Question for Tom Sloan
What the first job that you really loved and how did you get it?
The first proper job I got was shooting a campaign for UEFA on women's football ! The idea was to make women's football the most popular sport for women by 2020 ? I was shooting along side a TV commercial. It was a wicked brief and had come about because of my personal work on British youth. I was flown around Europe documenting different aspects of women's football ! Street ball , pro level it was fun and I still love some of the pictures to this day ! It was mixture of action sport with real portraits and caught moments of Joy !
Who was the first stylist you really clicked with?
The first stylist I really clicked with and the first person to give me a chance was Elgar Johnson at GQ style. He’d seen my personal work on British youth and gave me my first proper editorial, 12 pages for GQ style. The brief was perfect ! A new model agency had emerged out of Manchester called Brother. It was a street cast agency, casting local real lads. We went to manchester to shoot a casting style story. We rented a studio and shot them on the streets of inner Manchester !
Do you think film adds atmosphere to the shoot?
I love film but do not use it any more ! I actually don't care too much for the debate on digital vs film etc. I rather be much more concerned in my subject and what I’m shooting not how I’m shooting it. I think film does look beautiful and when shot and developed wel, itl does have a stunning quality ! but in a commercial world I certainly find digital a better tool ! I would not have created certain images with out digital it allows on not explore more freely.
Is there one camera you should know well?
I own a medium format and DSLR I guess I know them pretty well particularly my Canon DSLR. I use it pretty fluidly, its the camera I use when I need to move around and capture quickly. My answer would be Yes you should be quick and comfortable with your camera.
Do you think using an agent is beneficial?
For me an Agent was a game changer I do believe it be of massive benefit. It means you are not just working to promote you ! You have another person or team helping that process. Photography is a very competitive industry so Im of the thinking the more help the better ! A good agent understands you’re work and will put you and you’re work underneath the right people to help you get the right kind of commissions. They also negotiate all the fees etc which leaves you to work on the creative rather than getting bogged down with figures etc.
What is your thread through your work?
Youth has always been an underlying thread in my work ! Its where I began, shooting candid pictures of British Youth all around the country. Ive picked up commissions from fashion and advertising brands of the back of this work. I am currently working on a project on brotherhood, its about 4 brothers who live on a farm in Wiltshire.
How did you find the transition from uni to work?
The transition for me was a long one to me actually getting commissioned. I worked for several years as an assistant to various photographers, that was my job rather than taking pictures. I was looking after the photographer in terms of lighting, planning shoots, traveling, dealing with post production and any other general admin etc. To this day I think very important to assist as a part of becoming a photographer.
What preparation do you do before going into a shoot?
. I will have usually had to build a treatment as to how we are going to undertake the job so that helps to Map it all out on a document first, this involves referencing images which is super beneficial . We then go through casting, location scouting sometimes prelighting a job a day before. Spending time thinking about the type of images you would like to make and the type of images the client want is really important. Jobs can be complicated so you want to be prepared.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
Wolfgang tillmans was one of the first (he went to bournemouth ! ) Juergen teller always loved his style. David Sims !  There have been lots of influences over the years ! some of them photographers Ive worked for at the time, just seeing how they approach a job or situation can influence you. This is why I believe assisting is super important, you get first hand experience of seeing how a great photographer works this will no doubt influence you. Tyrone and Frank Lebon are great image and film makers. I do not make work thats anything like them but I do love following their work.
What would be your basic team that you work with?
I would work with 2 photographic Assistants and one digital operator. This would be my basic photo team.
How has the industry changed over the years?
The industry has become more integrated with in the TV commercial / moving image world. What I mean is we are quiet often shooting alongside TV commercials. Which means schedule is super tight ! you get less time to shoot more content ! along with all the other digital channels like social media etc. Moving image and photography now more often then not share a set ! The brands want more and more content from a shoot day so gone of the days when we use to shoot 8 shots and that was that.
What is your advice for someone who is just starting put in their photography career?
My advice would be try to get into assisting photographers you like ! understand that this is a job in its self and take this roll seriously for a good few years. You will learn all about the technical aspects of a shoot as well as how to work with brands and clients ect. Im afraid its all the stuff University cant teach you ! My advice would be also if you want it ! work hard be pleasant to everyone and don’t take you’re foot of the gas !
