March 3, 2022 around noon (catching up)
Also: latest news out of ukr/rus:
-h&m and ikea are halting operations in Russia (apple and google have done some of this, as well as some tech/engineering firms like oracle
-French president and Putin had a phone conversation this morning that was unproductive. No headway made by the French, Putin saying that he will take all of Ukraine no matter way basically
-the last independent news station closed today in Russia, a lot of foreigners and Russians (especially journalists) alike are leaving the country rn because it appears likely that martial law will be put in place there
-Georgia and Moldova have applied for EU membership after UKR did a few days ago

Roundup of latest news:
Ukraine has officially signed an application to join the EU (one day after the head of the EU said they wanted Ukraine in) unsure how fast-tracked this could be.
Lots of arms and ammunition are getting delivered to Ukraine from EU, other Euro countries, US, Canada, Japan, and Australia now.
Switzerland is sanctioning some banks (which is incredible because they have a lot of the banking there AND they always try to stay neutral. They did in WWII).
Russian banks are starting to run out of money, the ruble was down 40% this morning, and I think they might be closing trading in Moscow (the Russians doing this) until at least March 5.
Just after agreeing to peace talks, Putin put Russian nuclear defense at ‘high alert’ (which, what the fuck dude). There’s I think 2 more levels/stages above this tho. Not great and is being widely condemned.
Ukraine is forming foreign legions, similar to what happened during the Spanish civil war in the 30s. Basically allows foreigners to fight if they want.
One of the cities near the border with Russia was hit with cluster bombs. Which are outlawed and are yet another war crime.
UN Gen Assembly meeting now to vote on condemning russia/calling for an end to Russian aggression.

NATO press conference 25/2/2022
Condemned the invasion, included Belarus.
Telling Russians that the "Kremlin's war" will not be good for them in general (reputation, future, etc - not a threatening thing)
NATO activated defense plans yesterday. Sea, land, air.
US, Canada, and Euro allies have deployed to the eastern NATO countries. Over a 100 planes, over 120+ ships into Med.
Have to continue support to Ukraine. Kremlin trying to decrease NATO, so must do opposite. Includes Georgia (and Moldova? said way too fast).
No security in Europe without "strong transatlantic bond"
Al Jazeera first. Qs:How fearful are you to the possible fall of Kyiv. How long can the Ukraine gov. last? At what point do we see NATO get involved?
A: Full scale invasion into Ukraine. See that they're going towards Kyiv. Ukraine is fighting bravely and are "actually able to inflict damage" (rude, but okay). Going to continue military, financial (maybe also medical) support.
National press agency of Ukraine: Qs: Does NATo preserve its desire to support Ukraine with defense equipment. Particularly anti-aircraft support
A: Some allies have said they would give support, including anti-aircraft. (Not a clear answer.)
NBC Qs: Worried about Russian attacks affecting NATO countries indirectly - at what point will NATO act?
A: "Attack on one will be regarded as an attack on all". Don't want accidents. On cyber, could activate Art. 5, but never has before. Won't comment on exactly what would activate it because we never do (security/defense reasons I bet).
NPR: Q about more details on the support and how/when it would get there.
A: Talking about Russian demands, how they are ridiculous and are taking things seriously. Deploying defense force for the first time. Already part of the standing troops. (Additional question - where are the troops coming from?) US but also Europe. France currently leading this.
AP, Q: VJTF can only go to one place. Where might you send it, is there a particular weakness you've identified?
A:Increased the capability of the VJTF and there are more elements. US, UK have increased readiness of forces that are associated to NATO. Not deploying the whole force, has increased since 2014 (40,000+ troops).
TV2 Norway Q: How can these forces be deployed?
A: Multiple ways, sea and air seem close. Land can be deployed in days, but some are already close.
? Q: Russia's actions are flagrant against NATO-Russia founding agreement (???). Does NATO consider the NATO Russia Founding Act obsolete. Or are they still bound or still fear-bound?
A: Russia has walked away. The act has been constantly violated since 2014, and this is further violated with this full fledged violation. Russia shows no respect for this. This is a founding act, and one does not respect it, then the agreement doesn't work.
Fox (ugh) Q: Kyiv could fall in the next day or two? What about neutrality as a way for peace?
A: *states the current situation* Goal is to change the government of Ukraine. Won't speculate but Ukrainian forces are showing huge courage against Russian forces. Potential talks between UKR and Russia - this is for UKR government to decide. Russia needs to stop the attack and withdraw their forces and cease the attacks on UKR. That's the easiest and fastest way to peace. (It's on Russia to stop)
Q: You've already evaluated risk to NATO from Russia. What is the potential end goal of Russia. You have security of 1bn people of NATO, if there is a genuine threat that all member states are committed to defend NATO?
A: Strong message of unity in the chamber, in words and deeds. Calling on Russia to stop, withdraw forces. Also agreed to provide support to UKR and to strengthen forces in the alliance. Defensive presence in the east. Increasing to prevent a conflict, not cause one. "One for all, all for one". This is what prevents a conflict for NATO allies and for 1bn people. This is why we're deploying more troops. Make sure there's no chance to misunderstand that NATO will defend itself.
German news (I think?): Turkey could close Bosphorus - was that talked about. Lithuania saying that if we lose Ukraine, NATO will be next.
A: Bosphorus not discussed. reiterated support to Ukraine and NATO will protect itself.

i watched the whole UNSC meeting last night and the surrealness (surreality?) of getting a news update from CNN that Putin had basically declared war and UN ambassadors were giving speeches about diplomacy. I had actual goosebumps when the Ukrainian ambassador started talking.

I promise you, I beg of you all, shutting the fuck up and stepping away from social media to actually educate yourself about a crisis event from reputable sources will always be SO much more productive than blindly reblogging/retweeting fearmongering misinformation-riddled posts and literal military donation links from anonymous people on the internet.

TO UKRAINIAN FRIENDS
If you are looking for an emergency exit from Ukraine, Poland will open EIGHT safety points on the border with Ukraine (you will get warm food, medical help and from there you will be guided to safety) in two of our voivodeships: lubuskie and podkarpackie. It is confirmed by the Polish Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Paweł Szefernaker.

Very important update: Russians are protesting.
They had protest on the streets against Putin and his actions, and are begging the world for forgiveness. One and a half thousand people got arrested.
They don't want this war as much as everyone else.
