Thought I could put on Mad Max: Fury Road in the background while I drew something else, but it did immediately turn into Mad Max: Fury Road fanart.

Wide awake because I can't stop thinking about how Furiosa saved Max from falling by catching him with her prosthetic arm, and because of the weight and her wound, she would have dropped him were the arm not a prosthesis strapped to her torso. And she didn't grab him by the leg, she caught him by the leg brace around his left knee, and the hold likely wouldn't have worked if not for the brace; later, Max saves her life.

The two most badass characters in what has been lauded as "one of the greatest action films ever made" only survive because of their mutual disabilities.

yeah I tried to be good and *not* spend those 2 hours on watching Fury Road, and technically I didn't cuz I only listened to it while drawing this! I wanted to do a crosshatching exercise and took the opportunity to draw a frame from the movie, even though it's techncially two frames meshed together cuz the War Boys never actually point all at the same time while showing their faces.

Aaaand I am not posting this to my art blog cuz this is not fanart polished and presented for your consumption, this is me rambling about stuff while I show you a pretty picture I made for fun. Feels somehow less performative if I post it here on my personal blog than over at my art blog, and I wasn't even aware how much of a performance that actually was. I mean, it's fun in some ways, but I also tightly control what I post there, so perhaps that's the wrong approach to engage with fandom. idk, will have to think on that. This is me trying to figure it out until May when Furiosa hits cinemas and i HOPE fandom explodes again in a whirlwind of fire and gasoline (also on fire).

Back in 2015 I wanted to draw All The Film Stills from mmfr, and now I finally got to start on that.

For the nerds of you out there: Yeah, the gunner in the front is Morsov, Ace is in the far back looking over his shoulder. Also notice the kid in the mid ground who's a bit slow on the uptake lmao

i love love love how we spend the entirety of mad max fury road watching furiosa and the wives trying to escape from their circumstances into a promised land only to be confronted with the fact that such a place doesn't exist and realize that they have to turn back to where they were and make it better. that a truly perfect place may never exist but that only means they have to try to make the best of what they already have in their reach, both for their own sakes and for everyone else that was left behind. aughhh

mad max: fury road says that when stripped down to its basic parts, the world is run by rich old men who control the production of weapons, oil, and water and food resources. these old men willingly hold most of the world in artificial poverty and take luxury as their right. they regard women as their property. they use sincere religious sentiment to further their selfish aims. they killed the world.

furiosa wants to fight back: she wants to escape to the green place, the utopia of childhood. but no matter what she and the wives sacrifice or how far they search, the earth is sour. the old men poisoned the soil with their bombs and their chemicals. there is no homeland outside of the systems these old men have dominated and these women have inhabited, the system furiosa has learned and perpetuated and rejected. their only option is to go back, to kill the old men and take their place in the tower where decisions are made.

can they hold the citadel, the ones who plant seeds instead of bombs? can they deradicalize the religious soldiers and create a more equitable society? can something grow in sour soil after all? we will never know. we leave our change-makers moving up into the seat of power. but as long as they rise, we can hold on to an ambiguous moment of hope.
