as you looked up at Emily and then back at Harper, reaching up to stroke her little leg. “Really, princess?”
The team members all listened intently to Harper's words, their expressions softening at the adorable image she painted in their minds.
Emily's heart melted as she looked between Harper and you, a mix of surprise and emotions washing over her. She couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the innocence of Harper's dream, and a wave of hope filled her heart. She looked back at Harper, her eyes glimmering with unshed tears. "Is that so, sweetheart?" She asked softly.
Harper nodded eagerly, her eyes wide with innocence. "Yes, mama! That's what I saw."
The team chuckled softly, touched by the sweetness of Harper's dream.
Spencer then spoke, a smile on his face as he explained his fact. “You know it could symbolize a few things, including a connection with the unborn sibling, a reflection of the mother's feelings about the pregnancy, or a representation of new beginnings and potential within the dreamer themselves. And-“
“Or
it could just mean that Harpy would like a baby brother. Right, Harpy?” JJ chuckled softly.
The team chuckled at Spencer's analysis, finding humor in his detailed explanation. JJ's remark was a light-hearted addition, teasingly suggesting that Harper's dream could be just a simple desire for a little sibling.
Emily couldn't help but smile at Spencer's analysis. She turned to Harper and ruffled her hair affectionately. "Your uncle Spence has a point, sweetheart. Dreams can mean many things."
Harper tilted her head, listening intently to the team's explanations. “But mama! It felt so real! I know it’ll be a boy!”
“Well, just a few more months and we’ll find out, sweetheart. Your dream was really beautiful.” You said softly, smiling up at Harper.
The kids then returned to play once Rossi told them to enjoy a little more of the bubbles before it was time to eat.
“You know
” You spoke once Emily sat down beside you and held your hand on her lap. “I don’t know, I think Harper could be onto something.” I smiled softly.
Emily chuckled softly at your words, the thought of having a little boy making her heart flutter. "Well, if anyone can predict the future, it might just be our little Harper." She replied, her hand gently resting on your stomach. She looked at you with a teasing glint in her eyes. "You really think she might be right about it being a boy?"
“I mean
” You shrugged. “When I was pregnant with Harper, everyone kept telling me it was a boy. I believed them, until the last week. That night, I had a dream where I sat on the floor in a room, and in front of me, there was a little girl. She kept calling me mommy.” I smiled softly. “A week later, Harper was born.”
Emily listened intently to your story, her heart swelling with warmth and affection. She couldn't help but let out a soft laugh, shaking her head in wonder. "It seems like dreams have a way of speaking the truth. And if Harper's dream is as right as yours was, then we might just have a little prince on the way."
The team around you all smiled and chuckled at your conversation. Rossi, being the father figure he was, couldn't help but chime in. "You know, I've always believed in the power of intuition and dreams."
Morgan, as playful as ever, raised an eyebrow. "You're getting all spiritual, old man. Next, you'll be telling us you can read tea leaves too."
Rossi shot him a playful glare but then chuckled softly. "Hey, don't underestimate the wisdom of an old man." He replied, pretending to be offended.
Hotch, ever the deadpan one, couldn't help but roll his eyes. "Tea leaves, fortune cookies, tarot cards...it's like a one-stop shop for questionable life advice."
The team laughed at Hotch's dry humor, knowing he wasn't one to take things like dream interpretation very seriously.
Emily couldn't help but chime in, taking Hotch's side. "He's not wrong. Those things are more for entertainment than actual guidance."
JJ, always the voice of reason, shook her head. "Come on, guys. Can't we just let them enjoy the mystery? I think it's sweet that Harper had this dream."
“Yeah. Besides, whatever it is, we’ll love them just as much.” You said softly as you smiled at Emily. “Though, a little Emily, either boy or girl, would be lovely.” You grinned as you leaned in and pecked her lips.
Emily chuckled softly at the thought, a warm glow in her eyes. "You know, the thought of having a little Emily running around sounds pretty delightful." She teased playfully, her hand gently touching your stomach. "But either way, boy or girl, we're going to be absolutely smitten with this little one." She whispered, her voice filled with affection.

rewatching criminal minds (for like the 12th time) and it still haunts me the fact that they made us believe Emily would be a mom at some point, giving us a cute scene with JJ (they could’ve been a family), making Emily picture herself with kids and then
she never had them.
none.
she never had the real thing.

When Hotch announced that there would be a new agent joining the team, it was no surprise that they were curious of who it could be. Maybe an old agent that worked with Hotch before, or maybe someone who knew Rossi, maybe a new ‘baby’ agent as they liked to call them, maybe someone who had been recommended. For the rest of the day, they all had been talking about it and trying to figure out who it could be; Penelope got her skills working, trying to see if there was anything about this new agent on the system already, but so far, nothing. So, on Monday, when a beautiful, young girl walked to Hotch’s office, all eyes were on her. To say the least, they were all surprised that the chosen one had been a ‘baby’ agent; soon enough, Penelope had her file shown to everyone before Hotch could walk in and introduce her.
It was no surprise that everyone found the new girl beautiful, interesting by the way she looked so serious and quiet, but there was something that changed in Emily that day. Since the moment she laid her eyes on the new recruit, she had gone completely silent, her eyes locked in the girl. Everyone around her kept talking about her, making assumptions, or just commenting on how beautiful she was, but Emily? She didn’t say a thing. She just kept her eyes on her, which
was creepy, if Emily thought about it. She didn’t mean to do that, she didn’t mean to keep staring, but it was impossible not to. Soon enough, y/n got along with the whole team, she has started to join them for drinks, she went out to lunch with them, Penelope had even dragged her to their girl's night and had announced that y/n was now the new member. Y/n couldn’t have been happier with the fact that they all were making her feel like she really belonged with them.
It wasn’t too long after Emily started noticing her behavior around y/n, the way she acted, the way her voice changed, the way she smiled even more than usual, there were so many little things that she started to notice and that she hoped that no one else would. And that’s when it clicked; she had a crush. She has not had a crush in years. Years. She had focused on her job, she had said that she didn’t have time to date or even go around meeting people, and the thought of one-night stands
they were a big no. But y/n had completely changed that, she liked her, she liked being around her, she loved to see her smiling, she loved to hear her laugh, she loved to see how well she got along with everyone, she loved the way she dressed, the way she talked, the way she walked
yeah. It was definitely a crush.
Emily sat on her desk and was focused on the file she had right in front of her, but the moment she heard y/n’s laugh, she couldn’t help but look her way and smile at how cute she looked. She didn’t know what stupid thing Spencer and Morgan were saying, but the fact that she was laughing and smiling, made Emily feel warm inside. She didn’t notice that JJ and Penelope were right behind her, quietly laughing as they stared at Emily for a while. JJ leaned down to whisper in Emily’s ear, trying to hold back her laugh.
“Like what you see, Prentiss?” JJ whispered softly, making Emily almost jump from her seat.
“Jesus, JJ!” Emily looked back at Penelope and JJ laughing hysterically at her reaction, making Emily groan. “Why would you scare me like that?”
“Oh, you were just very distracted and well
we didn’t want to interrupt.” JJ teased as Penelope kept laughing beside her.
Emily shook her head and then shrugged. “You were not interrupting anything.”
“Oh, so you were not just staring at Carter over there? Cause I wear glasses, m’lady, and I am pretty sure you were just smiling and admiring her from afar.” Penelope teased as she leaned over Emily’s desk, mocking the position Emily had been in while staring at y/n.
Emily rolled her eyes as she scoffed. “Yeah, whatever.”
“C’mon, Em! We know you have it bad for our girl over there. We don’t blame you.” JJ grinned softly as she crossed her arms.
Emily turned her chair and tried to go back to her file. “Don’t know what y’all are talking about.”
Penelope looked at JJ with a smirk on her face. “Denial is the first step.”
JJ chuckled softly as she nodded. “Oh, yes. Let’s see how long she stays in there.”
Emily could feel her cheeks getting warm as she heard her friends, unable to deny it because they were entirely right, and they knew it. This couldn’t be good, because now that they had figured it out, there was no way in hell that they would stop teasing Emily, so now she had to prepare mentally for the torture into which she had just walked.
“Earth to Emily!”
Emily snapped out of her trance and looked up to find y/n leaning over her desk. “Oh, hi! I’m sorry. Did you say something?”
Y/n chuckled softly as she nodded. “I was saying thank you for the coffee this morning, and for the muffin. It so happened to be my favorite actually.” She grinned softly as she stared at Emily.
Emily smiled widely as she nodded. “It so happens to be my favorite too, so I’m glad I got the right one.”
“You have good taste, Prentiss.” Y/n grinned as she stood up. “Next coffee is on me.” She squeezed Emily’s shoulder before she walked away.
Penelope scoffed as she looked at Emily. “You’ve never brought me muffins!”
“That’s because she has a crush, of course she’d buy her a muffin too.” JJ smirked as she walked away.
Emily chuckled softly as she nodded. “Can’t deny it.”
“Knew it!” Penelope whispered/yelled, making Emily blush more. “You’re so soft around her. It’s cute.”
“I am not soft.” Emily raised her brow as she looked at Penelope.
“Oh, you definitely are, Em. Soft Emily! Adorable.” Penelope pinched Emily’s cheek and then walked away.
********************
If there was once place that most of them hated to go to, was Florida. There were many reasons why they didn’t actually like to be there, of course their main focus was to help people and solve the case, but the fact that there was an actual heatwave and there were some psycho out there murdering people in the middle of it, was annoying and frustrating. The moment they landed, they all literally almost stripped out of their clothes as soon as they walked out of the jet. The sun was their biggest enemy at the moment, if they were pissed about the case, now with the heatwave, they were done. Luckily, the precinct they had to go to had air conditioning, and it was nice to stay there, but the fact that Hotch had to send them to different locations got the whole team in a mood. Reid and Rossi were sent to the morgue, while Morgan, Emily and y/n were sent to the last crime scene.
“I swear, I’m about to strip down and give two shits about who sees me.” Morgan says as she got out of the car, slamming the door.
“Yeah, I don’t think it’d be a good picture to keep in my mind, so thank you but no.” Emily shook her head as she followed Morgan, almost rolling her eyes.
“C’mon, Prentiss. You’re gonna tell me you don’t wanna see some of this?” Morgan smirked as he raised his shirt to show his abs.
Y/n rolled her eyes as she pulled his shirt down. “The heat is annoying as it is, please don’t add to the annoyance. We’ve got enough.” She said in a playful tone as she kept walking.
“Carter, baby, you’d love to see what’s underneath all this.” Morgan raised his brows as he wrapped his arm around y/n’s shoulders as they walked.
“In your wildest dreams, my man. But I don’t play for that team.” Y/n grinned as she pushed him away. “And please, do not get near me again, I like you, but right now I do not need sweat from someone else.” She raised her brows playfully and got her gloves out of her back pocket, walking to the crime scene.
“This girl is something else, isn’t she?” Morgan smirked as he stood beside Emily, turning to look at her for a moment.
Emily cleared her throat as she nodded. “Definitely.” She then looked at Morgan who was already staring at her with a smirk on his face. “What?”
Morgan raised his brows. “You like her, don’t you?”
“Oh, my
” Emily sighed loudly as she covered her face. She then looked back at Morgan and raised her hands. “Is it that obvious or what?”
“Nah. The thought just slipped my mind just now, but you just confirmed it.” Morgan winked as he followed y/n.
Emily groaned and shook her head as she followed them. Not only was it embarrassing that JJ and Penelope teased her about it every possible chance they had, but now Morgan wouldn’t drop it either and she was sure that her soon join the girls. But could he actually blame her? Y/n had talked on the jet how she had prepared herself for the weather and soon enough she’d get rid of her blazer, but Emily hadn’t expected anything more than y/n having a comfortable shirt or blouse underneath, but when she did take the blazer off, not only was a sleeveless shirt but the shirt hugged her figure perfectly, and that’s when Emily stared at her arms, fascinated by how strong she looked, and suddenly she felt like a perv, imagining things that she could only talk with herself.
It was no better once they headed back to the precinct. In their way back, Emily looked at the backseat to tell y/n something about the case and that’s when she noticed y/n had put her hair back in a ponytail which gave Emily a better look on her beautiful face. Emily turned back so fast to try to hide the redness on her face. Morgan of course noticed this but didn’t say a thing as he kept driving. Once in the precinct, Emily tried her best to focus on the case, directly staring at Hotch and at the board, but she couldn’t help but stare at y/n every now and then, and at times, she caught y/n looking back at her, which caught her off guard.
The next day was no different, having to go to different places to find evidence or witness made it hard to stay sane. The weather seemed to be getting worse or maybe it was just them that couldn’t deal with the heat. All day, Emily and y/n had been working apart, so Emily had a chance to focus more on the case and keep y/n away from her mind. Once Rossi and Emily were back in the precinct, Emily was going through some files when she felt a hand on her back, sending a shiver down her spine.
Y/n smiled softly as she sat beside Emily. “Hey you.”
“Oh, you’re back.” Emily smiled as she turned her chair to get a better look of y/n.
“Yep, and I come bearing gifts.” Y/n placed an iced coffee in front of her, along with a muffin. “Found our favorite in a local coffee shop.”
Emily smiled softly as she grabbed the muffin. “How did you know I was hungry?” She raised a playful brow as she looked at y/n, grabbing a piece and then offering the muffin to y/n.
“With this heat, everyone is either thirsty, hungry or both. I know I am.” Y/n chuckled as she grabbed a piece of the muffin. “How’s the reading?”
Emily took a sip of her coffee and sighed. “I feel like I’m crossing words now. The AC here is great but I’m going crazy with this heat.”
“Tell me about it. I’m used to the heat, but this is something else.” Y/n leaned back in her chair.
“Yeah, me too.” Emily nodded as she kept eating and drinking her coffee.
Y/n smiled softly as she stared at Emily. “I don’t think I’ve seen you this long with a ponytail. I like it.”
Emily turned back to look at y/n, a faint blush on her cheeks. “Well
it’s my Florida style for the next few days.”
“Hope I get to see it more back home and not only in the field.” Y/n grinned softly as she grabbed her own coffee.
“And what about you? Will I get to see you in a ponytail more often?” Emily grinned back, biting the straw of her coffee.
For the first time, Emily caught a blush on y/n’a cheeks, making her grin grow wider. Y/n cleared her throat as she looked away. “Well
I uh
my hair has been growing so maybe you will.”
“Good, hope so.” Emily grinned as she returned to read the file.
Y/n cleared her throat softly as she grabbed a file and started reading it, completely missing the way Emily looked back at her with a grin on her face. Y/n was not sure if she was sweating because of the heat, or she was sweating because of Emily’s comment and stare. She had been trying to act bold and flirty this whole time, but Emily had finally made her go back to feeling all giddy and shy. She had tried her best to be the one getting Emily to smile and her cheeks to go all red, she was still not sure if Emily just liked the compliments and the way y/n acted or it was for another reason
but in her case, Emily was driving her insane. More now with that beautiful red top that she was wearing today, the way she could see her cleavage
stop right there before you go somewhere you can’t go back from. Y/n shook her head and tried to focus back on the file. Emily would be the death of her.
********************
Y/n groaned softly as she walked into the precinct, throwing her head back as she JJ laughed. She looked back at her and raised her brow. “What you laughing at?”
“You seriously hate heat this much?” JJ laughed.
“Are you kidding me, JJ? I’m seriously considering taking Morgan’s idea and strip down. But thank God for AC.” Y/n smiled softly but then stopped in her tracks as she stood by the door of the conference room, her cheeks suddenly growing even more red.
JJ raised her brow at the reaction and then looked back into the conference, noticing that Emily was standing up and putting some things away. She returned her stare to y/n and grinned. “All good, Carter?”
Y/n swallowed as her eyes widened slightly. “I
uh
”
If the top yesterday had driven her crazy, todays had definitely taken her to heaven and back to earth. Emily was wearing a sleeveless, red shirt that hugged her figure just perfectly, and with the pants that she was wearing plus her hair in a ponytail? Yeah, she was definitely going to lose it right here and right now. She then noticed she had stared for longer than expected and JJ was still by her side.
Y/n looked at JJ and chuckled softly. “I uh
I forgot something at the car.”
“I thought you didn’t want to go back to that hell. And we’re about to leave.” JJ grinned playfully.
“Forgot my phone. Be right back!” Y/n said before she was walking as fast as she could.
Emily looked up to find JJ laughing, making her furrow her brows. “What’s up?”
JJ shook her head as she still laughed. “Nothing, nothing. Need help?”
Emily decided to leave it and they all finished gathering their stuff. They had already prepared everything to go back home, but the jet ended up having some issues which made them have to book another hotel, which ended up being a disaster because they had to share rooms since the hotel was almost completely booked. JJ was quick to ask for a room alone, while Morgan had picked Spencer and Rossi said he’d only share with Hotch, which ended up leaving Emily and y/n on their own. Y/n stared at JJ for a moment, a playful smile on JJ’s face and while y/n was confused, Emily couldn’t help but give JJ a deadly stare, knowing perfectly what she had just done.
Both women headed to their room, not saying a word. Y/n had tried her best not to stare at Emily, trying her best to keep her mind clear of thoughts and to stay as sane as possible, while Emily couldn’t keep her eyes away from y/n, wondering if she had said or done something that made y/n go completely quiet. They walked into the room and y/n went straight to the AC remote, trying to turn it on only to find that it was not working.
“No, you gotta be kidding me!” Y/n groaned as she threw the remote to the bed.
“Oh
no. Is it not working?” Emily sighed as she threw her bag to the floor. “This is great, and I’m sure they don’t have any more rooms available.”
“Guess we’ll have to die in here.” Y/n chuckled as she turned back to look at Emily who was getting rid of her pants, making y/n’s heart stop. “What
w-what are you doing?”
Emily looked up at y/n and shrugged. “I am not about to keep sweating on this pants. Do you mind?”
Y/n swallowed as her eyes darted down to Emily’s legs, noticing the red underwear that she was wearing. Shit. “Uh
n-no. I mean
you’re right. I’ll
I’ll try to call the reception.” She dropped her bag and went to sit on the bed, grabbing the phone from the nightstand.
Emily raised her brow as she walked to the bed where y/n was now sitting, placing her folded pants on the bed, and walking to stand right in front of y/n. “Y/n?” She placed her finger under y/n’s chin to make her look up, grinning softly. “Are you okay?”
Y/n swore her heart stopped right in that moment as Emily stood right in front of her; half naked. “I
you just
I
” she sighed. “I’m a mess.” She chuckled softly.
“The heatwave effect I guess.” Emily chuckled back.
“More like the Emily in red effect.” Y/n mumbled as she looked back at the phone, putting it back.
Emily furrowed her brows as she stared at y/n. “What did you say?”
Y/n knew it was now or never, so might as well be right in this moment. She looked up at Emily. “Did you know that red is definitely your color?”
Emily blushed as a small smile appeared on her face. “You
you think so?”
“Em, have you seen yourself in the mirror You’re
fuck
you’re gorgeous. I mean you’re gorgeous in everything but like
in red? Wow.” Y/n exhaled as she stood up, trying to get more courage to speak.
“You really think that way about me?” Emily grinned softly.
“Have I not been obvious? Because honestly
I feel like I’ve made a fool of myself whenever I’m around you.” Y/n chuckled softly as she tilted her head.
Emily laughed softly as she shook her head. “Are you serious? They’ve been mocking me and making fun of me saying that I get all flustered and soft around you, and only you. Have I not been obvious?”
Y/n smiled widely as she stared into beautiful brown eyes. “I
guess I had an idea, but I was not sure.”
Emily tilted her head as she smiled. “Well, your idea is very right. I
I like you.” She shrugged. “And these last few days
you’ve been driving me insane.”
“I have been driving you insane?” Y/n huffed a chuckle. “I couldn’t think whenever I stared at you.”
Emily laughed again. “So, I guess we drive each other insane.”
Y/n nodded as she laughed slightly. “Seems so.”
Emily bit her lip softly as she stepped closer to y/n, placing her hands on y/n’s neck, one of her hands playing with her ponytail. “And
should we do something about it?”
Y/n grinned as she placed her hands on Emily’s waist, pulling her against her own body. “How does a date sound? When we’re back. I’d like to take you out.”
Emily smiled, feeling the butterflies in the pit of her stomach. “I’d love that.”
Y/n smiled softly as she leaned in, but before their lips could meet, the power suddenly went out, leaving both women in the darkness, the only light came from the moon outside of the window.
“Fucking hell!” Rossi yelled, making both women laugh.
“Guess we’ll have to camp outside.” Y/n chuckled softly as she looked at Emily.
Emily shrugged. “We can meet them in a bit, we were about to do something.”
Both women smiled before they closed the gap between them, their lips pressing against each other’s in a soft, tender kiss. The heat, the sweat and the darkness completely forgotten as their lips moved in perfect sync.

Part 1.
Tumblr media
*not my gif*
Seven months. It had been exactly seven months since Emily had passed away, and there was not a day where y/n didn’t think about her or missed her. Hotch had offered a whole month of vacation, so she could take her time to process things and to be able to clear her mind, but she had only taken two weeks, and in those two weeks, she had gone with Garcia and Morgan to clean Emily’s apartment and take everything back to her apartment. Y/n had tried her best to remain calm and show everyone that she was okay, but deep inside she knew the struggle she had. It wasn’t every single day that they spent the night at each other’s apartments, at times, it happened that they were able to spend the night together, other times they were away and sometimes they were not lucky enough to end up in the same room together, but in all of these months, y/n had a hard time sleeping to the point where she had to take sleeping pills to be able to help herself.
Hotch had made the call for her to see a therapist, Hotch had already talked to everyone in the team by Strauss’ orders, and when Hotch mentioned seeing a professional, y/n didn’t argue back, she just agreed. She knew she needed it, she knew she needed someone to talk to, the team had seen enough of her weakness, and she wanted everyone to think that she was okay, and she had started to move on. Y/n had made Hotch promise that it would stay between them that she had gone to a professional, and he had agreed, which y/n had noticed that he had only agreed because he knew that this whole thing with Emily had been a hard thing for her, but well, she would accept it as long as he wasn’t on her back every day, she’d accept anything. Spencer had been the one who had spent most of his time with y/n and JJ, even y/n had gone with Spencer to JJ’s house, and to be honest, Henry was one of the reasons y/n kept smiling too, they had become so close that y/n couldn’t help but want to be there every single day.
It was no lie that she had her bad and good days, more bad than good, but she wouldn’t admit that. At times she didn’t even know if she should be truthful to her therapist and just pretend like she was having a good day just so she could discharge her and things could slowly go back to normal, but she also couldn’t deny that talking to someone about this whole thing helped her more than anything. But today specially, it had been a really bad day. After getting back from a case, y/n found herself going back to her apartment, it was early in the morning, perfect timing to take a shower and go to bed to sleep all day. But as she got out of the shower, she got a notification on her phone, a reminder that today, they had planned a trip. She had planned a trip with Emily for her birthday. And she was now gone. Her birthday was tomorrow.
Her eyes got teary as she remembered the joy in Emily’s voice as y/n mentioned a trip with her for her birthday. They were supposed to go on a trip too for her birthday, but she had spent all day at JJ’s house with the rest of the team. And today, she was supposed to go on that trip with Emily, and by tomorrow, they’d already be at their destination, just having a day for them. She threw her phone on the bed and started sobbing uncontrollably, feeling her chest tightening as she dropped to the floor. Why did this happen? Why it had to be Emily? Why couldn’t she get there sooner? All the questions returned to her mind as she sobbed, wrapping her arms around her legs, holding them closer to her chest. She didn’t know how long she stayed there, but next thing she knew, she felt arms wrapping around her, startling her for a moment before she heard the soothing voice against her ear.
“You’re okay, I’m here.” JJ whispered softly as she held y/n tighter.
Y/n sobbed quietly as she turned in JJ’s arms and buried her face in the crook of her neck. “JJ
” she whispered softly as small sobs left her lips.
“I got you.” JJ said in a whisper as she kissed her head.
They stayed like that for a while, until at some point y/n started shivering noticing that she was still in just a towel and her hair was still dripping. Y/n sniffled as she pulled away slowly from JJ, looking up at her. “I should uh
I should get dressed.” She chuckled softly.
JJ nodded softly as she offered a smile, helping y/n stand up from the floor. “I’ll be in the kitchen. Coffee?”
Y/n nodded softly as she smiled. “You can look around, I’ll be out soon.”
JJ nodded again as she walked out of the room. Y/n sighed softly as she went ahead to get ready. JJ had been the only person who had seen y/n break like this. She had been the one checking on her daily, not leaving her side. Not that the rest of the team didn’t check on her, it had also been really hard for Spencer to process, so he had also spent most of his time with y/n. Y/n sighed softly as she finished brushing her hair and walked out of her room to meet JJ, who had already put some waffles in the toaster and was now doing some bacon. Y/n smiled softly as she sat on one of the stools as she looked at JJ.
“Why would you come here when we just got back from a case?” Y/n smiled.
JJ chuckled as she turned to put the bacon on a plate and shrugged. “Henry is at my mom’s, Will left for work before I even got home. Thought you could use some company.” She smiled as she looked at y/n. “And I also kind of needed it.” She went to grab the coffee, placing it in front of y/n.
Y/n tilted her head. “It’s been 7 months, JJ.”
“And I found you sobbing on the floor.” JJ raised her brow as she went for the waffles.
“It’s a bad day, you know I have those.”
“And I’m here for the bad days too. You don’t have to hide from me like you hide from the others.” JJ walked around the kitchen island and placed a plate in front of y/n, sitting down next to her.
Y/n sighed as she looked at the food in front of her. “Tomorrow is her birthday, you know?”
JJ nodded. “I know. Spencer wants to buy a cake for him and for Emily.”
Y/n shook her head. “I cannot imagine how hard this is for Spencer.” She said softly as she picked up her mug.
“Just as hard as it is for you.” JJ smiled softly as she placed her hand on y/n’s free hand. “We’ll go together. The whole team already signed up for it.” She grinned a little.
Y/n chuckled softly as she nodded. “Of course they did. What would I do without you guys?” She grinned as she turned to look at JJ. “Thank you. Seriously. You don’t have to do all of this, and yet, you’re the one who’s always here with me and for me. And I will always be thankful.”
“It’s nothing really. I love you, and I’ll always be here.” JJ smiled as she leaned in to kiss her head. “Now, let’s eat so we take a much needed nap, I’m exhausted. And yes, I plan on spending my day here with you.” She grinned softly.
Y/n chuckled softly as she nodded, rolling her eyes playfully. “Alright.”
********************
“So
” Y/n closed the door of Morgan’s office behind her and looked at both Morgan and Garcia. “What do you know so far?”
Morgan and Garcia stared at each other for a moment before Garcia looked back at y/n. “Uh
about what?”
Y/n tilted her head as she raised her brow. “Maybe the rest of the team wanna pretend that you guys are not doing anything, but I know you two.” She sighed. “So
you’re looking for Declan, aren’t you?”
Morgan sighed as he dropped the file he had in his hand and nodded. “We found him.”
Y/n’s heart stopped for a moment as she stared at Morgan. “Is he
is he okay?”
Morgan nodded as he offered a smile. “Emily made sure he was okay and had a good life. He’s in a good school, living with the person he grew up with.”
“But?”
Morgan sighed. “We know that’s not gonna last forever. Doyle could find him sooner or later.”
“So now the mission is to find him?”
Morgan nodded. “Yes.”
“And you’ll let me help you.”
“Y/n
” Garcia said softly.
“I will help.” Y/n snapped as she stared at them. “Yes, I wanna kill Doyle. If I see him I
” she nibbled on her lip as she took a deep breath. “I don’t know what I’d do if I see him face to face. But all I know
is that I want Declan to be safe. Emily worked hard to keep him safe.”
Morgan nodded. “Okay. But you gotta keep up with us, no games, Carter.”
Y/n grinned softly. “You got it, boss.”
Y/n knew maybe this wasn’t the greatest idea, she knew she has been thinking about this too much but never got the guts to do anything about it, and now that Morgan was a step ahead of her, she wanted to do this right. Not only was she at risk of losing her job if something went wrong, but she also didn’t know what she’d be capable of if she had Ian Doyle right in front of her. But so it went like that for around two months. Between Morgan and y/n, they’d go to Declan’s school to check on him and make sure he was safe. At times, y/n sat there in her car and stared at him, getting to see a bit of the kid he was and smiled at the thought of Emily doing anything and everything for him to be safe. That was Emily. That’s what she always admired from Emily, the dedication and empathy she had for the victims.
And then one day, it brought the memory of a conversation she had with Emily on a random rainy day at Emily’s apartment. They had been watching a movie, cuddling on the couch when all of a sudden, the power went off and they were left in the darkness. They both gathered all the candles that Emily had, and they stay cuddling on the couch, engaging in random conversations to keep each other busy.
“You know what JJ said?” Emily smiled softly as she ran her fingers through y/n’s hair. “She said that she saw me with kids
and the thought crossed my mind for a moment but
” she shrugged. “I don’t think so.” She chuckled.
Y/n sat up and sat down in front of Emily, smiling softly. “Why not?”
Emily’s brows furrowed slightly as she stared at her. “What? You
” she tilted her head. “
you’d consider it?”
“Kids?” Y/n smiled. “With you?” She shrugged. “Yes.” She nodded softly. “I mean
I’ve always liked kids and
I always imagined myself with kids. But the job
it just didn’t fit at the time.”
“But you’re willing to try?” Emily raised her brow curiously, waiting for her answer.
Y/n stared at her and smiled softly as she nodded. “JJ is right. I see you with kids and
” she shrugged. “I’d be lying to say that I haven’t thought about it.” She scrunched her nose and shook her head. “Too soon, right?”
Emily chuckled softly as she moved closer to y/n, placing her hands on y/n’s hips and pulling her into her lap, making y/n wrap her legs and arms around Emily’s waist and neck. “No
not too soon. Cause I’ve thought about it too.” She smiled softly.
Y/n’s smile widened as she leaned in and kissed Emily’s nose softly. “A little Emily wouldn’t be too bad
” She grinned.
“What if it’s a boy?” Emily raised her brow as she grinned. “Carter is a good name.”
Y/n furrowed her brows. “That’s my last name.”
“We could change it.” Emily bit her lip as she tried to hide her smirk.
Y/n’s heart stopped for a second as she stared at Emily, a silly smile appearing on her face. “Are you already proposing to me, Prentiss?”
Emily shrugged. “Just a thought.” She smiled. “Y/n Prentiss
sounds perfect to me.”
Y/n tilted her head and chuckled softly, leaning in to kiss her lips softly. “It does.”
Y/n’s eyes filled with tears at the memory, but she pushed it away as she leaned back in her seat and noticed recess was done so he was going back inside. And so it went on like that for a while. But then everything changed when they figured out that Doyle was back and he knew where Declan was, which made things more complicated now in a way. It seemed like this whole thing was not really over yet.
********************
“Y/n, Morgan is going to take care of it.” JJ said as she followed y/n.
Y/n shook her head. “He already tried, and he said nothing. I’ll go in there and get it out of him.” She said while she rapidly walked to the interrogation room.
JJ sighed and grabbed y/n by the arm, stopping her. “Hey!” She looked into her eyes and shook her head. “Maybe this is not a good idea.”
Y/n scoffed. “Why? Because he killed the love of my life so all of you think that I’ll kill him? I know better than to do that, Jennifer. Our priority is finding Declan, whatever happens to Doyle, is the least important thing on my list.” She snapped as she went back to walking.
Y/n knew JJ was right, it wasn’t a good idea for y/n to go in there with Doyle, but they needed to find Declan sooner or later, and it was hard to believe that he really didn’t know where he was when they perfectly knew that they had seen him already, so no
she didn’t buy it. She walked into the interrogation room, her blood boiling as he stared back at her.
“Agent.” Doyle nodded his head as he stared at her.
Y/n took a deep breath as she stood leaning on the door, her arms crossed. “Where is he, Doyle?”
Doyle shrugged. “I already told the other agent. I have no idea.”
Y/n scoffed. “And you think I’ll buy it? We have footage of you driving by the house where he was staying. Try again.”
“I don’t know.” Doyle simply said. He then smiled. “You right. I did find him, after you guys did. I should’ve thought harder.” He chuckled darkly. “Our beautiful girl liked cul-de-sacs. I should’ve bought her one when I could.”
Y/n felt a shiver run down her spine as he spoke, wanting nothing more than to walk to him and beat him up, but she stopped herself. “Where. Is Declan.”
“I know you’re trying to scare me. This is your strategy and-“
“I couldn’t care less what happens to you. It is known that not only us were looking for you, and I have no doubt that there is at least someone who would love to have your head. So don’t test me.” Y/n snapped. “I only care about finding Declan.”
Doyle tried to hide his worry with a huff of a laugh, staring right at y/n’s eyes. “Ah. You the girl she went to visit the day before. The person she was protecting the most.” He grinned. “She meant more than just a simple coworker, right?”
Y/n’s breathing became heavy at the mention, trying to stay as calm as possible. “We’re not here to talk about me
or Emily. We’re here to talk about Declan.”
“Did you get enough of her? Or did I took her way too soon?” Doyle smirked. “Because let me tell you that
even if she was not who she said she was
she was really good in bed.” He laughed.
Before y/n could think twice of what she was going to do, she was by Doyle’s side and soon enough, she punched him right in the face. But before she could do anything else, Morgan had walked into the room and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her out of the room as y/n yelled at Doyle to go to hell. Y/n tried for Morgan to let go of her, but Morgan kept his grip tight until they were in the hallway, JJ following them and leaving Rossi and Strauss behind.
“Let go of me!” Y/n pushed Morgan away and turned to look at them. “Didn’t you hear what he said?!”
“Which is why I told you it was a bad idea, y/n.” JJ said softly, not trying to pick up a fight with her.
Y/n ran her hand through her hair as she tried to calm down. She shook her head as she felt tears in her eyes. “He knew
he
” she sighed as she nibbled on her lip.
Spencer walked to them and placed his hands on y/n’s shoulder. “Let’s go get some air.” He said softly as y/n turned to look at him.
Y/n looked back at Morgan and JJ. “I’m sorry.” She said softly before she followed Spencer to the rooftop. Once they got there, y/n shook her head as she looked at the sky for a moment, her hand finding her necklace. “I knew I’d lose it.”
Spencer looked at her and nodded. “But you still went inside.”
“I don’t know why.” Y/n sighed. “I do want to find Declan. I know Emily cared for him.”
“But you also want revenge for Emily.” Spencer simply said as he nodded, shrugging. “I get it.”
Y/n looked at Spencer and smiled softly. “Cases like this gets the worse of us, huh?”
Spencer nodded as he offered a small smile. “Apparently.”
Y/n raised her brow as she grinned playfully. “You’re not gonna make a smart comment? Quote? Story?”
Spencer huffed a chuckle as he shook his head. “I just thought we could use some fresh air.” He looked at y/n and smiled. “And that you needed a friend.”
Y/n smiled softly as she walked to him and leaned her head on his shoulder as she looked back at the sky. “You’re always right, Reid.” She said softly.
They stayed there for another twenty minutes or so, until they both got a text from JJ saying they were needed for a meeting. Y/n furrowed her brows and looked at Spencer but said nothing as they returned inside. Once they got there, y/n stared at Garcia with a confused look, no one really knew what was happening, which confused her even more. When Morgan walked in with JJ and Rossi, y/n knew that something was definitely not right, but she tried to stay as calm as possible as she crossed her arms. Finally Hotch walked in the room and told everyone to sit down, making y/n turn to look at JJ for a moment as she stood beside him, but she stayed where she was along with Morgan.
“Seven months ago I made a decision that affected this team.” Hotch said calmly, staring at all of them. “As you all know, Emily had lost a lot of blood after her fight with Doyle. But the doctors were able to stabilize her.”
Y/n felt her heart drop as she stared at Hotch. “W-What?”
Hotch sighed softly as he looked down at the table. “She was airlifted from Boston to Bethesda under covert exfiltration. Her identity was strictly need-to-know.”
Y/n felt dizzy at his words, gripping the back of the chair in front of her. “You
you’re saying
”
Garcia stared at Hotch with tears in her eyes, her voice weak as she spoke. “She’s alive?”
“But we buried her.” Spencer simply said. Everyone had confused looks at this point.
“As I said, I take full responsibility for the decision.” Hotch said as he stared at me. “If anyone has any issues, they should be directed toward me.”
“Any issues?” Morgan snapped.
Y/n didn’t know where her eyes had started to water, her whole body trembling as she tried to process everything. She looked at JJ and suddenly everything made sense. “You knew.” She said almost in a whisper.
JJ swallowed as she stared at y/n. “Y/n-“
“You knew.” Y/n shook her head. “You
” she scoffed as she tried to avoid the tears to leave her eyes. She looked at Hotch and shook her head again. “How could you?”
“Oh, my God.” Garcia whispered softly.
Y/n furrowed her brows and turned to the door, her heart dropping as Emily stood there. Emily stared at everyone in the room until her eyes landed on y/n, a faint smile on her face, tears forming in her eyes. Garcia and Spencer were the first ones to stand up and walk to Emily to hug her. Y/n stared at Morgan for a moment and then her eyes went back to Emily. Her hand unconsciously went to her necklace as tears rolled down her face. She heard Emily’s voice, but it was like she was stuck in a dream, one of those dreams she’s had in the last seven months where Emily comes back and apologizes for leaving, and in the dream, she’s the happiest person, hugging her and kissing her and begging her to not leave again. But this was reality. She was here. They finally gave space for Emily to walk to Morgan and y/n, Morgan hugging her, a confused look on his face. And then there she was; right in front of y/n.
Emily had tears rolling down her cheeks as she looked at y/n. “My love
” she whispered softly. “I am
so sorry.”
Y/n stared at her, tears rolling down her eyes. She shook her head in disbelief. Her eyes studying Emily, her face, her body, just all of her. “You’re alive.” She finally whispered.
Emily smiled sadly as she nodded. “Yes.” She whispered softly as she stepped closer, placing her hands on y/n’s cheeks, stroking them softly. “I’m here.”
Y/n felt like her chest was going to explode as she felt her touch. She tried her best not to pass out right there as she stared at her. But instead of what she did in her dreams, she took her hands and took them away, letting them go. She cleared her throat as she turned to look at Hotch.
“Do you need me?” Y/n simply asked, her voice lower than she expected.
Hotch stared at her and understood what she was asking. He shook his head. “No. In case we need you, we’ll call you.”
Y/n nodded softly before she walked away. Emily sobbed quietly as she tried to follow after her, but Rossi stopped her. “We need to find Declan right now.”
JJ looked at Hotch. “I’ll go.” She said quietly as she went after y/n. She tried to catch her before she walked to the elevator, grabbing her by the arm carefully. “Hey-“
“You knew!” Y/n turned to look at her, tears rolling down her cheeks as she sobbed. “All this time
you fucking knew, and you didn’t say a thing.”
“You heard Hotch. It was for her safety, y/n. I would’ve told you if I had authorization, but-“
“Bullshit!” Y/n snapped as she sobbed, her bottom lip trembling. “You were there, JJ
you saw how I s-suffered.” Her voice broke as she spoke. “You saw me at my lowest and you didn’t think that it was a good idea to tell me the truth? She has been alive this whole time, I have been mourning her
I-“ she sobbed uncontrollably.
JJ tried to hold back her tears as she stepped closer to y/n. “Y/n, I’m sorry
”
Y/n shook her head. “Right.” She simply said before she entered the elevator and pressed the buttons to close the doors.
********************
“So
how angry is the team?” Emily asked as she walked with JJ.
JJ sighed. “They’re in shock.”
Emily stopped JJ and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry if y/n is upset at you.”
JJ shrugged as she smiled. “We knew it would happen. She’s just
she’s overwhelmed. Confused even.” She shook her head. “She had it bad for a long time, Emily.”
Emily’s heart broke as she heard JJ, nodding her head softly. She cleared her throat as she tried to swallow back her tears. “You think
you think that she’ll
want to talk to me?”
JJ smiled sadly. “I don’t know. At least, not right now. I don’t think she wants anyone from the team.”
Emilly nodded, smiling sadly. “Thank you
for keeping your promise.”
JJ smiled. “It is really good to see you.” She chuckled softly as she wrapped her arm around her waist as they walked back to the team.
Emily knew this would happen. All of these months that she had been away, she kept thinking of the day where she’d finally be able to come back and find y/n again. Of course she hadn’t expected y/n to wait for her, she didn’t even know how long it would take until she could come back to the states, and if she was being honest, it had happened way before than she thought. For a moment, she wished and begged that things would be okay, of course they wouldn’t be perfect, but at least that they would understand why she did this. And in all honesty, they had taken that decision for her, not giving her the chance to even tell the close people in her life that she was alive. Yes, she had been upset, she had been mad about it, but there was nothing she could do in this case, so for a long time, she had to play another role. Every single day, every single night, y/n was in her mind, wishing she could just reach out to her and tell her everything, even if it meant that she’d be in trouble for it, and that had been her greatest mistake. And now
he didn’t even know if y/n wanted to see her or talk to her.
********************
Emily took a deep breath as she stood in front of y/n’s door. It was past midnight, and she was sure that this was a mistake, and she was supposed to be staying at a hotel but all that had been in her mind, had been y/n. It had been such an eventful day, very overwhelming, and she wished she could just walk in and hold y/n in her arms. She took another deep breath before she knocked on the door softly, nibbling on her bottom lip as she waited, hoping that y/n would open the door. She looked back and hoped that the neighbors wouldn’t wake up for the knocking or ask why she was here so late. She closed her eyes for a moment, thinking that maybe y/n wouldn’t come to the door, thinking that it was anyone from the team, or even knowing that it was Emily, and she wouldn’t want to open the door and-
Y/n opened the door and felt her heart dropping as she stared at Emily. “Emily
” she whispered softly, her eyes on Emily’s.
Emily smiled a little. “Hi.” She whispered as she stared back into her eyes. “I uh
I’m sorry. I know it’s late and-“
“You just finished with the case.” Y/n nodded. “Morgan kept me updated.”
Emily nodded as she sighed. “Oh
well. Then you know what happened.”
Y/n nodded. “Are you okay?”
Emily nodded again as she smiled a little. “Declan is okay, which is
all that mattered.”
Y/n smiled a little. “I’m glad.” She said softly. She then looked around the hallway and knew perfectly that Emily was not just here to tell her that, so she decided to swallow back her feelings and let her in. “Come on.”
Emily’s heart warmed as she smiled, walking into the apartment. She looked around as she walked through the small hallway, noticing that nothing had changed. She then heard a meow, making her turn to the floor and her smile widened. “Serge!” She chuckled as she picked him up. “You kept him.” She looked at y/n as she walked to her.
Y/n smiled softly as she leaned over the wall. “P and I share custody.” She shrugged. “Since sometimes I need to leave, Penelope takes care of him. I decided to pick him up today.” She looked at Emily.
Emily sighed softly and kissed his head before putting him down and looking back at y/n, licking her lips nervously. “So
I don’t
there is so much to say.”
Y/n nodded as she crossed her arms. “There is.” She whispered softly as she looked down at the floor. “I
get why you did what you did.”
“But you’re still upset.” Emily said softly as she stared at her.
Y/n looked up at Emily and shook her head. “I’m not upset. At least
” she looked down at her hands as she cleared her throat. “
at least not anymore.”
Emily nodded. She didn’t say anything for a moment, taking in y/n’s appearance and feeling her heart sinking as she noticed the redness on her face and the puffy eyes. And then her face softened as she noticed the necklace. “You still using it.” She smiled softly.
Y/n looked up at Emily and then at the necklace. She chuckled softly as she grabbed it, smiling softly. “I never take it off.” She said softly as she looked back up at Emily. “You gave it to me
it was
one of the only things I had to hold on to you.”
Emily felt her eyes getting teary as she looked down at her hands, fidgeting with her fingers. “I’m so sorry, y/n
” she whispered softly, her voice cracking slightly. “I never
if I had had the chance
I’d have told you.”
“You called.”
Emily looked up at y/n, her lips parting slightly. “I
yes.”
Y/n nodded as she smiled sadly. “The first time the phone didn’t register the call and it said unknown. And the other times
I noticed the number and I didn’t recognize the code.” She huffed a chuckle. “I asked Penelope, and she told me it was from Paris. I told her to ignore it and drop it.”
Emily nodded. “You blocked it.”
“No one ever answered anyway.” Y/n shrugged as she smiled.
Emily smiled. “I wanted to.”
“I bet.” Y/n nodded as she just stared at Emily.
Emily tilted her head as she nibbled on her bottom lip. “I made JJ promise that she’d take care of you. That’s why she was with you this whole time. And I know that
you’re
”
“Hurt.” Y/n interrupted her, feeling her eyes getting teary again. “I’m hurt that
this whole time
she was the one who saw me at my lowest. She was here when I was sobbing and holding your clothes, looking at your pictures. I went to her house, and we stayed in her room as I sobbed because something reminded me of you. She went with me to your
grave
whenever I wanted to go.” I shrugged as tears rolled down my eyes. “And the thing is
that I understand. I understand all of it and I dreamt so many times of you showing up at my door, telling me you were sorry but that you were back. And I’d hug you, and you’d hold me close, and I’d kiss you
and it would feel so real.” She sobbed softly. “And I wanted to do that when I first saw you. I’m
I don’t know how to feel, Emily. I am so confused. I don’t even know if I’m mad at you. God, I was so upset when I found out about everything. But I was so worried. And I was upset that you were gone.” She shook her head as she wrapped her arms around herself, looking down at the floor.
Emily took a deep shaky breath as she walked to her, raising her hands to touch her but then backing away, not sure if it was the right move. “I wanted to tell you everything. I swear I wanted to. But if I had
you would’ve been more at risk. I couldn’t let him know about you. I couldn’t
I couldn’t let him get to you.” She felt tears running down her cheeks as she stared at y/n. “I wanted to protect you. I wanted to protect the team.”
“You could’ve actually died, Emily!” Y/n snapped as she looked up at her. “I saw you bleeding! You were dying and I couldn’t even hold you because I was scared if I moved you, you’d bleed out! You
” she sobbed as her voice cracked.
And then she tried to push Emily, but Emily placed her hands on her shoulders, and then she started hitting her chest, not hard enough to hurt her and not for long. Emily wrapped her arms around her and held her close to her, cradling her to her chest. Y/n sobbed uncontrollably, gripping Emily’s jacket as she buried her face on her chest. Emily couldn’t help the tears that rolled down her cheeks, sobbing quietly as she kissed y/n’s head softly, her hand gently stroking her head, her fingers running through the strands in a soothing motion. They stayed like that for what felt like forever, neither of them saying a thing. Y/n closed her eyes as she heard Emily’s heartbeat, helping her calm down.
“I missed you
” Y/n whispered softly, small sobs leaving her lips.
Emily kissed her head again, her lips lingering there for a moment. “I missed you too. So much.” She sighed softly as she closed her eyes. “I missed you terribly. I am so sorry, baby. I am deeply sorry.”
Y/n sniffled as she wrapped her arms around Emily, nuzzling her face in the crook of her neck. “At least you got the vacation Rossi told you about.” She mumbled softly, a faint chuckle leaving her lips.
Emily chuckled softly, tears still rolling down her cheeks. Her smile then fainted slowly as she thought about it. “But you were not there.”
“We can always fix that.” Y/n said softly, pulling away enough to look up at Emily.
Emily looked at her, her face softening as she smiled, her face falling to her cheek to stroke it softly. “You
you forgive me?”
Y/n smiled softly. “There is so much we need to talk about
but Em
I cannot lose you again. I can’t.” Her voice cracked as she spoke the last words, looking right into those beautiful brown eyes that she missed.
“You’re not gonna lose me. I’m here to stay. I’m not going anywhere.” Emily smiled softly as she looked into her eyes.
Y/n smiled softly as she nodded. “I’ll find you if you ever leave again. Garcia and I won’t let you get away.” She grinned playfully.
Emily tilted her head, chuckling softly. “I don’t ever want to go. I’m here to stay.” She smiled softly, her eyes darting down to her lips for a split second before they returned to her eyes.
Y/n bit her lip softly as she smiled. “Do it.”
Emily furrowed her brows. “What?”
Y/n smiled softly before she leaned in and pressed her lips gently against Emily’s, a soft and yet firm kiss being placed on her lips. Emily smiled against her lips before she kissed her back, her stroking her cheek softly as y/n’s hands were placed on her back, pulling her close against her body. The kiss was gentle, sweet, it wasn’t rushed or hungry. It was like they just needed to feel each other’s lips, slowly dancing against each other’s, and that was it. As they pulled away, Emily couldn’t help the goody smile spread on her lips, a soft chuckle falling from her lips as she leaned her forehead against y/n’s.
“Yeah
I wanted to do that but didn’t know if it was the right thing to do.” Emily chuckled softly.
Y/n smiled, pecking her lips softly. “Like I said
I’ve wanted to do it since I first saw you.” She then tilted her head and raised her brow. “Unless
you have someone waiting on you in Paris.”
Emily laughed softly and shook her head. “You know I
” she scoffed. “All these months, I was scared that maybe you’d decide to move on and
once I was back
you would be happy with someone else.” She stared into her eyes. “I wouldn’t have blamed you, though.”
Y/n smiled softly, rolling her eyes playfully. “I, instead, spent all these months ugly crying on your favorite hoodie and then was upset because it didn’t smell like you anymore.” She grinned playfully.
“Oh, poor baby.” Emily said as she laughed. She leaned down again and kissed her lips softly. “I know there is so much we need to talk about but
do you think I could stay with you tonight?”
Y/n raised her brow playfully. “Is it too soon to talk about you moving in with me?”
Emily’s eyes light up at her words, her smile widening. “Not soon at all.” She giggled and leaned down to kiss her lips again.
For the next two hours or so, they both talked about everything that had happened while Emily was gone. Emily mentioned some of the things she did back in Paris, and then what was a serious conversation at first turned into a comfortable and sweet conversation, making up for lost time. Y/n knew deep down, she was still somehow hurt and maybe a little upset, but the fact that she had Emily back, that all of those dreams she’s had came true, made her realize that even if she still had a mess of feelings, she was happy to have her back, and this time she wouldn’t let her go so easily. Before they knew it, they were wrapped around each other’s arms and fast asleep, and for the first time in months, both of them had the best sleep.
********************
After being suspended for the events with Ian Doyle, y/n and Emily took a much needed time for themselves, ignoring phones and any technology, just spending their time with each other. They decided it was best if they looked for another place, start over, and so they made it their mission to find the perfect place for them. When they got called to court, both were nervous about the teams reactions, knowing that they were still shocked and a bit upset about Emily, and y/n hadn’t actually talked much to them. As Emily went in, y/n talked to Spencer for a while, until she saw JJ walking to them, offering a small smile as she approached y/n. Spencer noticed the hint and walked away, joining Rossi and Morgan.
JJ smiled softly as she stood in front of y/n. “I thought I wouldn’t get to see you today.”
Y/n shrugged. “I heard they’ll get us all inside at some point. So, you would’ve seen me inside.” She smiled softly. “JJ
”
“I’m sorry.” JJ said rapidly. “Emily and I wanted to tell you. I begged them to let me tell you, But they-“
“JJ, I’m sorry I snapped at you like that. I know why you did what you did, and I forgive you. I’m sorry I just snapped and didn’t let you talk.” Y/n titled her head as she smiled. “You were there for me, and you never left my side. Emily told me all about it.”
JJ smiled. “So I take it you guys are okay?”
“More than okay.” Y/n smiled softly. ‘We’re looking for a new place.”
JJ clapped softly as she chuckled. “I’m so happy you guys are okay. I’m so happy for you.”
Y/n chuckled softly as she wrapped her arms around JJ, hugging her tightly. A few hours more passed before they were back in the BAU, everyone waiting to hear from Strauss if they were free to go or if they were in more trouble. But then, Strauss broke the news that they were okay, and that Emily had to do with it, and to their surprise, Emily was offered back her job, which didn’t take her long to accept. Even if Emily knew that it would still take the team some time to adjust to her again and to forgive her for what had happened, Emily was willing to do anything to gain their trust back, and she was just happy to be able to be reunited with her family again.
Y/n closed the door behind her and walked to the living room where Emily was not sitting with Sergio beside her. She chuckled softly as she leaned over the couch. “He missed you.”
Emily looked up at her and smiled. “Guess he did.” She raised her brow playfully and patted her lap.
Y/n chuckled softly as she made her way to Emily, sitting on her lap with her legs on either side of Emily and wrapping her arms around her neck. “Hi.”
Emily chuckled as she looked up at her, wrapping her arms around her waist. “Hey there.” She smiled.
“So tomorrow we have an appointment at two. We got enough time to have a lazy morning.” Y/n grinned softly as she leaned down to kiss her nose softly and then kiss her cheeks.
Emily chuckled and nodded. “Perfect.” She leaned in and kissed her softly, smiling against her lips. “You know I love you, right?” Y/n raised her brow at her words, making Emily laugh. “I am going to say it more often, so get used to it.”
Y/n chuckled as she leaned down to kiss her lips. “I love you more. Thank you for coming back to me.”
Emily smiled and nodded. “Always, my love.” She kissed her lips again, pulling her closer to her, not leaving any space between them.
After months of insufferable pain, late nights, long days, etc., Emily could finally say that this was over. She was back to the place where she belonged, she was back with the love of her life and there was nothing else she could ask for. It was finally over.

If the team noticed Emily acting weird, they didn’t say anything about it. For the last two weeks, Emily had been acting strange, kind of off which was weird about Emily. Every once in a while, she’d crack a joke or even make fun of Morgan or Reid or anyone on the team, but nothing had been done. The cases they’ve had had been a bit of a pain, which could possibly be the reason why Emily had been acting so weird. Garcia was the first one to really say something to Emily, she had been teasing and trying to get information in case she had a secret boyfriend for the times she had been late to work, but Emily had stopped her from keep going and they just forgot about it for that moment. Reid then had asked her if she was okay and Emily had said that she was, even if she had started picking on her nails again and it was something that Reid had noticed she did when she was stressed, but again, Emily brushed it off.
The only person who could truly see Emily off work was Agent Y/n Carter, the one person that was the closest to Emily, who had always been there with Emily and for Emily, the one person that could really say that she knew more about Emily than anyone in the BAU. What they didn’t know is that y/n was not only the closest person to Emily in a friendly way, but they had been dating for the last year. No, it’s not that they didn’t trust the team, they loved them, they would do anything for them, but if they said anything about their relationship, which meant that there was a chance that they could be used against each other in case they got threatened or were hostages -which of course they hoped it never happened-. But they still wanted to keep the secret to themselves for as long as possible, and either way, they were able to enjoy it and have a relationship for them and only them.
“Hey, P! Leaving now, you need a ride?” Y/n walked to Penelope’s room and offered a smile.
“Ah, no sweet cheeks. Car is fixed, I’m driving myself now.” Penelope smiled as she grabbed her things.
Y/n nodded. “See you tomorrow then.” She was about to leave before she was stopped by Penelope’s voice.
“Hey honey?” Penelope asked softly.
Y/n turned to look at her and smiled. “Yeah?”
“Have you uh
have you talked to Emily?”
Y/n furrowed her brows as she stared at Penelope. “Uh
I mean
she was mostly with Morgan in the case so
not really. Why? Something wrong?” She tilted her head as she walked back to Penelope.
“I just
I’ve noticed that she’s been acting a bit odd.” Penelope shrugged. “I even asked her if she was preggo.” She chuckled.
Y/n chuckled softly as she shook her head. “Do we even know if she’s got a boyfriend?”
“Well, she brushed it off when I mentioned it, but
you know
she’s been late these past few days and that’s not common of her.”
Y/n nodded softly and offered a smile. “I’ll try to talk to her tomorrow when I see her. But I’m sure she’s okay, P. Just
maybe stressed.”
Penelope nodded and smiled. “She trusts you more than she trusts anyone here, honey. I’m sure she’ll let you know if somethings going on.”
“I know.” Y/n smiled. “Night love.”
“Goodnight pretty girl!”
Y/n walked to the elevator and sighed softly as the doors closed. They had been busy with the last few cases that she hadn’t really paid any attention to Emily’s attitude or behaviour, which now that she thought about it, was really wrong of her, and she felt bad about it. As she got in her car, she decided to make a few stops before she stopped by Emily’s apartment. The whole ride, she thought of what exactly she was going to tell Emily, because she knew better than to get to her and be all like ‘oh you’ve been acting weird so I thought I could come and figure out what’s wrong with you’. As much as Emily loved y/n, Emily was not exactly an open book. She finally got to Emily’s apartment and decided it was better to use her key instead of knocking on the door. She walked inside the apartment and was greeted by Sergio, she closed the door softly and as she turned, she found Emily walking out of her room with her gun in hand.
“Woah, Em! It’s me!” Y/n raised her hands as she looked at Emily.
Emily sighed heavily as she put her fun on the back of her jeans and walked to y/n. “What are you doing here?”
Y/n cleared her throat. “Uh
” she looked down at her hands and had a bag of desserts and in the other hand, she had flowers. “I uh
well
I’ve noticed that you haven’t been yourself, I thought you were tired and exhausted, so I decided to
bring something.” She offered a shy smile as she looked at Emily.
Emily’s heart warmed as she stared at y/n, smiling softly as she walked to her, grabbing the flowers, and smelling them. “They smell wonderful.” She looked up at y/n and smiled. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you.” Y/n leaned in and pecked her lips softly. “I also brought your favorite.” She smiled.
Emily chuckled softly as she nodded. “Thank you.” She walked to the kitchen and took a deep breath. She grabbed a vase to put the flowers in and filled it with water. She hated that she had to tell y/n that she couldn’t stay, all she wanted was to be held and to have y/n with her, but she couldn’t put her at risk.
The thing was her nemesis was in the city. Just a few hours ago, she had met with the person she never thought she’d ever see again, the person that she had left in her past and that had been nothing but another case for her. Ian Doyle was looking for her, and she had now put everyone at risk, and the last thing she needed, was for Ian to find out that y/n was more than just a friend and a colleague, he had no idea about her, he thought that the most important thing for Emily was her life, and the team was her family, so in a way, y/n was still very much at risk, but at least he had no idea that she was more than just a friend.
Emily walked back to the dining room and smiled at y/n. “I’m sorry
I hate to do this but I just
” she sighed. “I think I’m getting that flu that Garcia’s been talking about.” She huffed a chuckle as she stared at y/n.
Y/n tilted her head as she pouted. “So you want me to go?”
Emily smiled sadly. “I’m afraid you’ll catch it, and it’ll be a fun thing to explain to the rest of the team why we both have it.” She grinned.
Y/n rolled her eyes playfully and nodded. “I guess you’re right.” She sighed as she stared at Emily, walking to her. “Em
are you okay?”
“I am.” Emily smiled.
Y/n squinted her eyes and raised her brow. “You’re not getting tired of me, are you?”
Emily felt her heart sinking as she stared at her girlfriend. She smiled softly and walked to her, wrapping her arms around her shoulders, and resting her forehead against hers. “I love you too much to do that.” She whispered softly as she smiled.
Y/n smiled widely as she wrapped her arms around her waist. “I love you too.” She furrowed her brows. “You’re really getting sick, Prentiss. You’d have joked about it.”
Emily shrugged. “I also like to tell you that I love you, because I really do.” She smiled softly, leaning in, and kissing her lips softly.
Y/n smiled against her lips and held her as close as possible. “Thought you didn’t want to give me the flu.” She whispered against her lips once they pulled away.
“A kiss won’t hurt.” Emily chuckled softly as she looked at y/n. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
Y/n nodded. “Sure will.” She smiled. “Save me my dessert, I’ll come eat it when you feel better.” She grinned as she walked to the door, she petted Sergio before she finally left.
Emily sighed again and felt her eyes getting watery. She hated that she had to do this, she hated that she was pushing the one person she trusted with her whole heart
but again
that sounded pretty hypocrite since y/n had no idea about her past with Ian Doyle. No one could know. She preferred to lie about it than put them more at risk.
********************
Y/n stretched as she got up from bed and yawned. After the exhausting days that they’ve had at the BAU, she had returned home and gotten herself in bed, trying to get herself to get some rest before whatever event was going to happen the next day. But right at two am, there had been a knock on her door, which woke her from her beauty sleep. She walked to the door and looked into the small hole, furrowing her brows as she noticed Emily standing right in front of the door. She opened the door and smiled sleepily.
“You lost your key again?” Y/n raised her brows as she stared at Emily.
Emily smiled softly. “I forgot it at home.”
Y/n nodded. “And you forgot your keys too?”
“I just wanted to see you.” Emily said softly.
Y/n furrowed her brows but said nothing, grabbing Emily’s hand and pulling her inside the apartment, closing the door behind her. “What’s going on, Em?” She said softly.
Emily took a deep breath as she shook her head. “I’ve just been having a hard time sleeping.”
“Then stay here with me.”
“I can’t.” Emily sighed softly. “Sergio
he’s been a pain in the ass. He hates that I leave him alone.”
Y/n grinned softly. “I’m gonna start to be jealous of him, getting all your attention.”
Emily rolled her eyes playfully. She then cupped y/n’s face in her hands, bringing their lips into a sweet and tender kiss. Emily could feel her eyes getting teary, but she stayed close to y/n and kept kissing her softly. Y/n wrapped her arms around Emily, her hands going up and down her back, her fingertips delicately touching her as she kissed Emily back. Even if Emily had this tough, bad girl persona, everyone knew that Emily had a soft spot because she was also a complete nerd, and y/n was lucky enough to say that she was able to experience it. They both pulled away slowly, resting their foreheads against each other’s, smiling softly.
“You know I love you, right?” Emily said softly, smiling at y/n.
“I know.” Y/n pulled away to look into her beautiful brown eyes as she nodded. “And I love you. A lot.” She whispered softly as she kissed her nose softly.
Emily smiled as she ran her fingers through her hair. “This whole stress will end soon.”
Y/n furrowed her brows slightly but nodded. “It will. Maybe you should consider what Rossi said about taking a vacation.” She grinned softly.
Emily chuckled softly as she nodded. “Go somewhere far away from here, no cellphones or technology
just us.”
“Well, he meant only for you.” Y/n teased.
“But I’d take you with me.” Emily smiled lovingly as her other hand stroked her cheek. “I want you with me.”
“And I’ll always be here, Em.” Y/n smiled as she leaned in to kiss her lips again. “Always.”
Emily nodded softly as she kissed her lips again, smiling sadly. “Hey uh
” she reached on her pocket and smiled softly down at her hands. “I got you something.” She looked back at y/n.
Y/n furrowed her brows and tried to look at what Emily had in her hands. “What is it?” She grinned softly.
Emily smiled softly and then opened her hand to show y/n what she had in hands, raising her brow softly. “You always mention you like it.”
Y/n’s lips parted and soon after turned into a smile, looking back up at Emily. “Em
you
you wear this necklace more than anything.”
Emily chuckled softly as she grabbed the heraldic rose pendant and moved behind y/n. She moved y/n’s hair to the side and placed the necklace delicately. “You always mentioned how you liked it
loved it, actually. And I thought maybe you should have it.” She smiled softly as she leaned down to kiss her shoulder. “It’ll look better on you anyway.” She then moved back to face y/n.
Y/n looked down at it and smiled softly. “I do love it.” She looked back at Emily as she held it. “Em-“
“Consider it an early birthday gift.” Emily grinned.
“Still two months to go, though.” Y/n raised her brow as she grinned.
“I like spoiling you, and you know it.” Emily smiled as she wrapped her arms around her and kissed her lips softly. “I gotta go, it’s late.” She whispered softly as she stared at her.
“And Sergio is gonna kill you.” Y/n grinned playfully.
Emily chuckled as she nodded. “Yes.” She looked into y/n’s eyes and smiled, leaning in to kiss her forehead softly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.” Y/n smiled.
Y/n stared at her until Emily closed the door and then she was gone, her hands still in the necklace. She sighed softly as she locked the door, her mind spinning as thoughts started to cloud her whole mind. There was something going on, but y/n couldn’t figure out what it was. Emily was definitely not herself, but if she pushed, Emily would only brush it off and she’d say nothing was going on, but the more she focused on Emily, the more worried she was about her. But she was right, this would soon end, and they would be able to go back to their lives.
********************
The whole time they were at the BAU, y/n kept an eye on Emily, trying to focus on what Hotch and the rest of the team was saying about this whole case, but she couldn’t help but see every move that Emily made. She was quieter than usual, which was not normal of her, she always had so much to say about the cases, y/n always found Emily being the best profiler in the team, of course they had their own thing, and she didn’t just think about it because she was her girlfriend, but she truly admired Emily so much, it surprised her when Emily gave her attention and actually wanted to be with her, even with the slight age difference, Emily still had her eyes on y/n. So yes, y/n knew Emily better than anyone in that room, but lately, it seemed like what she knew meant nothing.
Once Emily and Derek were back, y/n couldn’t help but keep her eyes on Emily, but this time, her full attention was on her. Every reaction, every movement, every facial expression, she was trying to get anything she could. As they continued to talk about the case, y/n noticed the way Emily became more tense about it and the way she kept fidgeting with her hands. Before anything else could happen, once the team was a bit more distracted, y/n pulled Emily with her and pulled them inside the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
“What are you doing?” Emily asked, brows furrowed as she stared at y/n.
Y/n crossed her arms as she looked at Emily. “What is going on, Emily?”
Emily shook her head. “I don’t-“
“You do know.” Y/n said, trying not to sound upset or worried. “Emily, I can see the way you’re acting. You never get to work late, even when we have spent the night together. You have barely eaten anything, you’ve barely been sleeping, I can notice. You haven’t been yourself, Em.”
“Baby
I don’t really wanna talk about it.” Emily rubbed her hand on her face as she looked down at the floor.
Y/n shook her head. “I know you don’t. But Emily
you’re not okay. I can tell. I’m here, why won’t you talk to me?” She walked close to Emily and placed her hands on her shoulders, sliding them down to grab her hands. “Please. I’m worried about you, Em.” She whispered softly.
Emily shook her head. “I just
” she sighed as she looked back at y/n. “
I’ve been having these nightmares, I’m exhausted. I want this to end. I need it to end.” She felt her eyes getting teary as her hands landed on y/n’s cheeks, stroking them softly. “I’ll be okay.”
Y/n shook her head as she sighed, wrapping her arms around Emily’s waist. “I’ll stop pushing
but Em, seriously
I’m here.” She looked into her eyes as she smiled. “Come to me. Talk to me.” She whispered softly.
Emily nodded as she leaned down to kiss her lips. “I love you.” She whispered softly against her lips.
Y/n smiled softly. “I love you too.” She kissed her nose softly and then her lips again.
Emily sighed as she pulled away and smiled softly. “We should get back.”
Y/n only nodded and then walked out of the bathroom with Emily, making sure that no one had seen them. As they went back with the rest, y/n still had her attention on Emily but said nothing more. As for Emily, she knew that sooner or later, y/n would figure out what was going on, the whole team would figure it out and there was nothing that would stop them, so she had to act fast. Things were only getting worse, more people were dying, and it was on Emily, and the thought of it was eating her alive. If she didn’t do anything now, he’d soon get to all of them. He’d get to y/n.
********************
Y/n furrowed her brows as she walked around the halls, looking around. After they had mentioned the profile of Ian Doyle, they had gathered around to make a plan and see where they could go next and that’s when she noticed that Emily was nowhere to be found. She saw her once she arrived back with Morgan, she had a worried look, her face had entirely changed and y/n was sure this had something to do with this whole thing, but if she pushed, she knew that she wouldn’t get anything anyway. Once Hotch dismissed everyone, that’s when she noticed she was gone. What was she doing?
“Guys, I cannot find Emily anywhere.” Y/n walked to them and stared at all of them. “What?”
Rossi sighed. “We believe Emily is involved with this case.”
Y/n furrowed her brows. “What?” She shook her head. “No
she would’ve said something. What do you mean involved?”
“Years ago, she was undercover. Weeks ago, she mentioned a name, Lauren Reynolds. Saying she was gone. I believe that was her undercover name.”
Y/n felt dizzy for a moment as she stared at them, not sure what was going on. Emily would’ve told her the truth, as much as she had wanted to protect them, she wouldn’t have lied to her. But she did
that’s why she had been acting weird, she had been pushing her away, she didn’t even let her stay at her apartment. That visit at two a.m., the necklace, Emily repeatedly telling her that she loved her
Emily was hiding it so y/n wouldn’t find out. Emily was a hopeless romantic, that was not a secret, but the way she had been acting, the way she had spoken to y/n
it all made sense now. She was trying to protect her, Ian was after them, and Emily was going to deal with this alone.
It was like her body was acting on its own once they moved to review the information JJ had. She didn’t even know when JJ had arrived, but she was there, she was there to help with the case. Y/n only sat there and tried to focus on everything about which they were talking. Emily had been undercover
she had been one of Ian’s lovers
his lover. She had been involved with him and she was one of the reasons he had ended up behind bars. She had never actually asked much about Emily’s past jobs, Emily always told her about her life, she knew the nerd she was, the silly movies she loved to watch, the books she read, she knew her routine in the morning and at night, what annoyed her and what she liked. She knew Emily. Right? She knew her, she just
didn’t know this part. Emily trusted her. Or maybe not.
“Carter
did you know about this?” Derek snapped as he looked back at y/n, making her snap out of her trance.
Y/n furrowed her brows as she stared at him. “W-What?”
“You’re the closest to Emily. You spend more time with her than with any of us. Did she tell you any of this?” Derek stood up and kept his eyes fixated on y/n.
“Derek
no. I had no idea
I-“
“Please.” Derek scoffed. “You always say it, you know more about Emily than any of us. Why should I believe that you didn’t know any of this?”
“Morgan.” Hotch warned as he stared at him.
“No!” Derek looked at everyone and then went back to y/n. “You and Emily have been hiding this from us for days. She’s now on the run and we have no idea where she could be. So enlighten us, Carter. Tell us where she is so this ends now.”
Y/n stood up from her seat, feeling anger growing in the pit of her stomach. “I have no idea
where she is, Morgan.” She felt her eyes getting teary as she stared at him. “I didn’t know anything about this. She never told me. Trust me, I’m not stupid. If I knew where she was, I wouldn’t be sitting here listening to your crap. I wouldn’t have let her leave. You were the last one with her, what did she tell you?”
“She said nothing. Because she doesn’t trust us. Apparently, you included.” Derek snapped.
“That’s enough.” Rossi said as he stared at both of them.
“Why should I believe you? Why should I believe that you’re not covering for Emily? You’re best friends. You two are literally glued to each other, and you want me to believe that you’re not hiding anything from us? Emily put you up to this, but this has to end now, Carter!” Derek yelled as he walked to Carter. “You’re the person she trusted the most, huh? If she’s your best friend, then you’ll tell us whe-“
“She was more than my best friend! I love her!” Y/n snapped as tears rolled down her cheeks as she stared at Derek. She sobbed softly as she took a step back, feeling everyone’s eyes on her. She looked down at the floor as she shook her head. “We’ve
we’ve been dating for a whole year
we didn’t say anything because
we didn’t want anyone to use us against each other in case something went south on a case.” She said between sobs. “She didn’t tell me anything, Morgan.” She looked back up at him. “You’re right. Maybe she didn’t trust me. Maybe she just wanted to protect me. I don’t even know what to think. I don’t know what’s going on. So please
back off, and let’s focus on finding Emily.”
Everyone in the room said nothing more about the subject, Rossi and Morgan decided to go to Emily’s apartment and y/n went over her bag and handed them the key, staring at Morgan as she did and then leaving the room. She could’ve offered to go with them, she could’ve said that she would be the one going, but she knew that if she did, she wouldn’t want to leave, and she was now a bit afraid of what she might find there. She wasn’t upset
she wasn’t mad
at least not at the moment, she was just
confused.
********************
Y/n felt like she was numb at that point, only focusing on what they had to say about the case and following them around, barely saying anything. She was hoping that she’d wake up from this nightmare, that maybe, just maybe, everything was in her head, that she was actually asleep, and this would end soon. For a moment, she tried to go and clear her mind for a bit, deciding that Penelope could help at least a little bit, but as she walked to her office, she heard her talking and then she figured out what she was doing. She tried to swallow back her tears as she walked to her, offering a small as she turned on her chair.
“Hey, sweet girl.” Penelope said softly as she offered a small smile.
“Hi.” Y/n smiled softly and crossed her arms. “So
we figured out if Emily had a boyfriend, huh?” She chuckled softly.
Penelope nodded as she smiled. “I always thought you guys looked cute. I’m happy you’re actually a couple.”
Y/n smiled softly as she nodded. “Thanks.” She cleared her throat. “Any luck with the phone numbers?”
Penelope shook her head. “No
I’ve left a message in all of them.”
Y/n nodded as she sighed. “Do you think I could uh
could you
give me at least one to try it out?”
Penelope smiled as she turned her chair and wrote down one of the phone numbers, and then turned to look at y/n, handing her the post it. “I just tried this one, is the last one I found.”
Y/n grabbed it and stared at it for a moment, smiling softly as she looked back at Penelope. “Thanks, P.” She nodded before she left.
Y/n looked around the hallway and noticed no one was there, so she for her phone out and dialed the number. She bit her lip softly as she waited, part of her hoping that she’d answer and the other part just waiting to be sent to voicemail. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she heard the voicemail tone. “Hey Em
it’s me, y/n. Uh
Penelope gave me this number, we’re not even sure if you have it anymore or not
” she huffed a chuckle. “
I don’t even know what to say. I just want you to know that
I love you. I won’t ever stop doing that.” She sniffled, biting her lip softly as she tried to swallow back her sobs. “Just come back, Emily
please. We can fix this together. I just need you back with me.” She let out sobs as she looked shook her head. “Come back to me.” She sighed as she ended the voicemail and closed her phone, putting it back in her pocket.
Emily sighed as she closed her eyes for a moment. She was exhausted, she was tired, she wanted this whole thing to end, and the worst thing about this, was that she had no idea how this would end. She wanted to cry, she wanted to scream, she felt helpless but she knew she had a reason and purpose, she needed to put an end to this; he wasn’t going to win, not as long as Emily could stop him. She looked down at her phone and furrowed her brows as she noticed two voicemails. Her heart stopped for a second as she heard Penelope’s voice, her eyes getting teary. She hated so much that she was doing this to them, she knew maybe they’d hate her, but she was doing this for them.
She opened the last voicemail and she felt her heart sank, for a moment, her whole world had stopped. It was y/n. She was sure Penelope had given her the phone number. She closed her eyes as she felt l tears rolling down her cheeks. She never meant to hurt y/n like this, she never wanted to lie to her, she never meant to hide this from them, but she thought she’d be able to live with it and that nothing would ever happen, he’d stay in jail forever and no one in her life would know about it. But she was wrong. And she hated it. She wanted to drive back to her lover, hold her and kiss her, but she had to protect her, she had to protect her family.
“I love you
I’m sorry.” Emily whispered softly before she turned off her phone and took a deep breath.
********************
The whole ride to the Warehouse, y/n tried to keep her head clear, thinking that they would be able to find Emily and that this whole thing would finally end, that she’d be able to bring her home and both of them would work on this together. For a moment, as she heard more and more about Emily’s undercover and Ian, she felt herself getting angry at the whole situation. It was clear everyone was upset at the thought of Emily getting involved with someone like him, and she was not gonna lie, it upset her too, but then all she could think about was Emily; was she okay? Was she safe? Y/n knew Emily was a fighter, she could protect herself, but what if Ian had hurt her badly? She couldn’t help the negative thoughts that filled her mind. She grabbed onto her necklace and kissed it, trying to swallow back her tears. She flinched a bit as she felt a hand on her shoulder, and she turned to look at Derek, who offered a small smile.
Y/n decided she’d go in with Derek, she followed them around and her heart started racing as she walked through the warehouse. For a moment, she tried to think that this was just another victim, she wanted to try to concentrate the best she could and not lose her posture. She could almost hear Strauss yelling at her for getting involved even though she knew she should’ve stayed behind. When the lights went out, she felt like she was in a nightmare, following Derek as she kept looking around us, making sure to not miss any door or room. At some point, Derek told y/n to go first to have her back, and just as she walked into the very end of the warehouse, her heart dropped at the sight of Emily on the floor
bleeding.
“Emily!” Y/n dropped to her knees and placed her gun on the floor. “Derek, call an ambulance!” She placed her hand on Emily’s and looked at her, tears rolling down her cheeks. “Emily? Em
please answer me. I’m here.” She said almost in a whisper.
Emily opened her eyes weakly and stared back at y/n. “Y/n?” She whispered weakly.
Y/n nodded and smiled through her tears. “Yes. It’s me. I’m here.” She placed her hand on Emily’s cheek, stroking it softly. “C’mon, baby. I need you to stay with me, help is coming.”
Emily’s breathing was weak, she tried to keep her eyes opened to look at her lover, but it was becoming harder. “Love
I’m
msorry.”
“Help! Please!” Y/n turned to look at Derek with tears in her eyes and then went back to Emily. “No, Em. I know why you did this. I love you, okay? I’m not mad, I’m not upset. I’m here. Just please, please stay with me. I need you, my love. Please.” She cried out as she leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Please, Em
”
“I
love you.” Emily breathed out and closed her eyes.
“Emily! Please! Hurry up!” Y/n looked down at her and sobbed. “Emily!”
The time stopped as y/n kept yelling Emily’s name, and as she felt Derek’s hands on her trying to pull her back, y/n kept yelling and trying to get away from Derek. The paramedics arrived and were all over Emily, y/n could only feel Derek’s arms wrapped around her trying to stop her from moving, and y/n could not do anything else than let herself cry and scream in Derek’s arms. This was not happening. This was not supposed to happen. At some point she felt Derek picking her up and helping her walk so they could follow the ambulance, y/n was sobbing uncontrollably so they didn’t let her go in the ambulance with her.
The whole way to the hospital seemed like a movie, y/n felt like she was not there, she was just numb, and she had gone completely quiet. She could feel JJ and Derek holding her, but she only sat there, her eyes glued to the ambulance in front of them. And then, as if she had transported, she was in the visitors lounge with the whole team. She didn’t know when or how they had all arrived there, even Penelope. She had sat down alone, only staring down at her hands as she fidgeted with her fingers. She thought that she had ran out of tears because none were coming out of her eyes, she could feel her head throbbing, her eyes were swollen and her whole body was trembling. If this is a nightmare, just wake up. Wake up now. She kept repeating in her head over and over again. In the corner of her eye, she saw a figure moving, making her turn her face to find JJ and she stood up rapidly to walk to JJ.
“JJ?” Y/n asked in a whisper as she walked to her. She furrowed her brows when she didn’t say anything. “JJ
say something.” She made a pause and shook her head as there was still silence coming from JJ.
“No
” Penelope whispered softly, her voice breaking.
“Say something!” Y/n’s bottom lip trembled as she sobbed quietly. “Please
”
“She never made it off the table.” JJ said softly, but rapidly, as if she had pushed herself from saying those words.
Y/n felt her like time stopped once again as JJ’s words kept replying in her mind. She could hear Penelope and Spencer crying, she could hear them in the background, but all she could do was sit back down, just staring into nothing as her mind processed JJ’s words. She felt someone touching her shoulder, but she couldn’t make up the words that were coming out of their mouth, her mind had shut down entirely and her body couldn’t react. At some point she felt something wet on her face and she processed in her mind that she was crying and then her mind registered where she was. She looked up and found Penelope by her side, wrapping her arms around her and that’s when she felt her whole body giving up and she started sobbing again, screaming loudly as Penelope tightened her grip on her. She was living in the nightmare.
********************
“I really wish you would’ve told me, Em
I could’ve probably helped you.” Y/n whispered softly, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I miss you terribly.” She sobbed quietly.
“Y/n?” Derek asked softly as she stood beside her.
Y/n cleared her throat as she smiled sadly. “She gave me her necklace. The day before, she came to my apartment at two a.m. I guess she thought that
maybe if she went that late, maybe they wouldn’t be watching her or something.” She shrugged softly as she looked down at the grave. “She seemed so
worried but she was reassuring me that she was okay.” She huffed a chuckle. “I knew she was not, but I didn’t push. I let her have control. She kissed me and left.” She shook her head as more tears rolled down her cheeks. “I should’ve pushed.”
“We know she wouldn’t have told you anything anyway.” Derek sighed. “She wanted to protect us. Protect you.”
Y/n nodded. “I hate her for that.” She shook her head. “I should be upset that she didn’t tell me anything, that she got involved with him.” She sighed. “But I’m upset that she let this happen and I couldn’t be there to save her.”
Derek nodded. “We did what we could.”
Y/n looked up at Derek as she cried. “Did we?” She cried out.
Derek stared at her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her to him and kissing her forehead softly. “I’m sorry for how I spoke to you.”
“I forgive you.” Y/n whispered softly as she rested her head against his shoulder. “I’m sorry too.”
Derek shook his head. “We’re good, princess. And I’m here.”
Y/n nodded. “I know. I’m here too.” She sighed as she let more tears roll down her cheeks.
“So
wanna tell me how it all began?” Derek grinned as he looked down at y/n.
Y/n huffed a chuckle as she wiped her tears. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“I do too.”
Y/n turned to look at Penelope and smiled softly. “You’re still here.”
Penelope smiled through her tears. “I didn’t want to leave you, sweet cheeks.”
Y/n smiled as she extended her hand for Penelope to take it. She then looked back at the grave and smiled. “I think Emily would love for me to tell you guys about how it all started.” She nodded softly as she knelt down and sat on the grass, followed by Penelope and Derek.

I love when platonic love and romantic love is so blurred that it doesn’t even matter anymore. All that matters is the devotion that’s there, the unwavering devotion. — @drizzledrawings (+ insp from @eagans)
