Decreased sodium levels in the blood are known as hyponatremia. Sodium in hyponatremia is defined as serum or plasma levels less than 135 mmol/L, and levels below 130 mmol/L are clinically significant.
Decreased sodium levels mean increased sodium loss and increased water retention. Increased sodium loss in urine is due to decreased aldosterone production, thiazides (diuretics), and sodium lost with ketones (ketonuria).
