Bottomless Feelings Brunch
gabbyhunter:
As the pain killers wore off, so did the high she so graciously accepted. The redhead did the best she could not to think about the pain too much, and did her best to distract herself especially since she had no idea when he'd be showing up with her pills. She was painfully independent, even if it meant making life twenty times more difficult for herself and probably even him. Gabby showered the best she could with her one armed abilities, she forgot how difficult it was to function while injured, granted the last time also wasn't her fault but she'll save herself that trip down memory lane. The sun was bleeding through her shades and she just about kissed him when he walked through the front door holding her pain pills. Holding his coffee in her one hand she raised it slightly with a pained smile, "I'll trade you if you rush, I'll even throw in the breakfast sandwich I bought you"
It still felt unreal walking up to her apartment again. In the last week he had been here more times than he had ever been to her place before. Years of friendship had multiplied in the last week, in more ways than one. As unreal as it felt it also felt like the most natural thing in the world to be there, holding her breakfast and her medications. Seeing her happy and smiling made his heart do a thing and in his head he tried to remind himself it was still Gabby and he needed to calm the fuck down. "You look like you feel better." Stepping into her apartment gingerly he walked towards the kitchen to put things out. There were still lines he felt between them and he didn't wanna overstep anything. He didn't wanna treat her place like it was his too, he was still a guest here. Once the array of breakfast items that included turkey sausage, biscuits, grits, scrambled eggs, and coffee were laid out on her counter he turned to find her already reading the label of her medication.

Tracking his every movement she couldn't stop the dumb smile that appeared on her face when he leaned down, it wasn't anything he'd ever done before but she wasn't about to take it for granted. "Please get sleep too, you need all the beauty rest you can get" Gabby said as her good hand reached around for a blanket and tangled herself with it as much as she could. "Alright Idiot 1, I'll see you in the morning, Don't go hurting your brain either"
A smirk kept across his face that was a constant when he was in the presence of the redhead. Somehow their entire interaction today felt new and old all at the same time. Which made all his anxiety kind of die down and let him breath, knowing that its not going to change too much of their relationship. "Okay fine, I'll see you in the morning, I'll let you sleep in a little." At the door he looked back at her as she laid on the sofa with her things and smiled at her, wanting to give a greeting but knowing the words were too soon or too much for the moment. So he settled on, "See ya Red."

The redhead rubbed her forehead softly, avoiding the scraps as best as she could. They needed to work this through fully, and she should be sober for it- her therapist would thank for it later. “Will you get my medicine on your way back in?” Gabby asked watching him carefully before pouting a bit, “You know I am sorry for ruining your grand romantic plan”
Laughing he shook his head at her, and started to get off the couch. He leaned down and kissed the top of her head, "I should have known better to plan anything. We always end up going completely off script. But yes I'll get your meds and I'll be here in the morning. I'll bring breakfast so don't worry yourself with anything okay. Just go get some rest." He started to walk out, "Also don't think too hard, your head can't take that right now. You could have a concussionor something and I don't want you making it worse by doing something dumb like thinking."

When he sat across from her she couldn’t ignore the flash of pain it caused her, they came so far only to come back to this. It wasn’t even that big of a deal, but it made her feel like they got two steps ahead only to go four back. “I should ask you not to yell at me more” she joked softly as her head fell back to rest along the edge of the couch. The conversation about going back into the field had to happen, but she knew it wouldn’t be pretty. Her good hand picked at the couch, pulling at the same string, “It’s a sad story Im not sure it’s even worth it” She murmured before looking at him with a small displeased look as he mentioned being mad at her. “So like…where does this leave us?” Gabby questioned softly as she watched him, she couldn’t see them instantly jumping into boyfriend girlfriend talk but she needed to know if stood where she did, exclusivity at least.
This was the exact conversation he had gone on a trip to run away from. This was everything he wanted and everything that scared him in a single question with a single girl with a single look on her face. He sighed and looked at her, "This leaves us, with you taking a nap to sleep off the drugs they gave you and me going home for the first time in almost a week to take a proper shower. Then coming back and checking on you." He didn't want to leave her hanging, he knew she wanted answers, and he was ready to give them to her. But he also wanted this moment to be something they could talk about in sober terms without other influences on their minds.

The walk to the couch felt miles long and she let out a grunt as she sat down. The pain meds helped for sure but this was something she almost didn’t want him to see, it was a painful reminder of how the night shouldn’t have gone. she should have been here, making fun of his apology and accepting the flowers he probably brought. Her eyes snapped back to him as she took the water taking a small sip trying to wet her lips, “I probably won’t eat for a bit the morphine is still strong, makes me nauseous” she admitted as she watched him stand there, there was so much she wanted to say to help. “No meds until tomorrow i’ll have to pick them up” gabby said as she tried to figure out how the recovery time was going to go. “Are you going to yell at me when i feel better?” she asked carefully as she looked at him, “are we okay?”
Sighing at her, he sits down in the chair across from her. Even though he had wanted to sit next to her and be able to comfort her, they still really had resolved anything so he felt like he was going to overwhelm her or cross a line. "Those are two very different questions. I promise I won't yell at you, but when you feel better I do really want to talk about why you went back to the field." There was a weak smile on his face after the serious comment he had made, "But yes I hope we are okay. Whatever happened today with the hospital has nothing to do with everything else we have to talk about. And it didn't change the conversation I still want to have. You being the field scares the shit out of me and I'm mad at you, but it doesn't alter anything." He didn't know much of what else to say. He wanted to be able to soothe her and make her worries go away. He wanted her to know that he wasn't Justin and that her life was her life no matter what and she could do whatever she pleased with it. But he was a man of little words outside the ones he wrote.

Gabby was beaming at him, so high off her pain meds she was sure she’d be embarrassed the following day. When they pulled into her complex she reached across her sling to open his door using the hood as leverage to get out and she wasn’t even sure how she made it as far as she did without throwing up. “Such a gentleman” she teased softly as Hera greeted them, “hi baby, i’m so sorry mama’s late” she whispered as she tried to kick off her shoes, using the wall for leverage. “Bathroom actually Im about to throw up” she admitted and used his shoulder to hold herself up as she passed right by him to her downstairs bathroom. Once it passed she unlocked the door, giving him a small weak smile “didn’t wanna puke in your car” she admitted before making grabby hands at her fridge “grab me a water? please?”
He nodded, his eyes in a bit of a loss. The man wasn't sure how he was going to take care of someone in general, but definitely not someone with the sassy independence that Gabby had. Max helped her over to the couch and then got her a water as she situated herself. Coming back he stood next to the sofa and looked at her. "Do you need anything? They didn't give you any more meds to take did they? Or should you try to eat?"

Gabby was watching him carefully, her mind might be mush but he was always someone she paid attention to. A smile appeared on her face as it all rounded up and clicked in his mind, “Yes the green dress” she said with a laugh before giving him a half hearted shrug the best way she could with a sling. “You aren’t hard to distract” Gabby said softly giving him a wide smile, even if her face was all scratched up she really didn’t care. “I may be horrible at flirting but I know my strengths”
He wanted to moan out the words that she definitely did, and that she also knew his weakness. But composure was what he needed in that moment, and he didn't want to overwhelm either of them in the moment. They finally pulled into her complex and he turned the car off. The man started to get out the car with the intention of helping her out, but he should have known her stubborn ass thought she was fine and got out of the car alone. "Fuck Gabs, calm down. Let me help you up the stairs at least." He tried to fetch her things, and the paperwork, before she was already climbing the stairs on her own. They reached to the door and immediately was greeted by her cat. The man placed all her stuff on the counter near the door and watched her pet and hold the tabby. "You need to lay down let's move this reunion to the couch or your room."

Time around her really wasn’t making sense, her mind so concerned with pain and the drugs numbing it, she was fairly certain she was too stupid to think correctly. Her head tilted to the side to meet his gaze again, hearing him say it made her smile more than she intended before she looked back at the road. “I was going to tell you” she muttered adjusting her sling, “The night i planned to tell you we got…preoccupied”
For some reason that angered him even more, and today was not a day he wanted to yell at her. "You mean," he started attempting to keep his voice under control, "that you were planning on telling me when we were at that work party I had invited you to? While you were wearing that green dress that basically was nothing but a second layer of skin?" Realizing that she had intended on trying to distract him with her body while telling her the terrible news, he looked over at her with a sly face. "You're a bloody temptress aren't you?"

the drugs weren't helping, it was making her way more stupid than normal, and sick, but if she threw up in his car she'd never hear the end of it. this was all so new to them, and if she wasn't in pain and high right now it'd probably be lovely but watching him try to process the feelings they both just previously side handed it made her laugh. the deflection was not well hidden and it made her roll her eyes, "i know i already said that, idiot" she said giving him a smirk before squinting her eyes at him,"it's okay i'll pretend like i don't know you love me" she said as she closed her eyes as leaned her head back, "wouldn't wanna make you feel like you were sharing a feeling" she said with a soft smile as she peeked an eye at him to see his reaction.
The motion of rolling his eyes in her direction was something that was so common, his body almost did it on instinct now. The drama of it was higher than normal just now as his reaction to her words and attitude. "You can know that I love you, and I am fine with sharing a feeling. I was planning on sharing all of them with you before you decided to be a stupid ass and wind up in the hospital." He looked at her again, still concerned she wasn't alright and they should have stayed in the hospital. "Which by the way, don't think cause we have other things to talk about that I am just going to ignore the fact you put yourself back in the field. We are definitely going to talk about that too."

With a Twist
Max had googled probably a dozen different times ideas for dates. All of them seemed cringy and pathetic, but he knew that he had to do something different than his usual bullshit with Gabby. He didn’t want to just take her out to fancy shows or fancy meals cause even though she deserved that, it was shallow. It was something he had done for all the women he had tried to sleep with before, back when he didn’t really know them and just wanted to impress them. But now he knew the girl he was sleeping with, and exactly how to impress her. Knowing her made the whole act of dating somehow easier and worse at the same time. He was in unknown territory now, wanting to actually try to plan a date. Hince the embarrassing amount of googling he had done.
Finally it was Friday, the day he had told her to free her schedule for. She wasn’t expecting much and he knew it, normally they had just hung out at either’s places, eat, drank, and vent about their busy weeks. Now that she was in the field and since he worked in news, their hours sometimes missed each other and so it was hard to see each other. Sure they communicated through texts and short calls through the week, but he did miss spending actual time with her. Both of them did try to make sure one night a week they cleared their schedule to do something together. Even if they were so tired from their work weeks that it was just sitting around in each other’s company. But tonight he wanted to try, and try he did.
“So where are we going?” She asked as they sat in his car heading out of her complex. Both were dressed in something simple, she had asked dress code earlier. He knew that telling her something casual had thrown her off already, considering his normal date ideas. “You really don’t know what surprise means do you?” he said rolling his eyes. Their mocking hadn’t stopped at all when they started dating, only changed. She sat in her chair and huffed at him while he cracked a smile. Eventually they got to where they were going and she started laughing.
“I never thought you would want to do this?”
“I don’t. But I assumed this would be something you would want to do.” He shrugged, and continued with a more hushed voice, “Maybe it’ll be assuming.”
The couple got into the building, and signed in for their reservation. Hearing the word reservation earned him a chuckle and cocked eyebrow in his direction. But they sat down at their stations next to each other and were offered their first glass of wine.
“I did a lot of googling of these places. This is the only one that included unlimited wine.”
“Have I ever told you I love you?”
He laughed again at her and in a moment of rarity, reached over and grabbed her hand before bringing it to his lips and kissing it. They weren’t big on affection, especially in public. But there were moments where his cold, dead heart became warm because of something she did and he would act on it.
Tonight they were being instructed how to paint a sunset, while servers made sure their wine glasses were never empty. Halfway through Gabby had become very giggling, and he was blushing in her direction regularly. She looked like she was having the time of her life and it honestly made everything worth it. In his head, he decided later he was going to break down the moments of his life that lead him to being the sap he was today.
When the class was done, and the wine had been drank he finally looked at both of their works side by side. The man hadn’t drank much, being too much of a perfectionist and starred at his painting. Sure it looked identical to the one the instructor had done, but it lacked all the emotion that art was suppose to have. But hey, he wasn’t an artist. When he looked over at her, it was a mess. But the most beautiful thing he had seen. Her colors were everywhere in a way that made the sunset look so much more than it the instructors. And she just sat there smiling at it. He went to grab hers and she slapped his hand away, “Hey that’s mine!”
“Yes, and I am hanging it in MY kitchen.”
“No you aren’t! I worked hard on that its going in MY kitchen.”
“Yea well I technically paid for it so its going in mine!” “
“Well if we are going based off who bought something, then I’m taking back that bottle of whiskey I got you for your birthday.”
This shut the man up and he huffed out the word fine. She giggled at him and their banter before standing up and kissing his cheek.
“Thank you Maxipad, this was a lot of fun.”
He smiled down at the girl he was in love with, “You’re welcome. Let’s go home and hang your picture up.”

Hearing him chuckle made her grin softly, as she nodded a bit, “you should be. I was going to make breakfast” she whispered softly as she let her head fall back against his nice seats. thank god she changed, she’d never hear the end of it if she got blood on anything. fighting with him was horrid, while it was a bit of their relationship, actually being angry at him? him upset at her? horrible.
Her eyes drifted to his as it started to fully register what he was saying to her, was he actually admitting to feelings for her? “home” she repeated softly, before looking back to the window. it took a couple minutes before her head was turning to the side to look at him, “so…you love me?” she teased softly watching him as the streetlights passed over his frame.
3 hours ago he would have been completely ready to talk about it, admit it to her, and start something. But now hearing those words come out of her mouth, he instantly felt so unprepared. Discussing his emotions was not something he did normally and with having so many there right now, he wasn't sure how he could face this conversation now. Sure he still felt the same as he did earlier, but now they had fought and his words were lost in his brain.
"Yea, well you love me so..." he smirked in her direction. Deflecting. His favorite hobby.

If Gabby could recall the walk to the car, and the check out process, she was sure it was intense and awkwardly silence, but she had no idea how she even got seated into his car. Everything about this moment was wrong, it should have been sweet and nice, but it wasn’t. She was gross, sweaty and too high to function and the man next to her was putting up with it.
Hearing his confession made her want to scream but the sober part of her knew he was right. Leaning her head back into the seat, she tilted her head to look at him, she’d never seen him like this. “How could I not?” She whispered softly before puffing out a bit of air. “It was rude of me to assume you knew.. I’m sorry” The red head may have muttered the apology, but she knew he heard it. “If it helps I didn’t realize for a bit, I’m the same bit of idiot as you” she said with a small smile before swallowing thickly. “I’m upset with you”
The air in his lungs let out in the sound of a light chuckle as he turned his head still resting on the steering wheel towards her. "I'm upset with me too."
He took a moment to just look at her. Even though she was injured, looked crazy, and he knew she was high as fuck, she was still beautiful. This moment truly made him remember why he treasured her. Their friendship and relationship has always been full of ups and downs and he honestly wouldn't trade it for anything.
"Let's get you home and back to bed. We can talk about how much we both hate and love each other then okay?"

Gabby wasn’t one for hospitals, but each time she was here, she got stronger and stronger pain pills and the situations seem to keep increasing in danger. Last time she stood, arguing in a hospital room it was with Justin, and now she was doing it with Max, and for a few moments she wondered if she was the problem but as he talked and talked her mind came back from space. The red head watched him carefully taking in his body language, she couldn’t imagine how the nurse by the door felt, but she also didn’t care, it took them years to have this conversation. The medicine was working its way through her body, blocking pain receptors and she adjusted her sling a bit as she grabbed her work book bag from the side chair and moved to hold it out to him so they could put the papers away.
“I’m the idiot?” She questioned staring at him, her voice softer but didn’t lack the anger she was radiating. “don’t act like you didn’t already know.” Her love for him was so clear, were they both just incredibly dense? “I can feel every molecule in my body” Gabby said as she half handed her bag to him. “You ghosted me after preaching about how horrible it was! I woke up alone, after you kissed that other girl!” She started before turning to the nurse, “Let’s go”. She said moving to grab his upper arm, the pain meds may be amazing, yet still made her a bit uneasy on her feet.
Max was honestly too stunned to say much of anything at the moment. He just kind of followed Gabby as they walked around the hospital towards the exit. Trying to guide her to where his car was parked, she was being fucking stubborn and acting like she already knew. So a few frustrating and silent moments later they were both in the car and buckled. It was that moment he let out a big sign and leaned his head against his steering, the keys still not even in the ignition.
“Gabby, of course I didn’t know. How was I suppose to know that you had feelings for me? After everything we’ve been through I had kind of gotten use to the idea that we were never going to happen. I had stopped trying to look at the signs and convince myself that you felt any fraction of what I felt for you.” The man was literally baring his soul to her right now, in a parking lot, while she was high as a kite.

The groan that left her as he spoke made her roll her eyes. Her eyes stayed on his as they both seemed to move to lean closer to each other, tensions getting her again. She mimicked him calling her stubborn before watching him, this was the dumbest place they’ve ever argued but if she was going to be upset she might as well be high on hospital grade pain killers for it.
Sitting up she moved to turn more towards him and nearly yanked the IV out herself, he was half out of his chair and she wanted to grab him and shake sense into him. “I told you I loved you and you said nothing!” She half shouted back as she watched him, “Nothing! I got nothing from you, all you had to do was tell me you needed time! You just dipped, no note, no text, I asked for the smallest crumb, I spent three days thinking you regretted everything” Gabby’s head whipped around as the nurse entered the room again, moving to take her IV out and hand them both paperwork, which was just stupid considering how high she was. The second she stood up she was handing him her papers, “don’t lose these”
“To be fair, you didn’t tell me you loved me til day three. And the second you did I felt so fucking guilty for thinking you didn’t before and for running away. I knew in that moment I couldn’t just text you or call you back. That would have been too insignificant. So I immediately got back in my car and drove to you. But in true Gabby fashion, the second I got there to talk through this I get a call that you’re in the fucking hospital because you decided to be a fucking idiot!” The words came out of him like fire and he didn’t mean it the way it sounded. But that’s how it always is with Gabby. Nothing ever goes as planned. They never have been able to communicate or go through things smoothly, their fights and conversations always derail in ways that he never thought they would. And never in years would he have envisioned that they would be having this conversation in public, in a hospital room, in front of a nurse.
The redhead handed him some shit and he watched her stubble around the room trying to get her shit together so they could leave. He just stood, his feet planted in the same spot, seething at her but also wanting to hold her and cry and care.

Gabby watched him as she gave him a look before nodding her head, “yeah no internal bleeding this time, so I get to go home with a doctors note and time off of work” She admitted before giving him a shrug. When the nurse came running in she gave a small apologetic smile, she nodded along as they told her it’d be a couple minutes before wandering out. Cringing a bit she dropped the button onto the bed and looked back at him as she moved to lay back down. “I do! I have a list myself, and I wanna see if they match up” she said as she adjusted her sling, “Bullet point one; you ignored me for three days, and didn’t even text back!”
“Bullet point one back at you, you signed up to go back into the field and didn’t tell me.” He spat the words back at her, rising a little further on the seat to match where she was sitting. Their eyes starring at each other with enough intensity it could kill either of them. He knew she was waiting for him to explain himself and part of him wanted to, but another part thought this was really not the time or place to be doing this here. “You’re so fucking stubborn, making us do this here. But I know you won’t let this go. So fuck it, let’s do this. Here. With you high on whatever the fuck.”
“Yes.” He half-shouted, “I didn’t text you back for three days. But I needed time to process what happened. I never thought what we did was going to happen, and I definitely didn’t think it was going to happen the way it did. So I needed to go and collect my thoughts. I was going to come back. I always planned on coming back. But then you called me your best friend and it punched me in the gut so I stayed away longer.” All his words were in a half scream at her, as he wanted to yell at her, but he didn’t want anyone to come in and think there was something wrong. “I was actually on your fucking doorstep with your boss called me.”
