A little-known chapter in American history is that the first 23 Black members of the U.S. Congress were all Republicans. During the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, the Republican Party鈥攖hen the party of Abraham Lincoln and emancipation鈥攆ought for the rights of formerly enslaved people, while Southern Democrats opposed them. African Americans, newly enfranchised, aligned with Republicans and began to win elections to Congress. Leaders like Hiram Revels, the first Black U.S. Senator, and Joseph Rainey, the first Black Representative, made historic strides in a time of great hope and fierce resistance. This pivotal legacy is often left out of textbooks, yet it reveals how political affiliations and racial justice movements have shifted over time.
