The Murder Mystery Arc tends to get overlooked a lot of the time, but I think it's definitely the one where we first get a good look at that shift in the connection between Ciel and Sebastian.

It is the first time where Sebastian is really allowed any leeway, being trusted by Ciel to act to his benefit by his own devices, put into a situation where he cannot be directly controlled by his master, and I think that his success in accomplishing the task certainly opened the path for Ciel's continued trust in his abilities and loyalty for the future.

Do they still actively work to inconvenience each other along the way? Of course, but even to an outsider - because we must remember, the entirety of the arc is presented to us from the perspective of Arthur - it is clear that these acts are not outright malicious, not from either one of them. It is like more of a game, or a private joke between the two of them that the rest of the world isn't privy to; a conversation held in a different language than that which their guests are able to speak.

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003's homunculi being repelled by the inert human remains of the people they used to be is probably the coolest and most elegant new riff one can take on the classic vampire "repelled by Christian symbols and relics" weakness.

It doesn't require defining Christianity as the one objectively true religion, or applying rules of Christian exorcism to non-Christian religions, or result in comedic rules-lawyering situations like "my belief in communism/veganism/etc lets me repel vampires with symbols of such things." I mean, if funny is what you're going for, that's fine... but it's not a good atheistic/agnostic solution for actual horror.

Lust supernaturally flinching when Scar brandishes a locket containing the hair of the dead woman she so desperately wants to return to being, though? It's a double edged horror. It's a sign that she's fundamentally, deeply, wrong, a crime against some unspoken rule of nature. For a human, it's evidence enough that a homunculus is just a blasphemous monster wearing a dead person's face; for a homunculus, it's a reminder that your current existence is tainted and broken, a punch in the face if you do identify with the human you were made to revive. It carries the a similar sense of pain as Mina Murray finding that holy things hurt her, and that the Almighty God she worships shuns her now.
