If there is someone who knows a thing about hard work and determination, it’s 2nd Lt. Valdeta Mehanja, a pilot with the 1-131st Aviation Regiment. Mehanja is an Albanian native born in Kosovo and a US citizen; she never thought she would get to see Albania.

The American Immigration Council will honor U.S. Army Commissioned Officer Valdeta Mehanja with its American Heritage Award, which recognizes the talents, contributions, and accomplishments of immigrants and their advocates.

Spc. Abhinav Johri immigrated to the United States from India on a Student Visa to earn his master's degree in Mathematics. While pursuing his studies he felt the need to serve in the Army Reserve and attempted to enlist several times. It took Johri more than 2 years, to achieve his goal, to enlist in the military and be able serve in a position where his skills will be utilized to the maximum.
