After last Thursday I was completely blown away by your messages and comments of support. 💞 I had to not pick up my phone for a few hours and go about my day as usual - sharing that story was really emotionally draining!!! Thank you so much for getting behind what I said. I was shocked at the amount of similar stories that came out from it too. I’ve got so much to say on this and have an update on a couple of things later but wanted to let you know the event ended up postponing due to covid-19. Definitely a wise move given where we’re at now. But yes…. Definitely more to talk about on this. The main thought I keep thinking about and going back to right now is that nothing lasts forever. I’ve been writing up lots of lines for new cards recently and one of them I designed is this one - it was meant to be a wedding / engagement card or for new jobs but feels very appropriate for these times. ❤️ I don’t know about you but I’ve been feeling really rallied and buoyed by the amazing stories and things people are doing at the moment. There’s lots of free things happening online too including a 3 day summit by @futureretailuk, a @foundandflourish workshop and people like @vestpod @_worknotes @mother_pukka @prdispatch and @enterprisenation are all sharing tips on how to cope if you’re freelance / self employed / a small business. Gonna be back on stories later, haven’t been home since last Friday 😬 (long story) more on that later too. 🙃

I need your help. I’ve been axed from an event for speaking out about the fact not everyone taking part is being paid. The event is about empowering women. Tickets cost £30-£140 to attend. I was contacted a couple of months back about the opportunity. I had seen a call out for paid speakers on Twitter so when an email landed in my inbox I agreed to take part. I was impressed they openly shared it was a paid. Last week I emailed to confirm the rate and how I would get paid. They told me there was no budget for panellists. I asked friends who we’re speaking. Around 50% of the people I spoke to told me they were getting paid. I responded to the organisers with this info and they agreed to pay me. I accepted but said I could only do it if everyone was paid. Then got an email informing me that due to covid-19 there have been some line up changes and I was no longer needed for the panel. They have since replaced me on the panel with another speaker. A very real problem in business is women not having enough confidence to charge what they should for their experience. By differentiating between paying and not paying people they’re potentially undermining the self worth and confidence of the speakers that they haven’t paid. This event is about celebrating women in business and empowering others. There’s nothing empowering about not getting paid for your time when the audience is paying a fee to hear you speak. I was reluctant to come on here and share this experience but I feel I have no choice. I need your support to show them that this is not ok. What can you do? Like this post. The more people that agree it’s not ok to organise a commercial event where you sell tickets but only pay some of your speakers the less this will happen. If you stand for championing women in business, reflect this in the way your company behaves and operates. If you are appearing at an event ask whether you are being paid and what the fee is before confirming it.
