Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”
and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.
It’s a mistake to think of the feminist movement as “Oh well in a particular moment in history a few women became enlightened about their condition and started fighting back” and it speaks to a wider ignorance of women’s history. When we speak about how women are complicit in their oppression and how women for most of history did not prepare organised attacks against patriarchy, let us not forget that the history of women is one of simmering dissatisfaction, always under the surface. It is filled with constant tiny battles, constant rebellions and negotiations to survive or to have a short term victory, some as small as a fake headache others as large as poisoning one’s husband, secret abortions, collecting and sharing knowledge with other women, anonymously written books, etc. We can see evidence of this deep lingering dissatisfaction and anger in records of women’s sadness and anger, of their “hysteria” and illnesses. We also see evidence of it in men. Nowhere in history have men taken a break from their continuous propaganda campaigns and ever evolving oppression against women. That in itself should be enough evidence to show women’s subjugation is not natural or happily accepted. Just as no woman’s patriarchal beliefs come from a vacuum, neither does her feminist consciousness. Your knowledge, your beliefs, cultivated against many odds, every word you’ve read that has resonated with you, every statistic proving your experience is not isolated, is the result of so many different women’s battles.
when mitski said “i love everybody because i love you” and when mitski said “it’s just that i fell in love with a war and nobody told me it ended” and when mitski said “im not happy or sad just up or down and always bad” and when mitski said “i was so young when i behaved 25 and now i find i’ve grown into a tall child” and when mitski said “though i close my eyes i know who you pretend i am” and when mitski said “i always want you when i’m finally fine” and when mitski said “i thought i’d be done by 20 but now i’m 29 and the road ahead appears the same” and when mitski said “if i gave up on being pretty i wouldn’t know how to be alive” and wh
hey bro its ok if you're a little possessive,, I don't mind if you mark me up a lil bit and make me feel like I belong to you,,, yano,, actually,, I think I'd kinda like it if you did that, if you wanted, that'd be cool with me
With that in mind, we’re all gonna remember that JKR is a terf who has literally been cited by legislators engaged in legislation that actively harms trans people, and we’re not gonna give her any more money.
That means not streaming the new show on Netflix, because regardless of how much influence she has on the production, she gets paid for it.
We’re gonna make the show flop. We’re gonna show Warner Brothers that we don’t forget (of course, how would we forget, it isn’t as if she’s stopped), and that their business association with terfs is no longer profitable.
It is NOT like Lovecraft, because Lovecraft is very dead and his works are in the public domain. By consuming Lovecraft media, you are not giving any money to old Howard.
