India has always been and still is a land with strong family bonds. As a result, the country has seen its ageing members been taken care of by other family members, specially their children. Unlike many developed countries, the aged often ‘age in place’, that is they live a full life in their home. However, this has never been easy and in the present state with more and more nuclear families with both working spouses, dedicated and prolonged home health care for the elderly by their family members is at question.

Two Prime Reasons pushing Organised Home Health Care forward

At present there are two vibes brimming to the top – the ageing yet monetarily stable want to age in the privacy of their homes but with more independence and self-respect. The young on the other hand want to provide better care for their parents and relatives but agree that there is lack of sufficient time to dedicate solely towards their care. They have to often run between the poles to make ends meet. It is here that the organised Home Health Care sector has started playing its role in providing quality medical service in the privacy of one’s own homes.

Nation’s role in Advancing the Cause

Better medical facilities and general awareness towards healthy lifestyle have resulted in prolonged life. This means a rapidly ageing nation. And an ageing nation calls for a huge proportion of dedicated time towards health care from the younger generations. In a fast developing country like India, time of the educated and capable youth is equivalent to money. Therefore, time lost is money lost. Therefore, it is time for the nation to pay attention towards the nascent Home Health Care sector.

While the private health care agencies are taking a lead in this direction, the total manpower involvement and investments are quite low when compared to the size of the need. The nation as a whole needs to arise to the call and the government in the centre as well as in state levels need to join in the force of progressing the cause for the overall benefit of the nation.
