GAVLAK Palm Beach is thrilled to present, 𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘻 (𝘋.𝘖.𝘗.𝘈.): 𝘈 𝘞𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳, the artist’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery, opening January 23, 2021. ⁣ ⁣ For this exhibition, Alvarez created new large-scale mixed-media works on his signature mica, each dedicated to his late partner, the Amazing Randi. Dean Sameshima’s series, 𝘐𝘯 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 (1998), portrays photographs of rumpled beds that evoke domesticity, encapsulate the ‘private’ & conjure tranquil bodies in repose. Coming in closer, we see more clearly: these beds have been used, slept in, lain on, untucked. They evoke an ambiguous sense of longing and loss. The presence of human bodies is absent from the scene, yet their absence is palpable. ⁣ Considered in isolation, Sameshima’s pictures of empty beds flooded in different colors and light endeavor to address loss not only as an individual and isolated process, but also as a collective one, through a kind of performative transference that reinvests the lost object into the social, public sphere. Sameshima’s beds visually articulate mourning & melancholia as constitutive of social materiality. 💛#LetThereBeLight (Portal)✨⁣ Los Angeles-based designer and art collector Megan Tagliaferri has announced a new 15,000-square-foot space called 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 (@compoundlbc) dedicated to art and wellness. @megantagliaferri says: “I wanted to create a space where all aspects of a person, and community, can be nurtured…Art and wellness both have the ability to strengthen our connections and understanding of ourselves, our communities, and the world around us. Compound’s mission is to create a space for dialogue, social justice, healing, and transformation—all anchored by the arts.”⁣ ⁣ Lauri Firstenberg, the founder of @laxart, has come on board as Compound’s curator and artistic director, and is organizing the inaugural exhibition, “Chaos to Cosmos,” which will include paintings, sculpture and photography along with video and film installations by artists such as @gisela_colon_ ‘s 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭 (𝘙𝘶𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮) — all works from Tagliaferri’s personal collection. Egalitarian, ecological and peaceful cultures that acknowledge and honor our interdependence with the Earth, the Cosmos and all of life. Spiritual cultures led by Womxn priestesses, where non-binary persons hold significant and magical roles. Cultures where the Womxn is worshipped as a powerful creatrix/destructress, and where time is a cycle of birth, death and rebirth. A culture at the very dawn of humanity, when “God was a woman, do you remember?”⁣ ⁣ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦 is an exhibition inspired by early Neolithic Goddess idols, where the female figure is often seen displaying Her large, magical vulva. These sacred figures embody and enact an empowered, magical female sexuality, emblematic of fertility. In ancient matrifocal cultures, we find the earliest form of abstraction where female genitalia are represented by The Sacred V- a motif found in Garcia’s work. In Garcia’s drawings the female genitals are displayed as geometric cosmologies similar to mandalas, yantras or sacred sites seen from above, and operate as meditative tools, devotional objects, and portals to inner experience. In this exhibition the artist shares a representation of the female form that challenges the historical narrative and instead enacts the numinous power of female sexuality.
